Plot
The Red Dust Scrap and Salvage Corporation: No tech is too alien for us to bust!

That’s the motto of Red Dust, a small company of treasure hunters, salvagers and general gunslingers. They eke out a living across the galactic frontier, going where wars were fought and ruins now stand in search of valuable resources to sell. For the most part, the edge of the Orion Arm has been a lawless realm, where the touch of the government is light at best and too often nonexistent. As it’s a dog-eat-dog world no matter where you go, alliances are rare, but this group of roguish adventurers have stuck together through thick and thin. However, their bonds may soon be tested, as a mysterious piece of technology recovered from a crash site puts them in the center of a much greater conspiracy.

An adventure through the frontier of space begins!

Guidelines
  • This is a spaghetti Western/space exploration RP, with traces of Cowboy Bebop, Borderlands, Trigun and Uncharted. While things will stay relatively local at first, we will be expanding to the rest of the world later on. Please keep this in mind when applying and keep your characters appropriate to the setting.
  • That said, we are not a shonen RP! More seinen than anything. While combat is an aspect of this RP, it is not the focus by any means. Characters will be amoral. Bad stuff will go down.
  • Standard RP section rules apply. Please read the appropriate thread before posting your application. You should know by now where to find them.
  • At least 100 words per in-character post.
  • You have creative freedom when making your character, but please remember that GM word is final, and you may be asked to change things if deemed necessary. There’s a fine line between over-the-top and just plain silly: I expect you to know where that lies.
  • Being accepted into this RP means that you are committed to seeing it advance. If you end up falling inactive, you may be dismissed from participating. When posting, please let at least two people go before you before posting again; and aim to post 2-3 times a week. If for some reason you’ll need to be inactive for an extended period, please let the hosts know so they can write around your absence.
  • Your characters don’t have plot armor. If you write your way into a corner, I as GM may be forced to kill your character off. If that’s the case, you can reapply with another.
  • As of right now, I only want one character per player. If you are competing for a particular position against another applicant… well, tough. I’ll pick applications based on how I think the characters will overlap and interact with one another.
  • Read everything in the Google Doc before starting your app.
Background Information
Here's a pretty Google Doc. Read it and love it. Has all the background information you'll need for filling out your app.

[spoiler=Aadil al-Bashir, the ship doctor]

b96963f7bfa57a8068d7d64a8999b635.jpg

"Well, this is a salvage ship. I'm a salvaged doctor."

Name: Aadil al-Bashir (عديل البشير "a-deel albashir")
Epithet: "Doc" (preferably said with a strong sarcastic tone) or "Jules"
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Orientation: Heterosexual
Crew Role: Medic and laboratory technician

Appearance: At first, Aadil looks quite out of place on the Red Witch: he's a 20something young man of Arabian descent, who always wears a weirdly pristine white labcoat he somehow manages to protect from the omnipresent grease and filth that cover most surfaces on the Witch.
He's clean-shaven, with a soft, youthful face, reaching 5'8'' in height, and looks nothing like what one would expect from a salvager, but he's nonetheless a part of the Witch as much as the Witch is a part of him, as his jumpiness and the badly disguised gun he keeps under his armpit quickly reveal.

Personality: Aadil is not just in looks, but also in behavior not what one would expect to find on a salvager/pirate ship: he's a socially awkward, amiable geek who keeps a collection of old-timey sci-fi comics, movies and videogames in his hard drive. He's not an aggressive guy, and usually prefers to let the rest of the crew handle the dirty work, and actually do stuff only when his skills are required with a certain urgency.
Nevertheless, the dangerous life he's been leading for the past two years in the edge of the Orion arm along with Red Dust Corporation have left their mark: he's rather paranoid at times, and due to his chronic allergy to work, he tends to be very manipulative when trying to pass that work off to someone else.
He changes radically when working at some crazy experiment, however: he becomes euphoric and hyperactive, and while his methodology isn't the most rigorous, he does get result - even if he has to occasionally blow something up to do it.

Background: Aadil was the son of a wealthy family of colonists based on Willow. His mother was the owner of a major mining company based on Vitex, and his father was an associate researcher on the Acacia Research Council. He had a pretty comfortable infancy and studied in the best schools the colonies had, until it was the moment for him to follow his father's footsteps and become a biologist. So, he enrolled to the Acacia branch of the Central University of La Plata.
But there was a problem. Aadil didn't want the life his parents had envisioned for him. In fact, he often found himself longing for the romantic pirate's life, probably influenced by his beloved comics and movies. So, after four years of study, he finally found the perfect occasion: instead of taking the shuttle back home, he took the one headed for Agave, one of the smaller colonies on Willow, where he heard pirates tended to hang out. He went there and found in a certain dingy saloon the crew of the Red Witch. With some begging and promises, he managed to convince them to take him on board, where he's been serving as the ship's resident medic and chemist.

Weapons: A simple nail gun he had the engineer modify to also be able to shoot small capsules containing whatever crazy concoction he might put in them.

Inventory: The lab's equipment, a pocket protector, 10 "special" shells, a bag with medical supplies including painkillers, antiseptics, antistaminics, antibiotics and nutritional capsules.

Aptitudes:

  • Chemistry knowledge: Knows organic and inorganic chemistry, which lets him create basic corrosive, explosive and other types of compounds, as well as simple polymers.
  • First Aid Training: Has the training necessary to give first aid to injured or sick people
  • Microbiologist: Knows the most common species and strains of bacteria, and can culture them. Can use genetic engineering techniques that rely on already known genes and processes.
  • Lab technician: Knows how to use the most common laboratory tools.
  • Boy Scout: Knows the basics of survival in space and planetside well enough to survive for an appreciable time in absence of unusual threats.

[spoiler=Nils]

idAs1Iq.jpg

"Who's a good boy!? Who's a good boy!? You are! Yes! You! Are!"

8iE6yRj4T.png

Name: Nils Atanah-ili

Epithet: Green Thumb

Age: 30

Gender: Genderfluid

Orientation: Asexual

Crew Role: Field Engineer

[spoiler=Appearance]

reference image

Rather short for a 30 year old Nils is only about 5'3" and only weighs about 119 lbs. Nils has an androgynous appearance, and their choice of clothing also for the most part remains generally gender neutral as well. While Nils does not have any particularly culturally defining features they do speak with a somewhat refined speech pattern. Nobody is really sure what Nils' actual hair color is as they keep it dyed green, and despite the impracticality of it keep their hair long simply tying it up during situations when long hair would not be ideal. Occasionally Nils will also wear some form of make-up, usually brightly colored and around their eyes.

