Chaos (Series) TCG Guide

So, you plan on making a Chaos deck, hm? Well, you need to know that Chaos (That being monsters summoned by banishing either Light/Dark monster(s) from the Graveyard) come with a number of drawbacks that you may not be interested in:

 • Laughably slow early game
 • Massive reliance on Graveyard
 • Relatively easy to lock down
 • Difficult to side against bad match-ups
 • Potentially long turns
 • On/off banlists
 • Next to no decent support

Think you can move past the bad of Chaos? Well, lets move into what makes Chaos decks so powerful...

 • Attack Strength/Some good effects
 • Little hand advantage necessary
 • You can Synchro/Xyz for the big guys
 • Hard to take down head-on

As you can see, there are more cons than pros for this series. Keep in mind this is a Series, not an Archetype. There are no tutors for Chaos monsters, there is no decent Spell/Trap support specifically for Chaos. But, if you really want to, you can take a look at the sections below. Keep in mind this is as much a guide to creating a powerful Chaos deck as it is a guide to counter them.
Your primary Chaos monsters may differ depending on the direction you plan on going; a number of Chaos variants exist; Chaos Dragons, Chaos Plants, Twilight, Chaosworn, etc. But, lets go over the (good) actual Chaos monsters and discuss their pros and cons.

300px-BlackLusterSoldierEnvoyoftheBeginn

Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning (BLS)

BLS is one of the most hated cards in the game, and arguably the most powerful Chaos card that isnt forbidden. What are his pros?

 • 3000 ATK, Level 8, Light
 • Banishes OPT
 • Can attack TWICE.
 • Laughably easy to summon.

I kid you not, this card can win games; and it has. His drawbacks are also only as bad as any other boss monster, save one:

 • Summon can be negated
 • Can be targeted and destroyed
 • LIMITED, formerly FORBIDDEN.

Yes, our good buddy has been off and on in terms of how many, if any, you can run. Currently, he is allowed at 1. Luckily, if you are running a Chaos deck, you can use him as your Light Banish for one of your other guys, such as this one:

300px-ChaosSorcerer-LCYW-EN-SR-1E.png

Chaos Sorcerer

Chaos Sorcerer is another currently Limited Chaos monster, but as you can see, he shares the OPT Banish effect of BLS, making him a worthy potential candidate for most Chaos Variants. Additionally, he does have the advantage of another of our Chaos monster in that he is Level 6, which means you can absolutely Xyz him with another Chaos for a larger monster with potentially a more situationally useful effect.

Oh, and he's Dark, so if he gets sent to the grave one way or another, he's Chaos fodder as you deem fit.

300px-LightpulsarDragon-SDDC-EN-UR-1E.pn

Lightpulsar Dragon

Speaking of Level 6 Chaos monsters, Lightpulsar Dragon is one of the most helpful with his brother, coming up later. Like most Chaos monster, you can Summon him from the hand by merely banishing a LIGHT and DARK from the grave, but he is special. You see, you can also Summon him from the Graveyard by discarding a LIGHT and DARK; which means not only do you get a 2500 ATK Level 6, but your grave is fully set up for another Chaos summon! As if this wasnt good enough, he gets sent to the graveyard from the field, you can Summon his brother - or any DARK Dragon that is Level 5 or higher - from the Graveyard!

And now his brother:

300px-DarkflareDragon-SDDC-EN-UR-1E.png

Darkflare Dragon

Darkflare Dragon and Lightpulsar Dragon almost HAVE to be in a deck together; you'd be silly to run one but not the other! Why run Darkflare? Well, remember Lightpulsar's effect to resurrect himself from the grave? Well if you dont have one and you want one, you can use Darkflare's effect to discard a dragon, send Lightpulsar from your deck to the graveyard (This is a cost, by the way. Veiler can't stop you from doing this >:{D) AND banish a card from either Graveyard, most probably your opponent's. Then simply use Lightpulsar's return effect. Oh, and did I mention if this guy and Lightpulsar are destroyed TOGETHER (Dark Hole, Torrential, etc) you can STILL use Lightpulsar's effect to save Darkflare! Brotherly love. <3

Oh, I almost forgot. In case you didn't notice, unlike previous Chaos monsters, these two CAN be Normal Summoned. Now, back to normal, Semi-Nomi Chaos:

300px-WhiteDragonWyverburster-SHSP-EN-C-300px-BlackDragonCollapserpent-SHSP-EN-C

White Dragon Wyverburster and Black Dragon Collapservent

As if we didnt have enough Chaos Dragon brotherly love, these two go hand in hand by name! They differ in the previous Chaos monsters though, because instead of banishing a LIGHT and DARK monster, they only banish one (DARK for White Dragon and LIGHT for White Dragon). But, when they are destroyed, they search for their counterpart! The only drawback is you can't summon two of the same monster the same turn, but you can absolutely summon both of them! They make for good tributes for Lightpulsar/Darkflare in early game, if you have only 1 LIGHT or 1 DARK monster in the graveyard.

Chaos has very limited support, and a lot of it isnt all that good. Here ill show you what good support monsters you should consider, and which ones to ignore.

300px-ChaosGoddessTSHD-EN-ScR-1E.png

Chaos Goddess

Goddess is one to consider if you plan on Synchroing. Unlike Lightpulsar's destruction effect, Chaos Goddess can summon any DARK monster from the graveyard, granted it is Level 5 or higher. It has the slight catch of not being able to Synchro with it, but in all likelihood you wont be planning on it anyway. She has the same ATK as Lightpulsar, but her Defense is lacking for mid to late game. But, she is LIGHT, so she can be banish fodder if you need it. Just remember you Graveyard will be filling up with LIGHT monsters faster than DARKs if you use her effect.

300px-LightandDarknessDragon-AP02-EN-C-U

Light and Darkness Dragon (LaDD)

LaDD, I hate to say, is not often a good choice, at least not for main decking. Lets talk cons:

 • Cannot be Special Summoned
 • Only LIGHT and/or DARK on the field
 • Negates only once per chain
 • Reduces ATK substantially
 • Nukes your side only

She does have pros though, don't worry:

 • LIGHT and DARK on field
 • Negates Spell/Traps
 • Special Summons ANY monster in Graveyard on destruction

Notice being LIGHT and DARK is a pro and a con. What I mean by it being a con is, it would be better if it was bother/either/or in the Graveyard as well, because then she could be used as either the DARK or LIGHT Chaos banish. But, in positive terms, you can use both LIGHT and DARK monster support on her. But alas, her negation effect is not quite good enough to be recommended at anything higher than 1, if that. So long as your opponent is OK with losing a couple of spell or traps, LaDD can be whittled down to an acceptable ATK to be destroyed with ease. Then they can use Spell and Trap cards at will to deal with her successor.

300px-EclipseWyvern-SDDC-EN-SR-1E.png

Eclipse Wyvern

Eclipse Wyvern is only useful in Chaos Dragon builds, and not always, either. When she gets sent to the graveyard, you get to banish a Level 7 or higher Dragon. Why is this a good thing? Because when she is banished (Via Chaos Summoning, she is LIGHT) you get to add that to your hand. So why is this not always useful for Chaos Dragons, then? Because there are no "Chaos Dragons" that are Level 7 or higher; you'd be doing it for a non-chaos. Typically you would do this for a Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon or Dark Armed dragon, though, which are not used in all builds but definitely help in ones built to house them.

SphereofChaosRGBT-EN-ScR-1E.jpg

Sphere of Chaos

This- this is a bad card. The only reason it is here is because it is Chaos support, but it isnt good at all. It has literally one pro: OPT Battle protection. But it has numerous flaws.

 • Level 5, requires Tribute
 • Machine, so Chimeratech
 • Bad Stats
 • Next to useless effect.

You aren't going to be needing many if any Level 3 or lower monsters in your hand, and sacrificing for this monster with mediocre ATK and DEF to search them just isnt smart play.

300px-ChaosNecromancer-BP01-EN-SFR-1E.pn

Chaos Necromancer

Ideally Chaos Necromancer wont be of much use in a good Chaos Deck; you'll be banishing monsters from your Graveyard as much as possible to summon your stronger monsters. This card is best used in non-Chaos decks, but if you are running Chaosworns or some other variant where you may not be banishing as much as you fill the grave, you may consider this.

300px-PhantomofChaos-BP01-EN-C-1E.png

Phantom of Chaos

Hard to believe Chaos isnt an actual archetype, huh? Anyway, this card isnt too useful in Chaos decks either, unless you have a BLS or Chaos Sorcerer in the grave and you need to banish something immediately. Best used in Decks built for him, but you can go ahead and test him out if you like.

