What, exactly, is a soul? It is no conventional organ, nor can it really even be placed. Despite its lack of physical presence, many would surely confirm that it exists. Perhaps this is just an automatic reassurance, to prove to ourselves that we are more than just sacks of flesh driven by electrical currents. Or, perhaps, there is a bit more to it…

[spoiler=The mechanics of a Soul]

Souls, under the definition used in this RP, are exclusively a human thing. This is not saying animals are completely soulless, but they are far simpler, and lack the intricacies that give human souls the potential to be truly interesting.

Now, even though every human being has a soul, not all of these souls are worth note. The special ones, however, are known as Aethertouched. Aether is a natural, intangible substance, that inhabits the entire universe. It is the element that makes up souls, as well as all other astral bodies. Now, when a soul goes through a large trauma, there is an infinitesimally small chance of it undergoing a change, the Aether that makes it up becoming highly compressed, shielding and protecting the soul from harm.

Of course, that is only where the abilities of an Aethertouched soul begin. Those with such a soul can control the Aether that inhabits their bodies and immediate surroundings, channeling it and focusing it into their own soul, increasing the Aether density to point where their soul physically manifests itself, almost invariably in the form of some manner of weapon or tool, ranging from hammers to sniper rifles, dependant upon the user. The weapons are powered by the user’s own soul, meaning that a stronger resolve creates a more powerful weapon. Aside from extremely rare cases, any given Aethertouched soul always will manifest in the same physical form each use.

And that isn’t even the best part! See, the ability to physically manifest one’s soul brings with it a unique ability, dependent mostly upon the weapon or tool in question, but other things may be taken into account in some cases. These abilities can range greatly in form and function. Some are minor, while others are capable of pulling the very threads of reality. Having an Aethertouched soul also grants superhuman physicality and endurance, though the degree to which these are present varies. Finally, the last boon granted by having an Aethertouched soul is the ability to see the souls of others, or rather, the ability to see souls that are not currently in physical form.

Unfortunately, the physical manifestation of one’s soul brings with it a great cost. When physically present, a soul is at much greater risk of damage from incoming attacks. Souls can be destroyed, or even extracted from their owner, resulting in the following progression, usually within 10 minutes:

  1.     Disorientation
  2.     Hemorrhaging through eyes, ears, nose, and mouth
  3.     Acute cardiac arrest

[spoiler=Plot]

December, 201x

Exactly two months ago, the world was shaken as the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world, was destroyed in what was thought to be a terrorist attack. However, the circumstances on how exactly it was destroyed was completely mysterious. Eyewitnesses said that the tower was standing firmly on one second, only to be bathed in an odd-looking inferno that engulfed it for several hours. When the fire subsided, it left barely anything behind, hampering the investigation regarding the incident greatly.

One week after the incident, as the news about the authorities’ futile attempt to uncover the truth behind the incident continued, the broadcast of several channels are suddenly hijacked - a figure wearing a mask then promptly announced that he was responsible for the tragedy. In the 35 minutes broadcast, he then promptly announced the existence of a group of people he called Aethertouched - people that had awakened the true potential of their souls. Heralding them as the true successor of humanity, he then announced his plan to lead these people to the surface of society, and took over the world that was rightfully theirs.

Time passed since the incident and the mysterious broadcast. The authorities kept on trying to track down the figure in the broadcast, while the public as a whole treated most of what he said as complete hogwash. Conspiracy theorists started to go wild from all the speculative and mysteries of the event, but not a lot of people paid them much heed.

Still, the people of Tokyo and the world attempted to move on from the mysterious tragedy, and continued their lives as normal.

If only fate would let them do that.

You are playing as an Aethertouched, characters will either have recently received this power, or, in the case of some, have had it for an extended period, and are capable of fully utilizing it. In any case, characters have converged in the massive city of Tokyo, using various independent reasonings, though the true motivations is the result of Aethertouched souls naturally being attracted to each other, influencing those who possess them. Some may be looking for answers regarding this change in them, while others may have more malicious intent...

[spoiler=Rules]

  1. All site rules and RP Section rules apply, obviously.
  2. I wanna say “no cliches” but honestly, some cliches are cool as hell, so as long as every character doesn’t have dead parents who were secretly heroes of the bygone era we will probably be cool.
  3. I don’t mind a player controlling multiple characters, but please don’t take on more than you can handle
  4. I am in charge here. If I say no to a character idea, plot possibility, etc, please don’t argue it. You won’t win the argument.
  5. We RP for fun, so please try not to take it all too seriously
  6. I am sure to change these at a moment’s notice and pretend it was the edited version from the start, so be ready for me to lie through my teeth about what is stated above.
  7. You can make reserves on weapons/tools, but each person can only hold 1 reserve at a time.

[spoiler=Character Application]

Feel free to tweak what is here, I honestly don’t care as long as you include everything needed to create a proper portrayal of the character.

Name: Despite the RP taking place in Japan, there is no requirement for characters to be japanese, though logically a decent number of them would be.

Age: Let’s avoid characters under 15, no real upper limit on age.

Appearance: Put this in a spoiler, may it be an image or around 2-3 paragraphs of description

Personality: Among the most important parts, at least the way I see it, so preferably around 3 paragraphs, if not more. Also in spoiler

Biography: I don’t usually require this, but considering that history is an important part of acquiring an Aethertouched soul, 2 paragraphs minimum. In spoiler. Also please include about the reasoning your character is in Tokyo right now, if your character's a foreigner.

Soul Manifestation: What does it turn into? An AK or a crowbar?

Aethertouched Ability: What ability does the manifested soul have? What power does it grant to the user? Spoiler’d.

Interest as large as Madoka's Soul Gem. If at all possible, I'd like to reserve an atlatl (pronounced at-LAH-tuhl) for my weapon. However, If I don't end up posting an app within a week, no need to hold my reserve.

[spoiler=AAA (Aez's Awesome App) WIP]

Name: Fumeii Sekaijū
Age: 31
Gender: Demigirl (They/them, she/her if familiar/ intimate)
Ethnicity: Ainu (Japanese indigenous person).
Occupation: Lawyer
[spoiler=Appearance:]
Fumeii is fairly tall, standing at 175 cm, and weighing 62 kg. Their breast-length black hair is slightly wavy and parted straight down the middle. Like most Ainu who are considered female, they have the traditional facial and arm tattoos, spanning from mouth to cheek on the face, and from elbow to hand on arms. Their light green-gray eyes are only slightly "squinted", and face much rounder and softer than those around them.