While on-board the Red Witch Nils wears a white dress, and loose fitting pants pants with tan, well worn sandals. During missions in atmosphere Nils wears clothing more practical for salvaging and scraping parts. The primary part of Nils' mission uniform is a sleeveless body suit that is able to regulate their body temperature so that Nils does not have to worry about overheating. They also wear tight bindings, which are made from tough animal hide, around their arms and hands.Rounding out the outfit is a well worn red tank top, loose brown military pants, and black leather boots.

During missions that take place out of atmosphere, or on hazardous planets such as Acacia Nils wears a OEC issue space suit. It is a tight bodysuit that is constantly reading its wearer's vitals. The helmet is also most oval shaped, and displays data gathered by the suit on a HUD. An expensive and rare piece of equipment it's not known how Nils came by the OEC suit, and they don't seem to eager to spill the beans.

x393wz.jpg

[spoiler=Personality]A generally mellow person Nils is a very social animal. They enjoy the company of others, and their friendly personality makes it quite easy for other crew members to approach them. Nils has a very sarcastic sense of humour, and often has a witty remark prepared even in some inappropriate situations(such as situations that can end with them being killed). The type of person to wear their heart on their sleeve Nils is very open about their own emotions. However around animals Nils' demeanor changes completely. Becoming a blubbering, baby talking mess Nils has unconditional love for all animals(and would keep some on the Red Witch if Hanna let her).

While in most cases Nils is quite open to talking and listening to others on the Red Witch when it comes to speaking on their past Nils immediately clams up. When asked about how they came to be a member of the Red Witch's crew Nils will reply with something to the effect of "I prefer to focus on the here and now". Nils has changed their appearance drastically since leaving their family, and thus there is very little for the other crew members to go on. The only hint to Nils' identity is their odd mix between La Platan and Earth accent.

x393wz.jpg

[spoiler=Background]While Nils themself is a native resident of the La Plata system they are the first generation of their family to born in the system. A family of high ranking politicians Nils' parents were sent by the OSC to be the governors of the planet Willow. Born about 15 years before the La Plata War of Independence. For the most part they were well educated, and led a rather comfortable life. However her parent's treatment of the common folk never quite sat well with Nils.

While they were never overtly affectionate towards Nils was treated, for the most part, quite well by their parents. Nils was a good, obedient child never standing up against their parents and what they believed to be wrong. However that ended when Nils began to explore their own identity. Unfortunately it appeared a child who did not wish to provide them with a grandchild, or chose to express themselves in such an odd way did not fit into the equation Nils' parents had thought up for their child.

Nils' parents tried all manner of methods to convert Nils "back to normal". However Nils did not have to endure their parents' abuse for long. It was around this time when the La Platan War of Independence erupted into full force, and Nils' parents decided to evacuate from the plant's surface until OEC had effectively put down the rebellion. However as their ship was taking off Nils stole an OEC space suit and sidearm and jettisoned an escape pod fleeing to Willow's surface.

After fleeing Nils began living as a hermit staying away from the heavily populated areas for the most part just in case their parents attempted to retrieve them. However this life style also required that Nils learned how to become self-sufficient and gain survival skills fast. Thankfully as Willow is one of the more forgiving and arable planets in the La Platan system this did not prove to be all that much of a challenge. To support themselves and pay for things they couldn't make themselves Nils became a scavenger going and tearing apart wrecked ships from the war for parts that could be sold.

It was around this time that Nils was "adopted" in the Red Dust Scrap and Salvage Corporation, and it has not been a decision Nils has regretted since. Since joining the crew Nils has formed a bond with others closer than other they've ever had, and considers the Crew of the Red Witch to be the family they never had.

Combat Information:

Weapons:

  • OEC Semi-Automatic Pistol - A standard issue weapon among the OEC. A high quality, and a hard to find weapon. A 7 round magazine, its bullets are strong enough pierce moderately thick armour. The pistol has fair range, and good control. Nils keeps two extra magazine's on their person during missions.
  • Vibration Blade - A scavenger's knife that Nils primarily uses when scavenging old wrecks for parts. By powering it on the weapon's blade vibrates fast enough to cut through even the toughest steels. These are mostly useful for dissecting particularly sensitive pieces of equipment. While not really designed for combat in close quarters situations it can be used in a pinch. Nils owns a pair of these.

x393wz.jpg

Inventory:

  • Earpiece - For communicating with other members of the Red Witch crew.
  • Tablet and Computers - Nils keeps a tablet on themself to record data gathered during expeditions such as type of parts, supplies, or materials found in locations the crew explores. Upon returning to the Red Witch Nils will transfer the data back into their computers to further analyze it. The tablet is also useful for hacking old electronic locks that crew's demolitionist can't use brute force to get through.
  • Tool Belt - A belt in which Nils keeps all the tools they need during expeditions such as lock picks, repair tools, and some spare parts. They also keep two spare magazines for their pistols and their tablet in pack attached to the back of the belt. Nils has also modified the belt with two metal half spheres at their hips with powered grappling hooks that Nils can use to reach high places.
  • Canisters and Crates - During missions the crew will often find things that need to be transported back to the Red Witch. A few of the smaller canisters are able to be carried easily or attached to Nils' tool belt, however the bigger crates have short range anti-gravity technology so that they can be easily pushed around.
  • OEC Space Suit - A stolen OEC space suit that Nils wears during missions in areas with a less than hospitable atmosphere. The hands and feet of the suit are able to magnetize. However the most important part of the suit, in Nils' eyes at least, is the helmet which has the ability to scan the immediate area around Nils and analyze plant and animal life, air and soil contents, and other important ecological information. The helmet no living things such as machines and provide read outs on important information like the metallic make-up or blue-prints. This information is all drawn from the OEC database.
  • Sewing Kit and Art Supplies - Nils' keeps several spools of thread and needles in their quarters to repair the crews clothes when they get damaged during missions. They also keep a healthy supply of canvas and paints around, and during down time can often be seen painting at their easel.

x393wz.jpg

Aptitudes:

  • Mechanical Skills - Nils in their time alone on Willow became very skilled at modifying and repairing old machinery. Nils knows most old technology, especially that from around the Independence War, like the back of their hand and can assemble and disassemble it quickly and effectively. While newer technology is somewhat more difficult for Nils to figure out, though they can usually figure how it works quite quickly.
  • Computer Genius - Nils is a self-taught programmer and hacker. They are able to crack most computerized security systems, and can operate and navigate most computer systems.
  • Seamster and Crafting - Having to care for themselves for 15 years Nils quickly learned practical skills that would help them survive, and when they began getting good at it Nils began using this skill for recreation making their own clothes. Eventually Nils expanded to other arts and crafts such as making accessories, or pottery.
  • Cooking - A survival skill that over the years has developed to be quite good. Nils often doubles as the Red Witch's cook because of their skill. Nils is able to make the most out of the minimum amount of ingredients, and is somehow able to make nearly anything taste good.
  • Green Thumb - Another survival skill honed from years of living on their own Nils is quite skilled at tending for plants. Nils uses the plants they grow not only for cooking, but also for medicine (though after joining the Red Witch's crew Nils has had less use of their plants for medicine thanks to Jules) and make-up. Due to the Red Witch's cramped space they don't really have the spare room for Nils to run a green house, however they have managed to put some potted flowers around as decoration. This skill comes in handy most when the Red Witch is staying in one place for an extended period of time, so Nils will plant a garden for food.
  • Artistic Talent - Spending 15 years alone on a post war plant is bound to get boring at some time, so to pass said time Nils began to take up drawing and painting. Nils' favorite pastime is actually sketching their crewmates while they're working either during missions or around the Red Witch.

Trivia:

  • Nils' Theme - ???
  • Nils has no preference in pronouns and doesn't really care whether people call them he or she since they don't really have a defined gender identity.
  • Nils is not their birth name. After fleeing from their parents, along with extensive cosmetic surgery, Nils changed their name so as not to be found out in case their parents ever came looking. They have not shared this fact with the crew.
  • Nils' got their last name from one of the first ships they scavenged. It was a particularly successful job, and Nils thought the name sounded nice so they took it as their own.
  • However along the same vein Nils' biological sex is not clear either, and they won't allow anyone to see them naked to figure it out. While you can see what appears to be budding breasts when Nils is in their space suit due to the amount of surgery Nils has had it's really no indication.
  • While Nils' identifies as asexual they are not opposed to having a romantic relationship. They tend to prefer males more, however Nils has had a few lady crushes before as well.
  • An avid animal lover Nils has tried several times before to try and convince Hanna to allow them to bring some sort of pet (usually part of the exotic wild life) on board the ship. However they have yet to succeed.
  • While Nils loves animals more than life itself they have an intense aversion of bugs. They are especially afraid of arachnids.

[spoiler=Skylar "Birdie" Ryan]

b8b829b208.jpg

"Don't worry about the bullets buddy, I'll see them before you do, so just have fun!"

Name: Skylar Ryan

Epithet: "Birdie"

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Orientation: Bisexual, preferring Women.

Crew Role: The Scout

Appearance: Standing at a towering 5'5", Skylar probably won't win many height contests, and she's not likely to scare too many people with raw muscle either, weighing in at 125lbs that is cut especially lean from running and jumping as often as her job requires. Short stature aside, Skylar is quite proud of her body; she's in excellent shape, and her hourglass figure is quite flattering, even if the regulation armor seems to be getting less and less flattering by the second. Her sandy, blonde hair is usually in a fairly well tamed pony tail in order to keep from having her medium length hair from blowing all over the place; she keeps it about as neat as she can, given that trips to the hairdresser are pretty few and far between in her line of work.

When Skylar isn't in battle gear, she prefers the comfort of a tank top and loose fitting pants that keep her flexible and able to move around without being unbearably unfashionable or sweaty. Most days she's wearing a hat to keep the sun out of her eyes, but occasionally around the ship she'll let her hair down and slum it out when the down time is available. On her upper right arm is a tattoo of the Red Dust logo; a relic if nothing else, but a constant reminder of her love and dedication to the job she does every day.

Personality: Some people live their day to day lives, not even realizing the danger that surrounds them. Skylar always saw those people as the lucky ones. At least if they died, they wouldn't have thought of 14 ways they could have avoided it before it happened. Sounded peaceful. Coming at both the benefit and detriment to Skylar, she was diagnosed with Hyper-vigilance, or Hyper Observant Disorder. In a nutshell, this essentially means that Skylar is constantly on high alert, and can never come off. Before a room has even been fully stepped into, Skylar has already analyzed everything in the room for danger, and how to avoid it. It keeps her up at night, exhausts her during the day, and every action she takes has all of her person in it, because Skylar is incapable of doing anything at less than full-function.

To some people, such a diagnosis may sound like a death sentence, but not to her. Her extreme sensitivity to even average stimuli has allowed her to enjoy every aspect of life to the fullest; even when things are at their bleakest, Skylar aims to be the bright spot in the room by spreading her infectious smile, or by cracking a silly joke. The way she sees it, the only way to truly battle her internal struggle to keep from collapsing under the overbearing pressure of constant paranoia is to combat it with an equal amount of optimism. She might not love some of the things she has to do for her job, but she loves the people she works with, and would do anything to protect them. Skylar one day hopes that she can put down her gun and move far away to a peaceful corner of a small planet with a lover and endless nature; maybe then her mind can finally be put to rest.

Background: It's true, being the daughter of miners isn't exactly the most glamorous past out there, but years in the mines is what got Skylar her start, and what truly brought out the strengths of her disorder, instead of being constantly buckled under the weaknesses. Skylar's parents were both involved in the seemingly never ending mining operations that take place on Vitex's surface; her mother was a miner, a strong woman that would break her own back to bring home the bread, and her father a vitally important spotter for dangers that may arise from the mines, such as collapsing tunnels or intruder presence. Because of this, Skylar often grew up with her parents disappearing for long stretches of time; forcing her to either stay with other family or occupy herself for a quarter year waiting for mom and pop to come back. Despite being largely broken due to occupation, her family life was fairly solid, just incredibly detached. Everyone in the nuclear family loved each other to the bottoms of their hearts, but it often became too difficult to become intimate for very long, facing the continually ticking timer that was the mines being ready for exploration. This never sat well with Mrs. Ryan, in particular, and as the signs of Skylar's hyper-vigilance became more and more evident, it had become apparent to Skylar's parents that she would not only be able to contribute to mining trips, but improve upon them, as she was perhaps more observant than anyone the companies had been sending out there, even at the young age of 19. For a few years, this had been nirvana for the Ryan family; they would be able to be together for the whole year now, and Skylar had proved instantly that she was an invaluable asset to the mining corporation, not only by assisting in her father's role, but also showing signs of being able to discern when the air would be too difficult to breathe, or when the mines were exhibiting signs that they were soon becoming inhabitable by humans without proper filtration gear. Her talents earned her not only the love and trust of her coworkers, but also the moniker "Birdie", something she still goes by to this day.

Except for the one time she missed something, or, more accurately, someone. Armed conflicts were quite common on Vitex when the rewards were good, especially when it concerned Black Jack. Unfortunately for Skylar's group, this was no exception. A rival company would end up sending a small, but effective, hit squad to cleanse the mines Skylar's company inhabited, and mine the resources left over from the scrap. Skylar was good, but she was still learning how to effectively predict the oncoming signs of an intruder, and in the face of a skilled unit like the one sent, Skylar was simply no match tactically. They crept in without a sound, and opened fire into the mines without remorse. The encounter would quickly fall apart into a brutal, bloody encounter, resulting in massive casualties on either side. Skylar would end up getting hit just below her right ribs during the catastrophe; she would later wake up in a medical unit inside of a ship, only to discover that she was one of few survivors; neither of her parents had made it, and she had barely made it herself. A classy act made by an organization with no ties to the faces they sent into the eternal meat grinder that was Vitex, Skylar was bandaged up and sent out on her own with not even a "best of luck". Wounded, alone, and feeling guilty at the age of 22, Skylar did anything that could keep her mind off of things, and put food on the table. Her observational talents and reaction times led to a few armed combat jobs, something she resented, but knew she had to do. Sadly, this led to her being the people that ruined her life, more often then not, but what's a girl to do? Water and food is a hell of a lot better than being the good guy these days. Somewhere along the line, she would meet up with the faces and names that would later become the Red Dust Scrap and Salvage Corporation. It had started out as a few scavenging jobs; pretty simple all things considered. Go in, eliminate threats, take what we could, and flip it for a profit. Everybody gets water and stale bread for the week. The living spaces were too cramped, the ship was shoddy at best, the crew members were all too wound up, and the food sucked more than a black hole, but she wouldn't trade it for a single thing. She'd be the first to tell you Red Dust is the best thing that's ever happened to her.

Weapons:

  • AGM-1 Bullpup Semi-Automatic Carbine
  • Gerber Mark II Combat Fixed Knife
  • 3x M84 Stun Grenade

Inventory:

  • Vectronix Vector 23 Laser Rangefinder
  • Long Range Walkie Talkie
  • Emergency Signal Flares
  • Bird Call
  • Canteen (Preferably filled with fruit juice, but water will have to do.)
  • 1 Set of Bicycle Playing Cards
  • 1 Set of 4 Juggling Balls

Aptitudes:

  • Combat Training: A necessity of survival in her craft, Skylar is well trained in the combat situations relevant to her role in the squad, which includes, but is not limited to: close quarters combat, unarmed combat, and engagement with a rifle.

  • Hyper-vigilance: Otherwise known as Hyper Observant Disorder, Skylar reaps both the benefits and the penalties of having Hyper-vigilance, leading to a variety of skills and personality quirks, such as:

    • Eagle Eye: Skylar has incredibly good eyesight, a trait necessary for her craft, but what separates her from the average is that being so observant has led to her being able to react in under a quarter second to motion up to 75 yards away.

    • Tracker: Due to constantly scanning the area around her for any differences in existing patterns, Skylar has become adept at identifying enemy position by both physical clues and derivation.

    • Stimulated: Skylar is abnormally affected by stimuli, an unfortunate side effect of her illness, causing her to react to non threats, and metabolize things far more quickly than your average person.

  • Juggling: A little on the lighter side, Skylar likes to juggle in her spare time, and she happens to be quite good at it.

Love the "Nope." to aliens. Will certainly make things a lot simpler.

Before I start my application, can I be an android, or are applications human only? I plan on applying as the demolitionist, regardless.

Yes, androids can be crew; but I think someone's already mentioned in confidence that they're making an android app so I'd rather not have too many on the ship as players. Keep than in mind, though: ultimately up to you. ;)

[spoiler=AXLE, Demolitionist]

dVtV6Tf.jpg?1

"I’m too old for this sheet... Ha! Yeah, right!"

Name: AXLE
Epithet: “AXE”
Age: ?
Gender: “Male”
Orientation: N/A
Crew Role: The Demolitionist

Appearance: AXLE is an android, designed to look like a human, but you wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at him. He keeps himself completely covered from head to toe at almost all times, only removing clothing and equipment for maintenance purposes on either it or himself. Everything about him looks old and scavenged. A rusty, full face helmet. A dust and soot covered leather duster, strapped over military style combat armor (heavy duty, for the sake of his profession, that primarily covers his upper body and some of his lower body) and fatigues with combat boots. These, along with the smoke and steam intermittently venting from small exhaust ports on his chest and back that seems to cling to him like a fog, keep his identity and appearance hidden.

AXLE has a very large stature, standing at exactly 200 cm tall and weighing over 130 kg from his mechanical body and heavy armor combined. He carries various pouches and containers strapped around his waist and legs, carrying the tools of his trade. Around his neck he wears rusted and misshapen dog tags, but any form of information that could be gleaned from them is worn and illegible.

Background: AXLE doesn’t remember anything far into his past. If you managed to clean the rust from his chassis and get ahold of his model number, nothing would come of it. He’s a very old model of android, and the company that manufactured him has long seen gone out of business. His memory of the past is akin to a hard drive that’s gone far too long without defragging, and he can only remember scarce bits and pieces.

Without a past and feeling of purpose, AXLE spent much of his time moving from battlefield to battlefield doing mercenary work as a combat engineer, oftentimes finding himself in the employment of the OEC. Part of him wished to find death, or the closest thing androids have to death, but he still refused to go down without a fight, and so death never came. Not everyone he met was very keen on an android mercenary going around doing as he pleased, so he eventually got into the habit of keeping himself covered.

