Question.

Ash-Greninja. Too much for OU? Just barely okay? Or just right for OU?

IMO it is barely okay. It gives up Protean and coverage, and has to defeat a Pokemon to gain the boost so you got to make some move sacrifices and play a bit more strategically with it.

Then gain, I don't play OU, although I watch replays in Showdown regularly, so take my opinion as a grain of salt.

Haha not yet, but I'm working towards it. So far its only on Showdown, still training my mons ingame. The moves aren't final by any means, but I was wanting to make a weather changing team with Drifblim and Castform. Castform will be a key player with its weather-changing powers, and Drifblim will help it from the sky. I call it my Weather Balloon team! I like to imagine Castform sitting in Drifblim's cloud 'hair' to fly along.

So, I've been battling with Yui on Showdown a bit. I used to do competitive battling back when like... Gen 4 and 5 were still things, but even then I wasn't too good. Needless to say, I fuckin' suck now since everything's changed so much lol. Yui told me to join this place for advice and.... experience, I guess? Either way, it's also an opportunity for me to get more active on this site, so it's good overall.

Welcome to the somehow not dead but still slow club where I don't know what to do with it anymore :D

I'm the best at this.

But no really if you wanna discuss anything about it, or ask advice about whatever, feel free.

And welcome!

Castform deserves an evolution with an updated Ability and a better Weather Ball, IMO. If Forecast were to change under other conditions like the Terrains, fog, and, you know, Sandstorm, it could become interesting. I find sad that they didn't elaborate on its weather-changing gimmick.

I think castform could be so much more but it just isn’t, I think gen 6 was the time to fix it and they didn’t, and if they do make it well, maybe something like this (I might have posted this before):

Mega Castform/Wethercaste

Normal

Ability: Weathercast- Summons weather/terrain based on the first moveslot, no weather is summoned if it is any type but Ice, Fire, Water, Grass, Fairy, Psychic, Electric, or Rock and changes form based on that weather.

HP: 70>70

ATK: 70>70

DEF: 70>80

SPATK: 70>120

SPDEF: 70>80

SPE: 70>100

As a side note, what do we think the next gimmick for Gen 8 will be, seeing as how this Gen on the 3DS is over as far as getting new games is concerned, more Mega Evolutions or something new like...?

I wouldn't make a Mega form for Castform. It would take the Mega slot when it could get an evolution instead with the same +100 BSTs, if not more.

As for any new gimmick, I would prefer for them to take a break from new ideas and let them sink in a little more while expanding the current gimmicks in other areas. For example, I would like to see Hoenn forms of Pokemon, and non-Kanto Pokemon get region forms as well.

I wanna see a game where we have both Trials and Gyms. Like for example, you have to beat the gyms so u can take on the Elite Four and become champion, but you have to also beat the trials to gain Z-Crystals and also grow closer to your pokemon. I'm kinda imagining trials as like a mini side quest for future pokemon games. They can be 100% optional, but they are there to provide an extra challenge for you, and reward you for completing them. I still want the gyms to be the main focus of the games tho. Like, the gyms are how you earn new Poke Rides (down with HMs forever), make pokemon of certain levels obey you, advance thru the story and everything.

Yea, I have given this a loooooot of thought.

With the Switch marking the end of handhelds for Nintendo (for now anyway), Gen 8 will be the first full generation to be released for console unless Nintendo just really wants people to buy a 3DS (probably a New 3DS), as well as the first console game period since Colosseum and XD. With that in mind, what we get next gen on the assumption that it's a Switch gen is really only limited by Nintendo's imagination. We might be able to fully explore every region so far, for example. I'd personally like a weather region, but that probably won't happen (weather is apparently too powerful a mechanic to base an entire gen around). We could even get the improved Castform mentioned above in that scenario!

Actually, new gimmicks that IMO could get funny are stuff like 6 vs. 6 battles, or Free-for-All battles where your own team members battle each other and you would have to fulfill certain challenges or conditions to make things interesting rather than just decimating  everything; it would be some sort of strategy game, rather than a fighting one. For instance, defeat 3 Pokemon with a move that damages all Pokemon, or stuff involving the additional effects of the Pledges, IDK.

