With one strike of his hand axe having failed, it seemed that the tide of the battle was not exactly in their favor, with the two knights in front of him seeming to have barley been damaged yet. This was changed by the sudden launch of Sienna's fireball, and though his axe was not magic, the boy still was not going to be outshone. And so, hefting his axe back yet once more, the boy tossed it at an arc over Gunther. This time, the axe had managed find much greater purchase in the knight's armor, actually able to cleave through its shoulder and some of the rotted flesh beneath. While the force of the attack managed to caused the knight to jerk downward, the creature itself did not seem to have any real reaction to the strike. All the same, as the axe returned to him, Alois just said, "alright, kill 'em more dead big man."

As Licorice had called out to Tsetseg to calm herself once more, the girl started to take a deeper breath. With such aberrant beings coming at them, and even worse having to stay near them and treat them as an ally, Tsetseg had found her focus start to waver. And with her focus deteriorating it meant that her sure shot was becoming much, much worse and with it the danger to her friends was getting worse as a result. And so, in order to help herself out, she needed to merely ignore that the dagger throwing ally of hers was even an Awakened in the first place. It was much easier said than done, and the girl still couldn't fully get over it, yet all the same she managed to nock yet another arrow. Looking towards the knight she fired off yet another arrow at it, this was landing with a far more resounding thud as it buried its way past the armor of the knight. Unfortunately, most of the force was absorbed by the armor, and the creature didn't seem that deterred by it, nor the two more daggers that found their way into the awakened's body.

"alright, kill 'em more dead big man."

Gunther nodded, feeling a boost in confidence as Alois's attack landed on the opposing Knight. He gripped his lance and, taking a step forward, thrust the weapon towards the Knight's chest. He managed to pierce the armor, pushing his lance into the undead's body. Unfortunately it seemed to not be deep enough of a wound. While the creature seemed to be barely holding itself up that wasn't nearly enough and the creature, seemingly not caring about the lance in its chest, thrust forward and struck Gunther in one of his already damaged areas of armor, punching through.

Gunther winced and his arm trembled. It hurt...he could feel his blood dripping onto the enemy's lance and, when the Awakened pulled back he could see the tip red with his own blood.

"Licorice!" Penelope called out. "Some may be coming this way soon. Fall back to prepare to guard these openings."

She took a deep breath as she watched the Cavalier chasing down the Pegasus-less Pegasus Knight. Though it looked the woman was quite nimble as she dodged the attack. And delivered a counter attack of her own. She was about to call out to Unil to attack at a distance but the Cavalier had already brought out one of his Javelins and tossed it at the opposing Cavalier, burying the projectile into the Awakened's side. The attack pieced halfway through the enemy Cavalier and had struck with enough force to knock the body off of its horse entirely. It was dead, for the second time, before it landed on the ground.

Penelope found herself relieved that the duo managed to finish off the foe. She realized that she hadn't wanted to have to attack. Stupid. These weren't even living beings, she shouldn't be hesitant...
--
Trim had flung his hand axe in support of Edrick once more though it seemed the foe was tougher than the last as, though Trim's attack cut through like before, the Knight did not fall. Despite this Edrick seemed to have not gotten injured and thus the boy was not in need of healing.

However Dua noticed the other young man, the sword wielder, was quite injured himself. And so he moved near him, standing where the Fox had been previously, and croaked out in halting words. Not time...to die. Let me...help you...keep fight."

There was an odd feeling of concern coming from the undead ally. Though he wouldn't press the young man if he refused to be healed.

Penvo launched her attack directly after Tsetseg and managed to inflict more minor wounds on the Knight. Her mouth moved slightly, as though attempting to grin, and she said in Tsetseg's direction. "See? Not...so...hard." She rasped.

Quatro waited still. The crowd was getting restless, that much she could tell, and she had a feeling they would soon be approaching.

Sienna did nothing. The knight roared and yanked his spear out of the Galtean soldier’s grasp, pulling the end out of his stomach in the process.

Link barely managed to swallow the gasp that followed. His side throbbed painfully, and he could feel the pounding of his heart against his ribcage as blood spilled out of the wound. “Sienna, now!” he said again, fighting to stay on his feet and keep his blade leveled at the Knight. Everything suddenly felt way heavier all of the sudden.

Thankfully, the Protean listened that time. A fireball rocketed over his shoulder and blasted a huge chunk of the Knight’s armor off, scorching most of the upper half of his body and filling the air with the smell of burning flesh. Link took the momentary lapse to fumble in his pockets for a vulnerary, but before he was even able to find one, a sudden wave of warmth swept across his body. The achiness all but went away, the wound stitching itself shut, and his heartbeat slowed considerably.

Healing magic, courtesy of Ciela. Link frowned but said nothing. What kind of Galtean was he? How could he ever let himself depend on the Goddess’ magic to keep going?

Angry at himself for being hit in the first place, Link used his newfound energy to capitalize on the Knight’s weakened armor. “Hiyah!” The Knight blocked the first attack with his rusted shield, but it was too banged up to block the second attack. Link slid beneath his defense and slashed him from shoulder to hip with one clean motion, finally causing the monster to collapse.

Before anyone could celebrate a second Knight took the monster’s place. It attacked and Link managed to turn the spear away with his blade, but the zombie pressed forward and headbutted him.

