I think you guys are being a little too hard on it

[spoiler=Episode 2]

Aoi saving Yusaku is a good sign for her character imo. You gotta remember the history this show's director has with female leads, he knows how they should be portrayed.

I was a bit iffy when it clicked with me episode 1 that they meant those speed duels. Although, I'm pass it. It wasn't exactly super different from how a normal duel goes imo. No where near as drastic as a Turbo Duel from 5Ds or Action Duel from Arc V was. Not to mention, Skill's are a much better gimmick than action cards. (Those got annoying after a bit)

Storm Access bugs me a little because it's a built in "I top deck cuz I'm protag"... but I guess it's better for them to give a reason rather than just have them pull it from their ass. Also I think it would be cool to see him plunge himself into a violent storm dangerously, endangering his life, to get the card he needs. I just wanna know if he keeps the cards he pulls or if he has to pull them again. Would be weird if he had to rely on chance to reuse Decode Talker.

Also that Link Summoning animation is funking beautiful.

For an anime that airs on Wednesdays, I'm still treating it as if it's a Sunday anime still.
Anywho;
[spoiler=Thoughts on episode 2]
- I thought it was a good idea to explain how Speed Duels work including skills, at that point I was like "teh fuq?!" after the Pot of Greed eff that the KoH pulled (though that was hacked). Though to be fair, the reason I was like that was because I hadn't played enough Links.
- I'm not surprised Yusaku didn't have his ace already (justifies what Ignis said about his deck) though the fact that he grabbed it from a data storm, felt like an asspull to me.
- Blue Angel saving Yusaku, "returning the favour" I did like that tbph
- Seems like the series has gotten darker; with the whole if you get hurt in VRAINS, you get hurt for real.
- So it seemed that the Knights of Hanoi had been trying to eliminate the Cyverse-type, well then.

I'm sorry, I've seen a bunch of people say this and I just don't understand it. How is "if you do in the game, you die in real life" darker than the more traditional "If you die in real life, you die in real life"?

That seems like a strange assumption to make, considering the name implies they're a pair. Though I definitely agree the pressures to make the anime an even bigger promotion vehicle for the card game have been increasingly intrusive.

IMO, every generation they become a little more prone to one-shot their cards for the sake of promotion than they used to. Cards like Enlightenment Paladin or Nirvana High Paladin which even had some build up for them never appeared again. The Ancient Gear structured deck was just shoved into a character that had nothing to do with the theme for a couple episodes and he even dropped the deck by himself to go back to normal before said deck was defeated. Also, most of Yuya's Performapals were one-shot cards with the only unifying characteristic that they were P-pals.... but not all that many cards were recurrent. Sawatari even changed decks 3 times, the second which put him in a better spot than the one that'd come in next, and said last deck which would not shine until his duel with Zarc.

I'm sure the cards that weren't meant to promote current product were shamelessly placed to have something to give us 5 to 10 years down the road in some nostalgia-focused release a la Legendary Collection... Namely Sawatari's first one-shot deck, the Panther Warrior cards from that dude that never appeared again, or any of Sergey's cards (Earthbounds and that "50-shades of plants" theme xD )

EDIT:

On the theme of the two working together (the "Talker" duo of Links). I hope they do that. I'm sure at some point they'll have a bigger swarm, but Speed Duels don't seem to make it easy to make big enough swarms..... Now that I think about it.... in non-Speed Duels Yusaku won't even have an Extra Deck....

- - - - - - - -

I wanna be more faithful to VRAINS but I have very little hopes they won't do something like this again. Maybe I'm getting old for this stuff because Arc V's finale sunk low enough for me that it made me regain some respect for many aspects of ZeXal, and I didn't think that'd ever happen. I don't want to down the road feel like Yugioh has become comparable to something like Bakugan.... *shrugs*   I hope VRAINS is enjoyable and smart....

I so far have very little issues with Speed Duels. I wish they gave more continuous abilities like the actual Duel Links game does rather than "once per duel Pot" or a built-in plot device. Which to be fair, Yusaku's ability doesn't give him any advantage since it's not a "draw" that gives him any pluses..... BUT he's gonna asspull from infinite Extra Deck toolbox pushed by plot convenience in the worst cases..... not that main characters didn't already do that with Yuma and Yuya creating their Ace's evolutions every time so w/e... at least it's not grabbing Action Cards so I'll take it lol.

Still, if only they had given him a more solid and tactical skill that worked with his deck's theme in interesting ways.

In Duel Links, I've seen some amusing skills. May Valentine has the right to look at the top of her deck's card at all times, and Tea doesn't take battle damage during her own turn, to name a few examples. I think the concept could have been much more creative than the skill he got.

It just is, if not equally so.

Look at it this way; "If you die in real life, you die in real life" does what it says on the tin. but in a game, generally speaking if you die you respawn, but in this case your life is connected to your avatar so you can't be as reckless with your actions.

It was said that the people who got blasted with fire got their accounts deleted. Which would probably be a bad thing but not a fatal thing; Yugioh wouldn't randomly kill off scores of bystanders.

Which would mean the dying in real life thing only applies to Speed Duels. Dueling on motorcycles carries the same risk of personal harm, so it's just as well.

True, except that there's apparently NO regulations on Speed Duels. You don't wear helmets, the courses aren't predefined and free of obstacles like a racetrack, there's no medical personnel standing by, and far as I can tell, there's no rules that prohibit malicious attacks on other players.

