I'll assume you guys at least got a chance to watch the episode this week

I still need to watch the previous two episodes (been behind on anime in general lately).

EDIT: Finally got around to catch up on the last three episodes

TRIPLE

qmDRyZ5.png

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 57]

- Bohman wakes with "new memories" and wants to fight Playmaker

- As Playmaker/Ai reach their destination, Ai begins to wonder if Windy had lied to them. That is until monuments try to strike them down and Bohman/Haru are in sight

- Playmaker challenges Bohman to get Jin's consciousness back, and Bohman accepts on the condition that was revealed (though Ai assumed that he'd be at stake)

- Been a while since we had a master duel, like 11-odd episodes

- during the first turn, Playmaker had assumed Bohman would use a different deck and at the end of it (after Bohman says that his set cards will decide the outcome), Ai comments on how much better Bohman's dueling is.

- Playmaker was sure that one of Bohman's set cards was the card that changes attribute, and was correct, but Bohman had anticipated Playmaker's anticipation (very clever, some actual big brain strategy)

- Bohman claims he was a victim of the Lost Incident, saying that Playmaker's data, thoughts, etc were backed up, but an accident happened and the digital version swapped with the real one. He then says that he's the real one and that Playmaker is the fake backup. I was like "WTF?", but it'll be intriguing to see how this pans out.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 58]

- Huh, Bohman used Half Shut, haven't seen that since 5ds

- Bohman going super saiyan? Just kidding

- When Playmaker questions Bohman about who kidnapped him (with Bohman replying Dr Kogami), Playmaker was certain that Bohman isn't his copy on the grounds that he has no memories and saying that Bohman had been implanted with fakes (and ofc Bohman claims the same, delusional). Though Ai has a point about no way to check memories.

 - Though with that in mind, Playmaker still believes he's the real deal (having a flashback of when he bumped into Revolver and how the latter became a voice of hope), and vows to uncover Bohman's indentity and the guy controlling him

- What made me go "WTF?!" was when Bohman used Storm Access... when it's a bloody master duel. This might be an indication of future instances of skills in master duels happening.

- When Bohman's attack seemed to finish Playmaker off, I'm not surprised Playmaker had a card to save his arse

- Playmaker seemingly had his final turn planned since his first when he discarded Clock Wyvern to the surprise of Haru who wondered when it happened. And when Bohman tried to funk with him one final time, Playmaker conveniently had Linkuriboh on the board to nope Bohman and win the duel.

- Wind World starts to destabilise and Playmaker/Soulburner sod off... log out.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 59]

- Ok, so a newbie prison guard has a thing for Baira it seems

- Le sigh, 15-minute recap, snoozefest.

- Dr Genome said it took three months to rewrite the system in the prison that Baira is locked in. That's funny as that is how long the season has been running for in real-time (this season begain on April 11th and this episode aired on July 11th), no wonder this was a recap episode from the Knights of Hanoi's point of view, now that they had done what they needed to do, they binge watched the season thus far and chatted 'bout it.

- Yusaku finds out that Baira got how and rightly assumes that Revolver did it, and Kusanagi comments at how they have an extra enemy to deal with.

[spoiler=episode 60 preview]
Brave Max the Loser
I know the title seems obvious that Brave Max is gonna lose in this episode, I'm not trusting the title given Cardfight Vanguard (V series) episode 9 was named "Kai Loses" and the exact opposite happened.

EDIT (Thursday);
qmDRyZ5.png
[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 60]

- I'm not surprised that Bohman had no intention of giving Jin's consciousness data despite losing (I know the world destabilised, but still)

- Akira talks about the gate n' such to Go/Blood Shepherd, saying that he is analysing the gate to find out if the gate will reappear

- When Blood Shepherd buggers off to go about his business, Go asks if they can trust him, to which Akira says yes... as a hunter. (Very reassuring)

- Akira wonders if only there was a way to contact Playmaker directly, but since they have no leads, doing so is harder than they think (Though Aoi thinks that a person's true nature doesn't change, so they'd know if he was nearby)

- Aoi sets up a flash event to lure Naoki/Brave Max

- We finally see Ghost Girl summon Altergeists that had been out for a while; Multifaker/Hexstia

- I do agree wih Ghost Girl, Brave Max is an idiot. He overextended (something that bad players tend to do) and was left wide open as a result, then again his hand was sheet anyway. If he didn't Link Summon, he could've dealt some damage to Ghost Girl, but the result would've been the same.

 - (I laughed and facepalm'd when Brave Max said that Link monsters can't return to the hand)

- In the end, Ghost Girl/Blue Girl agreed that this was a waste of time

- I have to hand it to Blood Shepherd, setting up a trap to get Playmaker/Soulburner to show up, though his trap got Soulburner when I'm sure it was meant for Playmaker.

