[spoiler=Plot and Setting]

The year is 540 AG.  For hundreds of thousands of years, elemental users have come naturally to the world, long after the age of the Lion-Turtle.  The Lion-Turtles--once creators and rulers of this world, are a mythical kind of creature who's control over the natural elements of the world shaped it into what it is.  Born as great spirits who wielded powerful techniques, they brought their strengths to our world.  Earth.  Wind.  Fire.  Water.  The Lion-Turtles used these elements to mold the world, and bring about their own change.

Some many millennium after the Lion-Turtle's reign, the human race was born.  The first among them was a powerful human being, receiving the gifts of the Lion-Turtles in great fashion, becoming the first of this kind to wield the Lion-Turtle's techniques masterfully.  The rest of the human race took naturally to the Lion-Turtles, changing over many centuries, until the human race was inclined and even bred to naturally take to the elemental prowess of the Lion-Turtles.  Teaching humans to control the elements, the Lion-Turtles passed their powerful techniques on to another species, in addition to other animals and naturally born beings on Earth.  These people and creatures who wield nature's elements are called benders, and they are able to freely manipulate a special element in which they are gifted, now upon birth.  Though not all persons are born as benders, they make up a great majority of the populace of the world, with entire tribes being born and created to single elements.  Some have even mastered a sub-element, mastering their birth elemental technique, and creating a vast and wide variety of uses for their bending.  The many tribes of elements that stem from the four basic elements (earth, wind, fire, and water) include but are not limited to sub-elemental types that stem from perfection of a primary element.  These sub-types are metal, lava, blood, and lightning.  However, among all of these techniques exists what is regarded as the most powerful element:  energy.  With great focus and control, it is the only element said to be able to restore life to the dead.  And only one being who is not a Lion-Turtle has the strength and means to control it.  That being is the same human that was the first of this kind to ever bend like the Lion-Turtles.  He is referred to as the Avatar.

A long line of persons both male and female stem closely from the blood of the Lion-Turtle, born solely for the purpose of keeping balance among the world as they control all the world's techniques without fail.  The Avatar--with their great power and responsibility--soon became revered as the world's savior, and regarded as the person to right all wrongs.  From Avatar Wan--the first and oldest Avatar--to the great Avatar Korra, the Avatars have for many years kept the world in harmony.  But after a long period of great peace, the Avatar has vanished.

In the mean time, bending has become the norm.  Used in restaurants for cooking and cleaning, or in classrooms for everyday studies, bending to save a few seconds of time here and there.  This quickly made the human race lazy, causing them to rely on bending so much, that it was almost unnatural to complete a task without bending.  And while the spirit world continues to feed the everyday world the necessary energies to sustain its bending, the connection between the Overworld and the Spirit World is rapidly dwindling, causing even the great Lion-turtles to fade from existence.  Because of this, the world has begun to age and fester at a rapid rate.  And with this same fading connection, bending too is in jeopardy.  Now, because of the strained connection between the Overworld and Spirit World, bending causes great strain on the body of the benders, bringing about a powerful new disease to benders everywhere:  Elemental Dystrophy.  First appearing nearly two years ago, around the end of 538 AG, Elemental Dystrohy was first discovered in a local Republic City school, called Republic City First.  An eighth grade teacher was breaking up a fight among her students, when she extended her arm to separate the students by earth bending.  But as her technique crumbled, her arm became numb, and slowly began to lose color before the sickening deep purple climbed through her veins, and destroyed her arms.  She was rushed to Republic City Medical.  Initially she survived, but the disease had already begun to spread throughout her body.  She was dead in three months time.

Over time, as humans continued to rely so heavily on the art of bending, they lost touch with hand work, labor, and sciences.  Benders began to struggle with even the simplest of bending techniques, because they were not taught the proper way to bend.  In this time, elemental Dystrophy has caused the deaths of hundreds of people in Republic City alone.  Now, cities and countries around the globe are seeing and feeling the effects of Elemental Dystrophy in full force.

E.D. is believed to be caused when a bender improperly uses a bending technique, resulting in extreme strain on their bodies.  Most commonly, a severe, sharp pain in the bender's feet and legs will be the first sign, as a deep shade of purple etches its way up the bender's body from their soles.  They appear to drain of color, until their feet and legs begin to wither and die from the inside out.  Their muscles and tendons begin to rapidly decay, until eventually they lose all use of the limb, as E.D. spreads throughout their body.  And while some benders have escaped only losing their fingers or toes, there has yet to be a discovery of a cure for Elemental Dystrophy.  In addition, due to the precarious make-up of a bender's blood, attempts to perform surgery on patients with E.D. has resulted in catastrophe.  As E.D. is now known to go as far as affecting the blood of benders, when combined with their own elemental affinity, a toxic waste would seep through open wounds and eat away at anything it touches.  Often times, this has resulted in a swift death for those afflicted, placing doctors in an impossible predicament.

