What the actual fuck a commander planeswalker

Teferi, Temporal Archmage [4UU]
Planeswalker - Teferi
+1: Look at top 2 cards of deck, one to hand one on bottom
-1: Untap up to 4 permanents
-10: You get an emblem with "You can use planeswalker abilities at instant speed"
Teferi can be your commander

Man, this is a ruling nightmare for commander damage. I'm not ok with planeswalkers being able to be commanders.

Not really. Only commanders with the rules text can be commanders, and commander damage is only ever relevant if the commander in question turns into a creature like Gideon, or with some convoluted combo like March of the Machines and Liquimetal Coating.

To be fair, commander damage isn't the cleanest thing in the world since it forces you to track like 3 different numbers that may or may not be relevant.

The card itself is cool. Interesting to see Teferi as a planeswalker since he lost his spark a while back.

Edit: Doug just confirmed on tumbler that this is before he lost his spark.

Is it really worth the 6 Mana to pay for him?  I suppose you can Cast him and then untap four immediately, but eh...

If you have him out with The Chain Veil and a land that taps for 2 you can get tons of uses out of Veil. Personally, I'm more interested in using him in Animar to go off even more with Animar and my cheap creatures. Over all though, I do agree that he isn't that good.

I do wonder if you can only use PWs that specify it as your Commander, or if you can use ANY PW as your commander.

Cus if its the latter, I have a JtMS deck I need to make....

Why even ask? That is like asking if I could have any number of cards in my deck or just any number of the demon apostle guy. You can only have Teferi planeswalker as a commander since it specifies on the card. You guys are making it more complicated then it is. Just read the card.

A reprint of Teferi, Archetype of Flash will mean that he's cheaper to acquire. Yay!

But that could mean that he's seen more often. Uh oh.

Alternatively, the presence of Teferi could have a hand in driving up the deck's price a little. Not as bad as TrueName, but the demand...

Other PWs are still illegal to use as commanders. This is still my biggest issue with this guy. He breaks rule #1 of commander.

does his emblem mean that if I'm in a 5 player game I get 5 times the number of Planeswalker abilities?

I would assume not since you can only activate Loyalty abilities once every turn of yours. It just allows for more manipulation of the stack. Don't quote me on this, but this is most likely how it is.

Yeahhhh. That doesn't make much sense.

I'd like it if they were ruling that all PWs could be Commanders, since some people houserule that anyway, but thats just stupid :I

Cards can disregard rules if stated on the card. Planeswalkers aren't legendary creatures, so they don't break the rules. This does because it says on the card, which has cards have broken rules and it is allowed if said on the card. Things might change, but there is no breaking or changing of any rules for planeswalkers as commanders any time soon.

By the same principle, Relentless Rats is nonsensical as the only card that lets you break the 4-of rule.

As stated above, Relentless Rats and Shadowborn Apostle break rule #1 of building a deck.

This is the kind of thing games do to keep them exciting, introducing new mechanics, breaking old rules, etc.

I mean, it's not like they're about to make a huge cycle of 27 Planeswalkers that can also be commanders.

You can activate a loyalty ability of a planeswalker you control only at the time you could cast a sorcery and only if you haven’t activated one of that planeswalker’s loyalty abilities yet that turn.

This is from the rulings on Planeswalkers. Tell me why I can't use a loyalty ability on my turn then again on my opponent's turn when Teferi's Emblem is out.

Because there's no ruling for Instant Speed Planeswalkers so we're pretty much guessing.

I assume people just aren't reading the card. It really clearly says "on any player's turn". The once per turn restriction stays the same, so, yes, you can activate it on your turn, then again on the opponent's turn. Yes, you can do it five times per turn cycle in a 5-player game.