Since I forgot to do this yesterday

[spoiler=VRAINS 060]

  • Naoki acting tough again and claiming Playmaker chose him; uh yeah, you really do suck.
    • I guess he had a semi-good strategy to summon Green Baboon easier, but he made the one big mistake of not setting backrow or having alternative measures to protect himself. Or really, Link Summoning when he didn't have to.
  • OK, we got a Link 2 with more than 2100 ATK (2600 to be exact), but requires Level 5+ Beasts to make it (which is fair enough). Though, there exist a few members who are still adamant about not passing 2000-2100 ATK in design even then, but that's irrelevant to this discussion.
  • Ghost Girl generally wins overall, but it was a short duel.
  • Blood Shepherd going rogue and tricking Playmaker / Soulburner into entering the Windy World at a higher place, but was a trap and latter got dragged in.

[spoiler=Yeah]

He basically overextended, and he didn’t even open any backrow so he was unable to defend himself against Ghost Girl’s stuff.

[spoiler=VRAINS 061]

  • We find out in this episode that Soulburner is legitimately afraid of Despair from the Dark. So guys, play that and guy will probably buckle further.
  • Right, and I don't know if that guy (Ryujiro) is legitimately a coward or playing stupid.
    • If that kind of play got him national title or something, it probably means the playerbase in this world suck like hell; least by 2018 standards otherwise.
  • Unless game mechanics are being stupid in the anime, that guy fighting Soulburner in flashback shouldn't have been able to play a Quick-Play during the End Phase. So yeah, there you go.

The short form of the entire episode; Soulburner is a shut-in after death of parents, swears off dueling and loses his sanity when Despair from the Darkness is summoned. Half of me wants to say "you call yourself a man after that, Takeru", but kid has PTSD.

[spoiler=wrong]You can activate a Quick-Play Spell from your hand during any Phase of your own turn. This includes the End Phase.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 61]

- The episode more-or-less delves more into Takeru's past, how he was a shut-in following the Lost Incident, skiving school, something that his grandpa did not approve of, (being stalked by Flame) and dealing with a bunch of dicks who thought that duelling Takeru would be the perfect revenge after the latter took an interest in Playmaker. (How right he'd be with his deck)

- Flame suggests Takeru find Playmaker to seek out a new path, though Takeru knew that he'd have to duel, something he swore off following the Lost Incident.

- Before the duel started, Flame mentions that it mark his future.

- I had to double check Plague Wolf's effect to see if it was a hard OPT, guess not.

- So before Salamangreats, Takeru had a FIRE Warrior deck, k

- When the dick added a Zambo to his hand, I was like "Given the flashbacks, that has got to be Despair from the Dark." and it was, the monster that traumatised him during the Lost Incident.

[spoiler=VRAINS 62]

  • Yusaku runs into two of Go's henchmen (let's call them this), Ai gets one of them to log out initially and then they handle other one.
  • Using a Gouki deck, so...probably Goukis are mass produced and Go is not the only one who uses them [likely].
    • Then again, SOMEONE decided to spoil that part earlier in the day (but it's just showing the episode)
  • Yusaku wins with OTK consisting of Pentastag, Cyberse Annihilation and well, the other guy being stupid enough to use Rematch to summon stuff that was piercing fodder. But to be fair to him, he didn't know Pentastag could do piercing (however no one knows that).
  • Back to Soulburner stuff, he's still scared shitless of Despair from the Dark (and Blood Shepherd being more of a douche about it).
  • New Salamangreat monsters show up, but still same thing of summoning Heatleo and doing usual sheet.
  • 3D Bio Printing is just plot device just so he can summon Despair from the Dark, torment Soulburner to no end and then multiply it by 4.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 62]

- Akira doubts that Blood Shepherd thinks that they're his allies (Gee, he's only just figuring this out? Wow)

- When the forgettables turn up, Ai fires a data storm that causes one of them to log out, leaving Afro-boy to face Playmaker using a Gouki deck with a new Link-3 that noone will run

- Blood Shepherd finds Soulburner's weakness and BSs said card into his deck out of thin air.

- Flame tells Soulburner what Blood Shepherd has done to which Soulburner concludes that it isn't on to look into his soul without permission (too right, keep private sheet private)

- SOL finds that Blood Shepherd has built a high-level program to which Akira concludes that Blood Shepherd's intellect rivals the late Dr Kogami

- Blood Shepherd must have some decent peripheral vision, eliminating Ghost Girl's camera without batting an eye

- Like last time, Blood Shepherd's AI shows how distrustful it is by not mentioning all of the equip spells effects and Blood Shepherd calls Soulburner a fool for believing the AI.