To make matters worse, current bending techniques have been rendered ineffective against E.D.  It has become a task for those who are not gifted with bending techniques to find a cure.  And though most herbal medicines and techniques have been useless against fighting E.D., some breakthroughs have been made.

A privately funded medical facility has funded an inhibitor that has slowed E.D. by as long as one year.  By attaching to nerves in a bender's body and cycling blood through a filtration system, a device known as the Purification Orthro Device--or the P.O.D.--was created to aid benders and slow E.D., by doctor Erik J. Orthro.  It recycles clean blood while using the bender's natural elemental alignment as a source of pressure to keep E.D. down.  With a lack of working aid for benders afflicted with E.D. however, P.O.D.s have become unnecessarily expensive, and a single corporation is buying them all up left and right.  The conglomerate known as Trigate.

And at the head of Trigate, and being the C.E.O.'s only child, a young man with a distinct hatred for benders is using his cover as a brilliant entrepreneur's protege to wage war.  Using his nearly unlimited funds, he has dawned a mask and separated the benders from non-benders, using the rise of Elemental Dystrophy to smear the name of benders everywhere.

"That's what happens when you're a greedy, unnatural, spirit stealing pig!" he has proclaimed, under the name of N. N. Order.  "If you're not a Natty, then you'll get what's coming to you!  You'll die in the name of our world!  And you'll return those techniques, back to the spirit world!"  Referring to natural born humans without an elemental affinity as 'Naturals' or 'Nattys', N. N. Order seeks to divide benders and non-benders, separating them and generating chaos, and fuel for the fire.

But not every non-bender will willingly and recklessly feud with benders.  In fact, a small number of them have joined Dr. Orthro in finding ways to not only slow E.D., but join benders in looking for a cure.  Eight persons, unknown and unnamed, have rallied behind a local mechanic by his sheer magnetism and desire to aid his own people.  Using a device called the Single Elemental Discharge Glove, these six natural humans have been gifted a single element to bend by Doctor Orthro, in order to help the benders fight back against Elemental Dystrophy.  And with a member of the Republic City council on their side, they have some leeway in this world.

But before they can change anything for the better, they have to first understand what it means to bend.  And they're about to get a taste of bending for the first time, right now.  Natty's were recently spotted assaulting a group of young benders near the outgrowth of spirit vines in Downtown Republic City.  By order of Council Member Jasper Janook, they're being sent on their first official mission as a privately controlled organization to combat Nattys, while searching for a cure for Elemental Dystrophy.

"Go.  Dispel these. . .Nattys, while we continue our work here.  After hundreds of years of searching, the Council firmly believes we've found traces as to where the--"

"Don't say it," exclaims a man from the group of newly created benders.  His fully metal right arm was heavily detailed, pumping with gears, hissing steam into the air as he balled his fist.  "We don't talk about the Avatar.  Period," he said aggressively, stepping forwards as he berated Councilman Janook.  "You recruited us for this.  We'll do this our own way.  The rest of you benders," he said not looking over his shoulder.  "Keep looking for your ghost.  I'm gonna go find a solution."  With those words, Udal Cho turned his back to the Councilman, and disappeared into a dark staircase as he headed for the ground floor of Republic City, seven other comrades in tow.

[spoiler=Database]

  • Elemental Dystrophy - A powerful disease caused by putting too much stress on the body through elemental bending.  Symptoms include weakened bending, headaches when elemental bending, and jagged purple scars running over the surface of the skin where veins would be.  The pain is very intense, and the first muscles in the body that usually begin to waste away, begin in the ankles and feet.  Elemental Dystrophy is classified as a disease, and is not contagious.  It causes the blood of the effected bender to change color from red to purple, almost as if they are starved of oxygen.  The blood becomes extremely toxic, and when exposed to air, ignites in flame.
  • Technology is very stagnant.  It had become forsaken in favor of bending, and is not very common.  Mechanics are a rare sight, and things like radios and satellites are valued highly.
  • The Avatar is no where to be found.  Adventurers have scoured the world for more than two hundred years, and have not found the Avatar.
  • Benders are seen in a dark light, and are not widely accepted anymore.  It is because of them that the world is in chaos.
  • Udal is the only natural bender on your team.  He previously lost his arm to Elemental Dystrophy, but with a stroke of luck and quick reaction, he cut his arm off at the source of the E.D.  A bit of restructuring allowed him to keep his muscles working, but a tinge of E.D. does remain within him.  His arm is entirely mechanical, and very powerful.
  • Councilman Janook has requested your help.  He will be in touch as often as he can, for as long as he can, assuming E.D. doesn't kill him.
  • I have quite a few surprises regarding the elements, so be sure to play with them often.

