he doesn't actually antagonistic, per say.

10/10 sentence structure.

Or at the very least, he's not an ass like Kaiba or early Chazz were since we can see he's not disrespecting Yuya not his father in any way, and even shut up one of his own members for doing so.

Yeah, seeing as he's respectful of Yuya's father, it'd make sense for him to snap at anyone who disrespects him in any way, in this case Hokuto who would make a comment like he did in the episode.

I like Reiji from what we've seen so far. It was cool to see him show respect for Yuya's dad too, nice change of pace from other people. And I'm really liking his seemingly diverse Extra Deck.

I don't understand the point of Covenant cards, however. Is there an extra advantage to drawing 4 cards at once rather than just starting out with them that I'm not aware of?

On a related note, the Booster SP Raging/Raising masters seems to be mainly focused on DDs, as they aren't in Next Challengers, and Raging Masters is reprinting the DT cards used by the 3 other LDS students to fill a 60-card set. Is this just so people have to buy both NECH for new Pendulums/generic  staples and this pack if they want to play DDs; Konami wins this round. Also, how will this work out in the TCG? DDs becoming the OCG cards in NECH?

Even though the set contains 60 cards, we won't know how many of the cards are going to be new cards for anothr couple of weeks. Though we'll most likely get more info within the next week or so.

The Covenant cards have extremely useful effects in that one of them searches any Level 4 or lower DD monster from his deck or lets him do the Fusion Summon.

Lease Laundering just lets him bypass the -1000 Life Points effect and refuel his hand.

The draw 4 cards matters because it gives him a place to start from the next turn, while the Covenant cards let him make all the plays he did make.

It's a constancy thing.

Sorry about that. I've been doing those mistakes a lot (but the editing button helps me a ton) due to extreme schedule changes IRL creating lack of sleep and mealtimes. I sometimes wonder if my brain is dying.

*Goes edit that out*

Yeah, he wasn't just respectful to Yuya's father, but has up until now been respectful to Yuya himself as an opponent.

If I had to guess I'd say he in a way admires Yuya's way of dueling from the time he watched him against Shingo.

That's fair enough.

That sounds about right as he thanked Yuma for putting on a show as he was watching the video feed after the duel.

He's not being antagonistic or rude, but he is criticizing Yuya in an analytical way, by musing that Yuya seems to be a kind person, and that he might be a little naive. Ironically, he's saying this about how Yuya isn't ending his turn on the spot when the Covenants will apparently defeat Reiji in the next turn. Yuya opts to Set a card before ending.

Reiji and the Covenants are also somewhat interesting to analyze. They seem to represent making shady deals for power, but then nullifying them without actually paying the price. In addition, "breaking" the contracts in this fashion gives him MORE power (draws). This, and his mastery of various Summons, and using demon kings as his main monsters (DDD) suggests that this type of playstyle will one day bite him REALLY hard.

One should never toy with dark rituals or deals with the devil. They will always claim what they want, no matter how much you delay. The huge risk factor, and playing fast and loose with contracts is all-over risky. It wouldn't surprise me one day if Reiji's own style strangles him someday down the road.

Also, don't the DDD monsters have effects that retrieve Covenant cards from the Graveyard?

He did plus off of it all in the end. I think  Was hard to keep track.

About Reiji's style of duelling with covenants biting him back: I only really see this happening in either the fateful rematch with Yuya near the end of the first arc (having him lose that way in this duel wouldn't help the character or his 'cool factor', crucial for those sales) or near the start of a new arc where he, now more of a frenemy (like Kaiba, Chazz, Jack, Shark, Kite) is defeated by the new mysterious bad guy turning Reiji's deck against him to emphasise the new threat.

(the new threat even being related to the devil or covenants - the DD cards - if this series also goes down the supernatural route like the others?)

Well, let's see...he went first so he had 5 cards.

He activated 2 copies of the Covenant that searches a DD monster. So that's a +2, since the Covenants are Continuous Spells. Then he played the Covenant that's a Fusion card. That's a +0 since it stays on the Field. Then he fused his two monsters (-2) and gained a Fusion monster (+1). So far, he has a net of +1.

Then he set 2 cards.

On the following turn, he used both of his Set cards, one being Lease Laundering, the other being another Covenant. He destroyed 4 Covenants, and drew 4 cards. That's a -5, and then +4. So a net of -1. Coupled with his previous net of +1, he pulled even before the start of his turn. He started with 5 and ended with 5 before the draw for the turn.

As for the episode today...that was interesting.

