Onis: They beat stuff up

Just Crouton

Recommended Posts

It's beatdown. This is the 3rd revamp of the archetype. I dropped a handful of support S/Ts, and simplified the effects of what cards were left in.

Koguoni's rulings
- It can't get "Onireikon" or "Oni-Totsu-Geki!!!" because in those card's cases, "Oni" is not the same as "oni", which is part of the card name (ex: Hoshioni.)

These are PURELY my own opinions on the matter, like them, or lump them. Okay, where to begin.
First thing, your cards should specify that they can't target Oni Tank T-34 and specify Fiend so they can't target Red-Headed Oni or Blue-Blooded Oni. Why am I saying this? Because, yes, even if the name isn't capitalized in the effect, it can STILL apply to Onis.

Second, are you serious? When ANY of the ordinairy Onis are attached to a Fiend-Type Xyz, they grant them their effects. Do you know how broken that is? I'll tell you how so, very. With this set, you will ONLY ever make the Oni Xyz, but there's the problem: You can basically tailor make ANY kind of Xyz through them. By simply Xyz Summoning them, you JUST created a card with a minimum of three effects. Three bloody effects, with some VERY unbalanced combos; lemme make a short list:

Indestructible when attacking: Jigokunoni + Hadoni/Kemononi
Indestructible Swarm Engine: Aiboni + Kemononi
Backrow Crusher: Buredoni + Hanmaoni
Easy Backrow Popper: Hanmaoni + Hoshioni
Mass Swarm: Buredoni + Demoni
Mass Search: Buredoni + Koguoni

And that's just example. A TCGer would probably find every feasible combo. And hell, I didn't EVEN mention the Oni Xyz', because, I didn't think I HAD to. By merits of one sentence, you create some insanely hard to beat monsters. But let's go further, considering you can Xyz Summon the higher Rank Onis with Rank 4 ones, you can create monsters with a minimum of five effects, and you can simply detach the Xyz monster(s) attached so you don't even LOSE any effects.

I hope you see where I'm going with this: By passing effects along, you can simply create Xyz Monsters with effects that would make Laggia jelly. My advice, remove the effect, or change it. As is, it is too powerful as there are no negatives about doing it. Cards like Gagaga Girl are fine because, not only does she require that you use a Gagaga monster as the second Material, but her effect in one use only. You can get these effects turn after turn after turn after turn.

Final Verdict: Change or remove the effect passing on effects as Xyz Materials. You can change it by either: 1) Make it when the material is detached, thereby making it one use only, 2) Only allow a select few to have the effect, or 3) actually give negative costs to passing those effects on. You did well with Momoni and Hoshioni, but finish the rest off.
Thoughts: It was good that you avoided Rekindling.

Okay... 2000 ATK, Level 4, no negative effect/an effect. The hell? Even todays Lv 4s with 2000 ATK either have no effects or detrimental effects. This guy defies the trope with an insanely strong effect to boot. This guy stops ALL floaters, and all Battle Phase Hand Traps. When he strikes, you cannot Fader or Swift Scarecrow. If you were attempting to stop Stall, you succeeded. And you also succeeded in creating an insanely strong monster with no cost that screams staple.

Final Verdict: Downsize his ATK. For what his effect is worth, he should be only strong enough to best a floater, NOT Rai-oh. My recommendation? 1600 ATK, no more.
Thoughts: The idea of killing floaters isn't bad, but he was too strong that it rarely mattered what he killed. He could run over commonly run 1900 ATK monsters with ease.
Errors: 'Their' hand or Graveyard'.

1900 beater that completely wipes out attempts at defence; and with Safe Zone, removes ANY threat possible. Like Jigo, she's too strong for her effect. Attacking high DEF cards to remove them SHOULD be costly.

Final Verdict: Cut her down to 1600/1700; as 1900 is too strong.
Thoughts: I've seen better.

1900 ATK with an ATK boosting effect. Also, universal piercing for Onis. Right... *Glances at Enraged Battle Ox*

Final Verdict: Ditch the ATK boosting effect, it's a pointless stapled on effect. He can stay at 1900 ATK, IF you make him the only piercer. Considering the Xyz this deck has, I wouldn't want to face them with this guy sitting there underneath one of em.
Thoughts: Universal Piercing can be cool, but then, with what Xyz this deck can spit out, I'm not so sure.
Errors: 'Piercing Damage'

Okay, do you have a high ATK, excellent effect fetish? Cause, that's the impression you have left on me. This girl can run over a fair few cards, and with Gekidoni, will be running over the commonly played 2500 ATK monsters; then, you get a free summon.