While in the courtroom, Fumeii's hair is worn up in a tight bun, and their usual garb includes small tribal earrings, a white blouse, tan blazer, and tan dress pants, with a pair of matte tan flats finishing the ensemble. They do have a black brief case, but it is unusual for them to carry it around, even while inside the courthouse. While off-duty, however, Fumeii dons a brown knee-length skirt with tribal patterning, a sleeveless, semi-transparent forest green top, and dark blue hightop sneakers. Their hair is also worn down, either completely or in a tight braid.

[spoiler=Personality:]
"I've worked harder than anyone to be where I am today, don't think I won't knock some heads to stay there."

Serious, bull-headed

[spoiler=Biography:]
Fumeii grew up in the mostly Ainu populated part of Biratori, and it was there they had both the best and worst days of their life. When they were only 7 years old, a dam that would disrupt their people's sacred land was beginning to be constructed. Fumeii knew this wasn't right and wanted to do something, but their strict parents quelled them as best they could. As the construction went on, Fumeii followed the court case surrounding the legality of it all very closely, much to their parents' dismay. It was this case that ignited Fumeii's love for law and debate.

When Fumeii was 11, they decided that, even though they couldn't do anything to directly oppose the case of the dam, they decided to receive one of their people's most honored traditions as a form of passive support; Fumeii asked to be tattooed in the traditional style of their ancestors. Their parents were overjoyed when asked, and they accepted without hesitation. Unfortunately for Fumeii, this process would prove... Dangerous.

During the tattooing, everything was fine. However, the aftermath proved to be painful, both physically and socially. Fumeii was struck with an infection, and because they knew well enough that these traditional tattoos were found upon, they hid the pain and reddening from their family by hiding in their room the minute they got home, and always wore a flu mask. This infection did not pass easily, though. One day, Fumeii collapsed while they were outside, and they were taken to a hospital in the next town over. It was in this hospital that Fumeii became Aethertouched.

When Fumeii woke up in the hospital bed, all they could hear was their parents yelling at the doctor. They were yelling at him to fix their precious child, to help their baby. The doctor, however, should little sympathy for them. He told them that they should have known what the health risks of doing the tattooing were, and that he could not accept their insurance because infections like the one Fuleii had were not covered. It was then that Gumeii began to cry silently, their face burning form a combination of embarrassment and pain. It was then that they noticed they were holding something. They were holding a stick, a dark green stick with notches and carvings in it. Too exhausted with pain to care, Fumeii passed out once again.

After the hospital incident, Fumeii had to stay home while their infection healed. While they stayed home, Fumeii remembered the green stick, and wondered about it, so much so that it appeared again. They figured out that they could do incredible things

Soul Manifestation: Atlatl, but not the darts to throw with it.
[spoiler=Aethertouched Ability:]
Case and Point
Directly relating to their aethertool (cause that's a cool name for it), Case and Point is an ability that causes any non-organic (I'm going to be counting Aether as organic for reasons) solid within the atlatl's reach (about arm-length) to form into a strong, hollow spear (called a dart), easily thrown by the atlatl. Can also be used to make some spikes for defensive maneuvers.

Under Oath
As long as eye contact is maintained, the opposition cannot lie, nor can they dodge the darts thrown by Fumeii. (Darts still can be interrupted /redirected)

Objection!
This ability allows Fumeii to stop things in their tracks by pointing at them with their atlatl. Though unable to affect sentient beings, anything else will immediately lose all forward momentum. However, the object must be endangering someone in order for it to work, otherwise it is "Overruled".

[spoiler=The Light of the Court]

Personal Information

Name: Gareth Apollo

Age: 21

[spoiler=Appearance]

z6RCIul.png

[spoiler=Personality]

Gareth believes that life is a fleeting thing, but at the same time very precious. Because of this, he tries to live every day as if it were his last, and he tries to encourage those around him to do the same. He also believes that overworking will lead to ones downfall and that one should also rest and take things easy before whatever they have going for them becomes their downfall.

He has grasped the concept of chivalry, due to him constantly in reenactments of the Medieval period. Because of this, Gareth is always looking for ways to help those in need whenever that moment comes. He tries his best to be a light of hope to others, making sure not to leave anyone in the dark all alone, as he felt this way himself. Gareth doesn't want anyone to end up in the same predicament he was in, so he fights to try and show others the light.

Due to his chivalrous nature, Gareth is loyal, willing to stick his neck out both for those he knows and doesn't know. He tries to treat everyone he comes across in his life with the same respect, living by the way of treating those how he would want to be treated, and so far that style of thinking has done good for him. In the heat of a conflict, Gareth is level-headed and tries his best to solve any conflict before resolving straight to violence. However, when it comes down to violence, he enters the fray and will support his allies anyway he can.

[spoiler=Biography]

Gareth had a decent childhood, at least he thought it was anyway. He was born in London, England to Lance and Morgan Apollo. He lived in London with his family for a long while, getting to wake up every day to the sounds of Big Ben and even take a walk down Baker Street. Still, he felt like something in his life was missing. Thankfully, his father landed him a job to be part of a Medieval Age reenactments as a knight, which he enjoyed and the missing part of his life was filled.

However, things would start taking a turn for the worse. Lance and Morgan went off to travel to America for a business trip, only being gone for a week. Unfortunately, it would be much longer than a week. Gareth kept going, as that week progressed, only to be approached by someone, bringing some rather grave news. From this man, Gareth's world came crashing down on top of him. Both of his parents died in a plane crash. He was alone and grief-stricken. He continued to live his life, feeling miserable and not being able to see the light at the end of this darkened tunnel.

This is where Gareth's soul manifested itself. It manifested into the weapon, Excalibur. Now he could finally see the light and its warmth felt like that of his parents. Gareth took his manifested soul and decided to find a way to protect and save those who needed, along with lighting up the darkness. He would make sure no one would be like him: alone and in the dark.

His journey would bring him to Tokyo. Actually, his journey to protect and save those who need it, didn't bring him to Japan. Quite the contrary, he was selected to study abroad and he chose Japan for a change of scenery.

Combat Information

Soul Manifestation: Excalibur (Appearance)

[spoiler=Aethertouched Ability]

Light of Avalon

Excalibur has given Gareth photokinesis, or the ability to control and manipulate light at will. From this ability, comes the following:

  • Flare: As it's name suggests, this allows Gareth to flash off a quick flare of light, in order to blind his opponents temporarily.
  • Light Bombs: This allows Gareth to generate small light flare-esque bombs. These will both blind the opponent and knock them back quite a bit.
  • Wings of Light: By the help of Excalibur, Gareth is able to generate two beautifully constructed wings made of pure light. With the aid of these wings, Gareth is able to discover new heights (literally). As the others, these wings of light will surely obscure the opponent's vision to a good degree.

Arthur's Scabbard

The scabbard that Excalibur comes in allows Gareth to stop the bleeding of his wounds.

Other Information

Gareth's Theme (Alternative Theme) | Gareth's Battle Theme (Alternative Battle Theme)

Potential V.A.: Kyle Hebert

  • Gareth's name means the following: Gareth - It's origin is Welsh and it means "Gentle and Modest". This is also a point to Sir Gareth who was a knight in the courts of King Arthur. Apollo - It's origin is Greek and it means "Signal light". It is also a point towards the Greek god of the same name, who was the god of light, music, and poetry.
  • Gareth's parents are nods to two separate Arthurian characters: Lance - His father's name is based on Sir Lancelot, knight of the Round Table in the courts of King Arthur. Morgan - His mother's name is based off of Morgan Le Fay (Morgan the Fairy).
  • The Aethertouched Abilities that Gareth's Soul Manifestation has is a reference to that Excalibur has been known to shine and blind. Not only this, but the scabbard of the blade was also said to not let one bleed.
  • Originally, I was planning to use Blake Swift (Shadyvox) as Gareth's potential VA, but I decided on Kyle Hebert due to that Gohan voice (not only this, but this is freakin' Kamina we're talking about! xD).
  • The idea of using Excalibur as this character's manifested soul, stemmed from the original character idea from Giga's RWBY RP, From Dust, where my character was known as Caliburn Artorigus.

Well this is a thing. Kinda gives me Bleach vibes, but I'm fine with that.
Reserving umbrellas. I might change it later, though, idk.

[spoiler=Rain Woman]

e1DkGwq.png

"I believe love is the greatest thing you'll ever learn."

Name: Manami Saito (佐藤愛海 Saito Manami)

Gender: Female
Age: 19
Birthday: March 19th

Blood Type: B

[spoiler=Appearance]

E704vW1.png

HT: 158 cm   WT: 54 kg

Manami has a rather dainty figure. Her habit of using an umbrella means her skin is rather pale for a Japanese person. Her black hair is usually in an updo, and her eyes are a rather striking violet, which has caused no small amount of gossip concerning her heritage.

[spoiler=Personality]

Manami Saito was raised on the tales of men protecting women, women serving men, and finding love amidst marriage. So she made it her goal in life to become a housewife, serving her lord and husband, and becoming his support during life's hardships. She wanted to be the one who could make him smile when he came home, and believed with all her heart that this was what her life's purpose was. After the scandal with Takehiko, however, Manami gave up on that dream, and that has affected her personality to a great degree.

Manami believes that she is tarnished goods, unsuitable for marriage or relationships, but has an almost obsessive drive to bring others together. She changed from a meek and frail flower to an outgoing, pushy, and eccentric woman. While before she did her best to talk only when addressed, like a proper woman, now she feels she has the freedom to speak her mind, as it won't affect anything anyway. She is already unsuitable for that life, but finds happiness in helping others achieve that.

Manami is quite idealistic, and believes that love conquers all. She often pushes her beliefs onto others, which they find annoying. She is an interesting mixture of a pure-hearted dreamer and a forceful, fiery crusader. She has a hard time admitting that she may be wrong about things, especially her beliefs, and doesn't question herself or her motives. However, most people that know her admit that she is rather charming in her ability to bounce back from disappointment and push on regardless.

[spoiler=Biography]

Most Saito in Japan are fine with their diminishing status from the bygone days of the Fujiwara clan, but Manami's family always longed for a return of those days. They trained their daughter in traditional arts such as dancing, tea ceremony, and ikebana, and arranged an omiai for her with a member of the Ito family, Takehiko, a man who despised her at first glance.

Manami, determined to make this work, went through with the marriage at age sixteen, but on their wedding day, Takehiko left her hanging on the altar to elope with a pretty blonde journalist from America. This disgraced Manami, making her unsuitable for marriage. Despairing of ever finding love, Manami's soul manifested itself as an umbrella, which symbolizes relationships.

Feeling lost, Manami decided on a new dream: bringing others together into relationships. Acting as the umbrella for their love, or "Cupid" to use Western terminology. With this newfound drive, Manami finished her high school education and chose to enter university to study psychology and become a marriage counselor.

[spoiler=Soul Manifestation]

Manami's soul manifests as an oil-paper umbrella. Unlike ordinary umbrellas, these are tough and can be used as blunt weapons, but they can also be used to block out the sun or rain, or even as parachutes. Manami's power depends upon the color, as she can summon either a red, purple, or white umbrella, but each has to do with the weather. She can only summon one at a time.

  • Red: Red symbolizes matrimony and love, and in Japan, one of the few ways unmarried men and women could interact in public was sharing an umbrella in the rain. Thus, it would make sense that this form can summon rain, the strength of which depends upon the will of the caster.
  • Purple: Purple symbolizes longevity, and this form brings calm and peace, hope that no matter what, there is still a tomorrow. Thus, it would make sense that it can settle storms, clear clouds, and stop the rain, though the stronger the weather, the more strength it takes to stop.
  • White: White symbolizes sorrow and death. Thus, it would make sense that it can summon severe thunderstorms. When held aloft, it can summon lightning to its tip, which gathers the energy, preventing it from shocking the bearer. They can then either let the lightning spread to the rest of the umbrella (except for the handle, which is protected), making it an improved shield, or point it at a direction and shoot the lightning like a laser beam. The umbrella protects the bearer from the clap of thunder, but others aren't nearly so lucky.

