Story

War...War never changes.

You don't remember much about the beginning of all of this...all your remember were the local news broadcasts.  Russian Forces were spotted behind the borders of North Korea.  Tensions rose between the UN and Russia, and soon Russia withdrew their allegiance with the UN all together.  The goal of the Russian and N. Korean conglomerate was to conquer both South Korea, and China. There was no choice in the matter...we were at war.  A few UN land victories later, Russia saw no choice but to resort to Nuclear Tactics, launching multiple warheads to each continent.  Every other nation capable, aimed their own nukes at Russia and Korea...it was mutually assured destruction.

You thought it was silly for your parents to buy that weird looking ticket when they did.  You thought it would never come in handy.  You thought it was weird that it had your name on it.  Before the madness began, you packed a bag with all your important things and were taken to a subway.  You thought it was strange that your parents didn't pack anything.  You started worrying when your parents only had one of those weird tickets.  You panicked when you were pushed onto a train all by yourself.  The train sank lower and lower into the earth, and then...you were off.  After a long ride, you wake up and are brought to Shelter 64, an underground bomb shelter stationed underneath the Island of Madagascar.

10 years has passed since that day...and no one has poked their heads above the surface.  Not with all that nuclear fallout anyways!  Food is running low, and the survivors who made it this far won't last much longer without action.

Will you survive?

[spoiler=Rules]

1. All YCM rules apply you dingus.

2. I and co-hosts have the final say.

3. Have fun!

4. Be sure to post actively...a week without posting will put you on a watch list.  It's very easy to ax a character in a nuclear wasteland <3

5. Be nice to each other!  No meanie heads allowed!

6. This RP will be rated PG-16...bring on the violence!

[spoiler=Plot]

This RP will be focused on survival.  It takes place 10 years in the future, after a nuclear winter has fallen over the earth.  The surface is barren, and filled with a myriad of hazards, beast and biological alike.  Your generators are running low...your food source is dwindling fast.  Will you rise to make sure that you don't die?!  Or will you never make it past the surface?

[spoiler=Shelter 64]

Welcome to your home for the next [insert estimate time frame for severity of calamity]!

Shelter 64 is a state of the art shelter to protect it's denizens from the fallout of any natural disaster, or even man-made disaster!  It comes equipped with a dining facility, a lounge area, Sanitary stations, research centers, and rooms for all it's occupants!  The food supply mainly consists of freeze dried meals.  They should last for about 15 years!  Water comes from the ocean off the shores of Madagascar, and is filtered of all the minerals that would leave someone dehydrated.  Salt water would be counterproductive to surviving after all!

Doctor Lebovitz is the closest thing in Shelter 64 that the kids have to a guardian.  He was tasked with looking over the sole surviving members of the human race that dwell within Shelter 64.  He specialized in pediatrics back before all this happened, as has become close with his patients, even to the point where they call him Doctor Joe.  He has read up on all the manuals left in his care, and knows everything there is to know about the shelter and it's protocols.

[spoiler=The Missing Three]

Three of the teens who were placed in Shelter 64 have mysteriously gone missing, each one year apart from each other.  Their names were Taichi, Julia, and Penny.  Security cameras show all three leaving the facility, exiting the shelter to never be seen again.  Doctor Joseph uses the three as an example for why they should never leave.

[spoiler=Chazz]

"Our chances of survival are...not optimal."

Name: Chasley Pennington

Sex: Male

Age: 18

[spoiler=Appearance:]

6DP5d34.jpg

Height: 5'10"

Weight: 160 lbs

[spoiler=Personality:]

Chasley is a stiff person to say the least.  He sticks to the rules and never diverges from a path with a higher rate of success than the others.  He prefers to calculate his chances rather than risk them to the hands of fate.  He usually keeps to himself, preferring to stick his nose into an operating manual than butt into any conversation he wasn't previously apart of.  That doesn't mean he won't talk to people though, as he likes to hold intelligent and meaningful conversations with those that can keep up with them.  To keep conversations going, or to surprise his talking partner, Chasley is able to bring up quite the nugget of trivia pertaining to whatever topic that has been brought up.  He loves teaching others new things, he sought to be a teacher before all of this happened.

[spoiler=Biography:]

Chasley's memories are a bit fuzzy, but he can still remember his most cherished memories that occurred before the big bang on the surface did.  He was raised on an estate in England, on the countryside.  Sheep littered his front yard, and he owned a herding dog named Chester.  He has no recollection of his mother, and his dad was the one who raised him ever since he could remember.  According to his dad, his mother died during childbirth.  His father went on to say that he never ever blamed Chasley, and cherished him twice as much to honor his wife's memory.  His dad worked as a professor at Oxford, but Chasley forgot what field he taught.

At home, Chasley and his father made a hobby of fixing up old machines.  Washers, Cars, radios, you name it, the two worked on it and restored the object to brand new.  His father told him that learning to fix things bettered a man and his character, and that it was very important to follow the directions in each products manual.  He also had told Chasley never to try to do this to a woman, some of them came broken.  Chasley loved seeing an old rust bucket get the chance to become useful again, and so he took his fathers teachings, and started fixing stuff on his own while his father was away at work.