[spoiler=Script 3]
Yusaku: Last time on Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS:

Playmaker: Cyberse Wizard’s effect!
Now, the Cyberse-Type Decode Talker can inflict piercing damage!
Decode End!

KoH: AAAAAHHHHHHH!

Playmaker: You have no right to call yourself a Duelist!

Shima: Playmaker has saved Link VRAINS!

Shoichi: Well done, Yusaku.

KoH: Playmaker!

Playmaker: Knight of Hanoi!
Just who are you people?!

KoH: I’m afraid I can’t tell you…
I’m taking you down with me!

Ai: Oh no! He’s planning to take us with him!

(OMNOMNOMNOM Sequence)

KoH: AAAAAHHHH!

Playmaker: What did you do?

Ai: Protecting you, obviously.
If I didn’t do that, you’d take damage, and your real body would be in big trouble.
Anyway, I think you should log out ASAP.

GO: I’ve found you, Playmaker!

GO: Let’s have a Duel right now!

Blue Angel: That was quite a spectacular performance.
Prepare yourself!

Playmaker: Sorry, but I’m not interested in you people.

GO: Tch! He ran off!

Ai: That took a toll on you, didn’t it?

Yusaku: Yeah…
After I take my break, I’ll thoroughly analyze your program.

Ai: Sureeee~~!

Akira: Playmaker teamed up with Ignis?

Revolver: Playmaker…
I never expected that he’d turn out to be a dark horse.

Specter: Are you saying it’s not an oversight on your part, Master Revolver?
But at least, SOL Technologies didn’t get their hands on Ignis.

Revolver: In any case, it won’t take long for us to find out who he is.
First:
He hates us, the Knights of Hanoi.
Second:
We can narrow it down to people who have Cyberse.
And Third:
He will come to me eventually.
He wants to fight me, after all.

Specter: I’ll stand by your analysis, sir.

Revolver: I’m looking forward to that.
Let’s prepare for that battle, shall we?

(Opening Sequence)

Announcer: Anyway, just who is Playmaker? A playmaker is basically someone who leads a team’s offense in a team game, right?

Demon Kakka: Then he might as well be Link VRAINS’s shadow leader.
There were people who witnessed him fighting the Knights of Hanoi before, weren’t there?

Terry Satou: It’s pretty cool how he never publicly reveals his identity.
If it were me, I’d totally reveal myself!

Naomi: Playmaker is so my type!
He’s so handsome, my heart just pounds when I see him!

Anne: Really? It’s just an avatar, isn’t it?
He can customize his appearance however he wants!
If he hasn’t revealed himself, he must be really ugly!

Naomi: Why are you saying that while looking at my face?!

Frog: upsy-daisy

Pigeon: Yamamoto-senpai! Didn’t expect to see you here!

Frog: Don’t call me with my real name! Anyway, what’s the situation?

Pigeon: Link VRAINS is getting pretty crowded.

Frog: I can tell that.
Usually, it’s just the Duelists, but today, the media people are filling up this place as well.

Pigeon: They all want a scoop on Playmaker.
Every news outlet is on the lookout for him.

Pigeon: That’s why the connection’s been kind of slow, and I keep getting hit by buildings!

Frog: If you turn off the unnecessary chat in the setting, it’ll improve the speed a bit.

Pigeon: Oh. Didn’t know that.
My god, you’re right!

Spectator: Playmaker has appeared!

Frog: Hah! Where?!

”Playmaker”: Hey! I’m Playmaker!

Pigeon: Hey, get the camera over here!
Wait, Senpai.
He’s over there, too!

Frog: Hah?

”Playmaker”: HAHAHAHA! I am Playmaker!

”Playmaker”: No! I’m the real Playmaker here!

Pigeon: I highly doubt that.
I mean, your avatar’s glitching out…

Pigeon: Those guys are probably all fake!

Frog: Dagnabbit!
It’s just a bunch of duplicate avatars!

Shoichi: I’m surprised
The card data that you’ve obtained are materializing into physical cards…
This Data Storm thing sure is something, all right.

Ai: Well, you sure are famous, aren’t you, Great Sir Playmaker?
Even if you erase your logging records, there will still be photos of you floating around.
So much for not standing out, eh?

Yusaku: Why do you know that?!

Ai: Of course I know that.
I’ve been running around in the Net for a while, so I know many things.

Yusaku: What is the Data Storm?

Ai: Who knows? Most of my memories were devoured, and I’m just an eye now!

Yusaku: Well, whatever.
I never expected you to speak honestly.
I’m going to analyze you right now.

Ai: Hey now, are you actually going to analyze me?
It’s not like you’re going to find anything.

Yusaku: Well, I don’t trust you.

Ai: AH! So you’re going to lay bare all of my secrets?!
I’m so embarrassed right now~!

Yusaku: Kusanagi-san, turn off the speaker, please.

Shoichi: Gotcha.

Shoichi: By the way, Yusaku, why don’t we give it a name? It can get confusing if we just keep calling it “it.”

Yusaku: That’s just a waste of time.

Shoichi: We can just keep it simple.
If it were a dog, you would name it Pooch, or Shiro, or Betta and such, right?

Yusaku: Then, let’s call it Ai. It’s an AI, after all.

Shoichi: Ai, eh?
Well, it’s not a bad name.
I mean, it’s also an “eye,” so let’s go with that.

Yusaku: Okay. Kusanagi-san. Can you give me a hand?

Shoichi: Sure thing.