[spoiler=Recent History of the Four Nations, and the Emergence of Elemental Dystrophy]

Firebending

Firebending―the pyrokinetic ability to control fire―is infamously the most aggressive of the elements. It was once met with a horrible stigma by the Earth Nation and Water Tribes, because of the atrocious crimes of war committed in the Hundred Year War. Over the years, and with the cooperation of the avatar and all three nations, the Fire Lord, Zuko, was able to rebuild the reputation of the benders of the element. The Fire Nation was the largest supporter in the effort to create the United Republic Nations, and even gave their own land as territory.

Firebending is unique amongst the bending arts, as it is the only one in which the performer doesn’t require it to be present in the area around them and can generate it themselves. It is the element that symbolizes power, and often drills lessons on complete and total self-control into the student's head because of how dangerous it can be when a bender doesn’t understand their own strength. It is chaotic, aggressive, and seeks to overwhelm opponents with an array of composed and powerful pyroblasts.

E.D. has not affected the Fire Nation in number anymore than any other nation, but in spirit it has devastated them. The Fire Lord, Baa-fun, was one of the first to fall sick when E.D. began to spread, but didn’t let even his wife and son know until it had become severe and the best Water Tribe healers couldn’t save him. Even then, he kept it between his friends and family, saying his goodbyes and making arrangements. The Fire Nation didn’t realize anything was wrong with their beloved leader until his death was announced, and his son was put upon the throne.

Special techniques:

  • Lightning generation
  • Lightning redirection
  • Combustion bending

Learned from:

  • Dragons

Airbending

Airbendingthe aerokinetic ability to control airis notable for being the most defensive of all the elements. It was originally used by the Air Nomads, and was once almost lost to the world during the Hundred Year War, but due to the efforts of Avatar Aang and his descendants has slowly grown to its former glory. It is still among the rarest of the elements.

The teaching of the Air Nomads was among the most spiritual of all the nations, and that is still true now. Almost all experienced airbenders are very passive and unusually calm, seemingly unphased by the troubles besetting the rest of the world and the voice of reason among the gathered benders. Regardless, even the airbenders agree that E.D.’s not a problem that can be ignored, but most of them believe that the answer is within the spiritual side of bending.

The key to airbending is flexibility and following the path of least resistance. They are loose in their stance, similar to the wind itself, and their style involves constantly moving in circles around an opponent, evading rather than simply striking them down.

Special techniques:

  • Flight
  • Spiritual Projection

Learned from:

  • Flying Bison

Waterbending

Waterbendingthe hydrokinetic ability to control water―is the element of change. It was used by the Northern Water Tribe and Southern Water Tribe prevalently, though a few centuries ago the Foggy Swamp Tribe was discovered by Avatar Aang and his companions. Each of the three tribes have drastically different methods, and a seasoned bender could discern where a waterbender studied just by watching the way they bend.

Watching a waterbender in action is very similar to a dance. They flow seamlessly from offense to defense, and one of the most ancient techniques is simply allowing their defense to become their offense. They can be very unruly in a battle as well, shifting from water to ice at a moment's notice,  forcing an opponent to stay on their toes if they are going to defeat them. Most waterbenders are taught restraint and discipline, and have a very composed manner in everyday life because of their training.

Of the four elements, waterbending is the most spiritual. This has little to do with their teaching, and unlike most of the Air Nomads they do not teach of the spirit in all things, but it is because they are the only element that wasn’t a technique learned from an animal. Waterbenders learned their trade by studying the moon, and they’re thoroughly tied to things like lunar phases, being at their most powerful during a full moon. Waterbenders have suffered nearly twice the casualties of other benders from the sickness of E.D. because of this, especially those who were taught by a parent or casual bender instead of the masters of the Water Tribes.

Special techniques:

  • Healing
  • Bloodbending

Learned from:

  • The Moon

Earthbending

Earthbending―the geokinetic ability to control earth and rock―is the most palpable of the four elements. It’s most commonly used by members of the Earth Kingdom, yet it possesses many branching schools and techniques. It’s an oddity to see two practitioners with the exact same style, even those taught by the same master, and one can find a thousand schools spread through the Earth Kingdom and the United Republic Nations. Earthbenders are taught the necessity of patience and endurance, and most benders are strong, resilient, and cautious.

Amongst the bending arts, earthbending requires much more physical exertion, resulting in practitioners being very physically fit and generally muscular. To defeat an opponent with earthbending is to outlast them, weathering every attack they can throw at you and then striking hard and fast when a weak point presents itself. Because of this most earthbenders become very observative, and many often choose to listen instead of speak. An onlooker wouldn’t be very captivated by an earthbender; in fights, they are like an unyielding rock atop a mountain, waiting for when the enemy is right below them to bring the avalanche down upon their head.

Earthbenders have suffered from E.D. as much as every other nation. They built their cities with earthbending, with a dozen massive stone gates and other structures that require bending to get past, yet everyone is either too afraid to bend open the gates, or have fallen sick when they have tried. Many areas have been abandoned because of the bending required to get to them, and the N. N. Order has been able to wreak havoc upon the normally impenetrable Earth Kingdom and its citizens because of this fact.

  • Sandbending
  • Metalbending

Thanks for the attention ladies and gents.  I'll go ahead and turn this into a full blown OOC.  I've updated the OP with a few minor changes, which is noted at the bottom of the post.  Please take a gander.  I'll have Udal's application at least started tonight.

I am tentatively interested. I do have some questions, particularly about the S.E.D. Glove. When you state that the individual is gifted a single bending technique, what does that fully encompass? For example, are we talking technique as in a specific move in an element(i.e. the water whip) or being able to only control that single element(i.e. some gloves can only waterbend and others can only firebend, etc)?

Also, was Korra the last Avatar to date?

Forgot to change single technique to single element. Will fix it when I'm off work. And yes, Korra is currently the last known Avatar.

[spoiler=The Resolute Runaway]

9YN0PUj.jpg
"If shaking your hand will find the cure faster, fine."

Name: Anyu

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Chosen Element S.E.D. Glove: Earth

Greatest Desire During the Quest: Learn more about the world through first-hand experience.

[spoiler=Description]Uc2ZKGn.jpg
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 138 pounds

The right word for Anyu's appearance is unimpressive. Her most impressive feature is her complexion, tanned to the general color of light coffee from long days in the sun growing up, but the rest of her appearance is generally mediocre. Her chestnut hair is short and simple, her hazel eyes aren't particularly good-looking, and her facial expressions are pretty lackluster. Even her chest has very little to be impressed by, just barely being more than a flat surface. Aside from her tanned skin tone, Anyu's most distinctive feature is the insistence of keeping a raincoat and rubber boots on her person; a small something to remember her roots by, and practical should she suddenly face problems involving water.

[spoiler=Personality]
Emotionally, Anyu can range from seemingly dead to one of the most intense people you'll likely meet. She makes generally successful attempts to distance herself from others, but will very easily grow attached to people if her guard slips for even a second. Even after she's come to like somebody, she'll try to keep her heart nice and cold, but can and most likely will fail in these cases. When she does, it's clear that she's either extremely resolute in her goals, and/or completely broken and fearing further damage, depending on who you ask. The reality of it is both. Anyu would go to any lengths to put an end to Elemental Dystrophy, but she's simply not willing to deal with any emotional stress she might encounter along the way, rather than the hands-on type of approach she usually defaults to.

Although she wants nothing but the best for everyone, bender or otherwise, Anyu gets easily distressed by waterbending. It, among other things, vividly reminds her of home, which in turn stresses her right out; in the same vein, there are a few other otherwise-innocent things that disturb her. While she can take even the harshest of insults with ease, things like "hick" or "farm girl" will hit hard and hit home. Being flat-out told to just go home will most likely set her off, and she'll make active efforts to not talk about where she's from or what her past was like, preferring not to face or even think about any problems she's had back home. Instead, she prefers to just bottle everything up, turning her into a ticking time bomb of emotion.

When she finally can't contain herself anymore, everything she's been holding in floods out of Anyu's every word and action, for better or worse. If she's happy, she'll become hopelessly friendly, optimistic, and high-spirited. If sad, she'll cry and wail uncontrollably. When angered, Anyu becomes a whirling dervish of rage who refuses to be stopped until she's worn herself out. It's often easy to tell when she's about to go off. Her facial expression will twitch and shift from its usual blank state, her voice will crack, and she'll make an active effort to isolate herself from others not only emotionally, but physically as well.

One emotion that doesn't find itself bottled up, even if it never clearly shows, is love. Platonically, it's very easy for Anyu to love others, as mentioned before, but those people mean everything to her, however many of them there may be. For every triumph, downfall, or just a simple casual event, she wants to be by their side. She wants nothing less than the very best for the people dear to her, but will still expect them to be decent people despite it. As easy as it is for Anyu to love a person, it's just as easy for her to cut off all her love for them if she finds out they aren't acting right.

What defines "right" to Anyu is based on what she was taught growing up. If a person wants something, they have to work for it; begging won't do anything for you, or if it does, you'll be in hot water for the next thing you have to get done. Aside from having to work hard, good moral fiber and not being too selfish is a must. After all, if you can't think about others, why should others think about you? Respect - even for people or things that don't deserve it - goes a long way in life, and the fifth value Anyu was raised on is dedication. Quitting accomplishes less than nothing, and people who do it go nowhere. People who have these five traits shouldn't find themselves losing Anyu's faith in them anytime soon.