[spoiler=Miscellaneous]

  • Theme: Rain by SID
  • Manami is rather nonviolent, and hasn't killed anybody yet.
  • Her favorite umbrella form is red, because she likes to see couples gather together under the rain.
  • Manami is rather frail and has low endurance for an Aethertouched.

[spoiler=Personality]- tweaking -

[spoiler=Backstory]Born on one of Japan’s many coastal islands, Jun’s early life wasn’t really anything too special. However, the most important part of those years was discovering the existence of manga in the old run-down store where city imports came in from every now and then. That was where she first got enraptured in the world of fantasy, mecha, and wondrous tales, and this is also where her inspiration and imagination first grew to more than just a childish dream. With scrap metal, pieces of washed up junk, twine, and the island’s resources - intended or not - to her disposal, that was where her first creation was breathed to life. It was nothing more than a simple replica of a robot she had seen in one of the issues she loved, with no actual function, and barely moving joints, but it was a result. A result that led Jun to want to pursue more, and with her parents’ consent, saved up money to go and head to the mainland, where she would be able to pursue an actual, proper education.

Going to a local school regularly now while staying with something similar to a host family, Jun picked up knowledge about a variety of things and the world about her in which she lived. With her seemingly unending burning passion and a small dose of natural talent, she quickly appeared in the eyes of the teachers there, who recognized it as well. Impressed by her intelligence and determination, they decided it would be better if Jun would transfer to a higher level school. With a recommendation from her teachers, she headed to a more well-known school shortly afterwards, her host family of course being happy for her achievements. Despite a really late start to her school years, she had managed to catch up to those of her age quickly through a mix of talent, smarts, and an unbreakable spirit. However, because of her overall short time in school and urban life, Jun wasn’t able to fully pick up the social behaviors and trends of the urban Japan where she now lived. As a result, her awkwardness around others tend to manifest as being overly rambunctious and cheery, although arguments can break out when she gets too touchy-feely at times or ends up hurting people with her blunt words.

Of course, given her darker skin color, her heavy accent, and her blunt attitude that can come off as rude, there’s bound to be at least a few people that Jun would’ve been on not-so-good terms with. One such person was an arrogant, thick-headed, mean-spirited girl who went by the name Michiko Ito. From the day Jun had entered through the doors of the classroom, Ito found a new target to start bullying. It wasn’t the first time this kind of thing happened either. Ito had a reputation for such, but given her parents’ wealthy connections, the school administrators dared not lay a finger on her. Jun, being new there, obviously had no idea of what was to come. Within just the first few weeks, Jun realized that Ito was targeting her for some reason, given how her possessions kept disappearing from her lockers - until she decided to use an actual lock that is. In addition, Ito’s rude attitude towards her and the constant stream of snarky comments poking fun at her origins didn’t quite help the case either.

Not really understanding the point or reason behind the bullying, as Jun hadn’t done anything to Ito, Jun just brushed it off, finding ways to stop the different attempts at bullying through her intellect. Securing her lockers, tuning out the insensitive blabbing, and opening up and becoming friendly and getting on good terms with the rest of the class. The rest of the class, who weren’t so close-minded, were surprised to see a nice and intelligent mind behind the new foreign-looking girl, and Jun became friends with several classmates and at least respected by the others.

Obviously, Ito didn’t appreciate the fact her bullying attempts went completely south, and even led to Jun just becoming more popular within the class. In Ito’s mind, it was somehow taking away from her own supposedly massive fanbase. Ringing up a few of the dumb muscular sport jocks she always hung out with one evening after class, Ito decided to take the bullying a step further. Telling the guys to go follow Jun and rough her up and give her a good scare to stop getting in Ito’s way and just go back to being a silent little blob in the corner of the classroom, the jocks had another idea in their mind. Ito wouldn’t be coming with them, and the whole thing would happen in some alleyway, so they might as well take out some of their… pent-up stress on Jun, one could say.

As for Jun, after having recognized a while back that she was being bullied for unknown reasons, she had begun taking several different detours each day to go back to her house to mislead any potential stalkers. As she walked through an alleyway between two tall buildings, Jun’s senses alerted her of several people behind her. As she whirled around to face them, she instantly ducked over backwards, catching a spark of light glinting off something flying at her. Not a moment too soon, a nasty-looking knife that would’ve made a pretty little mark in her face swung through the air. Moving off instinct, she brutally punched the one who had been holding the knife across the face, sending him flying along with his weapon. Completely taken aback by the situation as her mind began to process the current situation, she turned to run but was kicked powerfully in the back, sending her sprawling into the asphalt. Before she could recover, one of the jocks grabbed her by her hair, making her eyes water involuntarily with pain as her head was yanked up. Shooting him a death glare, Jun was about to kick him in the face when she felt a very, very sharp sensation just a breath away from cutting into her throat. Soon enough, the rest of the bullies regrouped around her, and the one with the knife seemed almost ballistic, although it was hard to tell with such a huge blue-black bruise on his left cheek. At this point, Jun still didn’t know what to expect, except perhaps just a beating, and recognized her defeat but prepared to look for an opening.

Within the next few hours, everything that Jun had known and dreamed about the city life since she had left her island hometown was completely and utterly shattered.Jun had cried at first, not knowing anything about what was going on, her mind in a dull haze. Now, she couldn’t even cry, and her eyes were as dead as a fish’s. In her haze, she saw a glowing ball of light form into what seemed to be a blade attached to a long rope, but thought of it as nothing more than finally having just gone crazy. As her vision blacked out, it slithered into a coil on top of her chest.

Everything was a blur, being rushed to the hospital and interrogated by the police, until the police were eventually shooed away by the hospital staff and had to leave after recognizing Jun was in no state to do anything. Surprisingly though, it seemed as if none of the other people could see the glowing rope weapon, which seemed to be almost floating in mid-air. Jun really was beginning to start questioning her own sanity, but didn't dare speak of it. She had no wish of going to a mental hospital too.

Several months later, a new person walked out of the hospital gingerly. At her request, everything that happened was completely hidden with no news articles or anything of the sort ever having made it out. With a cover story about having been just sick with some severe illness, Jun once more returned to her former school. Seeming just as happy as she had once been the moment she stepped through the school gates, Jun’s ditzy antics and bluntness continued, although anyone who was actually close to Jun would’ve noticed something was off. Any attempt at even slightly questioning what had happened would just merit the same, almost scripted-like story about having been sick with some severe disease. Jun seemed to believe in the story so much that no one doubted her after a while, not even Jun herself. Nothing had happened after all anyways, of course. It was nothing more than just a bad sickness, wasn’t it?

