Let's make this happen: Duel Monsters: X-Revolution

Intro:

Hello everyone, my name is Edward and I'm planning a big fanfiction project and I'm a bit confused as where to even start. I haven’t really written much if at all in a few years and while I've been going through countless writing guides over the internet I've found it very hard to put pen to paper (or rather finger to keyboard). I’ve done several idea dumps for what I want to write but I need help to actualise it, get feedback early on and produce something worthwhile. Without further ado let’s get into the meat of what I have planned and brace yourself it’s going to be long:

The working title I have for this project is Duel Monsters: X-Revolution and it’s an AU OC pseudo crossover between Yu-Gi-Oh, Chaotic and Digimon. The story will centre on a Duel Monsters MMO similar in nature to Chatoic where our protagonists will be able to duel just like in the anime. Sinister machinations will be afoot when the new X archetype is released. The protagonists must then travel to the various duel monster worlds to undo the damage caused by the X monsters and save all of their worlds from a sinister presence manipulating events from behind the scenes.

The Cards:

The X monsters are based on X-Digimon as there are redesigns of old cards. These monsters are mutated survivors of the central program’s attempt to purge the duel monsters world and in terms of aesthetic design will look similar to X-Digimon when compared to the original. In terms of game-play this archetype is designed to be extremely flexible. It will be designed to function in a similar way to the classic series in that you can through any old assortment of monsters together to make a working deck. You could for example play X Dinosaur, X fire, X control or you could use them as tech cards in other decks and archetypes, the possibilities are truly endless.

Some cards will be similar in terms of stats but some will be vastly different; Dark prisoner is level 3 originally but Dark Prisoner X is level 10. All X monsters have an effect that treats them as having the name of their original card so you can’t for example run 3 copies of Dark Magician and Dark Magician X in the same deck. Many of these cards will have atypical attack and defences such as 2510 or 2730 to reflect their corrupted nature in their stat line. The Archetype will have tons of support cards including but not limited to:
1. Equip spells based some of the first in the game such as a revamped Sword of Dark Destruction
2. Field spells based on the originals such as Umi or Yami
3. A Generic Equip spell that gives the monster attack, defence and effects based on its Level/Rank (which will also be a plot related card)
4. A generic treasure card
5. An all-purpose counter trap card
6. Generic Fusion card
7. Rank Up Magic Spell Card
8. Generic Ritual Card

There are more but that gives you the jest of it. I'm also considering having a sub archetype of original monsters that are treated as being X monsters, similar to how there are Digimon that naturally carry the X-antibody without having an original form.

There will also be a sub-archetype of McGuffin cards that I truly want to be powerful (like Number C1000 Numerronius powerful) that will factor into the plot and of course the final villain will use a deck that can utilise all of them.  They’ll be based on the attributes in capsule monsters I.e. Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, Light, Dark, Wood and Thunder. The exact number might vary but this was just a starting point. In addition to the X monsters I wanted to design new support for old archetypes that would get them a more or less equal footing in today’s Metagame. I've read the card design guides but I'm still unsure of what to do or where to begin giving archetypes what they need to be good again.

The Plot:

Even though I don’t have all the pieces just yet I have a rough idea of what I want to do. For the first arc I wanted to explore this game world and the culture, establish the main characters and their group dynamic and all that fun stuff. When all that’s done a tournament will be announced where the winner will take part in an exhibition match against one of the mysterious Deck Masters showcasing X cards before they are released into the general public. After this duel really crazy sheet will happen and it’s up to our protagonists to save the duel monsters worlds and their own before the X monsters tear it apart. While the X-monsters are not truly evil some among them have amassed a power base and set out to conquer other Duel Worlds and eventually the human world if not stopped.

An idea that I had was that these Duel Monster Spirits have only just discovered the game and so only a select number of them can duel and of course many of them can instigate shadow games where the looser is sealed into a card.

The Characters:

This is sadly the only area where I have little ideas but I do have some really rough ideas. First and foremost I wanted a diverse cast, if everyone is a Cishet thin able-bodied white man there are problems. I want my work to be a place for everyone to see themselves as the hero (or a cool villain) and discrimination is not welcome. I wanted in terms of the main cast about a 50/50 gender split with about 2 male protags and 2 female protags but I don’t want anyone of these to be ‘the main character’. In the first arc we’ll get to know them, their decks, their playstyles, their group dynamic etc. before sheet hits the fan. Beyond that I wanted some frenemies to appear semi-regularly (think Krystella and Klay only they pretend to be your friends for a while before being massive bastards). The analogues to the Code Masters in this series will be The Deck Masters which will oversee the characters actions and maybe even orchestrate events from behind the scenes to suit their own mysterious ends. Finally there will be the duel monster spirits and warlords they encounter as well as the 1 shot characters they duel with every now and then. As more of the story takes shape I may get more ideas on this front.

The Setting:

In this story there are Duel monster worlds, including the duel terminal world, ocean world, and junk world and so on. Each of these is the virtual creation of an advanced supercomputer that controls the game world (and with time the real world). When the population of these duel worlds becomes too large they are purged and the survivors become X Monsters. After this failed attempt the problem becomes worse and it is up to our heroes to stop it. With the game world I'm unsure whether to have it almost exactly like Chaotic or whether to have that but with more MMO stuff like customizable avatars, guilds and so on. The early adventures will primarily take place in the Duel Castle (the series analogue to Chaotic) and time will be taken to introduce the readers to the culture of this world before all the mayhem starts. In addition to ground duels I’m considering including turbo duels and possibly even action or deckmaster duels if the fancy takes me (but it would have to be renamed Deck Leader Duels to avoid confusion with the Deck Masters). In Chaotic the nature of the world and how people could exist simultaneously in both the real world and Chaotic and perhaps I could explore than if I decided to lean more to that part of the source material rather than a traditional MMO.

Conclusion:

As you can see I've put a lot of thought into this but have had little time to be researching the Metagame again, designed cards, writing and keeping up with university work. It also doesn’t help that I've been recovering from a severe illness (I’d rather not go into detail right now) and I haven’t had the energy or drive to do this until now. I've got all these ideas and I just don’t know where to start so I can make this a reality. Hopefully I can start work on this project soon but absolutely any help from the community would be deeply appreciated, anything form formatting everything like the other long projects to how to write and plan duels and so forth. Perhaps we could strike up a dialogue and share ideas because I'm excited about this and I hope those of you that read all of this are too :)

I wasn't aiming for roleplaying but if people want to suggest characters I'd be more than happy to accept. The thing I was getting at was where do I even start with this and does anyone have any advice? Considering how I'm only just recovering from major health issues tackling something this big could take a lot out of me but I think it will be worth it if I want to start writing. Part of me doubts I can do this but it's worth a try and who knows maybe there could be a roleplaying iteration of it if you're interested?