Final Verdict: Reduce her to 1500 ATK, therefore, you have to build effort in order to make her useful. Or change her to a floater (/w 1500 ATK) instead, cause, as she is, she's too strong.
Thoughts: I have liked concepts like this, but you need to know what the balance is.
Errors: 'When this card destroys an opponents monster by battle: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or below 'oni' monster (except "Demoni") from your deck.'

Reverse Black-Winged Dragon effect to completely stop burn, with a dash of Ancient Gear effect. Me no likey. You can't staple on effects just because you think one of them is underwhelming, things don't work like that.

Final Verdict: Ditch the ATK gaining effect. Simply having an Ancient Gear clause is enough for a monster.
Thoughts: You don't like Stall-burn, do you?
Errors: 'If an opponent's card effect would inflict damage to you; Negate the damage and increase this card's ATK by the amount Negated.'

M'kay, so before damage calculation, you pop a S/T for free. Even IF it is a ram, you get to destroy a card for peanuts. Also, given her effect, I am about 60% positive that she stops your opponent from even activating cards to counterattack, such as D-Prison or Mirror Force. So, not only can she attack freely, but she destroys your opponent's backrow to boot.

Final Verdict: Make it so she has to destroy a monster in order to take out a backrow card. As her effect right now let's her dodge attack-negating effects and can force replays by attacking a monster and then destroying the Call of the Haunted or an equivalent attached to it. Reduce her ATK to 1600 as well, considering we already HAVE enough backrow hate.
Thoughts: Meh.

*Mouth hangs open* I... how? Wha..? Not only does she have a Special Summon clause, but also sports an effect to tear up opponent's monsters. Please tell me you saw something wrong with this picture. Add on Gekidoni, and, god, I don't even want to imagine.

Final Verdict: Okay, remove the Special Summon clause, no seriously, remove it. Bushidoni already HAS a Special Summon clause, so, in one turn, you could: Summon Aiboni, SS Bushidoni, SS Buredoni, then NS an Oni. You just made 2 Xyz monsters effortlessly. Further, allow her to only gain one additional attack. Field sweepers are not good for this game.
Thoughts: You had a concept, but went WAY to far with it.

Ah yes, the additional NS clause, how I have known thee. But, after going this far, I must ask: WHY are they all so ATK intensive. Surely you can have some defensive Onis lying around.

Final Verdict: Add the clause '(You may only gain this effect once per turn.)', otherwise, Aibonis can stack.
Thoughts: One of the reasons why allowing Xyz Material effects to pass on to the Xyz monster is a very bad idea.

Okay, I'm not sure, but certainly you are familiar with Royal Oppression right? The card that you can SS spam your turn, then flip it before your opponent can even counter? Same thing. This card punishes a function of the game that has become rather huge, whilst you aren't even affected by it at all. What's to stop you countering an opponent SSing 3 monsters by using Kinyuoni to SS 3 of these from your deck?

Final Verdict: Your Onis can spam insanely well, so you can easily be screwing your Opponent's SS cards out of 2000 ATK by turn three. 2000 is quite a large difference in ATK. Make it a set reduction of 500 if you control another Oni monster. If not, then you should make it so your SSed cards are afflicted as well, since this archtype can SS quite well without punishment.
Thoughts: Another case of going too far. When building an Archtype, you should pay attention to how the cards interact with each other.

Let's see: Torrential proof? Check. Solemn proof? Check. Inzektor proof? Check. I trust you see where this analogy is going.

Final Verdict: Being Trap proof is one thing, but then having an effect that prevents targetting? Were you REALLY paying attention when you were making these cards? As is stands, if she's there first, not even Skill Drain can remove her. Plus she's immune to Chalice. If you want to remove her, you have to either Dark Hole, or Black Rose Dragon it; but they won't get the chance as you already stuck this thing into Enmaoni anyways. Get rid of one of those effects, preferably the trap immunity.
Thoughts: Just because you can't target her, that doesn't stop her being way too much. With Shizu out, you're crushing SSed monsters out of 800 ATK already, so over running her isn't an option unless you're Dino-Rabbit. And then, as I listed, using her to guard Xyz monsters.

I'm on the fence with this guy. I mean, the token effect is by and large useless.

Final Verdict: I dunno, I guess you should reduce his ATK to 1500, so he should have ATK equal to the tokens he's summoning.
Thoughts: Eh.

Yay, free SS clause. Does his actual effect HONESTLY matter? All you are going to do is SS then Xyz, what more is there?

Final Verdict: Ditch that SS clause, you already have an extra Normal Summon.
Thoughts: He's fine, except that SS.

More like Cameltoeni (hint, hint). So, she adds Oni card from the grave to the hand. I think that also lets her recycle the Xyz back to the Extra Deck (not 100% positive on this.) This card can add ANY card with 'oni' in its name, irregardless of capitalization. Make it monsters, as grabbing any card for an easy to fulfil cost is... you get my point.