Her grades and social activities began to drop soon though, and with it, Jun's reputation in school began to fell, until it got to the point she might as well just have been any other random person no one knew. Shying away from people with some sort of excuse, the other students could always see her essentially bolting out of the classroom to leave as fast as she could the moment the final bell rang. Even the facade really couldn't stand up anymore. A few people tried to help out at first, but after Jun kept leaving by herself, even that too, ended.

iU8EggM.png

Some time later, one can see Jun still attends the same school, the same classes, and the same extracurriculars she used to take. Jun herself though, felt almost completely hollow. Everything she was doing felt meaningless, and just for the purpose of keeping up the pretense of being fine rather than anything else. Jun didn't even know why she bothered to still keep up the facade, her presence barely even mattered in the classroom by this point. Whenever she had free time, she would simply just go up to the roof and lie on her back, staring into the sky aimlessly. In a way, it was her safehaven, from everything, from the world, from life itself. In those short periods of spare time she found herself, it was a break from everything that had changed her to who she was now, a way to forget. It was easier to just not think about it. Whether it was sunny, cloudy, raining, snowing, cold, warm, Jun couldn't care. It was somewhere away from everyone, and that was enough. It was less painful.

However, on one evening after school, Jun noticed a flyer for the Kinoshita Circus troupe coming through the town. Deciding that it might as well be worth a visit, given she was wasting away all her time anyways, Jun headed over. Upon seeing the grandiose displays and tents set up around in all the colours of the rainbow, for the first time in a long while, Jun felt a small spark of happiness. It awoke an almost kiddy glee inside of her heart, and upon releasing a breath she didn't realize she was holding, she snuck in.

Waves of sounds and light blasted her straight in the face, making her fall over backwards onto her rear. Seeing feats that seemed almost superhuman, with people walking on top of perilously high, thin ropes with nothing more than what seemed to be a long twig, people dancing and juggling with fire, and much more, it was a sight to see. Her heart quickened involuntarily from the thrill of watching a view so suddenly different from what her life to this point had seemed like. Compared to the almost colorless, drab, emptiness that had followed her around ever since the 'incident', a world so vibrant and full of melodies and warmth felt painful at first. With no time to think about anything else, the show swept Jun up full force. Here, she could forget about everything that happened in real life. All the pain, all the hatred against her, everything. If this was a dream, Jun didn't want to wake up. Let her sleep forever. After all, no one would miss her anyways, and this way, maybe she could be the slightest bit happy.

Something felt unusual though. It almost felt like there was someone she knew in the circus tent. Walking around, trying to figure out where the feeling was coming from, Jun soon realized it came from where the actors themselves were. Her gaze shifting from the audience to the performers once more, Jun's eyes settled upon a blond-haired girl who must've been a foreigner.

The first thought that came into Jun's mind was that the girl was remarkably pretty. The second was that Jun realized the girl was the origin of this unusual sensation. Jun was sure she had never seen this girl before, but it felt as if they were somehow the same kind of… person? Her mind flashing to the numerous shoujo manga she read, Jun immediately bashed her forehead against a steel support pole. Obviously, the pole was stronger, and she recoiled in pain, clutching her bruised forehead. There was no way it could be that... could it? No way, no way. After all, Jun was sure that she had never thought about girls in that kind of way in the past either. Taking a few deep breaths, Jun decided her mind was just overthinking it and that maybe she had met the girl before or something.

The show soon ended, and Jun was only left with a million questions that she had wanted to ask the girl, who put on a dazzling show with acrobatics and a marvelous magic trick of somehow cloning herself into 4 identical copies. Wasn't that just fancy? Thinking about how amazing a trick like that was, Jun went to go and try approach the girl, but was caught by a bouncer who had discovered her sneaking in. Thrown out, Jun pledged to keep coming back for as long as the circus would stay around here. From that point on, it became almost a daily habit to go see the acts. Instead of just musing alone on the roof and contemplating what it would be like if everything had ended, Jun found something new of interest. This was her new place of rest, something sort of like a sanctuary, where Jun could cast away all her sorrows and memories of everything and turn back time. For it was somewhere where Jun could be something she hadn't been in a long time - a child, simply awestruck by the dazzling displays.

It wasn't as if Jun was anywhere close to recovered though, with the majority of each day requiring her to be at school. It was still a far cry from that. There were too many bad memories that Jun couldn't forget. Seeing Ito or her friends brought back flashbacks she would soon rather forget, and tears would sometimes spring out of her eyes every now and then, or waves of nausea would strike.

One thing had changed though. Jun now had something to look forward to, a small flame of hope, something that said to her that it might get better. And goddamn if she was going to let go of that. The world might be a shitty place, with evil people running around unpunished, but spectacles like this would be what makes life worth living.

iU8EggM.png

[spoiler=Abilities]Aethertouched Enhancements
As one becomes an Aethertouched, all natural bodily functions are reinforced and strengthened, and thus grant enhanced strength, speed, stamina, and more. For Jun specifically, it is speed and dexterity-focused, and to a lesser extent, stamina, allowing her to do acrobatic feats that would make even professionals’ jaws drop. Her strength and durability are less pronounced, but still allow her to make hits that could break bones quite easily with bare-hand strikes, as well as take hits that would normally break a human’s bones easily.

Martial Arts
As a result of searching for martial art schools after coming to the urban side of Japan - which was fueled almost entirely by her desire to be able to fight like the kinds of superheroes she saw in her favorite anime and manga - Jun pored through dozens of different schools available, each with a different martial arts style it focused on. Lighting upon wushu, Jun felt as if it resonated with her, with the methods and styles of fighting it utilized. Upon practicing her initial lessons, she near immediately felt an intense affinity with it, with the instructors realizing it as well. However, with not much time to invest due to highschool and the work it entailed, as well as the rest of her daily life, it could be accurate to say Jun was something akin to a “gem in the rough”, or otherwise an uncut or unrefined gem. There was the talent, but without enough practice, it was not yet truly amazing. That’s not to say she wasn’t adept at it however. She can still probably kick your ass, if you’re not trained and proficient at martial arts either.

Soul Manifestation: Rope Dart - References of Rope Darts/similar weapons [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ]

[spoiler=Aethertouched Abilities]Three Strikes ‘n’ YERRRR OUT!
Able to accelerate any hand-thrown object, this ability lets Jun turn just about anything that she can throw into lethal projectiles that can reach up to Mach 1 speeds.

Home Run Stretch!
Applying to Jun’s rope dart weapon, this allows for the weapon, originally around 3-5 meters long, to be able to extend up to double its length, spanning to 10 meters. In combination with the other ability Jun can wield to send the rope dart end itself flying if she chooses to use her hand, this allows for deadly quick acceleration in combination to a shockingly long reach. Likewise, Jun can also “reel in” the weapon at extremely quick speeds to allow for her to strike back out at nearly momentum-defying angles and speeds.

[spoiler=Calder, the Soul Surfer:]RWX3JCi.png?1

"You know, I'm just gonna get out there and go bananas!"

Personal Information

Name: Calder Daniels

Age: 26

Gender: Male

[spoiler=Appearance:]

IO2DjYs.png

Height: 5 ft 9 in

Weight: 160 lb

Hair Colour: Brown

Eye Colour: Blue

Body Type: Mesomorph

Calder is a fit and athletic surf junkie. A muscular figure helps perpetuate this, him set with a strong core and broad shoulders to help keep balance upon his board. Adoring the sun, he has a light tan skin tone with no noticeable tan lines. He styled his hair into a set of cornrows that later shoot off into loose dreadlocks, alongside a groomed yet scruffy beard that frames his face, which also yields a tribal tattoo upon his left side, matching another similarly designed tattoo upon his left shoulder and arm. He is typically seen wearing comfort clothes - a floral tank top or a t-shirt or, if possible, topless in its entirety, alongside board shorts and shoes depending on the occasion.

[spoiler=Personality:]

"I'm so stoked."

To Calder, life is what you make it. He is an opportunist, an optimist, and yet goes with the flow of where he ends up. He enjoys the good of life and endures the bad, and has a strong sense of control over his life. The notion of fate and destiny is utter hogwash to him, and life in itself is meaningless. He is certainly a realist, however far from a cynic - rather, he finds this realistic interpretation of reality a fine means to justify making every moment of his worthwhile to have lived.

He leans towards optimism more heavily than pessimism, and is very "live and let live" about most things. Very few things rile him up in this regard, and he keeps those he doesn't care for away from his business, but happily spreads joy and good times with those in the mood for joy and good times. One thing that does tend to rile him up is, well, as a firm believer in people doing as they please so long as nobody is harmed out of it, people unnecessarily getting in his business, and a fierce Aussie, he'd not back down from a confrontation once he'd try to defuse the situation first. He is fairly gullible in being naturally trusting of people, though, and his upbeat lifestyle can tend to have a negative effect if people simply are on a bad page or the wrong side of the bed.

Calder is passionate about surfing, it being the core lifestyle he had adopted. He does have a competitive streak in him and enjoys a friendly competition as would anyone. While he realizes his hair is a bit ridiculous, Calder knows he's gonna shave his head at some point, hang up the board and get on with his later life, but for the while he can he's going to live up the waves as much as he can do so. He doesn't really think too much about his Aethertouched powers much, practising them in his free time and using them to help him surf. Very little gets under his skin, he's just happy and content with life.

[spoiler=Biography:]Calder's life was a good mix of good and bad that rounded him out to be the fella he is today. An Aussie, Calder was born to Ethan and Miranda Daniels, the family grew up in Sutherland for a the majority of his youth, fairly average, nothing too out of the blue. Yeah, he had a few scraps at school every now and then, but his childhood was alright. Though, a significant problem affecting the family at the time was serious financial hardship. It seemed he would have a sibling not too long after, and the family were living on bad earnings because the money was simply drying up somewhere else. On the plus side, he did learn a damn good sense of value.

It turned out the money was going on his mother, who was having an affair and spending luxuries on her boyfriend. Needless to say this drew a massive rift in the family, followed by divorce. Turns out the second child wasn't Ethan's, but Calder's father got custody of him at least, and the two eventually moved back in with his father's grandparents in Cronulla, which is where life got a bit better. Beach side was always fun, and his adolescent years were here too. He began to develop his taste for the surfing culture once he found out his father was dating a beach bunny who was really into it as well. The father and son worked as a team much during this time - Calder worked hard at his grades, his father busted his chops in the office - soon enough they had their own place again, and thinks honestly were looking great!

Until during a riot, his father had an accident that put him out of work - Calder picked up the slack and worked his ass off, and yet oddly always with a smile on his face. Nothing would beat him down into the dust, he always seemed to get back on his feet and just keep moving on. Calder went through a string of four girlfriends with the lack of female role model given the absence of his mother and his disapproval of her on the whole. He also found support from his father's new wife, Kelly, the very beach babe that brought him into surfing in the first place. After getting a college placement, though, his surfing really kicked off. His free time was split between working hard, and ripping into barrels like a barracuda. What he simply didn't realize was his natural affinity for the water came from the mysterious board that appeared one day in his room out of the blue - he assumed his father got him, but it was in fact the manifestation of his aethertouched abilities.

So what brought Cronulla's Calder all the way to Tokyo? Well, beyond the natural instinct of the Aethertouch getting closer to each other, there's nothing really convoluted about it: Going for a vacation with a few friends of his, Calder booked Tokyo given that the two hour time zone difference wouldn't jet lag him too hard, and his friends joining him abroad want to go somewhere they'd never been. Plus there's still some beaches he can manipulate for a nice surf.

Combat Information

Soul Manifestation: Surfboard[spoiler=Aethertouched Ability:]

"Listen kook, I'll teach you how to ride a sick wave!"

Calder's power manifests itself in the form of his board, which generates water beneath it upon which Calder can surf on. The board itself is significantly more durable than a simple longboard, and propels water from the tail of its bottom. Simple enough really, but it gets better. Through his board, Calder can manipulate and channel water, and the faster he surfs, the more kick behind his attacks. Naturally, an open area is his ideal domain - kind of hard to fight in a corridor when your whole motif is surfing, but he's not entirely SOL. Calder channels water through his board, however he can also channel it through his arms in a more controlled medium.