Link spat a mouthful of blood into his face and shouted, “now, Sie--Sienna?!” She was gone. A wild glance behind him saw that she had moved somewhere beside Gunther, and that one of their undead “allies” had taken her place behind him.

“Not time...to die. Let me...help you...keep fight." it croaked. Judging from the attire, it was a priest.

Link grit his teeth and dug his heels into the ground, pushing back against the Knight with all his might and shoving it away. A Garou didn’t lose… even if that meant compromising his dignity and honor. Still, agreeing with it aloud was too much to ask, so instead he just nodded.

Why had Sienna put him in this position? Her only job had been to throw fire over his shoulder. She had sure seemed happy to light everything up before.

"Ah."

As Adel returned, one of the enemy cavaliers took the initiative to chase her, and just as she pushed Tyltalis away, the enemy lunged at her. The attack was strangely quite telegraphed, and Adel managed to dodge the first strike, and respond with her own. She brought her lance deep into the enemy's steed, and managed to dodge the revenant's following counterattack. Before she was able to finish it off however, one of the living deads that were supposedly on her side finished the enemy off with a javelin. As the enemy dropped dead to the ground, Adel nodded at the allied cavalier in appreciation before getting herself towards her post again. It was then that she remembered about the fliers she saw earlier however. She considered on getting Tsetseg to go over here so she could get into position to snipe them, but it seemed the front area were still too occupied.

Oh well.

Ciela had done her job. That was simple enough. Sienna and Link both dealt with the enemy they were facing, and they were now in a better position. Seeing that one of the ghastly allied priest behind Link now, Ciela nodded to herself, congratulating herself on a job well done before she moved from her position to reach Gunther, He was in a bad situation right now. But, at the very least he was still standing, Ciela cut to the chase and the moment she positioned herself next to Gunther, she immediately casted Mend on him. From a glance, the enemy outside of the area were seemingly endless. Did they even have any chance to win this?

Perhaps it was situations like this that could become someone's drive to embrace a faith.

Shiro didn't want to deal with yet another strike from this knight. He would have to do his best to defeat, although, he was pretty sure with how tanky it wasn't, just one blow wouldn't defeat it.

He threw out a kick, putting all the weight and force he could into it. He did actually hit the knight, much to his surprise, but it still stood firm.

The knight then retaliated, swinging his sword and striking the large frog in front of in. Shiro recoiled from the attack, grunting to himself. He was thankful he was in his frog form, seeing as it was much tankier than his feeble human form. He couldn't imagine how many ways he would have already died if he had to rely on that.

The knight in front of Edrick was momentarily taken off guard by Trim's attack, his own attack against the lancer going wide. However, the others were a little more accurate in their attacks, though for the most part they didn't deal much damage. The knight facing Link was an exception. Though the mercenary did an impressive job of covering it up, he was much frailer than he showed himself to be, especially compared to Gunther or Shiro. Thankfully he was healed right away by Dua, the allied priest.

Licorice, seeing Tsetseg starting to calm down, gave her a "You're doing just fine," and then moved away from the girl to pace behind Link. Though he was healed, if the green-garbed mercenary had to retreat, she would be ready to patch up the hole.

Adelheid was having more luck where she was, having finished off the lone cavalier with the help of her own allied cavalier. However, the noises were enough to draw the rest of the cavaliers on that side, who all galloped down to attack the dismounted knight. The pegasus knights beside them drew closer to the battle, turning slightly to look to where Adelheid was fighting the cavaliers.

Catriona backed to the supply bag, right next to the campfire, to grab another torch, though she didn't light it just yet, moving back to the wall to watch the ensuing fight. This isn't good, she thought. While the lord couldn't see much from her angle, she could see that both cavaliers adjacent to Adelaide managed to hit her. While the attacks themselves weren't much, they would soon add up if the woman wasn't careful.

Shiro wasn't sure why it was taking so long to bring down this one knight, but it was, and it was already wearing down on the frog. Was it being dead boosting its already naturally high bulk? Would he be able to make it fall before it fell him? He had no clue.

Still, he had no choice but to attack. To let up now would just let even more of those dead wander in, and that wasn't something that'd help at all. With his info in mind, he pressed forward. He had to hold the line.

He kicked off, using his leap to propel himself at the knight. The darkness didn't make it easy to aim, however, and he ended up striking the knight in the head with his knee.

The knight took it unflinchingly and grabbed Shiro, slashing him with his sword before tossing him away. Shiro ignored the pain the strike had caused him. He had to hold!

While Alois was expecting the his team's knight to deal a finishing blow to the not so friendly knight, it had seemed his lance arm was not quite up to par with a dead hulking juggernauts. Go figure. As the creature had struck, Alois saw yet another opening to go in and attack. Twirling his hand axe, for a third time, lobbed it overhead Gunther and sent it arcing down towards the Awakened knight. The axe founds its mark, burying itself into the face of the knight, causing the undead hulk to fall backwards and onto the ground, just as lifeless as it had been the day before.

With that done, Alois caught the axe on the return trip, saying, "alright, that's one down and..." he peered into the darkness beyond, not really able to make out anything more than a myriad of red dots for eyes. Sighing, he said, "well, at least it's one down."