Final Verdict: Careful wording is important, never toss out the word 'card' lightly.
Thoughts: Recycling isn't too bad, granted, it'll most likely be Bushidoni you're recycling.

You punish Hand Traps with Jigokunoni, but use one anyways. Coughhypocritecough. A once per turn battle protection is alright, as she's weak.

Final Verdict: Increase the amount of ATK reduced by the Attached Xyz Material effect, like 500/600. I guess her SS isn't bad, she's no Gorz.
Thoughts: Trag does it better.

1200 with a direct ATK, next.

Final Verdict: Reduce her ATK to 1000, to reflect her negative side effect.
Thoughts: In some cases, her Attached effect will end up VERY abused.

You normally have the major boss last, but whatever; let's look at this beast. He requires 2 Rank 4 Oni Xyz that weren't Summoned that turn. Considering you're passing on effects, they'd have more than enough defence to survive. And then, they GET to pass that defence along to this guy. As it stands, he can gain 4 different effects from the Base Onis. Such as Kemoni to prevent targetting effects, Kanaboni to give his 5000 ATK bulk Piercing, Buredoni to keep attacking and wipe out all defences, & finally Demoni to continue the spread. His 2 Xyz material cost is non-existant, you'll ONLY Detach the Xyz monsters attached to him. And once his effect goes off, you've basically won. Since those 2 3000 ATK Fiends you just made will most likely have Piercing, thanks to Kanaboni. This guy is why passed on effects are bad.

Final Verdict: God, where do I begin? First of all, his Summoning conditions outweigh his ATK. It's EASY to keep 2 Rank 4s for a turn; hell, you've probably already WON with them. This guy, at best, is only worth a 3200 ATK body. Now, the major matter is that he's most likely GAINING 6 Materials in his Summoning (both Xyz monsters plus their unspent charges). Further, he's GAINING 4 more effects, to a total of 6 effects, and when he uses his Materials, he won't lose ANYTHING, as you just ditch the Xyz monsters. But, I must ask, WHY do the Summoned monsters (obviously Onis) get set to 3000? It doesn't matter if they can't go direct, with Kanaboni they're PIERCING. You spam Xyz out the yin-yang anyways.

All I can say is this: Reduce his ATK to 3200. Make him require 2 Xyz monsters with no Materials left. He can keep his defensive ability. And finally, bringing those 2 Oni back is more than enough. NO ATK buffs.
Thoughts: This is severe evidence that you didn't think about how the Onis would work together.

Hello Thunder Charger Syndrome. Like I said about Mugen, the Detach effects are moot. You'll only EVER Detach the Xyz monster, never the materials. Which is just super when you JUST Detached a Enmaoni for a 2500 ATK boost. Yeah, that's nice, a 5500 Piercer with the Ancient Gear clause. The last effect... I'll discuss in Final Verdict.

Final Verdict: The boost should last until your End Phase, not your opponent's. Like Mugen, this guy should only require a spent Xyz Monster, not one with 2 free effects to pass on.

Now, that second effect. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! No, no, remember what I said about Stapled-on effects? THIS IS WHY! Once you get rid of an Xyz monster, it's MEANT TO STAY DEAD. This card's applications are near universal in buffing the Onis. And, you made him equippable every turn? What would EVEN be the point of destroying it? It'll be back next turn. Yeah, let's just DOUBLE Mugen's ATK, cause 10000 ATK is A-OK. Remove this effect, as you can simply Gale Dogra it for free buffing.
Thoughts: First effect is fine, but the creation of that second effect was moronic for all its applications.
Errors: 'opponents End Phase.'

Next up, Homoni. Yay, more unnecessary backrow hate. And the usual requiring of a Rank 4... did the concept of Onis that WEREN'T Level 4 just elude you? Or were you just too afraid to create cards that MAY buff Dark Worlds? 3 Level 5 is pointless; he's not even that strong and Dark Worlds rarely run Goldd/Sillva. More to the point that his Detach basically needs an Oni anyways.

Final Verdict: He should require a spent Xyz monster, so you aren't rewarding yourself for using a Xyz monster over your abitrary 3 Level 5s. Now then, WHY DID YOU NEED TO USE THAT ARBITRARY EQUIP EFFECT AGAIN?! Didn't you think the idea was ridiculous enough with Dai? You should be using S/Ts to support Onis, not equipped Xyz monsters. Seriously, equipping almost ANY of the base Onis with this is absurd for what they do. Remove the effect.
Thoughts: Underwhelming considering what you use to bring him out, with a stupid Stapled-on effect to boot.

Okay, your logic must've shut down when making these Xyz. Using Enemaoni, you create the PERFECT barrier to halt your opponent so you can get out Sakura or Dai, and then you still have an effect to pass on, most likely Kemononi. And what the hell is with the random Shrink effect? That's hardly defensive.