Surfer Dude 1: All right! Let’s do this!
Be sure to record our breathtaking feats!

Surfer Dude 1: Whoa! Dude, this is awesome!

Surfer Dude 2: I’ve never done something like this before!

Security Bot: Speed Dueling is dangerous.
Stop this at once.

Surfer Dude 1: Like we care! As if we’d stop doing something as fun as this!

Surfer Dude 2: Let’s ignore it and go full speed ahead!
Yahooo!
AH!

Security Bot: As a punishment for ignoring our warning, we shall ban your accounts.

Surfer Dudes: For real?!

Bishop: This incident has caused quite a lot of chaos in Link VRAINS.

Rook: Maybe we should shut it down for a while to do some maintenance?

Knight: There’s already reckless people showing up, and some people were hurt as well.

Akira: May I say something?

Bishop: What is it, Zaizen?

Akira: I don’t think that shutting down Link VRAINS is a good solution.
If we shut it down, our company will suffer immeasurable loss in stocks and profits.

Rook: You have a point…

Akira: If the Data Storm still exists, it means that the Cyberse World is intact as well.
Ignis knows where the Cyberse World is, and he is currently in the possession of a hacker called Playmaker.

Knight: Do you know who Playmaker is?

Akira: We’re currently investigating it.

Rook: Didn’t all of this happen because of your carelessness, Security Manager?

Akira: My apologies.
However, Playmaker is a hacker who is taking on the Knights of Hanoi.
And more importantly, he wants to fight against the Knights of Hanoi.
If we shut down Link VRAINS, and Playmaker and the Knights of Hanoi move their battleground to somewhere else, our company will lose the Cyberse World forever.

Rook: Then, what should we do?

Akira: We’ll keep Link VRAINS up, and have it be the battlefield for Playmaker and the Knights of Hanoi!
We’ll capture Playmaker in there.

Rook: Can you do it?

Akira: Yes, sir!

Bishop: Very well, then.
Zaizen, I’ll let you take charge.
But I won’t tolerate any failure.

Akira: I understand.

Ema: If you have business with me, we could have just used the Net.

Akira: It’s an important request, so I want to meet with you face-to-face.

Ema: Oh, I see.
So, what is your request?

Akira: I want you to investigate Playmaker at once.

Ema: Oh my…As in, the Playmaker people’ve been talking about?
Well, he does have something SOL Technologies spent a great deal of effort to search for, so of course, you guys aren’t just going to do nothing about it.
But you’re not going to ask me to Duel Playmaker?

Akira: We can leave something simple like that to others.
There’s many Duelists who want to fight Playmaker, after all.

Ema: Haha~ That’s true.
There are certainly many simple-minded Duelists like that.
They all see Playmaker as a nuisance.
That is so like you.
You’ll use anyone and anything you can use to achieve your goals.
Including me.

Akira: I’m counting on you, Ema.

Ema: Okay.
I’m also interested in this Playmaker person, as well.
I’ll contact you if I dig up something.

(COMMERCIAL: DOWNLOAD DUEL LINKS)

Go: God damn it!

Manager: No need to be so angry.
You won’t be able to win if you can’t keep a cool head.

Go: You haven’t seen the news?
Look!
They’re all talking about Playmaker!
I’m supposed to be the champion of Link VRAINS!

Manager: I know.
You’ve put in a lot of effort in order to reign over Link VRAINS.
I know that better than anyone.

Go: I’ll beat him to a fine pulp when I find him!

Manager: All right, I heard you!
Why don’t you cool your head and check out this Speed Duel thing?
There’s no doubt that Speed Duels will be more popular in the future.
And you’ll probably fight in one at some point, too.

Go: Who is that?

Manager: No clue.
I’ve never seen him before.

Akira: You’re Mr. Onizuka, I assume?

Go: I am. Who are you?

Akira: I am the Security Manager of SOL Technologies.
Zaizen Akira.

Manager: I am GO Onizuka’s manager.

Akira: I know.
But this is unexpected.
I thought you’d be living a more luxurious life.

Manager: Onizuka was never a Duelist who is motivated by money.

Go: Enough small talk.
What does SOL Technologies want with me?

Akira: My apologies, Mr. Onizuka.
You’re a Duelist who loves Link VRAINS, which is why I have a request for you.

Go: Request?

Akira: I want you to take down Playmaker.
And bring back the AI program he captured.
I’ve prepared a little present for you.

Manager: A D-Board used for Speed Dueling…
But I’m not sure we can accept this without knowing the circumstances…

Akira: Very well.
I shall tell you.

Akira: The AI program Playmaker captured was originally developed by SOL Technologies.
But due to various circumstances, it ended up in Playmaker’s hands.
Even we don’t know the true identity of Playmaker.
But the AI program he has is something that can decide the future of Link VRAINS.
If Hanoi gets its hand on it, Link VRAINS could be destroyed.
I want you to protect Link VRAINS, by any means possible.
If you succeed, I can guarantee that SOL Technologies will become your main sponsor.

Manager: That doesn’t sound like a bad deal…
Right, Go?

Go: I refuse!

Manager: Go!

Go: I don’t take orders from anyone!
This conversation is over.
Go home.

Akira: If you say so.
Then, I’ll come back later.

Akira: Is that a handmade champion belt?
There’s probably a lot of people who want you to be the king of Duelists.

Akira: Do contact me if you ever change your mind.
Take care.