There are three TCG cards that directly support the Chaos series. Some Chaos support is out in the OCG, but we wont worry about that here.

300px-ChaosZone-SDDC-EN-C-1E.jpg

Chaos Zone

This card gains counters every time you banish something (Or two monsters together, equating still only 1 counter), which can then be used to summon one of those Banished monsters, as long as the Level of that monster is the number of counters you removed. But if it gets destroyed, you can add 1 LIGHT or DARK monster from your deck to your hand, with the same condition though but also including less than. I would recommend not running this card, but based on your build and/or preference it may come in use. At least it can destroy your opponent's field spell when it activates.

300px-ChaosGreedDR2-EN-C-UE.jpg

Chaos Greed

Chaos's own Pot of Greed: As long as you have at least 4 or more cards banished, you get to draw 2 cards, provided your Graveyard is also empty. Depending on your build, that may not be possible, and sometimes isnt for any build due to too many of either LIGHT or DARK monsters to even out with standard Chaos Summons. I don't have a personal opinion on this card other than I have never found it successful.

300px-PrimalSeed-TU07-EN-R-UE.png

Primal Seed

Primal Seed is a nice little support card just for BLS, since CED is forbidden and likely won't be coming back. It simply lets you add 2 banished cards to your hand as long as BLS is on the field. However, it is limited, and with no Magician of Faith, it can be a chore to get it back, so if you plan on running this card, be careful when you use it (But most often its a dead draw).

Several cards were not made necessarily with Chaos in mind but blend together very nicely with Chaos decks.

300px-GoldenHomunculus-DT06-EN-DNPR-DT.j

Golden Homunculus

Pronounced (Home-unk-you'll-us), this beauty gains 300 ATK points for each banished monster, which is a lot more relevant for most Chaos decks than Chaos Sorcerer. It also has the 1500 original attack, so if you only banished 5 cards so far that's a 1 Tribute 3000 ATK beater. Plus he is light, so if he gets sent to the graveyard one way or another, he's LIGHT banish fodder.

300px-SixthSense-LCJW-EN-C-1E.png

Sixth Sense

Not that Sixth Sense isnt good in almost every other deck, but it has a special home in Chaos decks because both of its results can be beneficial. Roll a 6? Great, ill just +6 myself. Roll a 4? Great, ill just mill 4 monsters for banish fodder. Though I can't say rolling a 1 is particularly exiting.

300px-ReturnfromtheDifferentDimension-DP

Return from the Different Dimension

The infamous win card of Dragon Rulers, it can be very useful in a number of situations. Even if you havent banished anything to get over your opponent's monsters, you can use those monsters as Xyz or Synchro material for a monster that can.

300px-OneDayofPeace-PHSW-EN-C-1E.png

One Day of Peace

Remember when I said Chaos decks have a slow early game? This can help protect you for a bit during that period where your Graveyard isnt quite up to scratch yet. Your opponent draws a card too, but they would have drawn it eventually, right?

300px-LylaLightswornSorceress-SDDC-EN-C-

Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress

I dont main Mystical Space Typhoon in my Chaos Deck. Why? Because I have Lyla. She is your MST, temporary defending monster and mill card all in one. Use her effect to destroy an annoying card or potential Mirror Force, switch her to defense mode, then mill 3 in the end phase for banish fodder.

Summon can be negated

LIMITED, formerly FORBIDDEN.

Those aren't drawbacks, you know....

Also it seems rather silly to say Golden Homunculous is ideal for Chaos Decks. Same goes for Day of Peace/Sixth Sense, because people would typically run stuff like that regardless. And as far as off-theme support goes, why didn't you mention Charge of the Light Brigade? I mean, if you are running lucksworn Lightsworn monsters, then why not include their searcher?

The Limited bit is a little bit. The other two I was just making it clear that he has no immunities. I dont know, it could be considered a drawback compared to boss monsters who do have those immunities.

Whether it would be typically run anyways doesnt mean it can't be mentioned. As for Charge, IDK. :P You wont necessarily be running Lightsworn monsters is probably why I didnt. Just as I only mention Lyla here but Ryko may or may not be used. Just a suggestion, and I suppose just mentioning a Lightsworn monster sort of implies looking at the archetype's support wouldnt hurt if you plan on running one.