[spoiler=Biography]
Anyu was born far from the hustle and bustle of city life, in a backwater hamlet that was able to sustain itself with skillful farming backed up by a population consisting more or less entirely of waterbenders. In that run-down little hamlet, everyone was expected to pull their own weight from a young age, and Anyu, despite being quite literally the only person in town to not be a bender, was no exception. Due to being unable to use waterbending techniques to make agriculture easier, Anyu was forced to work harder than those around her to achieve the same results. While this set her behind for a good time, it ultimately meant the fate of her forgettable hometown rested on her shoulders. As Elemental Dystrophy began to strike the few dozen denizens of Anyu's birthplace a year and a half ago, all eyes turned to her. She was entrusted with the duty of going out to someplace more technologically advanced (kind of a low bar) to ask what was going on, and how to fix it.

Needless to say, she didn't take the news that the days of all her friends and family were quite possibly numbered very well. Every bit of her wanted to run away, but she still had a job to complete. Anyu returned home in tears before spilling the beans on what Elemental Dystrophy was. That it killed benders, that there was no cure, and that it was best for those affected to make their peace with the living world soon. What she did next, she couldn't explain even if she wanted to. Anyu packed up her few possessions, told everyone she was going to go do everything she could to discover a cure, and she ran. Anyu ran away as far as her legs and the collective money of her town would get her. Eventually, her travels brought her to Republic City, where she learned of one Dr. Orthro and his research. Needless to say, this was exactly what Anyu was looking for.

She's now among the six "benders" the good doctor has rounded up, and would throw her life on the line without second thought if it means a cure can be found.

[spoiler=Skills and Specializations]
Cooking: While she's no gourmet chef, Anyu's got a pretty good hand for cooking. She knows what is and isn't okay to eat, and if something in the latter can be prepared to make it safe to eat, Anyu most likely knows how to go about it. She's particularly skilled with vegetables and fish. This is the number-one thing about herself that she's proud of.

Efficiency & Endurance: Due to lots of long days working hard to keep up with others growing up, Anyu's a very efficient worker and can also go on longer than others before getting tired.

Weather Prediction: You don't grow up in a backwater farming town without learning a thing or two about how weather works. Anyu can predict weather more accurately than many people generally could without any technology to assist them.

[spoiler=Biography]

[spoiler=Skills and Specializations]

Congrats on being the first to complete your application.  Let's talk about pros and cons right away since you've already put your feet in the water.

First and foremost, Anyu is a great name.  I think it's pretty, but kind of bold.  It's not "soft and cuddly" pretty.  But rather, "soothing and interesting" pretty.  It's pleasant to say and I like the way it sounds.  In regards to surnames, I won't make them a requirement.  As we can note from the Avatar anime, it wasn't uncommon to only have a first name.  And in most Eastern cultures, it's most common to derive your full name as a title.  For example, "The Fire Lord Zuko", or, "Korra of the Southern Water Tribe".

In terms of appearance, I can tell right away what you were going for.  This is a very clear tribute to Toph, and I don't mind it at all.  In fact, it's subtle enough that it's not off-putting.  She reminds me a lot of my first impression of Avatar.  She could potentially be awesome and I don't even know it.  It's fun to imagine what the more plain characters could actually be capable of when you're trying to get to know them.

At first glance, her personality makes her sound bi-polar.  But thinking about it now, I feel like Anyu could just be a teenage girl going through the basic stages of maturity.  She's not crazy, she's just young and inexperienced with this many emotions and variables.  And that's fine.  It's realistic.

I also like that she came from a small town of water benders but chose to bend earth when Orthro gave her an S.E.D. glove.  It makes sense because it fits her background as a farm girl.  Naturally she would be drawn to the earth, and I feel like she would be willing to learn to bend Earth and find it exciting.

What I don't care for is the lack of boobs is the weather prediction.  I don't find it overpowering.  Not at all.  I find it kind of odd.  Not that it's forced, but rather it seems out of place.  Because weather isn't just something you can know.  Though it would be fair to say she could study things like weather patterns over days and try to predict the next storm, that would be fine and make more sense.  But flat out prediction is kinda 'eh'.  I don't like it but I don't dislike it.

Other than that, thanks for dropping the first app, and I look forward to possibly working with you again.

This is quite the app review :O

Yeah the weather thing I was having some trouble figuring out how to word it, so I just went with whatever I could think of. You've basically put what I was trying to say into more appropriate words though. Will make the appropriate edits shortly.

My app is complete. I keep forgetting to ask about surnames and whatnot regarding waterbender families, but I can easily edit this app when I get an answer from the host.

"If shaking your hand will find the cure faster, fine."

Name: Anyu

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Chosen Element S.E.D. Glove: Earth

Greatest Desire During the Quest: Find the cure for Elemental Dystrophy

[spoiler=Description]Uc2ZKGn.jpg

[spoiler=Personality]

Pretty much echo what Dad said, but I wanted to make a comment on the personal desire.