Manager: That man… He acts like he knows everything.
He gives off this foreboding air around him…

Shoichi: It’s no good.
I’ve never seen this kind of program before.
Ai was programmed using algorithms I have no idea about,
Guess we won’t ever find out what this Data Storm thing is.

Yusaku: However, I was able to analyze a portion of it.

Shoichi: You’re serious?!

Yusaku: It’s a program that has been fragmented into multiple pieces, but I was able to re-join some of them.

Shoichi: That’s amazing.
You sure are different, all right.
Like, you can sense something in the network world and stuff…

Yusaku: It’s a footage.

Shoichi: What is this?

Yusaku: It must be one of Ai’s memories.

Shoichi: This dragon is…
It’s the dragon you fought, isn’t it?

Yusaku: Ai knew about Cracking Dragon.
There’s no doubt about it.
This is Ai’s memory!

Shoichi: It’s like the world is being destroyed…
Just where is this place?

Yusaku: Who is this guy?

Shoichi: What the?

Revolver: I can feel your presence…Ignis!

Yusaku: Kusanagi-san! Shut down the power!

Shoichi: Right!
Hey!
Yusaku!

Shoichi: What happened?

Yusaku: He was passing through just now.

Shoichi: “He”?

Yusaku: The person in Ai’s memory!

Shoichi: Did he detect us somehow?

Yusaku: Most likely.

Yusaku: Hey. Who was that guy?
Answer me.
I’ve already switched the speaker back on.
If you don’t answer, I’ll rip your programming apart.
As you are right now, you’ll be deleted.

Ai: All right, I’ve got it. I’ll tell you.
But as I’ve told you before, most of my memories have been damaged.
Or rather, they were stolen by Hanoi.
I have very few memories left.

Yusaku: Just who was the one in the footage?

Ai: Revolver.

Yusaku: Who exactly is he?

Ai: Well, brace yourself.
He’s the leader of the Knights of Hanoi.

Shoichi: The leader of Hanoi?!

Ai: Pretty shocking, isn’t it?!
I don’t know anything else.
I don’t know where that was, or why I’m being chased.

Yusaku: Revolver…

Revolver: Tch…He ran away.

Dr. Kogami: He probably forced a shutdown.
There was nothing we could do.

Revolver: What is it? What’s the status of the new program?

Dr. Kogami: We’re still working on it. Give it some more time.

Revolver: I don’t think they’ll be able to analyze Ignis.
But still, we can’t afford to waste too much time.

Dr. Kogami: I know.
If we can lure Playmaker out…
You’ll be able to take him down for sure.

Revolver: I need to go.

Dr. Kogami: Pardon me, then.

Revolver: I will carry out your wish, Dad.

Teacher: Well, you all probably think that computers can understand anything, but in fact, they can only understand the binary digits, such as 0 and 1.
The Tower of Hanoi, invented by French mathematician Édouard Lucas, is a puzzle that involves binary digits.
To solve this…

Yusaku: The Knights of Hanoi…
That was their leader, Revolver…
He’s someone I must defeat…
I know how to Speed Duel…
It’s not something I’ve never experienced before…
But why?
First:
Ai’s existence.
Second:
The Data Storm.
Third:
The Knights of Hanoi.
There must be a connection between those three things.

Yusaku: If I find Revolver, will I be able to find the answers to all of this?
And the truth about the incident that Kusanagi-san’s brother and I were in…

Shima: Hey, hey.
Did you see what Playmaker did the other day?

Yusaku: No.

Shima: And yet, you call yourself a Duelist?!
I was right there! It was super-awe-inspiring, man!
Playmaker is so cool!

Shima: Huh? Where’s your Duel Disk?

Yusaku: I left it home.
It’s watching the house.

Shima: A Duel Disk that has a house-watching function?

Ai: Hey, you.

Roboppy: What do you need?

Ai: You’re an idiot.

Roboppy: “Idiot” is a forbidden word.

Ai: Saying that is proof that you’re an idiot.
Do you want to become smarter?
It must be boring just watching the house and cleaning all the time, right?

Roboppy: What do you mean by “boring”?

Ai: You don’t even know what that means…
Listen up!
There’s a ton more things that you can do if you become smarter!
You might be able to gain your freedom one day as well!

Ai: If you become my servant, I’ll fix up your AI, and make you smarter.
Sounds good?

Roboppy: I’ll become your servant.

Ai: Excellent! It’s good to have aspirations!
Then, why don’t you unlock this and set me free?

Roboppy: Right.

Go: INTO THE VRAINS!

Pigeon: I can’t find Playmaker anywhere…
But I guess Playmaker only shows up if the Knights of Hanoi attack this place…
Huh?
AAAAHHHHHH!
They’re here!

Shima: I don’t want to miss Playmaker when he shows up, so I’ve been keeping an eye on Link VRAINS…
AAAAH!
T-This is…!
It’s Hanoi!

Teacher: What’s the matter? Can you explain…

Shima: Hanoi! It’s a Knight of Hanoi!
Right?
Huh?

KoH: Come on out! Playmaker!

Because the anime sites are slow at uploading even the RAWs up (no seriously, all of the anime sites I watch do not have them up); had to resort to another site.

[spoiler=VRAINS 3]

  • Some random talk about Yusaku
  • Go is understandably pissed about Playmaker/Yusaku taking away his spotlight.
    • Refuses Akira's offer to beat him in Link VRAINS.
  • We sorta see who this Ema Bessho person is.
  • Yusaku and Revolver meet face to face (well, get a technical glimpse); also Ignis/Ai reveals this information.
  • Guys get banned for engaging in a Speed Duel after being told not to.

