Anya's Ghost

Sleepy

Recommended Posts

Today my brother and I went to Barnes and Noble. I hadn't gone to a bookstore with a decent comic section ever since Borders went extinct. I had to look for it and is way out of my way home.

Anyways, I was looking through the comics and manga sections, and the comics section was like 90% Marvel and DC stuff, but I stumbled upon this little comic. I found the art and concept for the story pretty charming after looking inside for a little bit so I bought it. I liked it quite a bit.

Has anybody read it or even heard of it?

This sheet fuucked me up. I'm lucky enough to have a free 3rd period, and we just so happen to have a sizable graphic novel section in our school library, containing this very book. I enjoyed this thoroughly and it probably started me on a road lined with graphic novels. This one is a good read, highly recommend.

I don't think I have heard about it before, but if you went as far as to make a thread on it, plus it got Aez's approval, now it got me interested. I will look forward to getting a physical copy when I get the chance.

The main girl is Russian, and occasionally smokes, but other than those, the rest of her is so relatable to me that it hurts, down to a bunch of her interactions with her mom. I'm helping my mom with similar transactions IRL as she was, and my mom had similar kind of attitudes, I similarly avoid getting dragged to church, I feel uncomfortable with certain clothes she is uncomfortable with, I make a fool of myself at Gym class (not like she did, but I vomited on my first day at middle school and the whole school got the news real fast), my complaining about cooking sometimes, I could go on and on.... I realize she was made this way on purpose because some of those aren't uncommon traits, but still..

I enjoyed it throughout, although I'm more insecure about recommending things I like because... well, I just do, but I do think it is a great book.

  • 1 year later...

I have been under the impression she is meant to look cute, and that it is meant to contrast with how she thinks of herself. She has memories of having been overweight and she looks in the mirror still thinking she kind of is. She doesn't like smoking but she does it because she thinks she looks cool. She had a period in her life where she struggled trying to get rid of her foreign accent that caused her to get bullied. Then we get her Russian friend who embodies some of the traits of hers that she tried to get rid of when she was in his shoes, yet he seems to be oblivious to those very things that bothered her so much.

Isn't her friend Irish. Her name is an Irish name, and she was the best character in the comic. She didn't do much though besides pointing out the obvious fact that her crush is just a perv.

Random but I can't take the nerd bullying stereotype seriously, I mean its 2011. Everything else is pretty believable for its time though.

You found online scans of the actual book?  Awesome. Do they have it all?

I see what you are saying about the bullying bit. None of my schools in Mexico had that kind of bullying in my day, and the American schools I was at only had something like that during middle school, back in 2003.... Can't confirm or deny anything current though, I have no idea how things are currently in terms of bullying generally.

EDIT:
Oh and it was Irish? sorry about that... It has been over a year since I last read it.

You can literally read the book online like any other disposable manga websites. It's not good for the author and you should really support them since comics makes less money than manga, and I have no guilt in cheating out a bunch of Easterners compared to say Westerners.

Bullying has no longer been about big mean guys beating up nerdy losers. That may be a thing in the 70s or 80s but its been so grossly exaggerated in Western media it became some sort of a running joke. Realistic bullies these day use manipulation and exclusion, meaning petty stuff like spreading rumors.

Also yeah you don't really need to stress, I thought Siobhan was a boy too but I had to check her name to see its a feminine Irish name.

Well yeah agreed, support the industry. I found out about this through buying the book at a physical store. Though I'm still interested in finding some trace of those online because it is kind of risky to stumble upon something sealed in a bag at the comic store and not knowing anything about it..... When I found it it was kind of a risk purchase because of that, and how it was the only copy there all buried in the shelves so I wasn't sure I'd see it again if I didn't get it. That doesn't always end well for me so sites that at least could give me a bunch of titles to look up would be nice to not go in as blind lol.

Bullies can come in a variety of forms, that scene IS stereotypical, but what can I tell you? During my school days, I can at least say I've met such a wide range of them.... From the "I'll slam your head against the table and almost catch your hair on fire as a prank" (true stories btw) kind of bullies, to the sly ones that test out your patience and always try to bother you as much as possible on a point where you are still unsure if it is enough to warrant action from you....

Oh no, I didn't mean Siobhan xD

I was talking about Dima for the most part.