"Greatest Desire During the Quest: Find the cure for Elemental Dystrophy."

Every character is going to be searching for the cure. This is supposed to be what Anyu's personal desire is, aside from that. What is she looking to get out of this?

Age: 22

Gender: Male

Greatest Desire: To learn more martial arts styles to add to his arsenal

x393wz.jpg

[spoiler=Appearance:]

GUNHJ0z.png

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 154 lbs

x393wz.jpg

[spoiler=Personality:]

As a person in general, Shinya seems to an overall friendly person, despite coming from the Fire Nation (which has some pretty tough and not so friendly people from time to time). Nevertheless, he does his best to treat everyone equally and with the proper respect, be them bender or non.

When Shinya wants to think or is needing to get away from people (which does happen, everyone needs an escape in some way or form), he takes up practicing his martial arts forms or even meditates. However, when Shinya meditates, it is quite different than a normal Air Nomad meditation. For Shinya, he tends to stand on his hands and meditate in this fashion or even does this by hanging from his legs upside down. His reasoning: Shinya says it helps get the blood flowing and pumping.

During combat, Shinya never takes the first move. In his training, he found that one move could make or break you. He prefers to fight defensively and wait for his opponent to strike first. Once the first move is taken, Shinya can plan a counterattack and get a feeling of what his opponent's style is.

x393wz.jpg

[spoiler=Biography:]

"As a spark is the beginning of a fire, so is with us."

Shinya was born in the Fire Nation town known as Shu Jing. Unlike most residents within this town, rather being a Firebender or even an esteemed swordsman (due to the school that taught the way of the sword), Shinya was a non-bender and had no interests in the way of the sword. Because of this, his father began to instead school his son in the ways of a martial artist. Even if his son couldn't Firebend, he would learn how to defend himself well enough to take care of himself. In the manner of taking care of himself, Shinya was also taught that hunting was essential to surviving (if one didn't exactly have the coin or the means to buy food). Now Shinya would be able to fend for himself and take care of himself if and when the time came...and it surely did...but not in the way anyone would've hoped.

It was announced throughout the Fire Nation that the previous Fire Lord had fallen ill and died by the hands of a terrible disease known as Elemental Dystrophy. And with the previous Fire Lord's son now on the throne, it seemed like the E.D. plague began to run rampant among the Firebenders in the Fire Nation. Shinya watched as friends he held dear and even others around him started falling ill. It was at this moment, that Shinya left Shu Jing in search of a way to stop this disease from continuing on. Shinya's journey finally led him to the beginnings of the Elemental Dystrophy: Republic City.

He learned about what happened here when the disease first occurred. However, Shinya was approached by a councilman that he barely even knew. Next thing the young man knew, he was a part of a group of eight and was being prepared to help keep the peace and search for the cure to E.D.

Professional Martial Artist: Ever since Shinya was young, he has practiced martial arts and the way to defend himself. While some may have a grasping knowledge of how to fight, Shinya has a full on working knowledge of movements and fighting styles, due to his constant training and studying. He is proficient in using a mixture of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Hung Ga Kung Fu.

Hunter: Shinya grew up learning how to hunt by his father when he was of age. Because of this skill he's refined, he is able to track and hunt down his prey with ease. However, while he can do all this with hunting, he cannot properly cook the food he hunted, only gutting and cleaning it.

Shinya's Theme (Instrumental) | Battle Theme

  • Shinya's name is Japanese and can mean one of the two following: 心也 - Passionate, 心冶 - Fiery, Heart. However, with this character, the second translation is what his name comes out to be.
  • The styles of martial arts that Shinya is proficient are actually two styles that were based upon two bending styles in the Avatar universe: Northern Shaolin Kung Fu - This style is what Firebenders use, Hung Ga Kung Fu - This style is what the Earthbenders use.
  • The location in the Fire Nation that Shinya is from, Shu Jing, happened to be the location where Piandao lived. Piandao was once a famous Fire Nation swordmaster and bladesmith who also taught Avatar Aang's ally, Sokka.

[spoiler=Karina]

"There is too much suffering in the world as it is, and I will not stand idle."

Personal Information

Name:  Karina

Age: 20

[spoiler=Description:]

waterbender_by_linndsey-d56yd4b.jpg

height: 5'3

Weight: 140 lbs

[spoiler=Personality:]

Karina is what you would want of a doctor. She is stern, compassionate, and optimistic. She doesn't need much to make her happy, as her joy stems from those close to her being in good health and enjoying themselves. She is quite generous, more than willing to give up something she has if someone else wants it more than she. Karina isn't perfect though. She would rather lie to someone to keep them happy then tell the truth and make them upset. When this transfers to her medical field, it becomes quite detrimental. She would often tell a patient their condition seems to be improving, when the reality is not quiet that. Though she tries to make everything seem better than it is, her optimistic views do get old, especially when she refuses to consider the negative results of everyone's actions. Furthermore, Karina is overbearing at times, always trying to take care of her friends needs and treats them in a motherly fashion.