- Blood Shepherd had prepared for "Reincarnation Link Summon" by utilising a recurring Trap (How convenient).

- Using plot device combo pieces, Blood Shepherd was able to take advantage of Soulburner's trauma by filling his board with 20 billion Despair from the Dark (it might as well be 20 billion even though it's only 3 "copies" of the real one in the S/T zone

- Playmaker OTKs Afro-boy with the Link-2 from the starter deck that pierces and a Flame Wingman-esque spell. Meanwhile forgettable #2 (Spiky-boy) turns back up

[spoiler=VRAINS 63]

Nothing much to discuss here, except Firewall making an appearance here to screw over the Gouki user in another FTK. So guys, you wanted Firewall back; you got it.

Soulburner's duels aren't worth talking about much, except for him bluffing about being afraid of sheet and he overcame that long ago. Then you have Blood Shepherd being pissed off that Ghost Girl interfered with his duel. (Well, he's a backstabbing jackass anyway who cares only about money; not appreciative that he was saved from being defeated).

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 63]

- Spiky-boi also has a new Gouki link (that noone will run) and despite the defence he put up, Playmaker still manages to OTK by bouncing his stuff with Security and Firewall (oh hey, it's been like 4 months since that was used). Serves him right for being cocky in the middle of Playmaker's plays.

- Blood Shepherd chats about how the lost incident has scarred Soulburner and how hard they are to heal (especially during childhood, which is true to be fair) and says that Soulburner has no future as a duelist (What a dickish thing to say).

- Meanwhile Kusanagi encounters an error and Ghost Girl is able to ascertain who is trying to rescue Soulburner and says about how his finishing touches are lacking whilst helping

- Utilising Reincarnation Link Summon and an equip Spell, Soulburner breaks Blood Shepherd's board and reveals that he got over his trauma ages ago and simply acted like he was still scared because Flame hid the part of Soulburner's memories that depicted him getting over the trauma and Flame reiterates what Blood Shepherd said about how foolish it is to trust an AI (I remember Ai tried this in episode 54 but was told to shut up). As he tries to attack directly, Ghost Girl paves the way for the rescue program to work and abruptly end the duel. When Blood Shepherd finds out, he claims that if she didn't interfere, he would've won and declares her his enemy before attempting to shoot her.

[spoiler=answer to above]

Not counting ARC-V to an extent, no.

We had Roku using the Poker Knights from Yugi's deck if that counts for anything. But that seems to be about it.

[spoiler=VRAINS 64]

  • Naoki's getting somewhat annoying. Supposedly he found out Yusaku is Playmaker and threatens to open his mouth about it if Yusaku doesn't listen to him.
  • Backstory of how Yusaku and Kusanagi met, so...yeah
  • Yusaku actually used non-Cyberses at the time, which is cool. Also fun fact, the stuff he used this episode is in the starter deck (barring Gaia Saber for obvious reasons, and the Spells).

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 64 (Zoo Lane)]
- This is pretty much a flashback episode which covers Yusaku's and Kusanagi's past prior to episode 1.
 - After the Lost Incident, Kusanagi dropped sports and wanted to become a hacker and as for Yusaku, he was known as "Unknown" in Link VRAINS and before acquiring a Cyberse deck (and we'll see how he acquires in the next episode) he ran stuff like Photon Thrasher (I didn't think we'd see that outside of Zexal-Kaito.dek) and Marauding Captain. It is revealed that the two met as Kusanagi/Unnamed was running from the Knights of Hanoi and during their second meeting, Kusanagi finds out that Yusaku is also investigating the Lost Incident and after he helps Yusaku log out, he requests they team up.
- I thought it was somewhat amusing to see Kusanagi lie to Ai claiming to give him something nice only for it to be a flyer advertising a sale (at least it's not a DFS sale  Kappa  )
- When Takeru bought Kusanagi a burger, Ai thought it was a bad idea to bring that to a hot dog stand (Uh, does it matter? especially as Kusanagi said that it's important to taste test your rivals)
- Meanwhile Naoki claims to know Yusaku's secret and essentially blackmails him so he doesn't reveal said secret in return for a... request.

Oh hey, a Duel Quiz, that's pretty fun, not sure they have done that before, maybe me memory is crappy, but it's something different, so yeah that's pretty neat. I feel they explained a bit too much, but I guess they had to fill out the time somewhat. Nothing much else interesting, he gets his Cyberse Deck and that's pretty much it

Last time they had Duel Quizzes was in early ZEXAL iirc, but my memory is hazy on that. Don't think ARC-V had any, though I know 5Ds had one in those episodes that 4Kids, for whatever reason, never dubbed.

