Barrier Statues

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I haven't seen a topic on here about these guys though I feel their time in the spotlight is long overdue.

If you don't know, the Barrier Statue monsters are a series of 6 level 4 monsters with 1000/1000 stats that each have a different attribute. They all have basically the same effect as well: "No monsters can be Special Summoned except [Attribute of the card] monsters."

(will throw in pics later when I'm feelin' less meh)

To be honest, I feel as though there is a huge amount of potential in these monsters, especially since SS lockdowns have been shown to be really powerful lately.

Recently, I've been using a lock based strategy built around keeping Barrier Statue of the Torrent (WATER) or Testudo erat Numen alive to lock down opponent SS's (depending on what deck I'm facing).

So what do you think about these Statues?

Pretty much they are a ghetto/poorman's version of Vanity.

....

But it's funny, because they can actually do things, if given the right scenario.

Except that they allow you to SS if you mono-Attribute your deck. Also, Vanity's is Limited and therefore difficult to build a deck around, and a monster is much easier than a trap to get reuse if it gets destroyed, and to search.

I really don't think Konami really should be supporting one sided Vanity's Emptinesses. Honestly any card that completely locks Special Summoning of everything but X, or of Z, unless it's so specific that what it locks is basically irrelevant deserves to be trash for ever because funk sheet like Royal Oppression, Vanity's and Kristya. It's just terrible to have cards running around that shut out literally a good percent of cards now. Then again I'm of the general opinion that floodgates are cancer and sacrifice one copy of Macro Cosmos to the demonic gods at Konami to gut half of these things every night. Some day we will run out of Macro Cosmos.

"SS lockdowns have shown to be powerful" isn't sufficient justification for playing these. The only SS lockdowns that have been used are ones that are either backrow or have over 1400 (ideally 1500) ATK. A 1000 ATK monster isn't going to be much use as a SS lock unless you can back it up with backrow and if you really have enough backrow it's likely you won't be getting that much value out of the lock being one-sided. The other issue with them is that there are very few strategies that special summon only monsters of a certain attribute, so even though you can normally make most of your plays it's not as if you're unaffected.

Well, yes. On their own they are pretty bad. In my case, I usually combo mine with Safe Zone/moon mirror shield/aquarium stage, etc. You know, stuff that stops it from being run over.

But they also have Vanity's advantage that they could be chained from the Grave, so that's pretty cool.

Someone teched Barrier Statue of the Torrent in Aqua Actress.  Aquarium Stage + Torrent is brutal.  And you know what's even better?  He milled another Torrent with something, ans since it's an aqua you can revive it when any of the aquarium cards are finally destroyed.  So even if you raigeki the field or something if he nukes his own aquarium card you are right back to not special summoning.

Try wining a duel against an archetype that just searches forever once per turn with just a Normal Summon and not killing anything by battle.  It's very difficult.

Huh, you sure that wasn't me? That sounds very similar to the Deck that I mentioned running in the OP. I tend to run "shore knight" for milling since whenever I have aquarium stage up it won't die and I can mill things once per turn.
