Debates Section Rules

Trebuchet MS

Recommended Posts

The YCM Debates subforum exists to allow members free discourse on topics involving politics, ethics, religion, and other controversial issues (e.g. racism, political correctness) without disturbing the rest of the site.

What happens in Debates stays in Debates. Discussion on topics in this subforum and mentions of the happenings in this subforum are forbidden anywhere else on YCM. Entire threads may be moved here if needs be.

All YCM Rules still apply to this section; meaningless spam posts, flaming, and instances of ad hominem will still not be tolerated. While it is understandable that emotions may be roused in controversial discussions, please calm down before posting for the sake of rational and productive debate. A reminder that condescension and personal attacks are counterproductive to making others see your perspective and will only cause others to go on the defensive and become more adamant in their stance.

Now before you get your jimmies ruffled, I assure you there shouldn't be much more than this. Any questions regarding these rules should be directed to to the discussion thread, as I don't see a need to clutter this thread when there's an official discussion thread already (which can be found by clicking here). With that in mind, there are only two rules that will be implemented:

  • ) Topic Titles Should Be Clear and Concise: This means readers shouldn't have to guess what the thread is about. If the thread is in regards to "Gun Control", that is what the title should say. Misleading titles will be adjusted as necessary. If you need to rip the title from the article of discussion, that is fine also. But the title should be to the point.
  • ) Link Only Posts Should Be Consolidated: In order to maintain post quality, if you're going to only post a link, try to consolidate your single link posts into one. The Edit button is your friend. Further elaborating on links with information is a courtesy, but not a necessity. If you're asked to elaborate or explain, please do so.
  • ) Regarding Flaming: Calling someone stupid, petty, or ignorant--really anything so mild or easily disregarded--is not considered flaming. It's not encouraged, but reporting this will not result in a punishment. However, calling someone a flaming baka is totally unacceptable and will be dealt with accordingly. In addition, repeat offenders will be punished for minor incidents after two or more verbal warnings. Basically, use your best judgment.
  • Zero Tolerance:  Threads will not be allowed to devolve into senseless flaming, hate-filled rhetoric, or mud slinging.  If you cannot deconstruct an opposing argument in a civilized manner, you will be removed or punished accordingly.