One day, Chasley heard the faint sound of sirens coming from the city.  Crashing and banging commenced as his father hurried down the stairs, brandishing an odd ticket he'd never seen before.  The two were off to the city, and his dad started going over the speed limit.  Chasley never knew his dad to disregard the speed limits, and it worried Chasley.  The next thing he knew, he was being rushed through a crowd of frightened citizens, as guards saw his father waving the ticket in the air, and hurried to grab Chasley and put him on the metro.  Losing the closest thing to him in this world was incredibly heart-wrenching...would he be able to fix that?

Skills: Can fix a multitude of electronics and machines, provided a manual is available.  Mathematics pro!

Inventory: Calculator.  Framed picture of himself, his father, and Chester.  A screwdriver with a strange head.

[spoiler=The Younger Sister]

W4jTDc1.jpg
"Don't do anything stupid, okay?"

Name: Fiona O'Connor

Sex: Female

Age: 18

[spoiler=Appearance]QJCYCoG.jpg
At 5'5" and weighing 118 pounds, Fiona's slight physical fitness would hint that she was once in a sports team, but still keeps up with at least basic exercise.  She has short red hair and vivid green eyes, and wears a pair of black-framed glasses to see with.  She owns and will more often than not wear a necklace ending in a pendant containing an old photograph of herself and her family.

[spoiler=Personality]

If there is a structure of order and rules, rest assured Fiona will adhere to it.  This is this way for a reason, and there is an explanation for why that isn't like that.  Her adherence to order and rules can make her seem like a goody two-shoes type at times, but that is not quite the case.  It's not that so much as the idea of everyone and everything running wild, doing as they please when they please with no way to measure out what they should and shouldn't do, drives Fiona straight up the wall like nothing else will except real live chaos.  Odds are that in such a situation, she'll be the first one to try and restore order.

Putting aside her compulsion to adhere to and maintain order, Fiona is a person who tends to move along with whatever life throws her way, typically without being bothered by any of it.  She values friends and family, and will do everything her power to defend them, but anything not involving them or her is simply not her problem.  She is notably distant and cold with others.  It's not that she dislikes people.  She just doesn't care, because whatever is going on with them is probably none of her business, so she doesn't care about it.

She is a notably patient person as well.  While she can be cold, she is very forgiving of others, and is willing to help them improve on something they have failed at if she can.  However, this patience means that when finally set off, there is no shelter from Fiona's rage.  When angered at long last, Fiona is a stark contrast to her usual calm, distant self, and becomes violet and hateful, most of all to whoever set her off.  She enjoys this even less than whoever she may hurt during this time, and if she has wronged somebody, she'll do her best to set things right again.

[spoiler=Biography]

The younger of two, the story of Fiona O'Connor is a bumpy one full of ups and downs.  She was born into a family that loved her greatly, with a father, mother, uncle, and an older sister.  There was nothing the sister would not do for Fiona, but at the same time, Fiona could tell her sister was...well...chaotic.  Violent.  Short-tempered.  A girl of chaos, if you will.  As a means of keeping her tendencies in check, Fiona developed a strict adherence to rules and order, and encouraged her sister to do the same.

Growing up, Fiona wanted to be an athlete.  Baseball in particular was a sport she liked.  It took some convincing, but Fiona was put into a kids' team when she was eight years of age.  With all her spare time, she practiced with all she had.  Not long after her first game, however, she was put onto a subway with a strange-looking ticket.  It's not a day she has any intention of forgetting.

"Why me?" she'd sometimes ask herself.  "Why not Morgan instead?  She's older, stronger, and braver than me."  Years began to pass, and while her doubts became mere memories, the questions behind them haven't.  She adjusted to life in Shelter 64, but over time new questions began arising as she grew more and more aware of the situation up above.  "Did anyone else make it?  Is the surface still inhabitable?  What about my sister?"  These and more have been nagging at her for the last few years, and Fiona herself has grown increasingly frustrated with the inability to find out.

With food running low in the shelter, there is...one option.  It would be pure insanity, but perhaps going to the surface would work out.  As a side-benefit, Fiona would have a chance at finding her answers.  It would certainly beat starving to death.  A stark contrast to anything she's ever done before, Fiona has been mustering up her courage to either make the suggestion, or go with it if someone else beats her to the punch.

Skills: Although she hasn't played in ten years, Fiona was pretty good at baseball when she was small.  She's also very good at finding loopholes in rules.  She's also pretty decent at playing the flute.

Inventory: The only possessions Fiona carries with her are her sister's old cell phone (a parting gift; out of service), a necklace containing a family photo, and and a flute.  She often will carry some kind of book with her as well.

[spoiler=The Wimp]

tMg9emQ.png
"No! I don't want to leave! After all...it's safer here, right?"

Name: James Teach
Sex: Male
Age: 16

Birthday: February 20
[spoiler=Appearance]

ij7r3Ls.png

Height: 5'7"   Weight: 140 lbs

Inheriting the coloring of his Korean mother, James is rather wiry. He has a timid demeanor but reacts badly to bullying.

[spoiler=Personality]

Obsessed with looking good and not making an embarrassment of himself, James' preoccupation with this often leads to nervousness, which often impedes his goal. Rather emotional, he cries rather easily, and gets defensive when somebody comments about it. Because of this, one might think he is rather pathetic.

However, James has a tremendous willpower. Not to do his best, but to be the best. He doesn't let this override his natural consideration for others though. He can go overboard in considering others, and let their opinions guide his own, sacrificing his own thoughts to please others. One might say he's more of a reactive personality, or just wishy-washy.

James is a bit of a whiner and a coward. He doesn't like scary movies, and is easily cowed by a dark or intense atmosphere. He doesn't always know when to shut up and be quiet, but he doesn't mean anything bad by his actions.

[spoiler=Biography]

James came from a rather average family. There wasn't much about them that stood out. He entered school and was immediately bullied, but fought back with a ferocity that surprised his aggressors. They then called him crazy and violent and he became known as a problem child in school. However, his personality made the teachers a bit more understanding than they otherwise would have. His parents understood too, and even encouraged him to stand up for himself more.

When James was six he boarded a train set for the shelter, and it was a whirlwind of confusion after that. He remembers crying for his family, and feeling lost and alone.

As the years rolled by, James grew older, but without guidance, his psyche remained rather childlike. He is afraid of seeing the horrors of the surface with his own eyes, and would rather remain in the shelter for the rest of his life. However, he might not have a choice, not with the food shortage...

Skills: James isn't particularly good at anything. The one thing he does have is a photographic memory, but seeing as he doesn't have much to remember besides living in a shelter for most of his life, this hasn't helped him with much. He can draw from memory or observation, but he lacks the creativity or passion for it that most artists have.
Inventory: A family photo, drawn portraits of his family, and a few books he keeps more out of nostalgia than actual need.

  • 2 weeks later...

[spoiler=Christine Evelynn Miller]6sRTMmm.png

"Why is everybody so nervous? The worst is already past us."

x393wz.jpg

Name: Christine "Christie" Evelynn Miller

Sex: Female

Age: 20

[spoiler=Appearance]

2D8Ahf5.png

"Ha! Caught you staring."

Christie stands at a proud 5'5'' and weights 120 pounds.

[spoiler=Personality]

"I'd describe myself as a bohemian."

Christie's definition of fun is a good cup of coffee, some snacks and a good book. While really smart, she's a lazy person who always has a bored look in her eyes. She constantly finds herself lost in thought, making her space out when she's being talked to about something not particularly relevant nor interesting to her. While she may come off as rude because of her attitude, Christie can be a really good friend to anyone who catches her attention. She's also not a stranger to telling jokes, even if the situation doesn't call for it.

Althought extremely laid-back and cool, even Christie can crack under pressure. This phenomenon usually manifests as a short burst of violence against the closest thing around, after which she quietly apologizes and goes back to her usual self.

[spoiler=Biography]

"It all began when my home planet explo-...wrong origin story."
Christine Evelynn Miller was born to Rose Miller and an unknown father in a small hospital in the town of Framlingham in Suffolk, England. Christie was an energetic, yet respectful and lively girl, even without her mother's constant presence, who barely had time for her with her two full-time jobs. The few hours of the day Rose spent with her daughter were, however, not as happy as Christie would have wanted.
Rose was under constant stress, she couldn't make ends meet and had a drinking problem. She constantly vented these concerns on her young daughter. Christie thus decided not to be another problem for her mother and became a more low-key person, only speaking up to offer her advice or crack a joke. About this time was when she found her love for reading and, later on, writing.
A couple of years later, a few weeks after Christie's tenth birthday, her mother handed her a ticket with her name on it. Christie's more vivid memory of that day was her mother's face as the train started moving: she was smiling.
To this day, Christie remembers her past life with bitter feelings; her life underground had been far better than that with her mother. After all, she enjoys writing and slacking off far more than taking care of an unstable human being. However, deep inside her, the feeling that her comfy underground life might soon be over creeps up on her. And, with the recent food shortage, Christie's fears might just come true.

Skills:

  • Knowledgeable: Having read a lot of books on various subjects from a young life and on the Shelter has given Christie a nice grasp on a bunch of different topics. More important is her fluency in not only English but Spanish and German, and first-aid knowledge like CPR, tourniquets and bandaging.
  • Thick-skinned: Christie's relationship with her mother has taught her how to hide her negative emotions like anger, disappointment and sadness effectively. She's not shaken by stressful situations as easily as the average person.

Inventory:

  • Book collection: Books ranging from old english literature to medicine manuals and history records. She keeps these in her room most of the time, but can always be seen walking around the Shelter with one under her arm.
  • Notepad: As any writer'd tell you, inspiration can hit at any time. Christie knows this all too well, and never leaves her room without a notepad in her back pocket and at least two pens on her front one.

Other:

  • Christie's favourite book is Crime and Punishment.
  • She's a real light-weight when it comes to drinking.

This sounds really, really promising. Can't wait.