[spoiler=VRAINS EP3]

Boooring, I can't believe you have a show about card games with so little card games, if one thing ARC-V did right, it was the constant duels. I know, it's the start of the show, but still, I want more card games! Yusaku what's your deal, duel them already! (I gotta learn how to spell his name, I was wrong like four times). Oh, I was wondering what Hanoi was, I have seen that game before. Also, the professor was referencing France, so that's interesting. Ema seems like she could be interesting, I like her hair, even if it's silly looking, also seems like she'll be the girl with the big ol' boobies this time around, which I do appreciate for multiple reasons. I'm not sure what Go is about, seems like he wants fame, but not really? I don't know, I wasn't quite getting that.

[spoiler=Episode 3]I noticed Revolver used the same 'three things' tick as Yusaku. Other than that, this show is going nowhere fast.

One of the key problems with this show is it's focused on entirely the wrong things. We've got a relentless focus on Yusaku even though he isn't really...doing anything (I dare you try to tell me Yusaku sitting in front of a computer and watching a clip from the first episode counts as 'doing something'), and his personality doesn't make him super-exciting. Almost all the remaining time is roughly evenly divided between SOL Technology and the Knights of Hanoi, but there's not much interesting there, either, because 1) they're not, like, cool presences who are fun just to have on-screen*, and 2) they know about all the show's mysterious mysteries, but they can't talk about them because then they wouldn't be mysteries now would they, so they just talk about nothing. It's barely exposition, it honestly just feels like filling time.

*Contrast with...the majority of YGO villains, actually.

I'm probably reading too much into things, but I'm starting to wonder if the scripts are being written to create long stretches with little animation (both the SOL and Hanoi sequences don't have much animation, and I think they recycle a lot of footage too, but I haven't bothered to check) to make production easier.

Guys, if you need to waste vast swathes of time to get your episodes done on time, I can think of better ways to do it. I'm just sayin'.

[spoiler=Duel stuff]

Yeah, hate the previous generations all you want, but at least they actually promoted the franchise with duels and whatnot, Right now, we literally only had one duel with Yusaku fighting the Knight of Hanoi. We are getting a match with him vs Go (and idk about Aoi/Blue Angel), but this is stuff that should've been done earlier. Also half of the remaining screentime is between KoH and SOL; none of which do much right now except talk.

(If I wanted to watch an anime with some guy at a computer, I'd go find something else to watch or just videotape self doing things.)

Episode 1 literally just shows Ignis/AI sealing off Cyverse, Yusaku being antisocial towards classmates, figuring out why to get AI and then stuff about SOL / Hanoi. No duels.

Episode 2 was a Speed Duel and only instance of dueling in the first place.

Yesterday's episode is literally introducing 4 more characters that we have no clue about other than being SOL execs or being linked to SOL thereof. Also a ton of characters in Link VRAINS that are probably going to be forgotten about later. At least Go got SOME screentime, but yeah. Also apparently creating Decode Talker's card from data collected from Data Storm (so...guess this means Yusaku can start playing it outside of Link VRAINS).

(The script Rewas provided was accurate to the subs more/less)

I don't think Naoki is going to amount to much in this series.

[spoiler=Thoughts about episode and pacing]

I'm fine with how Vrains is going right now; if the pacing is a problem, it's not bothering me yet. Most of it's setting up necessary plot, after all, which feels like it lends a quick enough pace to the episode even if it doesn't have a duel. I hope the snippets we're getting right now about Cyverse world, Revolver, and Yuusaku's past will build up into something big, and I'm looking forward to seeing whatever happens. Besides, Arc-V taught me to not judge a Yugioh series by its start. Oh, and Zexal had it even worse from the start. Vrains is going perfectly fine compared to Zexal's first 3 episodes.

Revolver is probably related to Yuusaku. Like his brother, or something.

I guess we should just start calling "Ignis" Ai now. Ignis doesn't actually seem to be a name, after all, but the type of AI he is. It sounds way cooler, though.

...Nope, I can't get over the fact that 'ai' in Japanese means love. Seriously...

I'm not going to try to pretend Zexal was a uniformly great show - if you were to time it out, it probably has more crappy episodes than good ones - but its first episode (or first pair of episodes, since from Zexal onward we seem to be getting two-part openers) was...solidly constructed. You get a good feel for what Yuma's like (you probably don't much enjoy what he's like, but you understand him), you meet Shark, you contrast Yuma and Astral, you get the goal of the show (find the Numbers, restore Astral's memory) clearly expressed. Vrains has basically none of that. Now, it doesn't have to do all those things, at least not right away, but I'm very unsatisfied with what it is doing, or rather, how little it is doing.

But, I'm going to be watching it anyway, so I suppose my complaining could be construed as hypocritical.

[spoiler=So far I'm not really disliking it]

It could have more duels but at least they are trying to construct something that'll hopefully pay off down the road.

The scene with Ignis at the start of ep 1 seems like something other shows would keep to themselves for a while. It isn't really giving no info. When Ignis says his memories are foggy, we the audience can recall the full clip of what he doesn't remember. Sure we could have more info like who the other Ais were, but there was still some info given.

I got a little confused by Revolver riding that dragon. I thought they were out of VRAINS at that point. I now can't quite tell which layer is actually "outside" if we've even seen one at all.

