The Blog Formerly Known As The Comiket Report ft. 2k16mitch

I initially began this blog to write about my still fondly remembered trip to Comiket in Winter 2016. However, just two months later and I have become bored of it (and I have finished doing so anyway) and will now restyle this thread into something more general. Therefore the change in title was needed. With this I can now post more meaningless things here, which I shall do so once I've gained the motivation to do more than update the blog name.

[spoiler=Original intro]

COMIC MARKET 91 BLOG  also my general thoughts later on i guess

PLM9GaB.jpg?1

Filled with random pictures to keep your attention

Comic Market/Comiket is an event in Japan where fans gather and sell fanmade material twice a year. I happened to be able to attend this year's Winter Comiket's 91st iteration and had a very good time. Unfortunately right afterwards I caught a cold either from some random Japanese person on the train back or from exhausting myself too much, and am still trying to recover from it as of this writing. Still, was worth it.

Now I know a handful amount of you are weebs and are interested in コミケ(Comiket)(funk yeah, moonrunes) so I thought I should make a blog about it here so that I can actually be writing something.

I'll try to make this fairly accessible to people who don't care about this sort of sheet. I'll try to make you care about this sort of sheet but I'm not a good writer, don't put too much faith in me.

Catalog:

[spoiler=Entry 0]EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE
Right, let's stop there and explain a bit more on what Comiket is and how it works first. I need some filler before I actually write down my experience there. So firstly...

The face of an intelligent(?) anime girl pondering

Q. Isn't selling fanmade material illegal?
 A. Well, yes.

PCkWfuZ.jpg

But often companies appreciate the free exposure, and the spirit of the event isn't to make profit as much as it is trying to share your creations and deepest fantasies with other people. Of course, this spirit isn't adhered to all the time but in general that's the driving force behind Comiket. And companies kinda accept that.

They even participate as well and set up their own corporate booths that sell official, overpriced merch. They also recruit any promising new blood they see participating. Really, everyone wins here. it's technically illegal but most of the time people aren't pressing charges. It's a fairly comfortable grey area they're in (and it's another thing that's threatened by the TPP so you should totally oppose that by the way).

lu8Bex6.jpg?1

Can't think of a way to segue-way into the next part so have this. also i can't be arsed to find a worksafe image for the next part

The term 同人誌(Doujinshi) refers to fan-published fan magazines often of the pornographic kind. They are the main draw of Comiket. People draw their porn (or non-porn) manga and come sell it here for like, 500 yen ($4) a pop. A fair amount are shittily drawn and aren't very good but some are amazing and people come to buy this stuff for the same reason people consume fanfiction, or porn. There's even original manga on sale here, which doesn't even count as fan manga anymore but are nevertheless pretty good.

rElL24A.jpg

my pitiful music haul

There's 同人音(doujin ongaku), fanmade music, sold in CDs for usually a thousand yen($8.50?) each. Many of these are arranges of video game music but a fair few are completely original. These were actually my main goal going to comiket.

Some also hand make their own little trinkets like key chains or whatever. You can find them there too. And as mentioned, corporate booths are a thing, to sell official merch or announce anime news. These are usually placed a little further away from the rest.

It really just fascinates me how people gather unofficially to sell this sort of thing. It's a wonderful industry, a wonderful example of the free market in action.

9mcNT1s.jpg?1

That is a picture I took on 10:30 AM of the third day, of Tokyo Big Sight (some of you may recall this building from Digimon), the venue where Comiket is traditionally hosted every year. Unfortunately I was a lazy twat and didn't take a lot of pictures but you can get an idea of how packed this event is. This is just the outside, there's way more people inside in the halls. And they're all there to buy porn. Or cosplay.

The Big Sight has seven East halls and four West halls, each of them are already gigantic on their own but for this event all of them are completely filled with people. There's also several other halls but I'm not sure what they are.

As far as I'm aware, West halls, especially 3 and 4, are mostly for corporate stuff while East hall has all that fan-made goodness. Wish I had a picture here but again, I was lazy.

jbPs9e2.png

Yes the saw is real. I've been there.

