Winter 2017 Anime

Recommended Posts

Nothing here that sounds super interesting to me besides Digimon Tri 4 and Onihei. Ill look into Little Witch Academia show, Kemono Friends (even if the title is a lie because theyre actually kemonomimi), Nyanko Days, and Spiritpact but yeah once again the anime season doesnt have much that I look forward to. Still waiting on that Klonoa movie, hope that itll be out next season.

Sequels

Blue Exorcist 2-Apparently they're ignoring S1's filler ending? This could set a new precedent on ignoring previous adaptations with axed endings. Soul Eater 2, Bones?

Kono Suba 2-This one was really funny; I'm glad it's getting another cour. I haven't really had an anime that made me laugh consistently like this before.

Rewrite 2-Because the first season was terribad and I hate myself.

Rakugo 2-Its first season was secretly Winter's AOTS, don't let ERASED fool you. Hyped for this one.

Series

Not gonna watch Chaos;Child. I think Steins;Gate was a one-hit wonder; I've heard horror stories about Occultic;Nine this season, heard bad and mediocre things about Robotic;Notes, and Chaos;Head wasn't very fun.

Little Witch Academia-I really enjoyed the LWA OVAs and I'm expecting Trigger will treat this with lots of care. This should be special.

Masamune's Revenge-I'm oddly intrigued by its premise, kinda want to see where it goes. I'll probably wait a few eps for general feedback, but I'm hoping this is good.

Maybe eIDLIVE? Same writer as Reborn, but general ratings for it on manga sites are low and I haven't heard anyone talk about it. But who knows, maybe just not enough people know about it. I didn't even know it existed until shortly before the anime announcement.

Never watched Steins;Gate, so I might not watch Chaos;Child if it's gonna be somewhat similar.

Rakugo was big with the more elite anime crowd and has quite the cult following as well as being nominated for Crunchyrolls Anime of the Year award. It might not be the most popular show out there but secretly the best is definitely not the best description, cuz its hardly a secret man.

I must've been looking in the wrong places then; I only heard Rakugo getting more talked about within the past few months. I'd say now people are much more aware of it, but I didn't get that vibe while it was airing.

Been fairly neglectful of this season due to lack of time:

Akiba Strip - The presentation style feels really cheesy, in a sorta old 90's style, I love that they took this approach but I'm behind on this too. Might catch up later. It's a bit lacklustre but it's definitely within my tastes. Also Tamotsu Denkigai is some lame pun I just know it, I just don't know what it is.

Chaos;child - Half of the first ep is a summary of the entirety of chaos head that already couldn't work with 12 eps, I lost hope and decided it really is better to just wait for the VN for this one too.

Demi-chan - Cute and inoffensive. Still caught up but I have a feeling I'll be an episode or two behind around halfways through.

Hand Shakers - Never felt so confused by an ep 1. Dropped and didn't look back.

Konosuba - It's more of the same old, no problems here.

Kuzu no Honkai - It's trashy drama but god how often do you actually see that in anime? There's a lot of manga that qualifies as trashy melodrama but that feels far rarer in anime, idk. Caught up.

Masamune-kun - It's sorta stradding the line between being alright and being quite nice, but since I'm caught up it must be doing something alright.

Seiren - Amagami but not as good. One ep behind, will try to catch up soon but so far no girl looks cuter than Ai or even Kaoru.

Rakugo - AOTS

Senki - Sorta disappointed since I heard this was gonna be some masterpiece. It's a fairly mediocre, mid-tier show that's sorta fun but it's nothing special. One ep behind here.

Blue Exorcist Kyoto Saga-Alright so far, more of the same from season 1. This should set a precedent for ignoring axed endings from previous adaptations.

KonoSuba 2-Also more of the same, which is stupendous.

Little Witch Academia-My favorite things about Trigger shows is the heart behind them and this has that in spades. Nice to see a G-rated anime (so far at least) of good quality.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid-Pretty relaxing show, I like it.

Rakugo 2-Different from season 1 in a good way, probably will be AOTS.

Debating on whether to pick up Scum's Wish or Masamune.

Hand Shakers - Never felt so confused by an ep 1. Dropped and didn't look back.

Fairly straightforward I found. Like, so much so that I can't even explain it it's so simple. Maybe it would be easier in 23rd century Japanese off Siskan...

GUY JOB TO FIX DEVICE

FIND GIRL

GIRL WAKES

OMG WHERE R WE?

CHAINS APPEAR ATTACKS NO STOP

FINDS OTHER PAIR

NIMROD ACTIVATE

GEARS APPEAR

IT MESHES INTO SWORD

WIN

DOCTOR OR WHAT HAVE U EXPLAINS ESSENTIALLY THAT

ALSO YOU CAN HAVE WISH IF BEAT OTHER "HAND SHAKERS" (with proper English pronunciation)

Though he must have shown up before they got whisked away, or dude wouldn't have known that he couldn't let go of girl, because reasons. Well, you know, she would die and all that, real flimsy stuff. And actually, after introducing the next Hand Shackers in ep 2, ep 3 actually goes into their story, unlike ep 1 did with M girl and Gammon lookalike (with same seiyuu).