While Tsetseg had managed to mostly calm her nerves from shooting the arrow, as the Awakened rogue commented towards her, the girl felt a chill up her spine and more hastily nodded towards the being. Still freaked a bit out by it, she took another deep breath as Licorice tried to reassure as well, taking aim as Shiro had gone in for his croaky assault. As the frog protean had managed to land a solid hit against the head of the knight, caving in  a part of the head, Tsetseg followed up by firing another arrow straight into one of the eye sockets of the Awakened. With the arrow landing true, the knight's head was pushed back yet again and, while it showed no real signs of pain, seemed much slower in recovering from the force of the attacks then it had been before.

Link felt that now shamefully familiar warmth wash over him again, and then his nose slid back into place with a nasty sounding CRACK. He shuddered and gripped his sword tighter. “Thanks,” he said softly, filled with uncertainty as he eyed his opponent. Inera was their enemy, and her cultists had taken the Princess, so why were they using her magic? He couldn’t get his nightmare off his mind, when she had managed to take control of him because he had been healed, and everyone had died as a result.

The Knight stepped forward and jabbed at him. As he had done a thousand times before, Link pushed the doubt from his mind and focused on the battle, swatting the Knight’s spear away.

This one was as slow and sluggish as the monster before him; he was going to pay for that. Link took two steps forward to close the distance between them, then slashed the Knight lightly across the chest. It was a light attack that was only deep enough to irritate the monster. Link was counting on that.

The zombies were prone to throwing their heads back to roar their defiance anytime they took damage, he had noticed, and it was the perfect opening. This one proved to be no different. It started to bellow but as soon as it did, Link pivoted onto the opposite foot, spinning around to sink his blade into the Knight’s fleshy neck.

It was a solid hit. His sword didn’t stop until it hit bone, and the monster finally seemed to falter. Link freed his blade and scanned the battlefield rapidly. His heart was pounding, his blood was boiling, and his senses felt sharper than they had in ages.

I missed this, it suddenly dawned on him. He missed the thrill of battle. The flood of victory that came with each opponent bested, powerful enough to temporarily overshadow the guilt. He missed the companionship that only came from trusting your friends with your very life, and the comfort that came with knowing none of them were going to let you down.

Spirits, what was wrong with him? He missed it all. It haunted his dreams every night, yet he still missed it. “Gunther! How are you holding up?” he said, loud enough to be heard over the commotion. He partly asked out of concern, but mostly, he was just looking for a distraction.

Link never would hear the answer. A wet, gurgling sound caught his ear and he turned just in time to see a spear hurtling toward him. It hit him with what he could only imagine was the force of a stampeding horse, and thank the Spirits his chain held, but he was still completely lifted off the ground and thrown almost five feet backwards.

He rolled to a stop at Licorice’s feet, blinking groggily a few times until the huge black fox came into focus, and groaned.  She looked down at him with a hard to make out expression. Not that he was particularly practiced with reading fox emotions. "Shall I step in?"

He was already climbing back to his feet. “No. Go...go see if Edrick needs help,” he wheezed, and stumbled away to reclaim his spot before any zombies could break their rank.

He couldn’t believe he missed this.

Ciela's healing magic washed over the Knight and he shuddered slightly. It was still an uncomfortable feeling and, had it been anyone but Ciela, he might have pushed them away. But all he had to do was remind himself how harmless, and decidedly NOT Pontic, she was. "Thank you..." He muttered to her, eyeing the Knight in front of him with concern. He couldn't let them get past. If he did....Ciela wouldn't last one moment against them.

Gunther sighed in relief as he saw the axe thrown by Alois bring his foe down. Said relief lasted all of three seconds as another Knight took its place and thrust his lance into the young soldier's shoulder. The force sent him stumbling back and he gritted his teeth as his armor took even more abuse from this fight.

Link asked him if he was alright and Gunther was about to give a, mostly non-verbal, response when he noticed the young man take a serious hit. "No!" Gunther shouted. But he couldn't do anything to help. There was another in the way before that. So he tried to thrust his lance at the Knight that had replaced the last.

Only to go wide and pass by the enemy's side in his haste.

"That could've gone better..."

aonB0Ia.png?3

Penelope's eyes widened as she saw their pegasus-less Pegasus Knight take several attacks. There was a reason she had placed people so they couldn't be swarmed like that! But thankfully the woman knew she had to back away and had asked Unil to move out of the way. "You can still attack from over the wall. Catriona, be ready, if they're coming from this direction they may swarm the other side soon as well."

Unil looked at Adel in concern, and spoke, "Don't...push it." He rasped before spurring his horse forward and at an angle so he could launch another Javelin over the wall at one of the foes on the other side.

Penelope bit her lip. What could she do? Her magic wasn't strong enough to fight these foes....She moved closer to Catriona. "If Quatro gives warning they are approaching from that side I'll join you over there. Those two should be able to hold this line for the time being. Licorice! Closer here, head towards the other opening." Penelope was hoping that the Cavaliers would be too focused on her nearby allies to realize there was another way in close by...but just in case, it was time to get Licorice in on the action.

---

Dua looked one direction, then the other, and realized that there were too many injured for himself alone. He had to hope that girl would reach one of them soon. Add to that the darkness that was encroaching...while he could see fine, the living would have a harder time. He raised up the Torch he had been given and lit it up, providing more light, before clutching his staff and preparing to move to one of the injured.