[spoiler=VRAINS 65]

  • Backstory into how Yusaku gets his Cyberse deck.
  • Big play to beat the ghost given the Extra Link and Chaos Burst. (KoH neglected to observe the face-down card, which cost him.)
    • Hey YGOPro (or if Konami makes another console game for Yugioh), make it a Duel Puzzle; kthxbai
  • Apparently the Duel Quiz was a mirror of Den City, and the Deck was found where Secure Gardna was summoned. (Clever)
  • Naoki's big mouth reveals that Yusaku works at a hot dog stand, which is illegal. (Well, I guess he didn't find out Yusaku is Playmaker)
    • Seriously though, he's comic relief at this point.

Although there were no duel puzzles, Arc-V did have that obnoxious quiz kid.

Yeah, 5Ds had duel puzzles in two episodes, one of which wasn't dubbed.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 65]

- Oh boy, a second flashback episode, detailing how Yusaku got the Cyberse deck

- Inside a dungeon, Kusanagi triggers a traps that nearly fucks him (he even said that whoever designed it has watched too many movies, and he's not wrong tbf). After Yusaku saves him, he notes that people who have fell there were unable to log out (essentially died then), whilst Kusanagi notes that he could've taken a lot of damage IRL

- Whilst researching this dungeon, the two come to the conclusion that perhaps the KoH are hunting the Cyberse is because they fear it (seems plausible).

- Upon reaching the destination, Yusaku and Kusanagi spots a Hanoi bloke attempt to get the deck and attempts a duel puzzle and he obviously failed because he didn't read his cards (for example Update Jammer would've negated Megamorph during damage calc anyway), and pays the ultimate price.

- Yusaku steps in as he has figured it out (even a Hanoi guy interrupts in the middle of his plays spouting stuff about tokens that ended up being irrelevant). He figures out (by looking at what cards he has on the board, hand and GY) after the Hanoi's failure that he has to win via burn damage and assembles a board large enough to utilise Thunder Crash and Torrential Reborn to go for game. (And ofc the Hanoi guy interrupts a second time when Yusaku used Tremendous Fire, and I didn't appreciate that as backseat duelling is frowned upon especially if you do it whilst a player is in the middle of their plays and they know what they are doing)

- When Yusaku and Kusanagi try to claim the deck, the sarc disappears and the Hanoi guy says that they were tricked. However Yusaku figures out that the field was essentially a map of Den City which led them to a warehouse with a Secure Gardna on the door to a room containing the Cyberse deck. (Of course I'm fairly sure that leaving a card like that on a door is not a good idea, but oh well)

- Meawhile Naoki reveals that Yusaku's secret is... that he has a part time job working at the hot dog stand and that the school forbids it*, and he promises not to grass him up if he helps filling in forms for a Blue Angel event, but by then Yusaku has already buggered off and Naoki says that he'll grass him up to Playmaker (Which we know is completely pointless).

- As the flashback ends, Flame/Takeru realises that there is one unanswered question, why did he call himself Playmaker, and of course we don't find out and instead we see a scene of Yusaku saying that he is now Playmaker (What a load of bollocks, leaving that question unanswered for the audience)

All in all, this wasn't a great episode. The duel puzzle concept of it was good, but it was wasted imo

*And yes I had to do some digging here regarding employment laws. What Naoki said isn't wrong as I found that some schools in Japan do forbid having a job, but not all of them (Of course I would say that Domino High is an example of a school that doesn't forbid having a job as Joey mentioned having a paper round, but Tea said "isn't it prohibited?!" and Joey said that he had special permission to do so for his tuition. The dub omitted the part about needing special permission as laws are different in the west). In the west, it is ok to have a part time job whilst you're at high school, as long as you don't do it for too long or before/after a certain time of day