So there is THAT, but I mean you would be right in that it is kind of trashy, so I got way more into it than I should have, but at least I can see the reasoning behind everything. The other downside is that after it started, I've so far seen just a bit more complaint about the visuals. The 2D and 3D mix, as ironic as it is, just doesn't Mesh. OP reminds me of a worse Daze at points, too. Too much of a guilty pleasure.

[spoiler=But to go shorter for everything else I'm watching:]

Gabriel DropOut - By and far seems like the least trashy one I enjoy, and most certainly enjoy the most. A slight twist on a proven classic. Pffft.

Urara Meirochou - 1st ep was a bit iffy, but if I know my cute girls, it turned into quite a bit more than just that. They have their worthwhile dreams, especially Chiya of course, coming all that way to see the mom she's never really known before.

Akiba's Trip - Nothing to disagree on with this, cheesy and I like it

Demi-chan wa Kataritai - I'm surprised but definitely glad that none of the designs creep me out so far. I should expect one or two considering the whole premise but after how cute it's been that would be a bummer.
BanG Dream! - Not as serious as Eupho, but doesn't seem as lazy as K-On!... hoping for a pleasing in-between, and not that it can't execute much of anything well enough. Surprised it's 25 eps right off the bat.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid - Eh... cute, but I was hoping Kyoani would do this niche a little more justice. It is still slice of life, essentially, after all. I'm not major into monster girls, no, so maybe I shouldn't say they're not, but I am a big fan of Eco, the other dragon girl I know.
Rewrite 2 - Most of the first 2 eps were so somber... with the way the first season ended, to be expected. I must say, I am a big fan of what they did with it, but only because there is another season. They make some good points about existence... but now I'm ready for the Happy End.
ēlDLIVE - I dunno man. This is why I didn't like Blood Lad's anime... it's literally so similar to the manga, that at times it hardly even feels like it's even an anime. I don't necessarily think an anime should follow a manga absolutely exactly, it's another medium after all. Get across the main story, but I'd take a filler at least over it only going on like this. I like most fillers though, so that's probably not the best idea overall.
Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-hen - Was it really that much like this in the first season? I thought this was an action, but I can't really call it an action just yet. I liked the first season, and there are some good developments (which admittedly would not have happened so fast if they did focus on the action), so... maybe it's kind of okay, especially with the smaller highlights here and there if the climax to this arc is good enough for a stopping point.
Kuzu no Honkai - At least it damn well knows how to do drama. Not majorly pissed off at anything, though I kind of should be, there are some moments though. I can't say I overall have been caring about any character, so idk. They did just introduce a couple, then I'm watching the 3rd ep later today.
KonoSuba 2 - I'm enjoying this a bit more than season 1. The OVA was the only episode so far I truly kinda liked in the overall sense though, after that, I am just kind of facepalming at the end of the most recent ep. It's just... humor that works a little less often than it really doesn't for me. Almost exactly like Osomatsu-san, only that one did work almost half the time, so I consider it a bit better.
ChäoS;Child - The only VN I ever finished were the 2 main routes of Muv-Luv Extra. The first part. And it crashed more than it said it would, so I'm waiting for the Vita port or to maybe get it all on Steam if that would work enough on my laptop. Recapping Head is a bad idea unless it's somehow at least a bit longer than the actual show was, which of course, wouldn't be a recap. Right now it's actually showing a bit more potential though, to someone who hasn't read VNs. But as a mystery in particular, that can come crashing down at any moment.
Seiren - If it does pull that complete reset so as to not actually be a harem like I've heard about with Amagami, I dunno if I'll be sticking around. Just doesn't sound like the kind of thing that should work in an anime. Yeah, he's not cheating, but then it feels even weirder, because it's the same anime, the same guy. I just dunno what to think. First girl's even grown on me more than I thought, so if she's just going to disappear...
Fuuka - This is the kind of drama that pissed me off. The beginning especially, since if he was saying he wasn't taking panty shots, you couldn't have at least looked what was on his phone when you were able to grab it? After that, what drama there is is just so annoyingly cliche, but played up to be so much more dramatic that maybe it should be. I mean it kind of is that serious, but still. Somehow got my fav OP of the season so far, though.
I also dropped Piacevole! and Nyanko Days. Yes, they're both just cute shorts, and I recognize them as cute, but they don't have the same impact as most shorts I've seen, weird as that is to say.

Seems like the anime to keep an eye on this season are KonoSuba Season 2, Blue Exorcist Season 2, Tanya, Dragon Maid, Interviews with Monster Girls and Masamune-kun's revenge. And of course waiting/paying to see if Little Witch Academia and Scum's Wish are any good as well. ACCA might explode at some point too.
