ChampionZero
The inspiration: In the original manga and the few first arcs of Yu-Gi-Oh!, Fusion Monsters were not cards, but were simply two or more cards placed on top of one another that rendered a new holographic monster. The idea: Layer cards have any number of these three effects: OVERLAYER, UNDERLAYER and MOSAIC. Overlayer effects can only activate if the card has been layered over another card, or another card has been layered under it. Underlayer effects only activate if a card as been layered over it, or if it has been layered under another card. Layer cards can be Effect Monsters, Spells, and Traps only. Underlayer Example: Orichalcum WingsNormal SpellLayer this card under a monster you control. UNDERLAYER: A monster Layered over this card can attack your opponent directly by halving its ATK. Overlayer Example: Cursed ArmorDARKLevel 4[Fiend/Effect]When this card is destroyed by battle, Layer it over the opposing monster. OVERLAYER: A monster Layered under this card has its ATK and DEF reduced to 0. Also it cannot attack or change battle positions. If a monster Layered under this card is used as a Tribute or as Material for a Special Summon, Layer this card over the monster Summoned this way.ATK: 1000 / DEF: 1000 Certain monsters can be Layered with certain other monsters to become a Mosaic. Mosaic Example: Grisly SkullDARKLevel 3[Zombie / Effect]Once per turn, you can Layer this card over one "Cursed Armor" you control. MOSAIC: If this card has been Layered over a "Cursed Armor" you control, it becomes "Cursed Dullahan" (Zombie-Type/DARK/Level 7/ATK 2500 / DEF 2000), and its effect becomes "If this monster attacked but did not deal battle damage, you can deal 1000 points of Effect Damage to your opponent by sending a Layered Grisly Skull to the Graveyard. If this monster is attacked by an opponent's monster, you can send a Layered Cursed Armor to the graveyard to negate all battle damage dealt to you this turn."ATK: 0 / DEF:
Trebuchet MS
So, does the sequence of how you build the stack determine whether under/over layer effects apply? Or can a player just put their cards at any position in a stack? What happens if a stack of cards would leave the field?
ChampionZero
So, does the sequence of how you build the stack determine whether under/over layer effects apply? Or can a player just put their cards at any position in a stack? Good question. The stack of cards and their positions would depend on what the card said to Layer it to, and where. A card that was Layered under a monster would only be under that monster. In the scenario where a new card is added under that monster, it's added to the bottom, because regardless of position, it's still under the monster in the stack. What happens if a stack of cards would leave the field? Similar to an Xyz Monster's Materials, only if the Monster that was summoned to the zone the stack is in were to leave, would that stack take all of its layers with it. But if you only targeted one Layer. It would be removed without any other effect on the stack.