One day, AXLE found himself on the losing side of a battle, separated from all of his allies by distance or death. Lost on the battlefield, the sounds of battle slowly fading behind him as he walked, AXLE was slowly losing power from a damaged power source. When he had resigned himself to his fate, he came across an old freight ship, half buried in the earth. As he absentmindedly brushed away a layer of dirt, he uncovered a logo on the ship’s hull, the same logo that resides on his chassis, that of the company that created him. Scavenging inside, he found a treasure trove of spare parts and materials. Nothing that could fix his addled mind, to his dismay, but certainly enough to repair his broken power source to keep him alive, and then some.

It was then that he devised a new purpose: Search the galaxy for any trace of his late creators in order to repair his mind and regain his past. With an old duster he scavenged from the ship’s living quarters and a pack full of spare parts, AXLE disappeared from the battlefield, and he eventually found himself in the company of the crew of the Red Witch.

Personality: Even an AI has feelings of a sort. AXLE can simulate happiness, anger, fear, any of the emotions of a normal person as they would occur. In the past this allowed him to disguise his android nature, but as time passed after leaving his mercenary work behind he began to care less and less of what others thought of him. Now to him it doesn’t matter whether people treat him as an android or a human (the crew of the Red Witch never seemed to mind one way or the other). Though he still decides to keep himself covered, and if one were to ask why, he’d say something like, “I’ve been around a long time, made a lotta repairs. You could say I’m like a robotic Frankenstein’s monster, it ain’t exactly pretty. Sometimes I feel like I’m a bucket o’ bolts held together by duct tape, and if you peeled it away all o’ me would come pourin’ out.”

While an android can never truly grow old, AXLE’s mindset is still that of an older generation. He’s grown more laid back over the years, and despite his explosive profession he himself is not as explosive as he once was back when he was a young buck, so to speak. But he still enjoys his work, sometimes a bit too much. He treats each explosion like its own form of art, appreciating the slight nuances of each one, though this causes distraction on occasion.

When it comes to dealing with others, AXLE is patient and light-hearted. Never quick to anger, but he’s not afraid to pull out his “grumpy old man” card, even if it’s in jest a lot of the time. He’s also very protective of those around him. He’s seen too many comrades die on the battlefield, even as a freelance mercenary who never stayed in one place for long enough to build many bonds, and would like to keep it from happening again. Spending time with friends has made him more jovial and boisterous than in the past, as well.

Weapons:

  • Gáe Bolg: An amalgamation of a weapon put together by AXLE himself (it appears much more rustic and haphazard than the image portrays), this behemoth of a weapon has a variety of uses, though its size and weight (equivalent of a large minigun, weighs approximately 100 kg) also makes it cumbersome. In addition to its large blade for CQC, the front barrel contains a single-shot, anti-vehicle mortar that must be manually loaded (AXLE tries to maintain 3 of them on his person during every excursion, any more would put too much strain on the weapon without maintenance in between) as well as a gun barrel for machine gun fire. However, in part due to its DIY design, it requires a lot of maintenance and can falter at the worst of times.
  • Hand Axe explosives: A type of plastic explosive similar to C4, AXLE carries an undisclosed amount on his person at all times.

Inventory:

  • pack of spare parts
  • 2 rolls of duct tape

Aptitudes:

  • Mechanical Body: Being an android, AXLE does not require things human need to survive such as air, sleep, or food and water, instead requiring standard maintenance and upkeep required of an android. He is both more durable and physically stronger than normal humans. In addition, he has a number of special functions.
  • Enhanced Vision: AXLE has access to a variety of vision enhancements, such as night vision, infrared vision, magnification, and x-ray vision.
  • Built-In Devices: Many convenient devices are built into AXLE's body, such as a communicator, camera, and defibrillator.
  • Database: During his creation, a multitude of information was programmed into AXLE's brain. While his memory issues have affected this somewhat, he still retains knowledge of things such as fluency in multiple languages, electronics skills, and botany. But don't ask him to help with your math homework.

[spoiler=Hanna Tam, Commander]

zNJGntO.jpg

“I’m a scrapper. Not a bounty hunter anymore. I rustle things that don’t rustle me back.”

Name: Hanna Tam (탄하나, 彈荷娜, Tam Ha-Na).

Epithet: None.

Age: 33.

Gender: Female.

Orientation: Undisclosed.

Crew Role: The Commander.

Appearance: Hanna stands at only 5’7” (170 cm), which is still decently tall for her ethnic background, and her weight is somewhere around ‘none of your business.’ She has a soldier’s build, with thick legs, a stable core and sinewy arms - and a bust that she jokingly calls “a complete tragedy.” Her features pin her as Korean, with almond-shaped eyes and straight black hair that is cut short for ease of wear. (Hanna does have some other ethnicities in her blood, mainly Brazilian - which explains her darker skin.) Her most noticeable feature is a large irezumi-style sleeve tattoo, wrapping around her right forearm. It depicts plum blossoms and other flowers in brilliant color - Hanna’s proud of her body art, and whenever there’s an opportunity she’ll get any fading touched up.

The commander’s preferred clothing style is no-frills. Her standard outfit consists of a beaten and worn OEC flight jacket (ultralight for hot environments); a white cotton T-shirt, a pair of navy tights that are reinforced with Kevlar despite their lightness; and a set of steel-toed combat boots. Hanna’s right knee was busted in a training exercise a number of years ago and never healed properly, so she’s taken to wearing a discreet knee brace. Even still, the joint clicking can still be faintly heard when she walks.

Personality: Hanna is by no means a shrinking violet. As an ex-OEC operative with a decent amount of leadership experience under his belt, it’s not common for her to hold back in her daily life. She’s mastered the “bark of authority” that indicates she wants everyone to shut up and listen, and she’s not hesitant to use it. At the same time, Hanna is brassy and confident, almost excessively so. She asserts her opinions without worrying of consequences - having graduated at the top of her class gave her the self-perceived right to brag about her skills. She doesn’t lack seriousness, though: when circumstances get heated, Hanna knows when to shut her trap and order people most effectively.

That doesn’t mean the commander is always all business, though. She has a lighter side to her, with a dry sense of humor and a heavy reliance on sardonicism. This can come off as annoying, particularly if she doesn’t manage to read the mood properly; but it’s something that Hanna doesn’t let bother her. Her irreverence towards authority was one of the reasons she left the OEC, and borders almost on callousness. She is also an inveterate flirt, hitting on anyone (of either gender) who is single and that she feels like she’d have a chance with. While she’s recently tried to step back from this bad habit, frankly Hanna believes that life’s too short to throw away opportunities. After defecting from the OEC, she spent a year or two jumping around the galaxy doing odd jobs before founding Red Dust; and in that time she’s picked up a myriad of unusual skills. This is also a contribution to why she’s so gung-ho about the whole operation: Hanna simply doesn’t want to live a life of regretting.

