Character Deck "Format" [Passing this on, read recent discussion]

Recommended Posts

It's basically the same as regular format, using almost the same exact banlist, and other than that it has restrictions on deck building.

The Rules:
- Only two people can play as each character, one being the "alter ego".
- At least 15 of your cards must be cards your character has played, including copies, in their Main Deck from the official anime, manga, or movies. Some characters may require more.
- Mystical Space Typhoon and Dark Hole are excluded from counting as "character cards".
- Stick to your character's cards as the focus for the deck as much as possible. It is okay to have secondary engines, but the non-character cards in your deck should not operate exclusively without your Character cards. (Ex. You should not be running a Mermail deck with some of Shark's cards, or using a Laval deck with some of Jack's cards in it.)
- Allowed a Side Deck consisting of no more than 11 cards your Character doesn't use, in addition to any number of cards they do use, and you can never side out to have less Character cards in your deck than the minimum for your character.
- The Extra Deck may include only FOUR cards not in the character's Extra Deck unless otherwise stated, including copies. Of these 4, only 2 may be the same card. (IE, you can have 2 Maestroke, 1 Utopia, and 1 Gagaga Cowboy, but not 2 Maestroke and 2 Utopia or 3 Maestroke and 1 Utopia).

--- In addition to this rule, players will now be allowed to take one "freebie" card to add a single copy of to their Extra Deck from the list below that does not count for the Extra Deck limitations. Additional copies will count as non-character cards.
- You must use AT LEAST 2 Spells and 2 Traps your character used. IE, you cannot use 21 of their monsters and call it good. Certain characters do not apply.

- Both players may control a Field Spell Card at a time. (When the other player activates theirs, yours is not destroyed)

I like the idea for a tournament. Character-based strategies, with some level of freedom.

The most iffy thing is that it depends on a case-by-case basis in all decks to judge, so it sounds like a pain to keep in check. Though that's understandable.

Yeah, that's the main problem. There's never going to be a true balance between characters since they all have specific cards they can use, but I'm trying my best to keep the really overpowering decks out of the loop.

So, it's brought to my attention after I start things that I wasn't entirely thinking things out with Jaden. Not sure how else to balance it right now than making it so he can only use his own card for the Extra Deck. Also, I'm considering adding a limit of a maximum of either 3 or 5 Elemental Dragons for a deck.

Just ban the omni-heroes. If you do that, then the deck would work fine.

Crow, Kiryu, and probably Rua (I fear morphotronic beatdown) seem like they would overpower people in this tourney

Also you could do Gauche and Droite you would just lighten the burden on the amount of cards from the characters they are forced to use. I mean you could also have the chronomally kid, the hunder user from the manga

In short after a while it becomes which characters have enough archetype support to have a balanced and decent deck.

It becomes extremely difficult to use at that point. I think a better solution, if it came down to that, would be to make them not count as Character cards, so they would be able to play a maximum of three of them, and if they did, they wouldn't have anything else.

I forgot to add Crow and Kiryu to the ban list, though I wouldn't have allowed anyone to play as them anyways. I was looking at Droite while I was writing up considered characters, but she really doesn't have enough cards for a deck, and I'm not going to start adding characters with restrictions as silly as 10 or 12 cards. Chronomolies also have a lot of OTK potential. Thunder Spark also doesn't have enough cards.

After much consideration, complaints, and personal experience with the cards, I am banning the Elemental Dragons from the tournament.

Other than banning The Shining, what changes would you think are necessary for Jaden? I feel like Mask Change with Acid + Absolute Zero is a bit of a BS combo, but by themselves the cards are just good, not amazing.

  • 1 month later...

Now that the third tournament is finished, and I've gotten to see some decks in action, I am slightly worried about Tron, a little bit about Akiza, and unsure about Mai still (even though we didn't have one this time). I am also still trying to see what to do about Jaden. I think I will ban Ab0.

So basically, these are my thoughts from the previous tournament:

-Ban E-Dragons

-Ban E-Hero The Shining

-Ban E-Hero Absolute Zero

-Tron decks can only use 1 non-Character card

Since I was the one running Aki's deck, I just thought that I should mention a couple of points that I noticed while playing the deck.

First of all, against literally every deck I faced, the deck really struggles against raw strength, since the only monster I could rely on for countering that was Tytannial, and in all honesty, they got taken down far too easily.

On another note, enforcing the use of 21 character cards was dangerous towards designing the deck, since she uses far too many useless/situational cards that I was forced to include to meet the minimum requirements (such as Blossom Bombardment, Wall of Thorns, etc.) This was due to the fact that several of the key cards that the deck revolved around (Lonefire, Tytannial, Miracle Fertilizer) were cards that she did not use (not counting the video games).

Yeah, the main issue I found was that the cards that were actually played with her deck... weren't her cards. Which is never a good thing for a tournament like this. Even a deck like mine which had E-Dragons it was easy to tell that it revolved around Armed Dragons, which was something Chazz used.

Also, I plan on creating a list of every card usable for each character so people won't get confused anymore. It will be pretty hard for some characters.... so this might take some time.

What I was sad about was that I was only able to go into Black Rose twice the whole tournament, despite running 3 Twilight Rose Knights and a multitude of her Level 4 Plants...

But yeah, though she does have a small number of cards which I found myself using often (such as Gigaplant, Fallen Angel of Roses, Mark of the Rose, Rosaria, Blue Rose, Lord Poison, etc.), the fact is that using those alone wouldn't get anywhere, which is why cards like Lonefire and Tytannial had to be essential to make the deck work (and that's exactly why her in-game decks were even the slightest bit effective :p).

But actually, in your case I would suggest creating a list of cards that they can't use rather than a list of cards that they can, since that would probably amount to a lot less work. And once again, thank god E-Dragons will be banned in the next tournament xD

Oh, I misunderstood; my bad. I didn't know you were restricting their card pools to strictly cards that they had used. I thought you meant to make a list of cards that should not be used with each character due to either being an outcast to the rest of their deck or just for being too abusable or something along those lines.

Slowly getting the card pools updated. Let me know if you see any cards missing from them. I am considering adding special rules to certain characters, such as Joey being able to change a coin flip once per duel. Don't know if I would go through with that, though, or even if I would keep the characters who would need it.

EDIT: Well, forget that idea. I think I hit my link limit or something and then it deleted all of the stuff I had posted... Lots of wasted time, and plus now I don't know what else got deleted, including some characters.

What would you guys think about a "lower tier" character tournament where you can only use the "bad" characters?

That sounds like a pretty bad idea to me. Bunch of people dueling bad deck... each duel would take forever. People probably won't join.