Trim flung his axe at the opponent once more and was frustrated to notice that the weapon merely grazed the Knight's shoulder before coming back around. He gave the axe a glare as if it was the axe's fault.

Penvo noticed Dua's eyes on her...no, on the strange creature she was fighting with. Yes, he had been quite injured so far. And she was in the way, was that it?

Crouching down, she waited for when the others had launched their attacks and flung one knight at the Knight, hitting it on the side of the helmet and causing the Awakened foe to turn in her direction. As it did she dove, rolling across the ground past Shiro and, popping up, threw another knife into the Awakened's neck. The enemy dropped and a new one took its place. It tried, and failed, to finish off the Protean and Penvo nodded as though that had been her plan the entire time.

And still Quatro waited...wait was that...no, that was a bird. False alarm.

Sienna looked out towards the oncoming horde of dark creatures and shivered, was it even possible that they could survive this? They were only a small group, going up against an army of seemingly unending soldiers. No... No... Now wasn't the time to be having doubts, she had to play her part in this. If there was even a slim chance of winning this, they had to try.

Looking around, she noticed that Link was taking more punishment than he should. The knight he was up against was fairly weakened, but she couldn't take a chance. Sienna switched to her new beaststone. This was a very risky test run, but she had to give it a shot.

Upon switching to the new stone, her flames became visibly fiercer. "Wow... Definitely stronger..." she mumbled as she looked towards the enemy knight. "Take this!" she fired an exceptionally larger fireball that erupted upon hitting the knight, killing it immediately. Seeing the heavily armored creature fall to the ground as a burnt husk filled her some relief, that was one less Awakened to deal with. But just as soon as the knight had died, a lancer had taken it's place and immediately attacked Link. Sienna could only look in horror as the the lance had hit it's mark.

That last hit had broken something important inside his chest. Link struggled to stay steady as he took up his spot beside Gunther again, unable to catch his breath, but he somehow scrounged up the strength to hoist his sword up. “For--For the King…” he tried to shout, but the words came out as a strangled gasp. His chest constricted painfully and the world suddenly tilted.

The Knight responded to his failed battle cry with a terrifying bellow of its own, but it was faint, almost like he was hearing it from underwater.

He couldn’t breathe. Why couldn’t he breathe? His sword was getting heavier with every second that went by, his vision starting to fade, all the while the invisible hand grasping his chest squeezed tighter. His head felt like it was going to explode. Distantly, he realized the Knight was coming toward him to attack, but his arms wouldn’t move when he willed them to.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

His heart pounded in his ear with each lumbering step the Knight took.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Link stubbornly braced for an impact that never came.

“Take this!” A gigantic fireball launched past him and incinerated the Knight from the waist up; Sienna had returned in climactic fashion. He would have thanked her if a Lancer hadn’t immediately surged out of the shadows to take the Knight’s place, stomping on his fallen comrades still smoldering ashes.

Link tried to step forward to meet his latest opponent but he stumbled and fell onto one knee. His face was painfully hot. He struggled to keep breathing. The Lancer closed the distance and stabbed at him. Link tried to block the attack with his blade, but he didn’t have the strength, and his sword was torn from his grip and thrown into the air.

BGM

The spear punched through his chain and into his stomach, emerging from his lower back coated in gore. Link feebly grasped at it and coughed up blood.

Time seemed to slow as he stared up at the Lancer’s rotted mug. A thousand questions buzzed through his head, things he had thought he had more time to address. Would Catriona somehow find out those answers he had never given her? Would they find the gold in his backpack? It wasn’t a lot to royalty, but it would be enough to cover their food and board for a long time. Was Ilia doing well? Was the ranch still going strong? Had they found someone to replace him? It was selfish but he liked to think they hadn’t.

His sword landed a few feet behind him at Sienna’s feet, the end buried into the ground between her paws. Time unfroze.

The Lancer pulled his spear free and Link tumbled forward, facedown, into a pool of blood.

Just because he had resolved not to die tonight did not mean that Edrick was doing anything approaching well. His breath was coming fast and ragged, and at times it seemed like what should have been a second dragged out for days on end while another passed twice as quickly as it should have. He was still terrified, watching what looked to be a legion come to bring about the end of days coming down on them. Were he in a more rational mindset he might well have realised that these were no worse odds than they had faced before, at least in terms of sheer number. But right now? It was all he could do to even keep himself focused on the situation at hand. The lance from the knight in front of him flashed past his head and he hardly even noticed it, not even taking stock of the cut to his ear and the hairs sent falling to the ruined floor beneath his feet. Hoping to find some source of confidence, he looked around in search of the others on the front.

First he caught sight of Gunther and Alois, who seemed to be doing well, and on the other side Shiro at least seemed to be holding. Another look around and he saw the others seemed to be if not well at least surviving. In a fight like this just that was something of a victory. Only as he began turning his gaze back to the front did it occur to him that he had not seen Link, and he looked back to his left in the hopes of finding him.