Background: It’s first important to note that Hanna Tam, for the vast portion of her life, didn’t go by that name. The identity she goes under is assumed: only a few of her closest confidants know her true identity and backstory.

Unlike most of her crew - or what she’d make you want to believe - Seongju Hwa wasn’t born in the La Plata system, but rather on the federation’s capital, the space station Pax Universalis. Her parents were both low-level bureaucrats representing interests of the United Koreas, the love between them blossoming during their appointment. When Seongju was born, her parents were ready to press her into service of the OEF, by one mean or another. They enlisted her in a military academy at an early age. While many would expect a child forced into such a circumstance to be ornery, Hanna took to military life swimmingly. She was a natural in many aspects, and her primary teachers believed that she would test into the field command track come that time.

These predictions were true. She was accepted into the academy’s field command department, which was responsible for training squad leaders to take out into field combat. Although Seongju continued to excel in this area, something started to nag at her. She respected the desires of her parents and saw the goals of the OEC as real, but each time a news article came up about how the most recent protest against their presence was quickly put down, her views wavered. Even though she had the respect of her platoon, Seongju became disillusioned with the bureaucracy that she was feeling more and more pressure from. Eventually, the tides turned when her platoon was sent out to put down a miner’s strike that had gotten ugly, and had turned into a full-fledged battle. Seeing nonviolent people being gunned down by those who were just “following orders” made something snap. She had to get out.

In the thick of the firefight, she swapped the identification on a similar corpse, smashed the face to indistinguishability, then fled across the Vitex desert. Once arriving at a major settlement with nothing but the “salvaged” flight jacket on her back, the newly minted “Hanna Tam” caught her breath and planned. Few questioned the stranger’s arrival, if any: after all, Vitex was a planet of drifters and rogues, so one more wouldn’t cause a disturbance. She chopped her hair back; got three years of ink in the span of a month; and dumped three-quarters her life savings into buying a rust bucket of a freighter and making her space worthy. An alias was slowly coming to form.

The Red Witch, as the ship would be called, would soon become the center of Hanna’s life; and she was able to assemble a crew of like-minded individuals from among those who were left behind in the refuse of La Plata. Now, people know her as an ex-mercenary, who finally decided to settle down and operate a business that didn’t involve firing a gun 24/7 (well, maybe 3/7 now). Life’s not as regimented, and there are weeks in which the only things to eat are rations and cheap soju, but Hanna finally feels just a bit liberated. And she’s never been happier.

Weapons:

  • 1x Quicksilver Industries ‘Armadillo’ 12-Gauge Shotgun: Quicksilver is Hanna’s preferred gun manufacturer. For her, there’s nothing more satisfying than the pump action of a shotgun, so this is her baby. She doesn’t carry it at all times, but when she does it is slung on a harness that hangs about her back. Hanna tends to only use it when she intends to kill.
  • 1x Quicksilver Industries ‘Civet’ Pistol: The Civet is Hanna’s backup piece: unlike Armadillo, she always keeps it on hand when off the ship, in a thigh holster.
  • 3x Quicksilver Industries ‘Cnidaria’ Pulse Grenades (second row on the right): These release a powerful electromagnetic pulse when detonated, which while dealing only minor damage to biological systems can take wreck any electronics caught in the blast.
  • 1x Folding Field Knife: Generic brand, but still durable. Used for cutting wire - or anything else in her way.
Inventory:
  • Extra slugs and ammo, carried in a hip pouch.
  • Reinforced nalgene water flask.
  • Earpiece and transponder for field communication with team.
  • Bag of fruit gummies - her personal vice.
Aptitudes:
  • Advanced Military Training: Hanna’s previous commandership was not given for no reason. She’s an exemplar of what it means to be a soldier; and even though she now exists outside of the chain of command, her skills have not grown soft.
  • Sharpshooting: Hanna has demonstrated exemplary skill with a sighted shotgun, able to hit moving targets at upwards of 50 meters. Due to the heavy damage a shotgun slug can inflict, once someone’s in her sights, they rarely leave.
  • Close-Quarters Combat: That doesn’t mean she can’t handle herself up close, though. Hanna was trained in a variant of krav maga and is very proficient therein: she can defend herself just as easily as she is able to go on the offense.
  • Natural Leader: Her skills were acknowledged early on, and since then Hanna’s leadership qualities have only improved. She knows a good deal about the psychology of leadership and effective methods, and also knows how to choose the right words to convince someone to join her side.
  • Card Shark: Hanna also loves herself some five-card stud. She and Birdie can often be found playing cards well into the wee hours of the morning, over soju and rice snacks.

[spoiler=The Tostensson Twins]

Screen_Shot_2016_06_15_at_12_26_36_AM.pn

"Mennään!"

Name: Kyy Tostensson and Kokko Tostensson

Epithet: The Dnieper Airmen

Age: Both are 26.

Gender: Males.

Orientation: Kyy is straight. Kokko might be bi, but refuses to talk about it.

Crew Role: Kyy is The Pilot and The Navigator of the Red Witch, while Kokko is her Mechanic and Engineer. They both are able to operate the ship turret should they need to.

[spoiler=For Whole Reference]

toned_down_shit.jpg

Appearance: Youthful and spritely young men, given an appearance of great youth due to the application of a lot of makeup and body training; it's what the ladies love, after all. Their unnecessarily flashy getup's are remnants of their old careers, covered in bright colors and flashy shapes. Not exactly combat-ready, but they aren't supposed to face combat anyway.

Upon first seeing them, the thing that stands out the most depends on the person; to some, their piercing bright green eyes would draw attention, with a few of the more superstitious folk fearing they'd suck out their soul. Others notice their orangeish-brown hair, clearly well taken care of and just short of being considered long. But for the vast majority, they'd notice the extravagant flight suits they wore nearly all the time, and have many copies of; Kyy cites this to them being comfortable, but Kokko admits they're just stingy, and this is all they have. Kyy's suit is colored teal, with pink highlights, while Kokko's is colored pink, with teal highlights; many people use this as the sole distinction to tell them apart.