3 vs. 3 player battles (not 3 vs. 3 Pokemon, nor Double Battles) could become something, too. Will you fight both opponents equally? or temporarily cooperate with an opponent to fight a common threat? Of course, doubt they would be ever competitive, but could be funny modes to play.

What format will you use this team in? That will determine how you can improve their sets.

Thanks lol. I guess the first thing I want to ask is how to build a good team. I know it's a pretty broad question that'll probably require a long answer, but yeah. I know bits and pieces about having like, a three Pokemon core that cover each others weaknesses, but that's about it. I've mostly played in OU, but my teams have usually had a mix of OU and UU Pokemon. I don't think that should be much of a problem, though, since I remember one time a few years ago where this one guy won an OU championship with a damn Pachirisu lol.

Advice for making your own EV spreads and sets would be nice, too.

VGC is a weird place where tiers are thrown out the window lol

As for general team making...focus on a win-con or two and work from there. Like, a couple Mons who are your main ways of winning, and then pick Mons to compliment them.

When you get more specific you want to look at major/common threats. Ash-Greninja, Landorus, etc. If your team loses to one of them then you need to figure out a way to check or beat them.

I'm bad with EV spreads honestly. However when going bulky attacker usually it's HP plus whatever attack, defensive usually you focus on one side, though Mons with super high Defense could do well with SpDef, like iirc Steelix in its tier would be SpeDef to take hits from both sides.

Usually you focus on two things depending what you need.

It's usually either

Attack/Special Attack and Speed

Attack/Special Attack and HP

Defense/Special Defense and HP

HP and Speed

Also with fast attackers usually you want to have a +Speed Nature.

This month's OMotM is a bit of a Doozy. It's called Shared Power. The gist is that all of your Pokemon get all of the abilities of everything in your Party (Barring a few that are banned from sharing), which can lead to some crazy combinations.

Someone posted this replay on another forum I'm in.

Of course, Weak Armor has since been banned from sharing, but the replay itself is still brilliant.

It's an extreme metagame. Personally I don't find appealing these kind of overwhelming formats. Heck, I am not interested even in playing Ubers.

Speaking of OMs, this one caught my attention:

Inheritance

Basically, a Pokemon gains the movepool and Abilities of any other Pokemon, except those banned in the metagame, but lose access to their own abilities and moves.

A common pick I saw was Alolan Golem'd Tapu Koko as a lead, setting rocks and delivering Galvanized Explosions. IIRC Tapu Lele'd Mega Alakazam can be scary too. IDK if I would play this either because I would have to do some research on effective combinations, but it's fun to watch.

I'm bumping this, since it got no discussion.

To be fair this is more for Showdown than the games >.>

That was last month's OMotM. I got to 1300-something rating using this team.

[spoiler=Inheritance Sun team]Nihilego @ Heat Rock

Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb

- Solar Beam

Inherits from Torkoal. Primary sun-setter. I originally used Roserade with Shell Smash instead of Earth Power, but the Shell Smash got banned, so I switched to using Blacephalon until it got banned, before settling on this.

Landorus-Therian @ Focus Sash

Ability: Simple
EVs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Growth
- Flame Charge
- Rock Slide

Inherits from Numel. I theorymonned this set on the thread you linked to, someone pointed out the possibility of giving Sun Support, and that is how this team came to exist. Really powerful wallbreaker being able to set up to +4 Atk in 1 turn in the Sun. If you don't have Unaware, this will wreck you.

Heatran @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flash Cannon
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Focus Blast

Inherits from Hydreigon. I just needed something that wasn't entirely reliant on the Sun for the team, so here you go.

Charizard-Mega-Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Solar Beam
- Roost
- Flamethrower

Inherits from Volcarona. Secondary sun-setter.

Buzzwole @ Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Jump Kick
- Megahorn
- Horn Leech
- Swords Dance

Inherits from Sawsbuck. One of my 2 Chlorophyll sweepers. This role was originally filled by Kartana before it got banned.

Garchomp @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Hammer
- Defog
- Leaf Blade

Inherits from Tropius. My other Chlorophyll Sweeper. I originally used Hoopa-U inheriting from Shiftry as my second Chlorophyll sweeper, but it was banned at the same time as Kartana, which made me quit the tier for the rest of the time it was OMotM in March 2017.