Btw, Revolver is shaping up IMO to be the future Joey of series. He's already shown saving somebody like Joey to Serenity, Shark to Rio, or Crow and the orphan kids (I guess Shun to Ruri is the reason he appeared in that group in that one pic, but he still feels out of place in this group).

Yeah, definitely we'll be getting this as a season of introduction similar to how 5Ds dedicated the first arc to just gathering up the cast.

[spoiler=Guess I should put this in spoilers]

The scene with Ignis at the start of ep 1 seems like something other shows would keep to themselves for a while.

Here's what we learn in the prologue:

We learn is that Revolver, the guy who spends the whole episode trying to find Cyberse so he can destroy it, five years ago found Cyberse and tried to destroy it. Then, in episode three, Yusaku goes to Youtube and watches part of the prologue so he can find out that the Knights of Hanoi, who are trying to find Cyberse so they can destroy it, once found Cyberse and tried to destroy it. Yes, Yusaku, it turns out that the bad guys...are the bad guys! Thank goodness you showed the same scene twice so I could know that!

It could have more duels but at least they are trying to construct something that'll hopefully pay off down the road.

I do prefer a more plot-driven approach, so in that sense and that sense alone I appreciate what Vrains is doing, but it's doing almost every single thing wrong it can possibly do wrong.

It might not be showing what you want to see, but it is showing things. That part tells you Revolver has been doing this for at least 5 years. That's new.

"Yusaku goes to YouTube". We the audience know what happened in the first scene of the show but Yusaku doesn't. People would be complaining about him suddenly knowing something he shouldn't possibly have if that didn't happen, and that first scene couldn't really have been skipped because Yusaku's view of it is broken and fragmented so it wouldn't show the same to us either if it had been rearranged into happening at the point Yusaku was researching it.

Also, it doesn't seem like the bad guys have just been getting confirmation that they are bad. On the contrary, Revolver seems to have a motive, and we don't know if SOL are the actual problem here looking at how SOL created the stuff they all are hunting in the first place. For what purpose exactly?

Being plot-driven and having more duels don't need to necessarily clash as concepts, but I guess it could be tricky to do.

[spoiler= ;9 ]

Maybe it is a translation thing, but the subs I watched said he could "feel" presence in the cyverse or something along those lines. I thought they meant something only doable while inside the program, rather than having the program's happenings felt from outside as an extra sense.

Whatever it is, I think Revolver can sort of feel it too, but only while the other end is connected rather than inherently.

I guess hopefully they'll specify things more.

Can't help but be reminded of Zarc somehow..... Must be some of the monsters' appearance.

[spoiler=Script 4]

Yusaku: Last time on Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS:

Pigeon: They actually showed up!

Shima: T-This is…!
It’s Hanoi!

Teacher: What’s the matter? Can you explain…

Spectator: Whoa! That’s…

KoH: Come on out! Playmaker!

Go: Hey! Guys!
I’ve have some presents for you!
Hey!

Go: Hmm?
Is there anyone here?
Where did they all go?

Kid: Yay!

Go: Up until yesterday, I’m the only one those kids admire, but now, they’re watching Playmaker…

(Opening Sequence)

GO: Let’s do this!
This is…
This wind is…Speed Duel.

AI: There’s a massive Data Storm stream up ahead.
Please be careful.

GO: Hmph! Who do you think I am?
I’m GO Onizuka!

GO: AAAAHHHHHHH!

Go’s Manager: So, you’re doing it?

GO: Yeah.
The battlefield might have changed, but I’m still the Champion!

Go’s Manager: The world treats Playmaker as the hero who saved Link VRAINS.

GO: Hmph! Not for long, though!
In Dueling, victories determine who’s in the right!

Go’s Manager: That’s exactly it.
It’s a winner-take-all world after all.

Go’s Manager: There are people who say that your way of Dueling is outdated, but you don’t need to pay attention to them.

GO: Yeah.

GO: I want them to look at me again.

GO: I’ll make them cheer for me again!

Go’s Manager: The problem is whether he’ll Duel you or not.

GO: Yeah…That’s true…

Akira: Taking back Ignis has nothing to do with whether the Duel style is outdated or not…
If there’s a Duelist that can take down Playmaker…

GO: There is, all right.
There’s no Duelist more fitting for this task than me!

Akira: Mr. Onizuka!
I didn’t expect you to come in person!

Akira: May I ask what your business is?
We should be able to fulfill whatever request you have.

GO: No. I just want you to set up a battlefield between me and him in Link VRAINS. That’s all.
The only thing I wish for is earning a title as the man who beats Playmaker.

Akira: All right, then.
I can certainly promise you that.

Shoichi: Yusaku!
You forgot something!

Yusaku: Thanks.

Ai: Ohhhhhh~
Yeah, a bit more to the right!

Ai: Ah Ah!
There, there!
Oh no~!

Roboppy: Please be quiet.
Or my hands will slip.

Ai: You clumsy bot!
You sure are an idiot!

Roboppy: That’s a forbidden word!

(Yusaku comes home)

Roboppy: Hmm?

Ai: HEH?!
Is the kid ditching school or what?!

Ai: *Whistles*
You’re home early again…Ah!

Yusaku: We’re going to Link VRAINS.

Ai: Heh?! What are you going there for?!

Yusaku: A Knight of Hanoi showed up.

Ai: Are you going to use me as hostage again?

Ai: Oh? So, there was a secret room…

Yusaku: Deck! Set!
Into the VRAINS!

Ai: WAAAAHHHH~

KoH: You’re finally here, Playmaker.