[spoiler=Spoiler]

It was obvious that Reiji's added DD monsters were Pendulums because they only showed the audience the top half of the cards. On that note, activating Pendulum cards doesn't really make for an out-of-the-blue surprise because it has such an incredibly long buildup before the cards are even played on the disk. Whereas with Xyz, Fusion, and Synchro Summons, the monster itself is the plot-relevant surprise (Numbers in particular showcase this).

The gates suddenly breaking down and losing scale values, and then killing Reiji's Pendulums seemed a bit like a cop-out, but Reiji commented something about them being prototypes, which fits with what he seemed to say to his mother in a previous episode, that they had been analyzing and researching Pendulums and had an almost complete understanding of it. The cards also seemed to be getting damaged or rejected by the Disk near the end.

Reiji also had an interesting moment where he seemed to snap a little and get a slightly crazed look in his eye. I assume his unknown Trap card had some method to allow him to win. I'm wondering what he said to Yuya at that point, because Yuya seemed shocked beyond belief.

But seriously, him just stopping and leaving the Duel like that was absurdly anti-climactic, even given the circumstances that he probably received truly urgent information that required his attention.

I was half-expecting Reiji to surrender the Duel at the end, when his Pendulums pretty much killed themselves. But I suppose it being ambiguous whether Reiji was going to win is a little better than Reiji clearly about to do the winning move, and then having to be interrupted.

So was the duel and the bet called off?

No, thanks for the spoiler guy. Really, no worries. It's not like some of us are waiting to actually watch the episode and find stuff like out when its subbed or anything <_<

Bah, forgot quoting with spoilers opens spoilers (only reason I came here before anyone says my fault for coming in the thread when notifications don't tell me where I've been quoted, unlikes likes). Thankfully didn't see it all, but enough to jump to conclusions of a shit and predictable nature of where this has gone until I see the sub <_<

Now if you could all please NOT QUOTE OR LIKE ANY POSTS I MAKE IN THIS THREAD BETWEEN RAW AND SUBBED EPISODE POSTINGS!!!

Thank you

To be fair this is Astro Dude we're talking about here, he hardly learns to put spoily stuff like that in spoilers does he? It generally irritates the lot of us.

I do. But by the time the episode airs everyone practically knows it. You show is safe for now. But next week, we'll see what Yuzu's dad is made of. If anything

[spoiler=yuzu's dad]

If Yuzu uses elegant looking monsters her dad must use monsters that make the likes of Juri Han, Grenade Man and the TF2 Soldier combined look tame.

To be honest this thread has Spoiled me a lot as well. Not to mention everyone posting threads in TCG about the recent cards. Meh, of course its hard to avoid Spoilers on the Internet but it truly pisses me off at times.

Why do you have your settings so you get a notification for when your posts are quoted? That seems like it'd be incredibly annoying.

In my defense, I did put my spoily stuff in spoilers.

You did, quoting you back was what nearly revealed stuff (averted gaze though)

...

... *sighs as he immediately does same thing twice* <_<

Couldn't find the Simpson/McKellen version I wanted which displays it in more ignorant idiocy than deliberate antagonism, but this will do.

Yuya asked for his name, and the recovery duel is happening next episode, so Yuya is probably gonna improve his deck or skills somehow. I personally see him using Rituals or Synchros since no one has Rituals and the tributed Pendulums also go to the grave.

How long did it take between Yuma vs Kaito Astral vs Kaito?

To be fair, that depends. I have my notifications like that as well because I know:

-99% of my posts don't get quoted so when they do, it's something I need to listen to and maybe reply accordingly.

-I don't always check back at threads hunting for someone potentially telling me something. Non-quoted stuff about me I've only ever found by mere chance.

Though personally I disabled being notified of friends' statuses because I'd always get 100+ a day of useless stuff that'd freeze the page for me, and I think that gives me an idea of what quote notifications would be for you, being a mod and all, so I can see why you wouldn't have it like that.

No, not everyone. Example of who doesn't? The ones that try to avoid it until subs, duh~
You can argue that the Pendulum Summon was no real spoiler due to the build up it has had, or how they show the scene right after the opening song, but what you just said about Yuzu's dad IS something you should have said in spoilers. You just spoiled something else even in the post you made a spoiler.

To be fair, reading about the cards that are gonna appear is not necessarily a bad thing depending on if you see the raw. I personally like knowing what the cards they'll play do before jumping into the episode whenever I can get that knowledge. I'm a little bit more annoyed when it's plot points that are revealed. Buuuuuut I know what you are saying.