The Pontic's gaze went wide when he saw the man who was easily their most experienced fighter lying face-down in a pool of his own blood. A hundred thoughts shot through his head, most pressing among them being that if he had more strongly insisted they see to his health they could have saved him. His breathing came even faster as he looked across to the one who did it, an undead lancer by the looks of things. Fast to be sure, but Edrick reckoned himself faster. For one he was not fighting rigor mortis. Of course the realization that he would leave the others unprotected on this side if he broke off to help Link paralyzed him for a moment longer, making it all the harder to act. Eventually, frustration and anger burning through the fear, he turned and let out a wordless cry as he thrust his lance twice into the knight before him. Two fresh holes were left clear through its armor, and though it seemed barely able to stand it was still up. And there were more behind it.

"Somebody help Link!" He shouted over his shoulder, before turning back to the fight at hand. He could hardly afford to split his attention again.

"Overestimation, huh. Should've thought they could still reach me here that fast."

Just as Adel was trying to get herself into a better position, the other cavaliers had swarmed her. She was hit with two of their attacks, and while she was still standing, the situation had become quite unfavorable. Adel grasped on her spear tighter. If she was going to attack here, then obviously it would lead to her being overwhelmed by the number of enemies. Thus...

"Don't...push it."

The revenant cavalier behind her said that to Adel as he moved to the side to strike at the enemy from across the wall, allowing Adel to retreat into the gates, using it as a chokepoint. She pulled out a bottle of vulnerary from her pocket and drank it, and she felt that her footing became more steady again. Looking at the enemies straight, Adel prepared herself to counter their next attacks.

There was barely any time to look at the situation with a clear mind. Just as Ciela healed Gunther, Link took another strong hit to himself. That alone would be enough for her to reach him, but the illumination cast by the spectral priest revealed another dire situation to her. Shiro, their recently allied frog protean was looking in an even worse situation. Yet he was too far to reach right now, and before she could even decide, Gunther was hit by another attack, and Sienna moved in right behind Link to attack the knight Link was struggling against, making reaching him more difficult. It sealed her decision for now, and she went to heal Gunther again.

Yet, just as she finished the verses, something else happened. Just as the enemy knight was felled by Sienna, another enemy came in and stabbed Link right through his guts. Link fell to the ground. Edrick yelled out, "Somebody help Link!". There was no space for her to reach him. Link's fate was now tied onto the spectral healer on his side. Could they een be trusted with such vital act?

Ciela wanted to scream, frustrated.

"Catriona, be ready, if they're coming from this direction they may swarm the other side soon as well. If Quatro gives warning they are approaching from that side I'll join you over there. Those two should be able to hold this line for the time being."

For once, her sister's words were in line with her own thinking. Catriona nodded brusquely, ready to move out. She was briefly reassured by the sight of Adelaide shaking off most of her injuries after applying the vulnerary to her wounds. She glanced up to be sure of the front line's safety before starting to move...and froze in place.

Everybody was still standing strong up front. Everybody but Link. His was the one figure she couldn't make out. She didn't realize how much she relied on the sight of his proud, unbowed back as he faced the enemy head-on...until now. She shook her head. No, he probably just moved positions. She was overthinking things. He had not fallen. Not Link. Turning away, the princess moved down, and just in time too.

The southernmost cavalier seemed intent on fighting Adelaide, swinging his spear at her and missing. The cavalier that had just been attacked by their own cavalier seemed confused, and began to attack the wall with little success. However, one of the cavaliers had noticed another opening in the wall, and rode south...just in time to meet Catriona's blade. While it was true that enemies might gather on the other side, it was also true that they had enemies on this side. With no time to use her torch, the woman had to just hope that her sword would strike true. Thankfully, it did, but at the same time, she was also injured by the enemy's attack.

A couple other cavaliers, attracted by the noise, headed south as well. Further north, some pegasus knights winged their way south as well.

Meanwhile, up north, Link was about to breathe his last when a strange tingling spread throughout his body, causing his chest to faintly rise and fall. Licorice snapped her head up, sniffing the air. "The smell of asphodel again," she growled, before looking around. She had heard Penelope's orders to fall back but she found it hard to leave the premise with a dead body on scene. Though if things are going as I believe, not so dead after all. The fox made up her mind, however, when she heard the flapping of wings to her left. Reinforcements heading to the south, and the party would need reinforcements of their own. Decision made, the fox spoke a quick, "With any luck you won't need me up here," and bounded south.

Link.

Link was.

Link was....down.

Gunther didn't want to think dead. The word was there, hovering in the back of his mind, threatening to come out. When Edrick shouted out for someone to help him the word almost broke free. That attack was something out of a nightmare. And there he was. On the ground. Next to him.

The healing that enveloped him felt like an insult. "He may be bleeding out and dying but you need it more." He would have snapped at the woman, shouted that Link needed help, except for the look he saw in her eyes. He had to hold it together. Link was down. He wasn't. If they both went down then the others would be in grave danger. He let out an angered shout, aimed at the Awakened, and thrust his lance forward.

It struck true...yet it didn't do much more than dent the enemy's armor. Gunther drew his lance back as the Knight attacked in return, striking the young man in the shoulder and sending a ripple of pain down his arm. He drew in a sharp breath but stayed his ground. He had no place to complain about a little pain after what had just happened to Link...

aonB0Ia.png?3

Penelope nodded as her sister went off to face the foes at the other nearest opening. She had wanted Licorice to go there instead but the Protean wouldn't have made it there before the Cavaliers made it through.

Okay. So.

Two groups of Cavaliers on this side. Pegasus Knights closing in. And over by the others...Ah. That was not good.