Comiket is held twice a year, once in summer and once in winter. What happens is right after a comiket finishes, people send in their application forms to the organizers. Aside from the really big circles, most groups (because these are usually not single-handed endeavors) get selected randomly through a lottery, determining whether they are given a spot to sell their stuff or not. The competition's pretty stiff. The selected entrants are usually grouped together depending on what their interests are and gets a spot for one of the three days.

There are 3 days to Comiket:

3YQAe75.png
One day is usually devoted to music, Touhou and Kancolle (video game franchises). For this winter C91 this was the first day.
 fvWooSu.png
One day is devoted to fan manga relating to general anime shows, and BL(boys love. Gay stuff basically). Second day this time.
 B7vKuCQ.png
One more day is usually devoted to porn and original stuff. The third day.

Of course they overlap, especially the porn, but in general they are divided like that. Music in particular is often limited to just that one day so if you missed most of it like I did then you can cry about it.

Y1lUxwu.png?1

Typing all that out took a lot longer than I expected and god I'm hungry now. And this is still just the introduction to the damn event. I don't know, think I'll call it a day for now and actually detail out the days I went there next post.

Treat this entry as a prologue I guess. EPISODE V THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK coming soontm

EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

pr8nbFl.jpg

LET'S DEPART, GENTLEMEN

Suppose three years later you’re in Japan hoping to attend Comiket. You remember reading this really funny well-written blog on some children’s card game forum three years earlier that inspired you to go in the first place. You search through that forum’s archives and find this blog on the first page of the blog section, to see if your fellow soldier Mitch has given you directions.

9vVYR4B.jpg

Because this part will largely sound boring to people who aren’t in Japan I’m putting it in spoilers.

[spoiler=Directions]Depending on where you are you’ll generally want to get to Tokyo station first. This may be a redundant step especially if you’re near a station on the Yurikamome line or the JR Rinkai line where you can get a direct ride to Comiket. But going to Tokyo station first is a fairly failproof first step, and if you’re not familiar with Tokyo’s train lines this is good practice. So get there, Tokyo station, 東京駅へ行け!

RT6dd9Y.png

A view of the outside from the station's south exits. First picture I took of the place.

You have a choice of which station you want to ultimately arrive at. The Kokusai-tenjijo station and the Kokusai-tenjijo-seimon station. They apparently are not the same. You can tell by the extra word at the end of the second one. The path to the seimon station is the more often-used one I hear, but I did not take it. I went to the former Kokusai-tenjijo station instead. Mostly because I did not know the latter, probably shorter option existed.

CY9u6mA.png

Look at this sheet, how do you make sense of this? And this is just the map of the JR lines

For the Kokusai-tenjijo-seimon station route, first you’ll take the Yamanote line (marked green on the above JR map, it's the circular one) train to Shinbashi/Shimbashi (Apologies if you already came to Tokyo on the Yamanote line, which is very likely because anywhere you’re likely to be staying at in Tokyo probably falls on the Yamanote line).

JykwgoS.png

At Shinbashi you’ll take the Yurikamome line which is not on the JR map but can be seen above, to Kokusai-tenjijo-seimon. Yurikamome's a private railway so you'll probably have to get out the ticket gate first and find the relevant one.

It’s really that simple. You really cannot get lost. When in doubt, just follow where the crowd is going, because there will be a crowd and they'll be heading to Comiket as well.

The ‘longer’ path I took was not actually all that much longer than the first way. First you go to the Keiyo line gate ticket which is marked with a red line instead of green on the JR map, and requires a lot of walking even within the train station to even reach for some reason. You ride to Shin-Kiba.

From Shin-Kiba you find the Rinkai line (also a private line) and ride that to Kokusai-Tenjijo. Again, when in doubt, follow the crowd, they’re going to the same place as you.

5TnMjfy.gif

That must've been tiring to read, have some well-animated clumsiness.

With directions done with, there are several other things to keep in mind. Firstly, Comiket opens at 10 A.M.

You should not arrive there at 10 A.M.

cpl6IhM.png

Your options, time wise, are:

  • Before midnight the previous day.
  • At 4 A.M.
  • Or around and after 10:30.

