Archetypes with Longevity

Recommended Posts

I've run a Gravekeeper deck since before GX (holyballsthatseemslikealongtimelookingbacknow) and I'm suprised at how, with only minimal changes and adjustments in accordance with the ban lists over the years, Gravekeepers manage standing up to most every new deck they come across.

So itt: just... Appreciation for Gravekeepers, and any other decks that have been doing amazing since vanilla.

Minimal changes except they got a 2000 wall that searches Necrovalley/itself/anything but Spy and a 2000 beater that can tribute things do deal with the big monsters Gravekeepers struggle with. I don't think they'd ever be anything if those 2 hadn't been printed. But there's been a few archetypes that have been going and kept alive thanks to new support such as E-Heroes, Samurai and now Archfiend.

I see your point, Descendant helped Keepers ALOT when Absolute Powerforce came out. But Spy was much earlier than Descendant so I kinda just heaped her with the rest of the keepers.

E-Heroes have lasted a huge while since GX, and come to think of it you don't see many machine decks that don't run Cyber Dragon with them anymore.

Well, nothing is *really* relevant nowadays with the hyper-accelerating meta, but BWs have, yes, fallen from their former glory, but are still fairly decent, and GBs have still managed to remain a good undermeta deck as well.

Though, I guess they haven't been around since forever, so...whatever. I don't really think there's much from those days that still remains any good.

Karakuris come to mind.

Karakuri are anything but an old archetype. They're more recent than Infernity, X-Saber and loads more random stuff.

Volcanics have done a good job of staying relevant, mainly due to Shell, I mean any deck can stay relevant if it has a card like Spy/Shell/Stratos/Gateway (even though it's a fairly recent card) and the like. And Burei falls under than category too.

If you count Karakuri Spider, then Karakuri are an extremely old archetype :p

OT: Having played this game for the majority of my life, I can tell you that no decks can hold on to meta status for more than a couple of years.

If you count Oscillo Hero 2 Watts are an ancient archetype :/

I definitely see Lightsworns being used over and over again down the road. I also don't see Six Sams slowing down anytime soon.

The only things keeping Lightsworn in check are the power creep, they're too slow to deal with the meta, and Charge @1. Six Sams have definitely slowed down a heap. Again, the meta is just too fast for their one shien to try and keep up with.

OT: Gadgets are still very much relevant and they've been around since Yugi's days. That's saying something. Also, Harpies have been around almost as long as Blue Eyes.

I don't think decks that didnt even qualify for being called 'competitive' count, so correct me if I'm wrong but Harpies and Archfiend weren't real decks before their new support that they got lately. But yeah GKs are an old favorite of mine, and I even played them a few years ago before the new support and they were pretty good I guess. Gadgets and HEROs too.

What I think makes this kind of thing (decks being relevant to meta for a few years even if on and off) is the face that those decks I mention for example are  recognised more as anti-meta-style decks, which what kept them being able to stand up to the meta.

I played Gravekeepers for over a year before I quit a year ago. They destroyed Infernities if you played Gravekeepers right during the Infernity golden era.

By the way, I like your profile picture, dat Rin from Katawa Shoujo.