Water Cannon: A crude and rude blast of forceful water. Simple, yet damn effective at knocking people about and inflicting damage. Calder doesn't need momentum to make use of this technique, but more speed results in greater damage output from additional force.

• Compressed Water Cannon: A more refined variant of the Water Cannon technique, requiring concentration and the absence of momentum for a change. Calder is able to compressed and launch a stream of water powerful enough to cut through steel.

Waterspout: Calder summons a jet of water erupting from beneath his foes, not too much for damage, but brutal in terms of sending people flying.

High Tide: A momentum breaker with a bit of kick. Calder kicks out, riding up the lip of his wave and, well, lets the wave he was riding continue without him, to hit and knock back anyone in its path. Nice and simple really, but it really slows him down.

Whirlpool: Calder summons up a whirlpool that disorients and cripples foes trapped inside, disrupting the ability to properly control aetherial abilities involving movement while buffeted by the whirling waters.

Riptide: Calder's wave grows exponentially, and he simply surfs into a foe, crashing and slamming them with the sheer force of the wave from the speed he picked up. Typically a finishing technique, given how much moment he'd have needed to build up to execute this bulldozing attack.

Alright I had a question and forgot it but here we go

"Biography: I don’t usually require this, but considering that history is an important part of acquiring an Aethertouched soul, 2 paragraphs minimum. In spoiler."

How exactly are the souls meant to be acquired? And also are we all from Tokyo, or what?

How exactly are the souls meant to be acquired? And also are we all from Tokyo, or what?

From what I've read, the souls that contain the aether are already inside each person, but are not considered aethertouched. When a soul goes through times of great stress without breaking, though, the aether that the soul is made of compresses, and the soul becomes aethertouched.

[spoiler=The Sadist from the South]

fEwur6j.jpg
"I expect at least one scream before we're done here."

iU8EggM.png

Name: Kokoro Kurosawa

Age: 18

Soul Manifestation: Up to four sets of chains that can extend from the limbs, up to a length of 50ft each.

[spoiler=Appearance]Jqgh8jQ.jpg
At 5'6" and weighing 116 pounds, Kokoro sports very long dark hair and striking red eyes.  Her body is unscarred or otherwise unaltered save a large dragon tattoo over the majority of her back.  Or so one would hope.  In the interest of turning her own body into a weapon, Kokoro has filed her fingernails and canines to sharp points that can pierce or tear flesh.  She also possesses numerous scars between her elbows and wrists from fights since past.

iU8EggM.png

[spoiler=Personality]
If there's one thing that will never change about Kokoro, it's her personality.  She is most commonly described as a heartless monster or an evil jabroni, both of which are fairly accurate terms.  She's cruel, violent, and loves nothing more than making everyone around her miserable by any means necessary.  While she's an excellent leader, that may well be her only redeeming trait.  Kokoro's cruelty knows no bounds, to the point where not even her closest friends are safe from her vicious actions and harsh words.  Seeing others writhe in pain is among her greatest pleasures in life, as is taking those who set even a toe out of her line and beating them back into place.

If the day ever comes where she acts for somebody else's sake, they could probably get tickets to Hell's brand-new ice-skating rink afterwards to watch a monkey-written rendition of Shakespeare, see some winged pigs on the way over, and find some winning lottery tickets under their seat which they won't lose even after being struck by a bolt of lightning.  Even that far-fetched day out is more likely than Kokoro doing anything for anybody except herself.  She loves to be feared by others, and those who stand up to her are those who she finds the most enjoyment from violently putting them back in their place.  In her eyes, everyone is below her, no matter who, what, or where they are.

[spoiler=Biography]
Believe it or not,  Kokoro wasn't always this way.  Once upon a time, she was actually a rather timid, mild-mannered girl living in Okinawa.  Then Kokoro met her.

She was a vicious gang boss, in no way unlike Kokoro as she is today.  Also in no way unlike the Kokoro of today, she was Aethertouched.  However, she found herself interested in Kokoro after they met, and a relationship bloomed between the two.  Each one was everything the other wanted out of a partner and more.  She got a significant other who accepted whatever traits a partner may have had, and one who was willing to provide emotional support whenever the boss was down.  Kokoro got a strong partner who would move mountains or tear down entire towns if it was what it took to prove her love.

The story between Kokoro and her doesn't end well, however.  A rival gang boss spotted an opening and personally killed her, and only failed to kill Kokoro because she - in one final burst of life - killed her assailant.  This was the incident that turned Kokoro into an Aethertouched herself, and is supposedly the event that turned her into who she is today.  If not then, it was a few days later, at a private funeral, that Kokoro became the ruthless leader she now is.

She had written in a short will that Kokoro was to inherit everything.  The wealth, the respect, and the leading position in the gang.  She had no family to speak of, and no true friends, leaving Kokoro as the only person to be trusted with such things.  At first, some questioned her ability to lead.  Those who voiced such doubts were most surprised to find Kokoro a much different person from not long ago.  Mercy and kindness were done away with, leaving just a vicious, cruel girl with a mission.

Eradicate ALL other gangs the world over, so that nobody else will take on the same losses she suffered.  While her men have kept things under control back home, Kokoro has personally been cutting a northward gash in any rival lowlifes and criminals.  Her travels have now brought her as far north as Tokyo.

[spoiler=Aethertouched Ability]
Prophet of Pain: Kokoro is capable of manipulating the degree of pain inflicted to anyone in direct contact with her chains.  Other than enabling her to completely nullify her own pain, this enables her to greatly amplify how painful any attacks with her chains become or increase the pain of anyone unfortunate enough to get caught in them.

Aika Kurosawa is a Straw Nihilist, a hedonist, and a complete sadist. She is highly intelligent and analytical, which has probably served her, and the world, quite terribly.

[spoiler=Biography]"I'm sure my parents loved me, but they were just so poor at showing it. I know they never actually meant me any harm. [spoiler=Fiery Soul!]

Name: Valerie Clark

Age: 23

Soul Manifestation: Spear: http://i.imgur.com/wp98ZTM.jpg

[spoiler=Appearance]

"Come on let's go, we need to keep it up before we fall behind, onwards to glory!"

