I usually show em That album or Some NWA.

i dont think that NWA would work nearly as well as Kendrick Lamar or Death Grips though ive known a few people who dont like Hip-Hop but dont mind a bit of NWA.

Tbh even though SOC is flat out amazing, there are some quite flawed tracks on that album. If It Ain't Ruff and Something 2 Dance 2 make me facepalm for everytime Dopeman and Gangsta Gangsta got me saying "HELL YEAH!" Illmatic, The Blueprint (Takeover has won me over more new Hip Hop fans than I can count), and TPAB would be my introductions. For stuff that isn't super common, my go tos would be:

Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded

Busta Rhymes - The Coming

Common - Ressurction, Be

Big Pun - Capital Punishment

KRS-One - The Return of Boom Bap

The Roots - Things Fall Apart

I can get into a few more modern records, but I am rather strict on these, and the R&B section would be more appropriate for me to discuss on such things rather than Hip Hop, due to its charts being in a rather decline of recent.

People always get mad at me when I say I feel Takeover was superior to Ether.

Even as a huge Nas fan, I gotta say Takeover was way better. It was said in an interview before that Nas had a better version over a Swiss Beatz beat and dammit I believe this by how letdown I feel by it. Ether is good, but it kinda also makes me like "Dammit, Nas, you really left yourself off guard here". You don't challenge Jay Z with a track with that amount of gay jokes and the inability to back up your statements as facts.

That and Jay-Z had Kanye supplying the beat, which is kind of cheating because Kanye is a production prodigy.

Swiss was hot sheet at the time though IIRC, it should have been a fair fight, but then Nas took that wack sheet. As a producer in both Hip Hop and Electronic music, there are so many better things Ron Browz could have done to improve it. Arrangement, variety, having the beat support Nas's flow, any of that.

Agreed. This ain't me dissin Nas neither. I just feel Jay-Z won that round. Their good friends now, so I suppose it doesn't matter.

Ether is the greatest diss track in history!

When a given rapper absolutely annihilates their opponent with bars, they are said to have "ethered" their opponent for a reason!

Nas didn't challenge Jay-Z, he responded!

Jay-Z, an upstart at the time who was bitter after having been rejected features on every last one of Nas' classics (of course!), tried to step up to Nas and resolve his insecurities by posturing over some wack Doors samples and got curb stomped!

Now that that's settled, we can move on!

Rakim is dope!

Whatever I'll pop in here and drop a link once in a while why not. These topics end up pretty dead most of the time tho. Have one of my favorite Nas songs. Disputed time of recording, was presumed as a demo tape track but nowadays the consensus is that it was scrapped from IWW I think? Whatever, doesn't matter.

Here's the deal, if you're trying to get someone into hip-hop and they haven't listened to anything you gotta kinda try a lot of diverse sheet and judge their reaction. Like, if I were to do it rn I'd give the person like 10 songs from different artists who go about their sheet different. Someone might respond better to great lyricism, someone to banging beats, someone to impeccable flows, etc. Although, for what it's worth, if you're introducing someone to hip hop you might need to understand that they might not be ready to listen to complex wordplay and sheet so go for sheet that's sonically pleasing first and foremost.

Dude foh with that sheet. I'mma preface this by saying I'm biased towards my boy Nas but Hov is top 5 doa as well, and honestly that beef was very close. Here's where I rant tho. The reason people still going round talking bout kids ethering each other is because Ether is an entirely different deal from Takeover. Ether is direct, aggressive. Like No Vaseline or Hit Em Up. Nas just goin at Jigga, straight up. Like sheet the base sample for Ether's beat is Pac saying "funk Jay Z" - where do you go from that? That sheet wasn't for radio play. Like don't get me wrong I'm saying this was an even ass beef, even ass diss tracks - so to say Nas' sheet was wack? honestly man...

but yeah funk enough bout that sheet. they settled that sheet, we got good tracks out of the entire ordeal, it was even sheet. move on to fresher topics.