Penelope stared at the spot where Link had been standing. There was no way. What had she done wrong? Her strategy had caused this...

No, she couldn't think like that. Not now. There were others to keep safe yet. So what was the best route... "Ranged attackers!" Penelope shouted. "Target enemies not engaged with the front line if possible."

She wished she had given the order earlier. With the enemy so tightly packed it should have been obvious. A fallen foe would just be replaced. Putting more pressure on the front line.

She had to hope that Ciela or Dua could bring Link back up. She remembered the confidence Unil had shown in his companions and Penelope let loose the breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

Then she heard the sounds of the Pegasus wings. Wings....No! "Unil, the Pegasi, they'll fly over if we don't take them down." She put away her Wind tome and hesitantly took out the Elwind tome she had received earlier. She still was unsure she had enough skill to use it but she had to try. Her Wind Tome wasn't strong enough.

She took place on the other side of the wall, next to Unil, and began to chant. "Through strength of mind a light breeze may become a cyclone. Breath of life flow through my body and become a blade to strike down my enemies. Ancient spirits hear my cry, Elwind!"

Raising her arm up high the wind picked up around her and a large blade of wind formed and was sent down upon the Pegasus Knight. Unlike before Penelope could feel this one had cut deep and she couldn't help but smile.

Unil, after seeing Adel fall back, hefted his Javelin once more and launched it over the wall. It struck the wounded Pegasus Knight in the chest and pierced the Awakened, felling it.

"Alois!" Penelope called out. "I need you here, keep them from breaching the wall!"

---

Dua looked mournfully as Link fell to the ground. Ignoring the enemy that stood above him completely, the undead Priest knelt beside the warrior. "Not...your time..." He muttered, hefting his Mend staff and casting the healing light upon Link. Even as that rather unusual Mage got in position to let loose her magic.

Trim, nodding at the orders given, simply turned his body towards the right and chucked his axe, much the same as before, at one of the Knights standing by. The Awakened, staring hungrily at the opening where the Frog was, didn't so much as move as the axe came through and cut into its neck before circling around and coming back to Trim's hand.

Penvo flipped a knife in her hand before rasping out a "Heads...up." and tossing a pair of knives over the wall and into the chest of the Lancer on the other side.

Sienna's eyes were wide with shock and fear as Link's sword fell in front of her and his body slumped to the ground in a bloody mess, the lancer that had dealt the blow standing menacingly over it's victim. It's emotionless gaze turned towards Sienna as it prepared to move forward past Link.

Fear turned into sadness, sadness turned into regret, and regret turned into anger as the flames around Sienna reignited furiously. With rage in her eyes, Sienna launched a large fireball straight at the lancer, nailing it right in the chest. However, it survived the shot and was still standing. Scorched, but still standing. Thankfully, her attack had halted the creature and kept it from moving forward.

Standing her ground, Sienna prepared for another attack, until a warm sight caught her attention. The awakened healer had managed to save Link before he bled out. She breathed a sigh of relief, she couldn't stand the thought of someone dying right in front of her, especially someone she should've stayed and helped. Shaking the thought out of her head, she faced back towards the current problem, as there was still an army of creatures behind this one lancer.

While Tsetseg was managing to get into her groove of hitting the knight before her it didn't do much to change how little her arrows were piercing the hulking armored figures, and how many more glowing red eyes were behind them. Before that, though, there was Shiro in front of her, who seemed to be greatly injured. Wanting the big croaky one to not croak, Tsetseg reached into her pocket and presented a pouch of herbs to him. "Shiro, Shiro." She poked him from behind before saying, "here, here. Take them." After he did, the girl seemed to be a bit more relieved and got back into her natural stance, pulling the arrow and letting it loose once again. It once more struck the knight, though didn't  seem to do much to  jostle the knight's movements.

While Alois was managing to strike at the knights in front of him just fine, his attention was taken by something else as he heard Edrick shouting out about Link. Looking towards the body on the ground, Alois could only go wide eyed in disbelief as he saw the familiar green garbed man stained in red. As his hands began to tremble once more, no comment to be made at the sight, Alois turned his attention to the lancer that had presumably done him in. While his shock turned into fury, this was soon tempered as both a light washed over the body of Link and a large fireball barred his path from advancing. As he took a second to reassess the situation, and he could no longer get a clear shot at the lancer, the boy heard the orders from the princess, turning his attention to the horde of red glowing eyes at their side.

Giving a small slap to Gunther's armored back, Alois simply said, "keep steady up here." With that, he rushed off towards the wall, seeing the pegasus knights up close as they were fast approaching the wall. Throwing his axe at one of them, the blade managed to cut deep, both a large chunk through the torso and the back of the mount they were on before returning to boy's hand. Seeing the Awakened horseman's javelin toss combined with Penelope's wind blast take down the flying knight before them, Alois decided to keep his mind busy with anything other than what almost was on the front line saying, "fancy new trick there."

Shiro was panting hard as he stared down his enemy. They both weren't doing so hot, and it was just one giant endurance contest. Shiro didn't plan on losing, not even to a dead guy. Still... it was really starting to wear down on him.

"Shiro, Shiro." Shiro turned to see the Tseteg standing there, offering herbs. "here, here. Take them." Shiro morphed back into human form, needed thumbs to take them from her. She sighed and fired off another arrow. Shiro probably should have moved to get healed, but he couldn't let a fragile teammate try to stare down a knight. He quickly applied the medicine and got back into position. Time to take these guys down.