Make no mistake. Just because you’re arriving at Big Sight at ten does not mean you’ll enter it at ten. Big Sight is huge. Comiket is huge. It’s not some random con where a small bunch of dedicated fans go to. EVERYONE goes to Comiket. I saw some old people and people with their little kids and even little kids by themselves. I cannot overstate just how crowded this place will be.

Granted, the majority were still adults looking to wank off, yes.
:526090_key:i forgot these emotes were a thing

You WILL NOT ENTER BIG SIGHT AT TEN UNLESS YOU CAME TO LINE UP MIDNIGHT THE PREVIOUS DAY.

Trains here stop at midnight and resume again at four in the morning, hence why those two times are your options. Also camping out there at midnight is technically not allowed but everyone does it and the tacit agreement there is to not cause any more trouble than what you're already doing. Whichever time you go with, it'll be an uphill battle.

UhmGFhh.jpg

The gradual progression from smiles to frowns as you wait in line. It's not your stage yet

If you’re super casual and just want to enjoy the mood and you don’t really know what’s on sale there, then you should definitely arrive after 10:30 A.M. If you’re really lazy, come in the afternoon. Most of the big things will be gone but the unpopular stuff (the bulk of the event) will still be there for you to ogle and purchase. And more importantly there won’t be a lot of people. At ten everyone'll be trying to enter and there's really no point arriving then.

If you’re somewhat casual and just want the big-name stuff like me,

HnhIph1.jpg

There’s this strange unfairness about the system, where being super casual or really hardcore is not as hard as being what I call the ‘somewhat casual’. If you happen to know the names of the really popular artists and you want to buy their porn, the thing is that everyone knows the names of these really popular artists and want to buy their porn. Unless you’re ready to camp out at Big Sight overnight, you’re not gonna get to all the big circles in time. I’m not funking kidding. Getting there by the first train at 4 A.M may not be early enough.

If you’re super hardcore about Comiket and you’re into everything it has to offer and not just the really popular stuff everyone wants then first train is safe, and heading there at 10:30 is still mostly fair. The popular stuff you missed will be on sale at specialty stores later.

LINvEgg.png

The Riyo Saber doll I did not buy at Comiket. Bought it at Akiba.

WGS6p66.png

it's like thiiiiiiiis thick

There’s also the catalog (that I keep spelling as the catalogue), which is the size of a phonebook and you could kill a man with it, probably. It lists everything that’s on sale for all three days, and includes a map for you to plan your routes too. It’s 2000 yen or $17 a pop and unless you fall in the super casual group, you can treat it as the entrance fee because you need it. There’s an online version but it’s shite. There’s also a DVD version you can buy or rip off from the internet but having the physical thing feels really nice. You really can’t go wrong with the book. If you’re going there without buying anything, buy the catalog.

Did you read that right by the way? Plan your routes? Yes, you’ll need to do that. Get the map out, find which circles you want to buy from and plan out the shortest path to achieving all that. It’s not a problem of distance really, as much as it is time. The less you have to shuffle through crowds and lines, the sooner you can reach your desired booth and have a chance of them not selling out yet.

Cb82Kou.png

See how everyone's walking around this TM booth and no one's lining up because it's funking EMPTY. I heard it sold out in 20 minutes

You can find catalogs sold in specialty stores(Toranoana, Melonbooks, etc.) around a week or two before Comiket, and during the day itself you can probably get them from nearby convenience stores too. And of course they sell it at the venue on the day itself.

SBssxWd.gif

I can’t really stall any longer than this so I’ll go ahead

COMIC MARKET 91 DAY ONE

Now I was on the Shinkansen to Tokyo. I wasn’t already in Tokyo for the first day due to unfortunate timing, that’s not good. The Shinkansen is basically this long fancy bullet train that takes you far. It's the big Japanese thing, along with Sushi and Samurai and sheet. And it's pretty pricey too.

LMqXaiq.png

This picture doesn't really convey how packed the station is tbh, the place is just so damn big you can't capture it all

I arrived at Tokyo Station at 12 or so, so it was already 2 hours past the opening time. It took me another hour of navigating and Google maps to reach my resting place in Asakusa, the part of Tokyo that’s a little less Tokyo and a little more Japan.

bmglx9j.jpg

Took this at night time but Asakusa's mostly this huge-ass temple.