New Mac Miller was dope. New Jay Rock took some time to grow on me but sheet's dope. I'm not a big Future guy but WATTBA had some lit tracks. Also Cudder crashing and burning, sad. Opinions?

I was having this exact discussion with a friend today. I'm fairly sure Ether's in the top diss tracks ever. Takeover's there too, but I'd put it below Ether quite easily. Basically what Madsen said about the track. Is it bad that I think Back to Back is one the best diss tracks ever? I'm not a huge Drake fan, but I thought he absolutely killed there.

Also, this. Is. My. Jam.

YES. That sheet grew on me super fast, didn't click at first but like anything Erykah I've grown to like it. Just waiting for her to get freaky with Drizzy and have weird ass kids and make him dress weird n sheet and then make some crazy ass music.

FWIW B2B was pretty good and Drake absolutely killed it but it's not really even close to being one of the best diss tracks of all time. My personal pick will always be Cube's No Vaseline. He clearly and concisely picks apart all of NWA in ~4 minutes. The beat bangs and you can straight up tell how much he did in the group and that he was essentially the greatest rapper late 80s to 92-ish. The bars are super memorable and hard hitting. So yeah I'd say that's the greatest diss track of all time.

Pac's Hit Em Up is 2nd imo, simply because it's legitimately scary. Like, sheet, I sank when I heard the 'my .44 make sure all yo kids dont grow' line. sheet is funking hard. Ether probably comes in around here, simply on influence (Nas had lyrically better disses but I'mma get to that in a bit). Then I'd say Game's 300 bars (15 minute songs of him going over classic beats ripping apart the entirety of GUnit? Yes please.) and Hov's Takeover. Another one that I consider a personal favorite is DJ Quik - Dollaz and Sense ("Givin your set a bad name with your misspelled name; E-I-H-T now should I continue; yeah you left out the G cuz the G ain't in you" Quik performed this live like a couple of feet from MC Eiht. God, so badass.) Other mentions, uh, Eazy E - Real Muthaphuckin G's, Boogie Down Productions - The Bridge is Over (really the first step when talking about diss tracks. this is the og), Canibus - 2nd Round KO (although people don't talk about Canibus anymore since he's kind of an embarrassment since the whole uh, notepad thing), and uhh, to round it out, since I mentioned it, Nas - Destroy and Rebuild. That's my favorites or some sheet, I don't know. But in short there's been lots of beef in hip hop so lots of great tracks.

i legitimately think rodeo's up there, maybe top ten albums this year.

You can tell it's a good year when you can actually even argue AGAINST this being the case. 2015 you mothafucka, so stacked. And it's not even just hiphop. Seriously though, just off the top of my head, Sremmlife, IYRTITL, Documentary 2, Tetsuo and Youth, B4DA$$, TPAB, I Don't Like sheet, Mr Wonderful, Ludacris, that Death Grips record from early on into the year (cant recall the name asdags), Summertime, Rodeo, Barter 6, Cherry Bomb, Bush, ALLA, Dreams Worth More Than Money, FWA, Compton, 90059, Good:AM, Dirty Sprite 2, Wave, Touchdown 2 Cause Hell, DSP. With plenty more to come in the next couple months including a Dilla project (!!!). Italicized the ones I think can actually contend for top 10. And yeah I put the Game record from the other day up there sue me

Really tho I never listened to much Vince but Summertime '06 is crazy.

Hip-hop beefs are (for the most part) super entertaining.  I think that's a good thing for the industry.  Artists are provoking each other to come out with responses, and to better their music for their own lane or target audience.  It's powerful bruh.

But I still ain't a Future or Lil Wayne fan.  Sorry cuz.  lmao

Just discovered Siimba Lives Long via TeamBackPack.  They constantly introducing me to fire new artists, and Passionate MC and Flawless just dropped a dope track too.  Plus they are consistent on funking amazing cyphers.  Love TBP for the amount of exposure I have to so many different artists.  For example, Locksmith:
