Magister Negi Magi (Negima) - Ala Alba Set

This is the first set I created using this site's services, and the second set I have created so far (my first, Defenders of Middle Eartth, I did using Publisher. I lost the file). I knew that there being a fairly small number of members in Ala Alba who could contribute meaningfully to a Yu-Gi-Oh duel would be to my advantage -- and then more people joined Ala Alba. You will notice a few individuals missing (like Takane and Mei). I omitted them not because their contributions are smaller, but because they are unable to do things that others I already have can do. In some cases I made another card because I found different pictures. I have included those as well.

I took my pictures from all the sources: both manga, the anime, and especially the OADs. I was thrilled with the opportunities Yue's more recent OAD offered me.

This is a deck of leveling monsters, spells that act like traps and traps that act like spells, Landscape and lesser Field spells, and 'mounting' Artifacts. These regulation-breaking changes to the way the game would be played are why this deck is set, rather than under the realistic section. So take a look and enjoy. I will appreciate any feedback and suggestions you may have for me.

For 'Motivation: The Ultimate Duo' I included such a high LP cost because it is a Quick-Play Spell that can be used during any phase, and a powerful one at that. If you want I can create a Continuous Spell version, but I think it would lose a significant amount of its power by not being able to be played against the opponent's cards during a Battle Phase. If you have any further suggestions on how to improve this card, I will consider them.

I thought the section rules allowed for the creation of custom types. I do it all the time, especially since it helps make Spells and Traps more exclusive to the set. You will note, however, that 'Mundus Magicus: Megalomesambria' still has an affect on Spellcasters.

Ideally 'Dark Evangel' would be a Ritual Monster, however it does not make sense to apply a Ritual Spell to the Field Spell Slot. It may seem strange, but I make a lot of Fusions that are made with a material spell instead of two or more material monsters. I started doing that with the 'Defenders of Middle Earth' set by making it so 'Strider, Ranger of the North' could be fused with 'Narsil' to summon 'Aragorn, King of the West.' It is that kind of set-up, and I will understand if others, such as yourself, do not want to use it.

That change to the 'Megalomesambria' card can be made, since it is a Spell with lots of text space. I will edit the post when I have done so.

If I had to single-source, I would say the manga ([i]Negima[/i], not [i]Negima! Neo)[/i] -- but black and white pictures do not suit it, so I'm glad to be able to do screen captures from the OADs, which are much more accurate to the manga than either of the anime. The manga is the only way to bring out Ala Alba's true power, since neither anime goes that far. Negi in [i]Negima![/i] seems just to be getting started, whereas in [i]Negima!?[/i] he seems to rely much more on the power of the Pactios, which are fractured into three categories, so he's a lot weaker than he should be. The rest of the pictures are either from Deviantart or from the list if you search for images with Google. I really want to find coloured pictures for the second 'Dark Evangel' and 'Lightning God Negi.' It's even more challenging to find any coloured pictures of Shirabe/Brigitte.

I do not care as much for a rating/grade as I do for constructive feedback on how to improve the cards. To that end, I would like to ask that suggestions be as specific as possible so they are as helpful as possible.

As to the card types, I wanted them to reflect how things are in-series. As such, understanding them requires at least some knowledge of the series.
- [b]Beast:[/b] I assigned this to the residents of Mundus Magicus who have Beast-like qualities (and may well qualify as Furries).
- [b]Broken Characters:[/b] Inspired by Chisame, these are the guys who are so powerful it's nuts. It can be hard to even understand their power sometimes. Chiu's list of Broken Characters starts with Rakan, and she may as well include Negi, Evangeline, and all of Ala Rubra plus Cosmo Entelechiea.
- [b]Hanyou:[/b] As is traditional, half-youkai (supernatural beings) or half-demons. Setsuna and Mana (not an official member of AA) are of these types. I'd have included Kotarou, but I'd have run out of room in the type line. I dislike when that happens.
- [b]Magisters/Magistra[/b] (Latin for 'Master)' have a slight boost over the less specific Spellcasters. They're specialists in both elements and branches of magic.
- [b]Ministers/Ministra[/b] (Latin for 'Attendant)' gain magical boost from the Masters they attend. The ones in Ala Alba all also have magical Artifacts.
- [b]Ninja[/b] are self-explanatory, maybe. Stealth fighters. Kotarou and Kaede have explosive techniques.
- [b]Puppet:[/b] For Chachamaru's early state, since she is one of Evangeline's puppets. If 'Zero was in the set she would be one too, as would others of the Chacha line.
- [b]Shinsou Daywalker:[/b] Evangeline is in a class and type all her own. This is for her partially-released state. If you think about it, Eva is a reverse-order summon because her most powerful state is her most natural state -- yet because of Nagi's curse and the barriers she is sealed most of the time. We can only guess at her full power, since her last match with Negi and Asuna ended in a [i]Flans Exarmatio[/i] sneeze.
- [b]Students:[/b] For pre-Pactio states, and especially for the more ordinary girls like Nodoka.

The Artifact cards I used are all based on the ones found in the manga. I used them both because they are canon and because they are generally more powerful than what got used in [i]Negima![/i] (1st anime) or [i]Negima!?[/i] (2nd anime). I would be inclined to stick with what I have until someone gives me more specific suggestions. I did think of a couple possible additions, though. Please tell me what you think:

Chisame Hasegawa / Chiu-sama: Sceptrum Virtuale

Chisame and Negi only. Target a MACHINE monster and control it (max 3 turns).

Chizuru Naba: Servator Stellarum / Negi Scepter

Natsumi Murakami: Adiutor Solitarius

When this card is equipped to Natsumi, neither she nor the monsters around her can be targeted for an attack or effect until one of them attacks.
*note: I would need to make a Natsumi card for this to work, and she does not have any notable battle stats. Ayaka has battle stats (she does Aikijutsu), but her Artifact is useless in battle.

Wow but OCG gets around to what it's trying to say in a roundabout way. There're two things that you seem to have misunderstood, though.
1. It would not be all of the monsters on the player's side of the field, only the ones to Natsumi's left and right (to either side of her).
2. Natsumi has yet to convince anyone she has any attack (or defense) power of her own. I would not be able to think of an effect for her either, which means it's unlikely I'd actually make a card for her... or for her Artifact. But it was fun thinking which of the new Artifacts might be handy in battle. Well, that one might be handy for someone who uses Stall strategies. I know some people have made cards for Negi's entire class, but I'm pretty sure most of them would be useless.

Although some of them are more useful than you'd think: Akira and Chizuru have shown either freakishly high speed or strength (twice for Chizuru, although Akamatsu himself said she should not be able to tag Kotarou).

I could make the cards if someone thinks they'd be useful, but I still would need a suggestion for Natsumi's card. Something that would make someone want to put her in his or her deck. Hmm. Nope, I have not got any ideas.

Well, feel free to use paper copies for now if you're comfortable with the cards and believe you know what they all should do. The effects and achetypes are non-standard for Yu-Gi-Oh, so they may not be as straightfroward as I thought. But in any case, I posted the entire set, including the cards in my deck, so anyone could use them. I will also be posting any new cards that result from the manga as it continues. If I can figure out effects for them (I have no idea what to do with [i]Ensis Exorcizans[/i] when it has absorbed [i]Magia Erebea[/i] from Negi that would be different from what it does already).

If anyone has any ideas concering members of Ala Alba I have not included please do let me know. As I do not have any further ideas this seems to be as far as I can take this set for now.

I am now working on the Resources (Spells and Traps) for my Dungeon Crawlers set. For this one I started with monsters of the classic[i] Dungeons & Dragons[/i] character classes, filling party member slots by basing them on different series (again, [i]Negima[/i] has the highest representation in this set). The monsters do some cross-class experimentation as they Level, and settle toward what works best for them in-series. The characters I have based the monsters on do work well together, I think, but they're not classical team-ups for the most part. I purposefully chose those I thought could become competent more-or-less on their own. I also omitted characters like Asuna and Nodoka -- so monsters and fusions are done. Even the cards I have made from [i]Negima[/i] are different from the ones I made here because the manga is a basis. I go off-character as the monsters get to higher levels.

The Pactio system I have been working on for this set does not presume who will be Master or Attendant. It merely allows the character (and card controller) to upgrade Equip Spells to be as durable as Artifacts are in the manga (they revert to card form, but do not get destroyed). I have been including Artifacts from [i]Negima[/i], however if a Contract happens with a Master of lower magic capacity the Equip Spell would not be upgraded to an Artifact. This is because not all Pactio Cards are Artifact Cards. Whether or not this will happen depends on the partners the card controller chooses while using the Pactio spells. The conditions for Pactio and Artifacts are on the cards, so even someone who does not know about non-Artifact cards ought to be able to use them properly.

As always you will be able to see what I mean better when I post the complete set (on its own thread, don't worry). I plan on posting it when I have completed it. In honour of Nagi's Ala Rubra and Negi's Ala Alba I will be calling mine the Azure Wing Deck, and not anything so silly as 'Order of the Stick.' Besides, that's already taken.

My secret is I chose some of the pictures first. As I was going through the roster on Wikipedia I searched Google and various boards for more pics that would fit, including Photobucket and Imageshack.
