Gladiators

Recommended Posts

Gladiators, a popular and efficient way of being a form of anti-meta in their own right. They've survived and continue to survive within the Meta/Undermeta and there most likely will be some form or variation that will be run in the tournaments and sometimes even climb to the tops as a form of rouge deck. They've received on-going support that benefits them more efficiently even up to date.

You will see almost any deck run at least 1 of these.

Chariot and Proving Grounds will almost always be key staples. Chariot MAKES plays and being a recycle-able Counter Trap, is one of the key backbone cards of the Deck that gives Glad Beasts an edge over several decks. Test Tiger and Taming are okay, and are the only other cards actually worth noting but are usually outclassed or brought to being useless by other cards, deck types, etc.

Gyzarus, the key star and the one card that's sheerly devestating. If you run a Glad Beast Deck, you run Gyzarus. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Essedari, one of the newest direct additions to the archtype gave Gladiators more flexibility. Regardless of the fact that it's a supposed "Vanilla" Gladiator, the way it was made makes it an incredibly flexible card and a powerful asset to the archtype. Last but not least Heraklinos. One of my favorite boss monsters and can potently bring about a card effect "Lock" when comboes with Chariot. It usually speaks "GG" when you have him out, the resources to get his effect off and the backrow to support him, mainly Chariot. However, it's usually recommended only at 1-0 because of the number of cards required to get him off. It's not difficult, but sometimes it's also not worth it.

Discuss this archtype, and potently it's variations as well as it's place, effect, further support, etc.

Taming is god awful for use in a Gladiator Beast deck.

You're better of using Enemy Controller. They're both quick plays, both switch monsters battle position, but E-Con doesn't require you to have a Gladiator on the field so it's not a dead draw if you're top decking. (And Book of Moon is better, obviously, but I'm looking at the effect specifically)

This is one of my favorite archetypes, so I'm glad there's a thread dedicated to building a good deck for them.

I see whut u did there :P

TBH, The only thing I would've wished Konami to do in all honesty is the following on Essedari:
2 "Gladiator Beast" monsters
This card can only be Special Summoned from your Extra Deck by returning the above cards you control to the Deck. (You do not use "Polymerization".) At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card attacked or was attacked: You can shuffle it into the Deck; Special Summon 1 "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck.
That would've been awesome.

Variants:

HERO Glads: Gladiator Beasts using Elemental HERO Prisma with A Hero Lives and Test Tiger for explosive Contact Fusion combos. Much faster than normal Gladiator Beasts and requires completely different tactics to beat, but riskier because if any combo piece is intercepted you'll take severe damage.

Safecutor: A Deck that protects and abuses Gladiator Beast Secutor. Like most Decks based around a single card, it's lethal when it works and pitiful when it doesn't.

Rabbit Glads: Gladiator Beasts using Rescue Rabbit and Gladiator Beast Andal to make Essedarii and sustain field advantage. Not very powerful due to high likelihood of dead draws.

Firestar Glads: Gladiator Beasts using the Flaming Star Beast-Warrior support, particularly Flaming Dance - Tenki, for power boosts and defensive tricks. May also use Flaming Star monsters for cheap Main Phase removal, which can be followed up with a Gladiator Beast's effect.

Taming is only good in Mirror Match where it's outstanding. I've played this deck off and on for the last few years and I just got the Max Rarity core a few days ago so I played it at one locals, just the pure build with 9 Glads + Thunder King. I played the Deck back when Cat was around which was reaaaaally good.

Ah, Tenki...even if you don't run Firestar Glads, it's a decent tech giving you 1900 ATK laquaries, All the archtype (at it's base) needs is a more efficient way of getting "Gladiator" Spell/Traps to their hand other than Samnite. If Konami does that, Glads will be a few more consistent deck...probably not as consistent as the Rescue Cat era, but consistent non the less.

Well I'm going to the RC section to give them 1 unique kind of support. Also:

...why does "Test Tiger" generally suck beside being a -1? Or wait...is that just it?
It's not that bad; it generally funds a +1 or +many. The problem is that the Deck has to be monster-heavy or Tiger will be dead in the hand, and there's also the matter of +1 Torrentials or what have you.

Just built them for the first time (AHL variant). Is one Murmillo enough? How many Proving Ground should I be running? Is there a poing on running multiple Gyzarus/Essedari? Also, what's your opinion about Stratos in this deck?
AHL needs only 1 Murmillo. Proving Ground at 1-2 depending on the monster/backrow ratio, Gyzarus at 2 (in case the solemn the 1st), I run only 1 Essedari because he sees play, but not a significant amount of the time, and Stratos in Alive Glads is good in every way.

That second playmat is f***ing beast. No pun intended.

I still want it! D:
