Yu-Gi-Oh! Team Awesome is an idea

Recommended Posts

Saving the world is boring, so I'm going for a slice-of-life hobby story that doesn't take itself seriously.

Story and characters and stuff

Yu-Gi-Oh! is not a way of life, and the world built around this game.

It's a game that geeks get together and play and desperately try to act cool on YouTube by throwing Dubstep in their videos while wearing their hat sideways.

It's about Flex Thunder, a square jawed high school player tough guy who gets into Duel Masters because of his socially awkward cousin. After losing his first duel, he refuses to accept the loss, and continues playing to get back at the opponent, but ends up enjoying the game.

In lieu of wizards and heroic knights, Flex uses mostly Fiends, Beast-Warriors, and Dinosaurs to match his macho personality.

The first arc is about him learning the game, and joining Team Awesome to compete in tournaments and whatnot.

Team Awesome has Penny, the brains and female lead. She runs Spellcasters and stuff. She relies on stun and control over Flex's raw aggression.

Haven't made other members yet.

Villian-wise, there is a Kaiba character who uses the generic 3000 Dragon (see below) and wants to bed the female lead.

There's also a Weevil character who uses Insect floaters (imagine a deck with 10+ Hyenas) to make a massive board fast.

There's a Mai character who runs Valkyrie sub-type monsters (see below).

Technical stuff

The card pool will be based around Legend of Blue-Eyes to Invasion of Chaos.

But, one of the big things I'm doing for the story is tossing out 90% of the existing card pool in favor of new cards based loosely on the pre-GX era cards.

Blue-Eyes? Now, he's Shining Punisher.

Dark Magician? Now, he's Darkdevoted Monk.

Red-Eyes? Now, he's Reckless Destroyer, Crimson Blazer.

Oh, and Summoned Skull is now a football player called Berserk Tackler, Super Bruiser, and is Flex's main card.

Basic Insect? Darkroach Commando.

Harpies? Valkyries, and are now LIGHT Fairies based on Norse mythology.

Toons? Anime.

I was originally going to just give the existing vanilla effects, but I don't like the existing monsters, so I replaced them to give the story a more unique identity. Though, the ATK/DEF values of the new cards match their original counterparts.

Speaking of vanillas, they don't exist in this continuity, mainly because they're boring and easily replaceable.

The game's Egyptian origins are removed, and the game (regarding the cards I've made so far) features a mish-mash of Greek, Norse, and Japanese mythology.

Exodia and the God cards don't exist.

The characters (save for two) won't use [archetype x] decks because archetype duels are boring to read and twice as boring for me to write.

The few archetypes are now subtypes so monsters don't the boring "[archetype] Bob" and "Super [archetype] Larry."

Instead of archetypes, monster support their Type or Attribute like Psychics, but at the same time are made to stand alone, some being staples.

The gimmicky stuff like Duel Disks are non-existent, and the Duel Boxes from the manga are the farthest gimmick technology goes.