- Gee, this isn't the first time I had to do digging around employment laws after watching an anime episode this year, as I did the same after watching Pokémon SM068.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 66]
- Whilst trawling though message boards, Ai finds a message from a "Mr Earth Ignis" wanting to meet Playmaker. Kusanagi wonders if an Ignis would flat out post on a message board to which Ai replies yes saying that he's a straight shooter. Ai uses the Ignis algorithm asking where to meet and after the earth Ignis replies, Kusanagi assumes that it could be a trap by Blood Shepherd as he knows the algorithm after setting that trap a few episodes ago.
- Meanwhile at SOL, Queen informs Akira that the company isn't generous enough to keep employees who don't achieve results (Like a sales company, who'd get rid of underperforming employees). As for the other employees, they find the Ignis' message but Hayami claims that it is a hoax saying that a real Ignis wouldn't post as one on a message board (Sounds 'bout right)
- Upon reaching the coordinates, Playmaker asks what the other Ignis are like. Ai says that Light is the leader but says that he is too smart. Aqua is the sub leader who can tell the difference between truth and lies. And Earth is honest, no-nonsense.
- Earth wants to duel Playmaker to determine the true nature of humans with his own eyes following from what Aqua told him, determining what side he is on from his point of view.
- As Earth uses a nearby tree to duel for him, Playmaker assumes that his partner is Spectre (I have to admit, that is the jammiest assumption ever, just because Spectre had a deck revolving around a funking tree), and when earth comes to the logical conclusion that humans destroyed Cyberse world as Ignis wouldn't fight, it reinforces Playmakers assumptions that his partner is Spectre
- As expected of an Ignis, Earth has an EARTH Cyberse deck and its boss monster has an effect to negate face-up sheet when it dies, which prevented Playmaker from nicking it via his Link.
- When Earth summons Crystal Heart, the scenery reinvigorates and Ai recognises it as Aqua's card but wonders why Earth has it. At this point Earth says that it is time to verify humanity and AI's future.

[spoiler=VRAINS 66]

  • Apparently Ai posted same thing 212 times on the message boards. (That ring any bells here?)
  • Earth wants to duel Yusaku to see if humanity is worth trusting; also socially awkward.
  • So Invalid Dolmen just requires 2+ EARTH monsters on a 2.8K body that does stuff. Uh yeah, I think the writers are finally breaking the mold a bit more on Link design.
    • Thing has Tri-Gate arrows, which is fine. (People already abuse it anyway, so...)
  • Link 1 with 1600 ATK; just requires vanilla Cyberse and points up, but...that isn't an issue.
  • Earth summons a Link 2, and it's recognized as Aqua's monster.

[spoiler=Thoughts on VRAINS 67]

- On Cyberse World, Aqua tells Earth to decide on his own whether humans and AI can be allies. Obviously he wanted to join the side she is joining, but she rightly kept her decision to herself.

- Crystal Heart has an effect to co-link an EARTH monster from his GY and it is then revealed that Invalid Dolmen has an effect that forces players to attack it, thereby protecting Crystal Heart symbolising Earth's feelings for Aqua and wanting to protect her. (It reminded me of when Playmaker moved Tindangle Hound/Angel, which symbolised Akira/Aoi from the GY to the hand) and Ai remembers a tale of when Aqua scolded him and Earth didn't like that attention.

- Playmaker notes that if Earth is an AI that can fully understand emotions, then he could be dangerous.

- When Invalid Dolmen goes in for a direct attack, Ai does his usual bad acting shtick (Honestly, he should take acting classes Kappa ), acting like they're gonna lose, and as expected, Earth knew that Ai was acting.

- Earth notes that despite being irresponsible, Ai is calculating and after Dolmen's second attack (via Crystal Heart's eff) was blocked, he asked Playmaker why he's with Ai, which Playmaker replied with his usual "3 things" shtick.

- Of course Invalid Dolmen has an effect that protects him from monster effects while co-linked

- I did like the forward planning that Playmaker displayed, his new link monster had an effect to reduce the ATK of SS'd monster and chose the right time to banish it accordingly so its effect can be used to go for game. (At least Earth protected Aqua's monster to the very end which Ai appreciated)

- In the end after Playmaker's win, Earth revealed that he knows funk all about Bohman, which to him technically fits the criteria of giving info that he had, and then got Playmaker/Ai to sod off, which annoyed Ai as they basically duelled to help Earth kill time

All in all, apart from the exposition of Earth's feelings for Aqua, I feel that this episode left a sour taste in my mouth.

[spoiler=VRAINS 67]

  • Crystal Heart's effect is to summon a EARTH Link and co-link it, adding more power and potential direct attacks.
  • Invalid Dolmen's effect to make it the attack target reflects Earth's relationship with Aqua; he wants to protect her.
  • Yusaku does a bunch of things to weaken Dolmen to 0 and push for game, though yeah, Clock Dragon didn't get the benefit of its massive stat bonuses. (Clock Lizard still used all of the Cyberse mill fodder to do it)
  • Earth knows nothing about Bohman, so...in actuality, Yusaku/Ai technically just wasted their time to an extent.
    • For us, we at least see another Ignis and his Deck, but in-universe, doesn't accomplish much.

Now to see what happens next week. (Uh, may need to check if VRAINS still airs on Wednesdays or it too shall be moving to Sundays like a few other series)