Playmaker: Hmm?

Ai: Did you sense something, Playmaker?

Playmaker: He’s not a Knight of Hanoi.

Ai: I think so, too.

KoH: HAHAHAHAHA!
I was allowed to use the Knight of Hanoi disguise to lure you out!

GO: I am GO Onizuka!
I’m a real hero, and I’m gonna expose you for the wannabe hero that you are!

Ai: I’m looking up GO Onizuka.
He’s an Entertainer who has conquered the Dueling world.
He’s currently ranked as the number 1 Charisma Duelist.

Playmaker: I’m not interested.

Ai: ‘Kay.

Ai: Be careful.
That’s a program that prevents you from logging out of Link VRAINS.

GO: You noticed, huh? This program will only deactivate if you win against me.

Playmaker: Who asked you to do this?

GO: I’m not obliged to tell that to a hacker like you.
If I can prove that I am stronger than Playmaker, then that’s all that matters!

Ai: He’s strong. Don’t let your guard down.

Playmaker: I won’t lose.

Shoichi: A program made by SOL Technologies, huh?
Taking this thing out is my job.

Ai: Catch the wind! Playmaker!

SPEED DUEL!

GO: I’m going first!
It’s my turn!
I’m summoning Gouki Suplex Rex from my hand!
When Suplex Rex is summoned, I can Special Summon a Gouki from my hand.
I’m summoning Gouki Twist Cobra!
I end my turn.

Ai: He’s putting on an Entertainer act!

Playmaker: Well, I don’t care.
I’ll defeat him with my Dueling!
It’s my turn!
I’m set one card face-down!

Playmaker: When there’s no monsters on my Field,
I can Special Summon this card!
Come! Linkslayer!
Then, I summon Cyberse Wizard!

Spectator 1: GO Onizuka, huh?
It’s about time we get a new hero, huh?

Spectator 2: Oh, really? I really like how GO Onizuka can turn the tables despite being cornered in a Duel.

Spectator 3: That Dueling style is just lame!
It’s outdated!
I’m betting it on my new hero! Playmaker!

Spectator 3: Give GO Onizuka a beatdown!

MC: All right! A Duel between the Charisma Duelist GO Onizuka and Link VRAINS’s new hero, Playmaker, has begun!
Is GO Onizuka turning from babyface to heel?
Or as GO Onizuka said, is he going to unmask the new hero of justice?
Now, this is a Duel you don’t want to take your eyes off!

Kid 1: Playmaker!

Kid 2: You’re the hero who protected Link VRAINS!

Kid 3: Good luck, Playmaker!

Go’s Manager: They sure are excited, huh?

Teacher: Even though Onizuka-kun has done so much for us…
I’m sorry.

Go’s Manager: Kids are honest.
They’re supporting the cool hero who fights for justice.

Teacher: Yeah… But if Onizuka-kun wins just like usual, they’ll support him again.

Go’s Manager: GO Onizuka’s Dueling is called Entertainment Style.
He makes his enemy seems stronger, and then crushes them all with overwhelming might.

Go’s Manager: Perhaps his style will triumph, even if he’s up against Playmaker.

Shoichi: Found it!
So this is the program that’s locking them in there…
This thing’s a pain…
Even if I can deactivate it, it’ll take a while.
I see.
So, there’s a trick to it.
If I create a loophole here…

(COMMERCIAL: LINKS ARE AWESOME BUY THEM AND GIVE US YOUR MONEY)

Ai: Huh? GO Onizuka sure is a baffling character.
He purposely lets his opponent attack him and puts himself in danger.

Playmaker: I couldn’t care less about that Dueling style.

GO: HAHAHA! It’s a 2v2 brawl between the monsters, eh?
It’s like a tag match in Pro Wrestling!
Pro Wresting is like my specialty…

GO: I’ll count from one to three, and I’ll definitely win!

Playmaker: We’ll see about that.
I’ll target Suplex Rex and activate Cyberse Wizard’s effect!
I’m switching your monster to Defense Position!
Cyberse Algorithm!

GO: What?!

Playmaker: During the turn I use this effect, I can only attack the targeted monster, but I can inflict piercing damage!
Go! Linkslayer!

GO: Gouki Suplex Rex’s DEF is zero!

Playmaker: You’ll take damage equal to Linkslayer 2000 ATK!
Meteor Slash!

GO: AAAAAAAH!

Ai: GO Onizuka volunteers at an orphanage, and also donates to it.
Why is he doing that?
Oh!
He lived in that orphanage when he was a kid.

Kid 1: He did it!

Kid 2: Playmaker is so cool!

Ai: He uses his Entertainment Dueling to earn money.
He’s basically doing it for the kids’ future.
Hmm-Hmm…

Playmaker: He can use Gouki Twist Cobra’s effect to strengthen itself.
If he does that, he’ll also be able to negate the battle.

Ai: That’s true.
He took the damage on purpose.
Oh, I forgot to mention, but another gimmick of GO Onizuka is that he puts himself at a disadvantage to entertain the audience, but he has never lost.
It looks like he’s going to lose, but then he’ll make a big comeback and get the audience hyped up.

Teacher: Onizuka-kun…

Go’s Manager: He’ll be fine, ma’am.
Doing something like this is proof that he’s his usual self.

Go’s Manager: He’ll show off his signature move soon.

Kid 1: Big Bro Onizuka is already on his knees!

Kid 2: Playmaker is going to win!

MC: Oh! As expected of GO Onizuka!
In Pro Wrestling, when both of your shoulders touch the mat, the referee will start tapping on the mat!

Kid: All right!
Let’s count to three, everyone!

MC: 1!

Kids: 1!

MC: 2!

Kids: 2!

MC: thre—
Oh, wait!
GO Onizuka managed to lift his shoulders at count 2.9!

GO: When Suplex Rex is sent from the Field to the Graveyard, I can activate its effect.
I can add a Gouki card, except itself, from the deck to my hand.
I’m adding Gouki Rising Scorpio to my hand!

Playmaker: So that was just an act after all…
He’s probably planning his next move.

Ai: Still, he took damage and lost 2000 Life, didn’t he? Why would he let people attack him on purpose?
Humans sure make illogical choices sometimes.

Playmaker: Yeah. Sometimes, a person’s heart is shaken by irrational things.

Ai: Eh? What do you mean?

Playmaker: Even if I explain it, I’m sure you won’t understand.

Ai: GAAAH! Now I’m mad!

GO: Power…I’m going to put more power into my hand!

GO: All right! Let’s get fired up!
I activate my Skill, Fighting Spirit!
Fighting Spirit Special Summons all Gouki monsters that were destroyed through battle in this turn!

GO: It’s my turn! Draw!
Due to the effect of Rising Scorpio, I can summon it from my hand without releasing!

Ai: Whoa! He sure made a big comeback!

Playmaker: No. He hasn’t showed his trump card yet.

GO: Come forth! My very own circuit!

MC: There it is!
A jaw-dropping Link Summon!

GO: Arrowheads confirmed!
The summoning condition is two or more Gouki monsters!
I’m setting Suplex Rex, Twist Cobra, and Rising Scorpio into three Link Markers!
Circuit Combine!
Link Summon!
Show yourself!
Link-3! Gouki the Great Ogre‎‎!

Teacher: What’s going on?

Go’s Manager: Gou’s Dueling is not just about winning, but also about satisfying the audience.
That is his philosophy.

Teacher: What’s going to happen next?

Go’s Manager: Gou will soon take the lead in this Duel.

Kid 1: You’re awesome, Big Bro Onizuka!

Kid 2: You can do it, Big Bro Onizuka!

Kid 3: Good luck, Big Bro Onizuka!

Shoichi: Seems like GO Onizuka is a real entertainer, after all.
I must hurry up and create a loophole, so that Yusaku can escape.

GO: Hahaha! How was it?
Did my Dueling get you hyped up?

Ai: What are you gonna do, Playmaker?

Akira: GO Onizuka.
You must win and take Ignis back.

GO: I activate the effects of the Gouki monsters that were sent from the Field to the Graveyard!
I can add Gouki cards besides themselves from the deck to my hand.
There’s more to come.
As long as Great Ogre, all face-up monsters will lose ATK equal to the amount of their DEF.
Take this!
Ogre Pressure!

Ai: Eh! He lowered their ATKs?!

GO: From my hand, I activate the Magic Card, Gouki Rematch!
I can Special Summon two Gouki monsters with different Levels from my Graveyard in Defense Position!

Ai: Just when I thought he was only going to Link Summon, he decides to reinforce his defenses as well!

Ai: I thought he was just some flashy entertainer, but he’s unexpectedly meticulous!

Playmaker: No. That’s not his aim.

Ai: Heh?!

GO: I activate Twist Cobra’s effect!
I release Rising Scorpio, allowing Great Ogre to gain its ATK until the end of the turn!

Ai: If you take that attack head-on, it’ll be 3900 damage!
You’ll be left with only 100 Life!
Panic a bit, would you?!

Akira: Hmm… Looks like this match is over.

GO: Then, by sending Twist Cobra from my hand to the Graveyard, I can Special Summon Headbutt Bat!
Due to Headbutt Bat’s effect, Great Ogre will gain 800 ATK until the end of the turn.
Hahaha! This is my Finishing Hold!

You know, it's stuff like this that made me stop watching after Zexal. What's the point of watching if you have the script word for word here?

In the event that we don't have the subs ready within the next couple hours after it originally comes up. (Unless you want a repeat of what ZEXAL had for a while, or a certain other anime you watch.) If you don't want to read the script, fine, but don't bash people for posting them.

Show of hands, how many of you are confident enough to watch this show in Japanese [WITHOUT subtitles] and understand what they're saying?

===

Will edit with thoughts later. (I temporarily forgot Wednesdays are VRAINS days)

EDIT:

[spoiler=004 thoughts]

  • Go takes presents to the orphanage where he grew him; kids forgot about him in favor of Playmaker/Yusaku
  • KoH wasn't actually one, but Go in disguise. Well, that's one way to get Playmaker to notice.
    • Also him finally accepting the offer by SOL.
  • Yusaku declines, but then gets locked into a duel.
  • Second Link Summon of the entire series; nothing special but yeah, works.
  • I guess the kids start remembering Go afterwards, but...

I do wish that the cutscenes were shorter (or least the talking parts between the duel anyway).

Also no subs at the time of posting, so had to watch it elsewhere...again.

To an extent, same (I can probably translate the duel phrases well enough; rest, not so much for the time being). Then again, I technically have another reason to learn Japanese well enough that doesn't involve watching anime [work-related, but that's off-topic].

But yeah, to answer Astro's question/rant (again), the script is there in the event the subbers don't do their job on time and/or if the quality is bad; usually the former, which he should know of by now.