Of the design decisions made when designing the suits, only the sleeveless arms came as a result of practicality; the humid weather of Willow has many of its occupants go sleeveless to let the air flow. But other than that, the entire outfit was designed solely with visual flair in mind, from this colorful shoes to the waist-height belt straps that flap around in the wind, bearing a resemblance to styles back in the home sector of humanity.

Being twins, they are practically the same in every way, save for a few key differences; both are 5'8" in height, with very light skin owing to their parents ethnicity, with their aforementioned green eyes and orangeish-brown hair to top it all off; their naturally flashy appearance practically ensured them a role in showbiz. While they are both suitably toned and strong, enough to get the job done, Kokko has more muscle mass than Kyy simply due to the difference in their roles. As such, Kokko weighs a bit more than Kyy, coming in at 169lb as opposed to Kyy's 161lb.

Personality: Kyy and Kokko are showmen, through and through. They have loud, active voices, and are well animated when speaking to others; charismatic, some might say. They are very positive individuals, as one needs to be when facing the everyday potential of death in airshows and salvaging missions alike; should they be bogged down by the realities of life, they'd never make good airmen. While some may see their demeanor as exuding positive confidence, others might see it as extreme cockiness, with a hint of smugness; and they aren't entirely off in their judgement.

In fact, many see them as insufferably smug and confident, with them being so to the point where even if they clearly can't do something, they'll claim they can and attempt to. This often places them or others in great peril, with overconfidence causing their great downfall to begin with. However, this acts as a sort of duel-edged sword, as they have been able to accomplish feats no one thought possible through their foolish bravado. Aside from this, they are pleasant people to be around. Joyful, talkative, and willing to make peace with those who cross them for whatever reason, sometimes at simply the drop of a hat.

Twins they may be, they do have their distinct differences. With his pilot role, Kyy tends to introduce himself first, and is more proactive in conversations, with Kokko preferring to sit back and follow his lead should the time come. Kokko is also more secretive than the relative open book that is Kyy, with him having many quirks that he refuses to share the origin of with others. Even Kyy doesn't know some of them. Despite having been together for the entirety of their lives, they don't appear to even be a little sick of each other, though they aren't without the occasional scuffle.

Background: In a Willow backwater, in a misty valley with a small running stream, lived a small family of extrasystem immigrants who ran a small, meager farm. It's not much, and doesn't bring in very much money, but it provides for them, and that's all they could ask for. It is here that Mr. and Mrs. Tostensson had their two, lively twins: Kyy and Kokko.

Growing up on the farm was not what any reasonable person would call "exciting;" days were bright and early, the work was rough, and education was fairly limited, as extra money was not something the Tostensson's had much access too. Regardless, at the same time, there wasn't much to complain about either. With full bellies and an entire valley to explore around, the twins managed to keep themselves busy in the times they weren't helping the farm. They were taught manners by their mother, they were taught how to do house and fieldwork by their father, and both contributed to helping them learn how to read and write. A comfortable existence.

Regardless, in the back of their minds, Mr. and Mrs. Tostensson didn't want their two youngsters to forever live on the farm; they dreamt of successful businessmen, charismatic inventors, or sterling starpilots. And if any of these were going to be achieved, they had to do one thing: get off the farm.

Baby steps, of course. On one cool summer day, after all crops were dusted and tended to, Mr. Tostensson piled his eager and curious twins into their 4x4 and took off down the valley. After several hours of traveling, with the twins enamored by scenes and scenery they had never seen before, they approached the nearest big city, with sprawling suburbs and towering spires unlike anything the twins had ever seen before. And this wasn't even the half of it; deep within the heart of the city lay its spaceport, an enormous complex of towers, spaceships, and landing pads that went for miles.

This was the only spark they needed.

By the time they were both 16, neither had actually left the farm yet for any particular career. However, whilst growing up, they had both fallen into their prospective interests. Kyy, inspired by the sight of massive starships soaring throughout the sky, volunteered with his father to pilot his small crop-dusting hovercraft, learning to pilot it with a great deal of proficiency and skill. Kokko, on the other hand, was similarly inspired by the starships he saw, but rather than dreaming about piloting them, he became very interested in the how behind these spaceships. From then on, he often spent his alone time in the farm's machine shop, often helping his mother with different fixes, or in maintaining their duster.

This continued for sometime, until the war happened. A quick and brutal conflict, their homestead was caught in the middle of a battle, and was utterly destroyed during this time. This came as an extreme shock to the twins' parents, who, after a small discussion, with a hug, a kiss, and a small handful of money, took the first available spacecraft back to their home planet, wishing not to die away from it.

The war ended soon after, but the twins found themselves without a home, without support from parents, and very little practical skill to give themselves a career. They might've died in this state had they not been picked up by a seemingly virtuous traveling performer, who did aerobatic demonstrations in spacecraft for the backwater residents of Willow. It was here that they found their ultimate niche:

Showbiz!

Years later, and the small little troupe of performers they had once known had grown into something substantial, now performing across different worlds for audiences numbering in the thousands. The two newbies, with a positive demeanor, natural good looks, and high charisma, all with great piloting skills to back them up, quickly became the headline act for the group, placing their official headquarters in Willow's Dnieper River Valley. It was here that Kyy and Kokko had refined their skills to a pinpoint, with Kyy becoming an expert pilot and great showman, while Kokko became extremely proficient at repair and maintenance, becoming one of the top engineers in the group.

From here on, it seemed like their life was set; they had successful careers, money to throw around, and adoring fans all over...

Had they not been so overconfident.

A particularly wealthy businessman approached the troupe one day, hoping to use the successful Dnieper Airmen to advertise a new class of civilian luxury ship. He wanted them to use it in an act, showing how versatile and powerful it is, while giving it their "verbal support." Despite the objections of other troupe members objections, they took up the job.

Kyy had never piloted something of such massive size before, being almost one hundred meters long, nor had Kokko ever maintained something of such size. Unable to keep up with the demands of the vessel, disaster had soon struck. A mere thiry-five seconds into their routine, after a nearly half-hour of pre-show advertising surrounding the ship, Kyy found himself unable to control the vessel's huge size, and Kokko was still sifting through the instruction manual.