Final Verdict: Being on the defensive is fine, but that Shrink effect is completely pointless. The barrier can stay, but the Shrink effect is needlessly stapled-on. A running theme it seems.
Thoughts: Waboku + Shrink, clearly that'd end well.
Errors: 'from this card, if the Detached Material was an "oni" card; until'

Oh joy, yet another sweeper. Face it, you'd Summon it with Buredoni and Demoni, period.

Final Verdict: If you want to sweep the field, lose both Materials. All extra attack Xyz get one attack for one material, why should this card get special treatment?
Thoughts: Kachi-Kochi is fair, this isn't.
Error: 'this turn, this card can attack each monster your opponent controls. (This card can only attack each monster once.)'

Oh joy, a Special Summoner, and from the grave as well. Even if it can't be used as an Xyz Material, you wouldn't really use this anyways. But you can just as easily summon Aioni and begin a new chain anyways.

Final Verdict: The restrictions are fine, but deny them their effects.
Thoughts: Eh.
Errors: 'You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "oni" monster from your hand or Graveyard.'

At the cost of 1 Xyz Material, he's free to wreck any monster he desires, with no chance of them being able to counter-effect him. And then, he gets to wreck the card behind them as well. Not already ignoring an Ancient Gear clause that can be given to him. I'd rather use Enmaoni geared with Hanmaoni and save the trouble of making this guy.

Final Verdict: The other Xyz are better.
Thoughts: See above.
Errors: 'When this card', delete the extra space between 'monster' and 'at', 'Xyz Material', 'opponents monster's', 'battling monster; destroy it'.

So, 1 for 1 destruction, pretty basic, and again, pointless. You'd use the effects of the Attached monsters over his own effect, considering his power boost is derived from his Attached cards. You'd do as well just making a Pearl clone than this guy.

Final Verdict: He's sub-par for an Xyz.
Thoughts: I wouldn't bother making him unless I DESPERATELY needed to destroy something.
Errors: 'from this card, if that detached Xyz Material was an "oni" card; destroy'

Oni style RotA that can be recycled by Koguoni, joy.

Final Verdict: Add a clause to prevent recycling of this card.
Thoughts: RotA

I'm not sure about this card. Free buff to ATK, but then it negates opponents monster effects, which a lot of your cards seem to do. Make the negation only apply when you attack, or better yet, just make it a Normal Spell.

Final Verdict: Make it a Normal Spell
Thoughts: That's a huge b***h.

Hello there Icarus Attack, how ya doing? Why are you wearing that funny outfit?

Final Verdict: The cost is non-existant, the Onis spam too hard to let it. 1 for 1 removal pls.
Thoughts: Icarus Attack in a bikini.

Okay, what the actual f**k? If your opponent SSs, this card lets you match them, from your deck. From. Your. Deck. Now then, this is obviously Rabbit hate, but that's no excuse. You don't create balanced cards by attempting to match it with broken ones.

Final Verdict: Allow yourself only 1 SS, any more is retarded.
Thoughts: What the hell does Kinkyuoni even mean?

Hello Call of the Haunted/Xyz Reborn hybrid. So, instead of running two entirely different traps with entirely different purposes, you smashed them both together. The last effect is pretty much meaningless as you are GOING to be Summoning Xyz monsters with this, thereby bypassing the effect as 'leaving the field' effects do not apply to Attached Materials.

Final Verdict: Make it destroy the Xyz monster that Detached it after the Xyz monster's effects apply. Or better yet, make it CotH, or Xyz Reborn; not both.
Thoughts: CotH/Xyz Reborn do it better.

Adjusting the name rulings to make it clearer.

"-oni" =/= "Oni"

The rulings for these are that "-oni" (as in as part of a word, on the end of the word, similar to Vehicroid) is not the same as "Oni" (as in anywhere else on the card name, i.e. Mugen-Shukenja-Oni, Dai-Kyojin-Oni, Onireikon, Oni-Totsu-Geki! etc.) That's why Koguoni can recycle "Gekidoni" and not "Onireikon".

Card changes:
- (For all the Main Deck monsters) Only the Rank 4 "-oni"s gain the extra effects now (from just Fiend's in general), and the bigger ones don't because they're "Oni"s and not "-oni"s (already a ruling, but adjusted for clarity).
- Kinkyuoni shuffles the targets back into the Deck at End Phase to avoid permanently thinning the Deck by 1-2 while building a board (unless the opponent runs Lavals, Rabbit, or Block Golem, you'll likely never get more than 1 monster from Kinkyuoni.)
- Enma only has the Shrink effect (from destruction immunity + Shrink)
- Sorei detaches 2 (from 1)
