Rise of the Wolf Lords (25/?)

Recommended Posts

Wolf cards are something I have seen lots of during my annual visit to the forums and most have all been pretty similar. This is my take and hopefully bring a new view on the over used ideas that have popped up.

The set is designed to become stronger when the Wolves work together, each card supporting the others and overcoming small attack values to win.

Edit: Were Monsters have now been added along with the field spell too support them.
(First draft of these, expect changes as fixes/rates/comments come in)
According to history books, Teal was created by the gods to become a haven for all life that they gave breath to and life flourished on the rolling green of the land. Humans erected great cities of stone and steel and flourished within their golden walls. But peace did not last. A powerful wizard known as Zembiran rose up with dark magic and began to cover the world in shadow. He marched from city to city, leaving only destruction, fire and death in his wake. His magic stretched across al realms, enslaving creatures of all sizes to his cause, creating a army big enough to reshape Teal into a land of his hatred and malice.
But life did not surrender easily.

Aklest, the leader of free men gathered all free men to Hundol, the largest city of Teal and from there led the last defence against the evil wizard and his army of shadow. The battle lasted years and millions of living beings lost their lives until Akelst met Zembiran in single combat and cut him down amongst the bloodied field of battle. But darkness does not falter easily; With his last breath Zembiran unleashed a spell that tore the souls of every surviving body on either side and scattered them across Teal and achieving his ultimate goal of destruction.

Thousands of years passed and life began to seep back into Teal once more. Scientists and Mechanics created ways to focus the still roaming souls into vassals known as Duel Monster cards creating groups calling themselves 'Founders' individuals dedicated to seeking out these souls and creating the worlds most powerful cards to become the greatest duellist in the world and earn the King of Games title.

These are those cards, these are the cursed souls of Teal.

Rae Amara is a rash seventeen year old girl who grew up in the shadow of her older brother Ranst and his skills as a duellist. She was born into a affinity to Wolf souls and her instincts seemed to be tuned to seeking the wolf souls scattered across Teal. Rae is constantly trying to prove her own worth and often this pushes her into situations where she cares only for proving herself to the other duellists.

Her deck is that of the Wolf cards she has found or inherited. Her main card, the first she ever managed to seek, is the Wolf, Chesi who is also the spirit that accompanies her when in the field. Rae's style is that of herself, moves and combos with the cards are seen as rash to others but in fact are well thought out and she always has a plan.

Rae and her Wolves are about to be thrown into a storm of darkness, one that threatens the very fabric of existence.

Dragons have always played a part in the mythic origins of Duel Monsters and within Teal, it is no different. Ancient spirits merged with Soulless cards, taking the form of Dragons to continue the battle of light versus shadow. In this way Gods became legend...

Too many similaratiesto fire fist. kinda seems unoriginal

In what way are there similarities to Fire Fist? Correct me if I'm mistaken but FF monsters don't reveal from the hand and they can't attack directly due to a effect, which is everything this archetype uses. So the only thing left is the fact that they're the Fire monsters?
I'd appreciate it if you could expand on your comment and explain your trail of thought regarding what is similar between the two.

Megaz0rd, please abide by the Advanced Clause.

If you're going to comment on someone's cards, you must explain your thought process; NOT just say that they resemble Fire Fists. In what way is that so?

Given from what I'm saying, the monsters here tend to be on the lower end of the stat spectrum with respect to other monsters of equivalent Level. Granted, a lot of them reveal cards for a power up and get to attack directly if you have another Wolf on the field (and/or offer other useful effects), so I suppose it balances out to an extent. The Main Deck monsters are Level 3, so you could, in theory, use Gravity Bind + some other stall cards to allow them direct attacks without fear (though the introduction of Xyz pretty much weakens this combination).

Elder, like the rest of Main Deck, has quite low stats for a Level 5 monster. At 1100/500, it won't last long on its own [and essentially requires the smaller wolves to support it].

Essentially it allows you to SS a copy of a monster from the graveyard if you have it in graveyard first.

As a whole, you can afford to buff their stats by 300 or so each and not worry about if they've become broken or not.

Well ain't you a sight for sore eyes! Haven't seen you around here in a LONG time! ^^

Back on the topic of the set...

I'm looking at the backstory first, to get the feel for the set, and to be honest I'm a bit impressed. Don't really hear about the souls of said place residing in the cards (unless we're talking something like normal Duel Spirits or even the Legendary Dragons). All in all, it is good!

Now I'm seeing a very consistent Level cap you have, mainly all your monsters being Level 3 (save your Synchro). This not a bad choice, though most archetypes deal with a balanced level of 3s, 4s, and so forth. If you want to utilize the monsters fully (as well as standing a chance against higher attack monsters), you may want to think about adding various levels into the mix.

Not only that, but Sakura did mention the use of Xyzs (though it was said it would weaken the combination mentioned in that post). However, with your multiple Level 3s...this would bring out many Rank 3s (namely Zenmanies? <- Spelling). Perhaps, you could find a way to allow Xyzs to play a part within the set to help the monsters, so the combinations will work more.

Thanks for the input people, appreciate it lotsly!

@Sakura - Boosting the stats is something I am leaning towards more and more each time I look at the set. Originally, the effects to reveal cards was once per turn on each Wolf, so having two or three on the field and being able to reveal the same one for each to get some major buffs with Alik and Chesi: revealing Alik to grab Chesi and then revealing her to SS and then with her effect revealing another Alik... and it went on. But now that this has been toned down, an increase in stats could work wonders.

The whole deck is designed to work very closely together and it would be a very punishing deck to play if you didn't know exactly what you needed to play and when; The exact kind of deck I love! (I topped several tournaments with a Kuriboh deck just like this)

@Sonic - Haha, yes! I've been away for two years as my love for the game faded but now I'm designing my own LCG and am using this as a way to get the creative juices flowing. Glad you remember me, must have made a impression :D

It took me a while to come up with the right story for them. I'm drafting a Fanfic based on that story, so everything I do on the forums now is all going to be tied together.

The level cap I'm drawing is at 3 for the base Monsters. I feel that the game is dominated and controlled by higher level Monsters and I want to show a different perspective with my cards. I'll have a few tweaks and maybe lower the levels of some cards, but raising them makes me sad lol.

As for Xyz Monsters; they are coming. I have a few ideas floating around but trying to fit them into correct Ocg is proving more troublesome than I thought, but they are coming and they will make the set mould together more.  But this is only the beginning, I have plans for a set expansion to include werewolf versions of the cards as well as fusions with other sets I'm working on (Another re-master of a older set I made and several new ones)

Heh, yep...you and your last wolf set definitely did ^^

And I can definitely understand why you would want a different perspective with levels, especially in this game. And the Xyzs will definitely help in the long run, so can't wait to see what you bring up with those.

Now for that set expansion with werewolves and Fusions, I'm definitely awaiting that. Since I'm a HERO user, the Fusion element will be an interesting feature to bring in ^^ Really hoping to see this excel!!

 • 2 weeks later...

After a short beak due to getting married and spending our Honeymoon watching Game of Thrones, I'm back and have added a new Monster, Wolf Dragon of Legend. As the short piece of text explains, even in Teal Dragons were part of the mythology of Duel Monsters and this monster is a way of bringing that into my sets. Expect Xyz next as well as several other sets (Gargant, Demon, Virtue to name a few)

Hey, I love the cards, and I'd like to program them for YGOPro\DevPro! You'll still have rights on them, of course. Although take in mind that I'm working on 2 other programs now so it'll take some time.
Tell me if yes or if no. Thanks
Roeyba

Also know that these would be hard to program, just give me time to think...

Sure you can use them. Would love too see these come alive :D

Updated cards: The set now contains the ability for the Wolves to tap into there more primal nature in the form of Were versions. Not sure if the Were monsters should support other like themseleves (As they are at the moment) or if they should just give better effects to the smaller wolves once they are revealed.

Thanks Chaos, I wanted them to be useful, work with the cards already there but also feel different and I think I managed to balance it quite well.

My first ever Xyz Monster has been added to the Monster list! Wasn't too sure of the effect so I'm very open to feedback!

And I've fixed the double card issue! Thanks for pointing it out.

Well, an end game spell, that's new for me to see. Its an impressive concept to say the least on that ^^ Though, it seems almost like it could be used to Xyz and Synchro...if you were able to. Though it REEEEEAAAALLY is a big risk with that ending...not sure about it, in my opinion.

As for the Bond, seems like this would be useful for both, and from my experiences, use it for one effect once and after its gone, search it again from deck or grave by another card and use it for the next effect.

I wanted a all or nothing card to go into the set and having the 'pack' attack as one out of desperation suited. I may edit it and add a reveal effect onto it, but have to think of one first :/

I understand.

So in short, its a sort of "We're cornered...don't back down, die trying" type concept. We honestly don't really have too many All or Nothing type cards, so it is an interesting idea to say the least.
