Card Contests Judge Exam (UPDATED 2/09/14)

Aix

Recommended Posts

In order to make sure all contest judges and hosts know what they are doing, you must now pass the Judge Exam to be allowed to judge or host a contest. It's an easy test. Quite simply, you judge the following cards in a mock contest (say whether they are broken or badly designed, and make a decision on which card is better), and give the reasoning behind your verdict in a PM to .Saber. Including a rubric is optional, but using a rubric does not mean you opt out of having to give actual written reasoning. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask below.

The practicalities of this will be fairly simple. Every 6 weeks, 2 new cards will be posted for exam entrants to judge based on card design. If you pass this test, you will be eligible to judge until the next 2 cards are posted. Then, everyone who passed previous exams will have to pass this exam as well to renew their judging eligibility. However, anyone who passes the exam 3 times will not have to retake the exam a fourth time and will be listed under "permanent judges". This will save time for those who have proved they are competent enough to judge contests on multiple occasions. I will keep a tally of how many times each member has passed the exam next to their username, as well as whether their time as a judge has expired or not. Also, its not totally useless to take the exam when its about to change to new cards, since it will add to your tally.

If any accepted judge expires in the middle of hosting/judging a contest, they will have to pass this exam again before they are allowed to judge and score the cards in the contest they are hosting/judging. However, if said host/judge doesn't pass the new exam within 2 weeks of it being posted, then the contest will have to be locked and aborted (refunds will be given by the host and if not a mod).

Card Requirement: Make a Level 6 WATER Monster.

Next Exam: 10/14/2014

Remember that you must talk about Card Design when judging these cards. Read the Guide to Making Cards in the RC section for help on Card Design.

[Spoiler Skeletal Cetos]

1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner WATER monsters

When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can discard 1 monster and target 1 monster in your Graveyard that was used as a Synchro Material for the Synchro Summon of this card; add that target to your hand. If your opponent controls more monsters than you, this card cannot be destroyed by battle.

In all due respect what is the point of this??  Why are we making more restrictions and pointless rules to limit what people post here?  There is already a lack of activity why cut member's freedom?  Tell me if i'm wrong but I see no overload of spam.  Are mods just too lazy to spot bad contests and close them?  I don't believe an 'exam' is needed to split the members of YCM, i'd rather it be equal rather than pointless rules that make some better than others.

Because all too often we've had a contest start up and its all fine and dandy with people joining and decent pots and then the end of it comes and... The contest host either doesn't give any reasoning or makes a ridiculously flawed decision because they dont know how to judge properly. Will this limit the number of contests we have? Yes absolutely, but the point is it is polarizing out the contests run by poor judges, so we have more enjoyable contests where the participants actually get to see what they did wrong as opposed to looking at a little number that might be subjective.

I see your point but I still believe in freedom, last time I recalled this forum was open to all members?  There shouldn't be exams needed to judge a simple card contest.  So what if the judging may be flawed?  It is their contest that you have the choice of joining.  I'm finding this a little bit ridiculous that all members need permission to post contests?

You're right that their shouldnt be, but its been shown very clearly that there has to be. Whether people have the freedom to join a contest or not is irrelevant if they arent getting anything back from the contest, that being, useful comments on their card design abilities.

If we didn't have as many issues with poor judging as we have in the past then there would be no need for this exam, which isnt that hard if you're halfway intelligent. But we can't harbor a community that critiques cards worse than it makes them.

If you noticed, there was a heavy discussion about the quality of posts here in the CC section; started by Toyo, then furthered by Black and Aix.

I agree that we shouldn't have restrictions, but this is for the benefit of members entering, so they know that their cards will be judged fairly and if their cards don't place, they at least know what's wrong with their card and how can they fix it.

Yes, it will limit the amount of contests here (especially considering that this isn't like the old days of YCM), but tying into what was mentioned earlier, the quality of contest hosts needs to be at a level satisfactory for this section. I've seen a few contests with the hosts simply choosing a card of an unknown reason (or for another reason, they didn't like being questioned about why a "Fake Type" card won over some other cards that were of RC-level quality [realistic stats, effects and so on]); this must not happen again. We wouldn't have this test if some of the newer members simply learned to grade/host properly.

EDIT: If you all wish to know what contest I'm referring to in the 2nd example of bad hosts, it's over here.

  • 2 weeks later...

Can someone save me from embarrassment?

I posted a detailed review of two anonymous cards in the Gadjiltron vs Aqua Hina 1 vs 1 thread. They were the most detailed reviews I've ever done, and I would like someone who passed the judge test to have a quick look, and tell me if I have a chance of completing this test.

Thanks.

Judging from the review on both cards, you should be fine.

All you have to do is judge the cards Aix left in main post in a mock 1v1 contest and simply explain why you think card A is better than B or vice versa.

That's what this whole test is for anyway; can you validate your reasons for voting for a certain card. This came around because there have been some contests that just picked winners based on unknown criteria [I linked a particular one].

Since it doesn't say in the opening post, how will I know if I failed? Since presumably my name will appear in the list if I passed. (If your very busy Aix, please don't take this as me pestering you for an answer. Please wait and respond when your ready.)

Sorry haven't checked back to this for a while.

Aix will edit this when he gets time.

I should ask him if he can update it on a weekly basis or something [or since Striker, myself and Saber mod this section; we can administer this test ourselves].

So Aix isn't the sole judge?

Oh well. I PM'd a review in hope of being allowed to make contests as a judge... 8 days ago...

At the moment, Aix is the one you should be sending your stuff to.

Like I mentioned, I should ask if he can update this periodically or just have Saber/Striker/myself help in the judging; since we are in charge of this section effective 7/12/2014 (or 7/16/2014 for Striker). Or just send us a list of people who passed and we'll do it.

And I added you to the list... almost 8 days ago...

Currently in the process of making new cards for this. Will purposefully make badly designed cards this time. If anyone has ideas, PM me.

Should we refresh the list each time the test is remade?