Her personality in combat will remain rather docile. She believes herself to be a healer, not a fighter. Rather than assaulting opponents, she will try and heal her comrades. If it comes down to it, she will fight. However, even in combat she apologizes to enemies she strikes, and attempts to pull her punches. Over all she is quite docile and soft spoken, never the leader of a situation. She will let others take that mantel for her. She isn't lacking self confidence, rather she knows she isn't suited for that kind of role. Over all, Karina is a youthful optimist who wants to reduce the suffering in the world, and better it for everyone.

[spoiler=Biography:]

Like her parents, and her parents before them, and her parents before them, Karina was born to the Northern Water Tribe as a doctor. She was taught the ways of medicine, and grew up learning it. It became her passion, and though she was not born a bender, it didn't stop her from working with them to aid in healing. Medicine came naturally to the young prodigy, as she enjoyed helping people. Sure enough, she made a career out of it. Despite being naturally gifted, she never slacked off. Contrary, actually. She worked twice as hard as everyone, determined to help rid her tribe of ailment and pain. Even she knew such ambition would never be achieved, though she developed this optimistic view of things since her youth.

Unfortunately, with the newly discovered E.D, the Northern Water Tribe became the opposite of what young Karina had envisioned. More people were becoming ill with it, including her brother, father, and mother. They had all been infected with the disease as they tried to use their water bending to heal others suffering from it. To the horror of Karina, her entire family was dying before her very eyes. They had been so caught up in trying to cure E.D they didn't realize their own condition until it was far too late.

Karina immersed herself further into studying, trying to find anything she could. She tried every known herb, medicine, technique, stopping just short of amputation. Unfortunately, all she was doing was slowing it. Many sleepless nights later, and at least 10 notebooks logging her results, still nothing. Her family was worse than ever, despite what she tried to make them think. Nothing was working, and Karina felt her entire world turning upside down. Everything was spinning and it was beyond her control. Finally, her father used the last bit of his energy to tell her to rest, and finally let go. The girl was too exhausted to object, and that night her family died over the course of a few hours. Her father, mother, then finally her brother.

Karina secluded herself into her work even more, cutting out all free time. She spent hours meticulously searching for a cure, searching for something, anything. Nothing seemed to be working. By now, she had a large amount of notes, with information about everything she knew regarding E.D. Her patients were given the best treatment she could give, but it wasn't enough. However, word of her information spread among the seas. Karina of the Northern Water Tribe had began to earn a reputation. Dr. Ortho had caught wind of it, and sent some scouts. One conversation led to another, and lo and behold, Karina was added to the team of benders.

Chosen Element S.E.D. Glove: Water

Skills and Specializations: As Karina's parents before her, and their parents before them, Karina was born into a family of doctors and was trained in medicine from a young age. Though not a bender, she still knows a great deal about medicine, enough to warrant her young appointment as doctor.

Greatest Desire During the Quest:  Other than looking for a cure, she wants to find out what happened to the Avatar. She refuses to believe there is no more Avatar, and sees them as an beacon of hope.

[spoiler=Tae Jin]

"My people cannot face extinction again."

Personal Information:

Name: Tae Jin

Age: 24

Motivation: To prevent the devastation of the Air Nation population.

[spoiler=Appearance]

 arjuna_vidas___airbending_by_renepolumor

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 155 lbs

Being an acolyte from the air nation, Tae Jin tends to wear the traditional garb, consisting of red, yellow, and orange robes that the air acolytes commonly sport. However, when going on more strenuous outings she sports something that while still free flowing, akin to air nation culture, is a bit form fitting to allow for more refined movements. Additionally, she does not sport the arrow tattoos that would mark her as an airbending master as she does not possess the capability to airbend naturally.

[spoiler=Personality]

An activist in every sense of the word, Tae Jin cares deeply and passionately for the world around her. An environmentalist, an idealist, an advocate for social justice, Tae Jin has protested, tabled, and spoke up for just about every cause. Living by the motto: 'Leave it better than you found it', she is determined to make this world a better and safer place for all living things. Even if it means she spends a few nights in jail or fasting for a few extra weeks. There is no price too great to buy another's awareness, in her opinion.

Of course, while her cause in noble and her passion is admirable, it doesn't always fit in with the Air Nation's way of life and teachings. Sure, they want to respect all forms of life, but there are many teachings requiring one to abandon the physical world, even if you are trying to save it. Plus, Tae Jin's passion is often at conflict with the serenity of her culture. This too creates a conflict within herself as she struggles to respect what she has been taught and remain true to herself.