The crowd watched in horror as an escape pod jettisoned from the craft, as the vessel lost all control and slammed into the valley wall of the Dnieper River Valley. A vessel that cost more than all the money the twins had ever made, setting ablaze any chance of the ship-class ever becoming a commercial success.

Needless to say, the twins never showed up to pick up their check for the show.

Without a career, without a ship, and on the run from those who wished to collect the debt they owed, they made way for Vitex with what little pocket money they had left, hoping to blend in to the busy mining season to disappear from the radar of their pursuers. It was here that they had their fateful encounter with a certain commander of a certain ship...

Weapons:

-Kyy uses the M7E3 Bridge Defense SMG, loaded with a 20-round mag that fires .45 ACP. While it lacks in range and accuracy, it makes up for it with close-range stopping power, which is needed when fighting onboard ships.

-Kokko absolutely refuses to use firearms, instead fashioning a kind of hatchet out of a multitool he uses during maintenance. He doesn't plan on getting into fights anyway. He refuses to mention how often he has cut himself while working with it, but by the loss of bandaids on-board, it's probably quite often.

Inventory:

They both have headsets that act as communicators, letting them talk even if separated throughout the ship, as well as contact the rest of the crew. Besides that, Kyy has the keylog startup for the ship and a starmap for navigation, and Kokko has a vast variety of different engineering tools to help him.

Aptitudes:

Kyy:

-Sharpened Spatial Awareness: Capable of squeezing a 20 meter wide starship through a 21 meter hole without a scratch.

-Skilled Pilot: Capable of maneuvering his ship in ways even Kokko is surprised with.

-Practiced Navigator: Still learning, but is quite capable of charting safe and fast routes throughout the system.

-Skilled Performer: With a wide smile and a charismatic persona, he carries himself quite well.

Kokko:

-Practiced Mechanic: With a schematic list and enough time, there isn't much on-board that he can't fix.

-Skilled Engineer: Able to squeeze performance out of almost anything, via several less-than sanctioned engineering shortcuts.

-Practiced with Tools: Having used them most of his life, he can handle his gear quite well, perhaps beyond proficiently.

-Skilled Performer: See above.

done! I hope probably

[spoiler=Caelam WIP]

76Xi5ou.jpg?1

"And so, thus my story starts anew."

Name: Caelam Angelucci

Epithet: Secret Emperor

Age: 38, looks younger due to several plastic surgeries

Gender: Male

Orientation: Mostly gay, with some bi leaning. Actual romancing is not something he thought of often, tho.

Crew Role: Salvage Technician

Appearance:At 173 centimeters tall, Caelam is a man of somewhat lower than average height. So much that he actually looks like a teenager half his age. He intentionally tries his best to look as unnoticeable in a crowd as possible, although that doesn’t apply to his hat nor his hair color, which definitely has a good chance to stand out, with it being a wide cowboy-like hat adorned with…whatever he is in the mood with, as he often decorates it with food of any kind. Perhaps his deep red natural eye color would stand out too, but with how many people engineered their appearance to look outlandish, it ends up looking pretty normal.

His haircut supports his teenage boy-like look too. It’s a short, slightly messy cut, and it also has a wild strand of the so-called idiot hair near the front, usually not obscured by his hat. At times he can’t really decide whether his hair is supposed to be blue or cyan-colored, but for the most part he believes that it’s supposed to be blue. As it has been said, he does intentionally cultivate the look of a boy or a younger man, and it shows. His build looks quite scrawny, but his muscles are quite compact, and beyond his clothes he’s actually pretty well-built.

While he changes his clothes often and usually would wears a short-sleeved buttoned white shirt with a red tie on his neck. He wears what looked like a patterned white apron with rainbow-shaped edges over his long, black pants, and he always wear a pair of brown, all terrain shoes for his operations.

Personality: On a glance, Caelam would seem to be quite the cheerful, enthusiastic person with a knack of thrillseeking, but this tendency often paints him as quite irresponsible. While kind in intent usually, he’s rash and can be unintentionally rude to others, and often assumes things a bit too early and acts on that assumption.

Granted, the above is just what the image he’s trying to cultivate based on his leanings. When necessary, he’s very capable to methodically respond to situations and generally shows a degree of competence that would be quite unexpected from the surface image people have on him.

Even then, he still pretty much prefers to be seen as the rash, inexperienced rookie instead of who he really is. He’s starting a new life, after all.

Background: Caelam was actually born outside of the La Plata system. He was born in a space colony as the sole son of two researchers. The family lived a happy life until his parents ended up getting the order to move to Acacia to research the poison there due to the rumor of its potential health benefit if processed. They boarded a ship belonging to the OEC to go there, but it was caught under fire from a local independence movement and Caelam ended up being sold to pirates. Serving as an errand boy for years, he nevertheless managed to get close to the other kids that were being employed there, and after some years they planned a rebellion, which ended up being successful. Caelam then was elected to lead the group by the other kids.

Years following it was rough, but being an opportunist in seeking prey allowed the group to slowly gain power and influence, and just within six years after the takeover, the Cheolkkoch group ended up managing to establish a substantial influence in the lawless parts of Vitex. The rag tag gang ended up being more and more organized, and they ended up taking more and more of mafia-like characteristics as year passed, whether in their operation or their way of handling things internally. All of this was with Caelam headlining the company, but after a while his ruthless side ended up causing the same people that he used to be able to rally as a group to his enemies, and he ended up being deposed in a bloody coup. He managed to survive however, and he ran away to Willow, where he managed to get himself a total makeover surgery and start his life anew.

Weapons:

  • Custom-built Plasma Cutter
  • Various explosives
  • Customized Semi-automatic Staple Gun
  • Standard Issue Handgun and Shotgun

Inventory:

  • Reinforced Lunch Box and Water Flask
  • Earpiece
  • Flares
  • Physical notes containing coded scribbles
  • Music player

Aptitudes:

  • Junk Appraisal: Ability to predict the rough worth of a salvaged object after some examination.
  • Skilled Mechanic: Experienced in both dismantling and assembling pieces of technology. While his work is really rough, they're pretty effective usually.

  • Combat Skill: Being a former space pirate's not a walk in the park, and despite of him usually not showing it, he's really vicious in combat, although his style is really unrefined.

  • Analysis

  • Cooking and Arranging: Really good at cooking, and has some knack in interior decoration. His hat's everchanging (and ever-edible) decorations are a proof of this.

Still very WIP, will finish soon.