The knight in front of him then swung his sword, hitting Shiro, and causing him more pain. This wasn't going to be easy.

Edrick thrust his spear twice more, his fear in the moment finally boiling away into a more familiar anger. Truth be told he only needed to have struck once, as his first strike caught the knight in the chest, split its rusted breastplate open, and sent it falling to the ground with the red light in its eyes dying. The second strike caught it on the way down, breaking its rib cage open in another place as the young man stepped back into place. He wanted to scream, but his breath caught in his throat. His mouth felt like it was filled with cotton, and every muscle in his body felt like tense like a bow's string and hard as iron. Truth be told, he wanted to charge out into the opening in this formation that the felled knight had made. To get out there and try to earn the others some breathing room. His better senses caught up to him before he could, and one of the Lancers from behind stepped forward.

This one was faster, much faster, than the knight before it. Its limbs were not weighted down with all-but-useless metal, and it had both hands on its spear. In fact it was fast enough that its strike caught him sorely in the chest before he could even return to his stance. The impact forced the air out of his chest, and with it a fair amount of blood came up into his mouth. That same blood he spat out straight forward as he tried to settle back into a braced stance.

This isn't right! He thought to himself as his breathing came hard and ragged, often interrupted by a cough in the hopes of clearing the blood from his lungs. Even as his thoughts turned to the perversion of Inera's promise before him, and it had to be a perversion- there had to be someone acting apart from the Goddess who had done this, he could hardly bring himself to pray. His vision was fading around him, the world going blurry, but that almost comforted him. It was not the first time he had fought with more blood outside of him than inside, and somewhere under all of that anger was a growing determination. His own earlier words echoed in his mind, and he began muttering them when he could spare the breath. If nothing else he had to stay focused long enough to see this through. So he finally managed to brace himself, his face and body stained with blood, and opened his mouth for a moment even though he half expected to take a spear to the tongue for it.

"Te voi pune înapoi în morminte." Not the most considerable promise, given he was about to fall into his own, but he meant it.

"Gotcha"

Now that she was in a more advantageous position, Adel was able to dodge the enemy cavalier more easily, not to mention controlling that she was able to face them just one by one. A strike from the cavalier was easily dodged, and Adel retaliated with a lunge from herself, squarely hitting the undead horse before her. The horseman attempted to resist by striking with another, but it too, was easily dodged this time.

However the sight of the approaching pegasi worried her a lot. She saw that at least the allied cavalier alongside a few others were already in a position to handle it however, so she returned her focus to her opponent.

Before Ciela could really do much about the sissues, the revenant priest was able to get Link back to his feet. Still tense from the situation, Ciela tried her best to ignore Link and averted her gaze towards the distance - just as Edrick was also gored by the knight in front of him. Ignoring everything else,Ciela and Remy raced to his side, and with some considerate effort, she casted her healing spell at him.

"Tu nu mori azi."

A few seconds of peaceful oblivion, that was all he got. A few seconds of silence where he couldn’t hear a pained scream or battle cry. A familiar tingling washed over him again after that and all his senses rushed back to him, and Link jerked upright, gasping for air.

The first thing he saw the undead priest hovering over him. Its staff was still extended toward him, bright magical light glowing on the end of it. So that was how he had survived. He pressed a hand to where just a few moments before there had been a gaping hole in his abdomen, but his fingers brushed over a small scar instead. Link shuddered. No wonder most Pontic warriors thought they were invincible; for the second time in his life he should have died, but this time there was no uber rare elixir to save him, just a common (in some places) type of magic.

Another fireball blasted over his head and Link was reminded of where he was at. Spirits, he need to hurry up and take his position. Pushing away all his lingering thoughts of death Link snatched his sword up from behind him and charged toward the Lancer who had stabbed him, who was still reeling from Sienna’s fiery blast, and slashed the creature’s head off with one sturdy swing of his blade.

It tumbled to the ground, head rolling, and another stepped up to stab at Link, but the soldier was so full of adrenaline from his dance with death that he pirouetted out of the way. “We broke their rank, so it’s gonna get easier from here! How are the princesses doing?”

BGM

Licorice ran through the shrine, down toward the sounds of fighting. It looked as if the lord was carrying her own quite well, her sword cutting across the enemy cavalier's chest in a sudden lunge. Wispy smoke the color of dark blood leaked from the wound. Most living men, with such a wound inflicted, would hesitate to attack, but the undead appeared undaunted. It thrust its lance forward, briefly pinning the woman to the ground before its horse retreated a couple steps. Not that it needed to. Catriona looked on the verge of death, a gaping hole in her chest.

"Hold on, I'm almost there!" the fox cried, increasing her speed. The princess mumbled something unintelligible back, so whether she heard her or not was up for debate.

Further north, the pegasus knights flew over the wall, alighting in the courtyard. The heavily injured one went for Penelope, hitting her with its lance. Two went for Alois, trapping him against the wall. The one to his east missed, but the one to his north managed to hit, though the blow didn't faze the fighter as much when compared to the attack on the tactician. The last one ignored the melee entirely and flew south, toward Catriona.