However, more than ever she sees the danger of an approaching plague on her people. Too many of her fellow Air Nomads expect to take whatever will come in the face of ED, but she refuses to let the Air Nation be wiped out again. If there truly is a reason for all things to happen, then there was a reason for the Air Benders to be brought back and she refuses to let them to go quietly into the night.

[spoiler=Biography]

Tae Jin was born to a couple, her mother an airbender, and her father an Air Acolyte. True to the nomadic culture of the old Air Nation, Tae Jin spent much of her younger years traveling the world, going from one air temple to the next. An only child, Tae Jin often had to entertain herself as her parents each had their own goals in life that they worked tirelessly to achieve. Unfortunately that left very little time for family and left Tae Jin feeling lonely until she discovered her own passions.

At 14 she had been left on Air Temple Island in Republic City while her parents attended to their respective businesses in the city. However, Tae Jin being the bit of a firecracker that she is managed to make her way to the mainland to a protest that was happening to preserve the natural habitat of the fire ferret, which was being destroyed in the city's expansion plans. Thus Tae Jin's activist spirit was awakened.

As she grew older, Tae Jin faced much scrutiny from the monastic sect of her people, chastising her for some of her more brash actions. However, it was also in these instances where she felt she grew a deeper understanding of what it was to be a part of the air nation. Some people had to sit and wait for enlightenment to hit them, and Tae Jin admired them, but at the same time she also knew that while she could find just as much peace and calm in meditation she would never find enlightenment there. She had to chase it. Likewise, not all of the air nation beliefs applied the exact same to every individual. It was a matter of perspective.

Now, however, Tae Jin really only sees things one way. Her people stared down extinction once before. Originally, she wasn't to be included on the expedition for the cure but Tae Jin was persistent in convincing Dr. Orthro to accept her. There would be no one that cared as much as she did.

Combat Information:

Chosen Element S.E.D. Glove: Air

[spoiler=Skills & Specializations]

Air Acolyte Knowledge & Training: As an Air Acolyte, born and raised, Tae Jin's knowledge of Air Nation customs, culture, and philosophy is pretty extensive. Now, seeing as bending is partly a mental act, having this knowledge may accelerate her bending abilities.

Persuasion: Whether it be through speech or action, non-violent of course, Tae Jin is a very persuasive individual.

World Traveler: Being a nomad, Tae Jin has seen a lot of the world and knows a bit about everything. She has friends everywhere and with her activist lifestyle, unfortunately, a few enemies.

Other Information:

> Her name is derived from Korean names. Tae meaning 'great' and Jin meaning 'truth'

> Tae Jin's parents are actually now divorced, but both still very much alive. Her mother is an airbending master that lives at the Eastern Air Temple, having given up her nomadic lifestyle to further pursue her passion of airbending and teaching other benders that pass through. Her father, took the ultimate nomadic experience after the divorce and ventured into the spirit world through the Republic City Spirit Portal along with several other Air Nomads. All of whom were seeking true enlightenment.

[spoiler=Karina]

"There is too much suffering in the world as it is, and I will not stand idle."

Personal Information

Name:  Karina

Age: 20

[spoiler=Description:]

waterbender_by_linndsey-d56yd4b.jpg

height: 5'3

Weight: 140 lbs

[spoiler=Personality:]

[spoiler=Biography:]

Combat Info

Chosen Element S.E.D. Glove: Water

Skills and Specializations: As Karina's parents before her, and their parents before them, Karina was born into a family of doctors and was trained in medicine from a young age. Though not a bender, she still knows a great deal about medicine, enough to warrant her young appointment as doctor.

Greatest Desire During the Quest:  Other than looking for a cure, she wants to find out what happened to the Avatar. She refuses to believe there is no more Avatar, and sees them as an beacon of hope.

Very simplistic, straight forward, single minded character.  She knows what she wants to accomplish and she's set out to do it.  Granted her past is tragic after the loss of her family to E.D., she's been given the opportunity to change medicine forever.  But I'm not sure how realistic looking for the Avatar is.  Regardless, I don't have too many thoughts on Karina.  Looks good.

Greatest Desire: To ensure what happened to the Fire Lord doesn't happen to other Benders

[spoiler=Personality:]

[spoiler=Biography:]

[spoiler=Skills and Specialization:]

I only have one nitpick about Shinya.  And that's his desire.  It's basically another way of saying "to cure E.D.".  Because it's sort of riding on the coattails of the whole point of the journey.  I'd like to see you come up with something more creative for Shinya's desire.  Other than that, it's a good character.  I like it.

I'm also going to go ahead and put together a Skype chat for the RP, since it seems like we have enough people interested to get things together.  Also, please note I am in another Rp (also my own) so I will be back and forth giving these rps my attention.  Please do not think I'm neglecting you if I don't post for two or more days.  I assure you, my writing and rping with you all is very important to me.  Thanks in advance for understanding.
