Ban Politics from the Status Bar

Can we just leave it to the debate section? I'm sick of seeing a new politic-related status every time I log on here (which is once every 30 minutes or so), and people cherry-picking random things to suit their political viewpoint. Not naming any names, but you know who you are.

It's honestly really annoying, and shouldn't have a place in the status bar, at least in this kind of magnitude. So yeah, ban it plz?

I would say just block seeing status updates from whoever you see posting them the most. I don't think we should censor the status bar aside from obvious inappropriate material like porn or whatever else. It is a general sounding board for the forum if it's too small a note to make a thread about and you could just keep scrolling past them and not participate.

I suppose you wish to have them removed because posting statuses of political nature might result in a grievance between members, however flaming and harassment is against the rules, and I am assuming they are enforced, so if they were to get out of hand they would be taken care of anyway. Apart from removing anyone's capability of expressing themselves (similar to the new Youtube policy), many meaningful discussions would be severely cut, of which political ones make a large percentage of. Removing politics from its entirety would result in no double standards and a slippery slope: any status critical of religion would be deemed politically motivated and thus removed. If you were to take these statuses personal, you can restrict your viewing of statuses to only those that you know and trust won't spew political rhetoric by clicking on the view friend's status updates button.

You can't block status updates at all. Just saying.

Banning a specific subject for reasons other than being outright inappropriate, is a slippery slope. First we ban politics. Then we ban religion. Then we ban talking about video games. Or movies. Or how our day's been going. Why? Because it's annoying and people hate seeing another status about it.

That's the problem. I'm no fan of political statuses, either, but it's not really my business to tell people not to express their political views, unless it crosses the inappropriate content barrier.

Rather than ban things, we should all try to be more conscientious toward others. Talking about politics is fine, but the statuses causing issue are often redundant, hyperbolic, and painfully frequent. There shouldn't be a rule rule against it, but when there is constantly something there, it gets really damn tiresome.

The thing religion and politics have that everything else he mentioned doesn't. is that they are absolutes and highly controversial. Unlike the other topics, these two are generally seated in either bigotry or ignorance, and don't really go anywhere else. Furthermore, these topics, while serving as a good conversation tool, ultimately does nothing productive, as you aren't going to change the other person's views on their religious/political stance. Fortunately, people tend to have the sense to stay away from religious topics.

Well, I'd rather them post politics in the status bar than quadruple post a thread no one ever wants to post on. It also attracts more responses (especially immediate ones) than a thread on this site ever will.

Also keeps it more informal instead of actually being debate-y.

It's no more invalid than any other kind of status.

Maybe we could try and learn that statuses are not a good place to actually discuss anything important?
Honestly I kind of agree that these things being in statuses sort of just cause issues.

The only real solution would be somehow blocking specific people's statuses and/or making reporting easier for statuses (in the case of flaming and such that sometimes breaks out in statuses)

I'm totally down for banning "how was your day going?" statuses. I don't really give two shits about that. Take it to twitface or whatever the funk the flavor of the month social media site the kids are using today. I go online to AVOID social interaction.

That'd be like blowing up a city to take out a gang

And this suggestion is like blowing up a forest to hit a single rabid animal, so to speak.

No reason to punish everyone for the actions of a single person, who isn't even outside of the rules in this matter. Annoying? Sure, but there's plenty of discussions (Such as Brexit) that has occurred in the bar, and it doesn't make sense to slam the entirety for an isolated example.

Oh I know. But I do think it'd be good to get better...I don't know, do something better with statuses. They're a hard to regulate area where a lot of pretty bad things can happen. Not to mention people can delete comments to hide proof of flaming and such.

If people want to discuss politics in the status bar, it's fine. There's nothing wrong with that at all. Banning a specific topic from the status bar is ridiculous. As long as the status generates discussion and isn't blatant spam then there should be no reason for it to be banned. If you don't like It, then ignore it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who like engaging in a discussion of that topic and they shouldn't be punished simply because you're sick of seeing them.