The lord looked up and saw the flier coming for her. Is this...how it ends? she thought. No, it can't be. I won't let it. Summoning a surge of strength, she rolled to the side. A thud came from beside her. The lance had buried itself into the yellowed grass, right next to her head. She coughed up blood. I can...only do this much.

At the northern exit, the enemies prepared to attack once more, untiring and relentless.

And then, all the torches, save one, flickered out.

It was dark. He could hear enemies behind them. But Link was okay. More than okay he seemed ready to dive back into action.

What else could Gunther do but fight?

Looking at the foe in the dark would have been less nerve-wracking, oddly, than not given their corpse-like appearance. But those eyes....those eyes were something that Gunther didn't think he'd forget.

At least he knew where the enemy was. With a grunt the Knight stepped forward and thrust his lance towards the glowing eyes. The opposing Knight attacked at the same time, striking Gunther's shoulder, damaging the armor, and nearly making his attack go wild. But he felt it land, unsure exactly where he hit, and that was enough for now.

Pulling his lance back his eyes flicked over to where Link was. The young man had asked about the princesses. If he were being honest Gunther felt nervous with the sounds of battle behind him. However, knowing them... "I can't imagine they'd let this get to them. Are...Er, we won't let them get to us." He wished he had sounded more confident. He had been about to ask the man if he were alright but...that felt like a rather wrong statement given what he had just gone through.

She heard them coming over the wall. The girl had known they wouldn't be able to get them all, yet...part of her hoped it wouldn't come to this. She gasped as she heard the large creature touch ground near her and spun to face it just as a lance cut through her side, opening a wound and causing pain. Grasping at the wound, feeling the blood around her fingers, she felt faint.

Then she heard the sounds of combat from the south and, glancing over, she thought she saw her sister being overwhelmed.

She couldn't let this get to her. Not now. Not when she was needed. "Cat!" Penelope called out, referring to her sister by her shortened name in a rare moment, "fall back and heal, Licorice can take your place for now. You mustn't die here!"

She wanted to get one of the healers to come down closer but with these foes nearby...

The girl glanced over at the opponent in front of her, who was starting to rise back up for another attack, and was that her blood she saw falling from the tip, and braced herself...

Only for Unil to come thundering in and, aiming his heavier Steel Lance upward, thrust into the Pegasus Knight's lightly armored chest, felling it. "No one...will fall...with me here." he told her. The statement reassuring the girl despite the odd circumstances.

Taking a deep breath, trying to ignore the throbbing pain, she turned to the next closest foe. Catching eyes with Alois the girl gave him a meaningful nod. "Elwind!" She called out, sending a large blade of wind slicing from the opposite side as the Fighter, catching the Pegasus Knight in the side and almost knocking them off their mount. "Now!" She shouted to Alois.

---

Trim turned towards the Pegasus Knights and curled his lip. He was tempted to go over there and help out the living allies who seemed to be struggling so much...but he hadn't been asked and it would've taken some time to reach them. "Bah, stupid...ponies." He muttered, and tossed his axe once more at the Knight who stood there and took it, seemingly unsure where this attack was coming from.

Likewise Penvo, though she didn't spare a glance back, attacked a foe who was unable to attack back. More and more knives peppered the Lancer, slowly turning it into a pincushion, and the Awakened Lancer stumbled and fell to a knee briefly before pulling itself back up.

Dua gazed around sadly. So many injured, yet he could only do so much...He could hear the strange frog-creature battling relentlessly, despite his many wounds and, hesitating only a moment, he headed for the man. Raising his staff once next to him he rasped out. "No one should...fight without...aid."

[spoiler=OOC]So as a note, I intend for Dua to move AFTER Shiro attacks. Unless Saiku doesn't post, of course.

With her own rhythm starting to be assured, the girl was able to keep up the pressure on the knight before her. In spite of being entirely shrouded in darkness, Tsetseg knew that the knight hadn't moved much from its spot, and its red eyes gave a perfect target for her to aim towards. And so, with no real impediment towards her shots, the girl took out another arrow and began to pull it back. Seeing the large lumbering form begin to move towards Shiro yet again, Tsetseg fired off another arrow, sinking into the shoulder of the knight and forcing its  arm back. As the attack of the knight was now delayed, Tsetseg had hoped she had given a good enough window for Shiro to move in and strike.

After the strike of his hand axe, Alois saw the pegasus knights begin to make their move as the three of them flew over the wall. As one of them had struck the princess next to him, before the boy could react, two more swooped down to strike at him. With the first clumsy attack being thrust towards him, the boy managed to move out of the way, though only into the path of the second one. Feeling the lance pierce his side, the wind briefly got knocked out of him as there was an almost unnatural force behind the lance attack. Wincing in pain, Alois managed to push back against the lance and force the pegasus knight to pull it back, before appearing to go for a second strike. Before it could, however, a large blade of wind cut into the side of the creature, nearly knocking it off its mount and leaving a nice gash opened in the side. Switching from one axe to another, as the princess called out to him, the boy leaped towards his target.

With the axe driving into the already open wound of the Awakened, with one grunt, Alois pushed his axe down and through the torso of the dead man tearing through its flesh and into the flesh of its mount underneath, slaying both of them in the  process as  they dropped to the ground. Turning his attention towards the other pegasus  knight, he shouted back saying, "only one more to go."