M8k7UaB.png?1

5‘7“ (170 cm) 145 lbs (66 kg)

[spoiler=Personality]

A high-octane kick your ass kinda girl. Valerie, or Val as she tends to be called, is a very proud and confident young lady. She takes this almost to extremes at time, truly believing she can't be beaten if she tries hard enough. Rash and reckless perfectly describe how she lives life. This can tend to make people not take her seriously, which is the one thing she hates above all others. She strives to be respected and will often take on the dumbest and impossible challenges just for this goal. If she feels she's being disrespected she'll fight. Be it with words or fists it doesn't matter as long as it gets her blood pumping and gives her a chance to defeat her foe.

On the flip side she is very slow to respect others. She doesn't go out of her way to be cruel to those she doesn't respect but she can come off as patronizing. She has absurdly high standards for others and it may not be possible to meet them. Even those in positions of power are not safe as Valerie actually has an automatic dislike of them. She sees them as thinking their better than her just because of rank or title and she seeks to prove them wrong whenever possible.

Not a modest girl at all, Val has no trouble walking about in minimal clothing. She's a creature of comfort in some regards and this is one of them. Too much clothing makes her feel trapped and uncomfortable. Similarly she keeps her hair tied up because it bothers her otherwise. She'll even stop a fight to redo her hair if it slips out. She claims she doesn't cut her hair because "I can't let it win".

Once Val has taken a shine to you, for regardless of respect Val can make friends, she'll sometimes cling to you. She thinks this is the most true form of comradery.

She's actually very friendly, as well as hyper and full of energy for things other than battle. She loves to explore and takes great pleasure in simply living life. While she can get angry fairly easily she can also forgive quickly if the one who angered her seems sincere and to be a good person. Though Val's standards on who is a good person can be somewhat skewed. To her a good person is one who is living their life to the fullest while not preventing others from doing the same.

[spoiler=Biography]

Val was once an average city girl, from New York city. She hung out with friends, usually at the mall and arcades, she struggled with school and did pretty well on her basketball team. Her family had always been pretty poor but her parents worked hard to try and make sure Val would break out of the ghetto they lived in. Even getting her into a good school that they had trouble affording. They never quite let on how hard things were on them but part of Val knew. Therefore in her Junior year in High School she secretly took on a job to help pay for bills. When she first told her parents about this, after receiving her first check, they were upset but after a long argument they let her do it as long as she kept her grades up. The burden was great on young Valerie but she carried on, growing ever more determined and confident that she would be able to forge a better life for her family.

People at school tended to look down on her, once it became known where she lived, and they typically wrote her off as some ghetto trash that wouldn't amount to anything. The friends she had grew distant after she began working and she came to realize that people generally were undeserving of her time and respect. And so she decided to make herself follow a new ideal of self-motivation, determination, and facing all challenges head-on. As it became harder to keep up with school and work, and keep food on the table, she became somewhat obsessed with the idea of fighting the struggle that is daily life. And she did a damn good job. Her grades improved, she grew more proficient in basketball, she got a new promotion at work. Things were looking up.

And then it happened. It was 3 AM when there was a loud knocking on the door. Valerie was woken up but she had gotten off a tough shift at work that evening so she was too worn out to get up. She figured that her mother or father would answer and so she didn't bother. Then the gunshots. She bolted to her feet and ran to the door. She doesn't quite remember what happened that night but when she came too she was in the hospital, her parents were dead, and a several members of a local gang had been arrested on suspect of committing the murder and robbery. Unfortunately they were let free and charges were dropped. The police told her there was nothing that could be done but Valerie didn't believe them. Since then she's written off figures of authority as weak willed and full of lies.

Valerie went through a hard time after that. She dropped school and began working three jobs. Those that worked with her previously noted that she tackled her work with a single-minded ferocity that it somewhat frightened them. Her few remaining friends barely managed to handle the new and not at all improved Valerie, but with time they were able to convince her to take a small break.
Those few friends had stuck with Val for a long time and knew her quite well by now so they figured out the one thing that could get Valerie to take a break from work. A challenge. All they wanted was a change of scenery in the hopes it would bring their old Valerie back. They decided to go hiking in the Appalachians in the Winter. Things were going great at first and Valerie was feeling somewhat refreshed from this change, as her friends had hoped. But then the snowstorm hit. It was a monster of a storm and Valerie got separated from the others. She fell into a cave and the snow and ice buried her in. She was trapped down there for several days, slowly freezing to death. But Valerie refused to go like that. She fought with every bit of energy she had to keep her body from shutting down and giving in. This triggered in her the manifestation of her Aethertouched ability. She instinctively knew just what to do and used it to burst out of what would have likely been her tomb.

Her friends thought this experience would've broken her completely. But quite the contrary she now had a renewed vigor for life. She wanted to experience more and more and enjoy every bit of life she could. Three times the usual amount in fact, for her and her deceased parents. She worries at times that she's pushing away her darker feelings caused by the struggles she faced but she's going to continue tackling life headlong and not looking back for one moment.

She set out with the money she saved to travel, and her journey eventually brought her to Tokyo city...

[spoiler=Aethertouched Ability]

Fire Generation: Can create and, mostly, control fire. This control is limited to being able to move the flames at will, which requires both energy and concentration, and to manipulate its form to a small extent. The power of this can range from ineffective to explosive depending how much passion Valerie puts into it. When combined with her typical fighting style this can be quite devastating. The power of her flames could burn an entire house down in matter of minutes when full forced. She has a perchance for doing over-the-top attacks and calling out names when she does. It's usually different even for the same attack. However a favorite of hers is...

Blazing Soul Phoenix Piercer!: An attack that uses the thrusting power of her spear to send out a powerful blast of flames in a straight line. Highly destructive but also quite inaccurate as it's very telegraphed and literally straight-forward.

Spiraling Barrier of Infernal Flames!: By spinning her spear above her head Valerie can create a column of flames that surround her, twelve feet high at most. The inside of the column could fit up to 3 average sized people at most. These flames are extremely hot and anything touching it would be caught on fire. Minor protection against projectiles, but anything launched at high speed and/or force will break through.

[spoiler=Misc]

[spoiler=Theme]

Loves to work out, feels best after a good run.

Enjoys mech anime/games with lots of explosions. And slapstick comedy.

Really likes her last name, despite how common it is, because it reminds her of Clark Kent.