So at that point I was wondering if I should bother to go at all, since the first day was almost over. I was sure everything already sold out. Then I remembered, I intended to meet a real-life acquaintance who was living here so I got in contact with him and we decided we might as well go anyway. Off to the station.

uWhBepc.png

That lady with the sign was blocking Chii-sama's glorious face, how dare she

s4pYOib.png
If you turn to the right, you'll see this SAO banner with the AIDS girl or something, I don't know, I haven't watched S2

mvm85Ye.png

It was p' dark so I didn't take more pictures and now I regret it.

We arrived at 2 and by the time we got inside the building it was probably closer to 2:30 or so.

9mcNT1s.jpg

I’m gonna rehash this photo from the previous post real quick, cuz on the first day it was like this but replace the crowd with a sheet ton of cosplayers. Like funking every big thing was there. I saw Guilty Gear cosplayers and I never expected that. There were lots of the big three, boats, Fate, lots of BL stuff, it was quite amazing to see. I was a tool and didn't pull out my phone for that ;_;

Time for a brief anecdote, not of my own but from someone I talked to. He went to the bathroom during the event (and it's hell to line up for those too) and he saw like, 3 guys dressed up as Feyris from Steins;Gate doing their business.

b7pegWP.png

Maho best S;G girl btw

There were a lot of crossplayers and some of them are really, really convincing, god. I didn't look for them but I'm 100% sure there werea lot of guys dressed up as that one scantily-clad boatslut. Just saying, the men's bathroom'll be a place of revelations should you brave your way in. Lots of girls dressed up as guy characters too.

We got into the East Hall area. I wasn’t familiar with the structure of this place back on the first day so I'll save the explanation for the third day. That day, East Hall was basically the Touhou + Kancolle day. Lots of Touhou, lots of Kancolle, lots of things were sold out. I pretty much walked around for an hour and a half until 4 when they closed. No pictures because they'd be NSFW and more importantly I didn't take them, I was in a rush trying to see everything I could. There sure were a lot of Satori tentacle doujins though...

I walked around and before I realized it it was past four, it was over. The walk all the way back to the station was really packed, really filled with people, and it sure took a while to get on. I took a detour because I asked some other guy to buy me an artbook so I went and got that. I arrived back at my place at like, seven.

xThUPTf.png

In the end, my haul for the first day was this pathetic. Three music CDs(two were from circles I've never heard of before) and two artbooks. The butt one was the one I asked the guy to buy for me, it was only 750 yen even though it was much higher in quality than the other fanbook that costed 1000 yen (although they were both compilation artbooks that already had most of its art posted online anyway). And each album also costed a thousand, what a ripoff. I also bought the catalog back then so that's an extra 2000, and a Youmu keychain that was probably 450 yen or so.

bOjIIXw.gif

Again I'm feeling hungry so I'll wrap it up. Sadly the first day wasn't very eventful for me but I still saw a lot of interesting things. I skipped the second day because it was Yaoi day but I went on the porn day, and since I ran out of side topics to stall with, the next post'll mainly be about just that.

Good golly, and I thought the only existing Satori books are the elementary school kid ones.

That reminds me, my plan back then was to camp through the night (before I ended up cancelling my trip), and I wonder, despite you're not doing it, any kind of tips on what to keep in mind if I aim to do that in the future?

Of course the biggest advice that I know is to stay orderly. You're already breaking the rules and they're still not chasing you out of the venue even though they can, don't give them an excuse to want to do so. You'll also want to stay light because you'll be carrying whatever you have around. A light, foldable chair is ideal, not only for camping out but while waiting in slow lines, either for you yourself or to put your stuff down.

And naturally, it's much worse in the summer, so if you want comfortable(as comfy as camping out at night waiting for porn can be), go in winter. It won't be too cold as long as you're dressed well enough. On the other hand, it's usually summer that has big releases so you'll have to know what you really want.

There's a McDonalds nearby so if you can somehow secure a seat, that's a decent place to rest for a while. In fact it's already customary for people to go to McDonalds to wait for the first train when they miss the last midnight train on regular days.

Lack of Yaoi Day 2 outta 10

Well, to be fair, I learned later that a lot of anime-related fanbooks are also sold day 2, so next time I won't skip it.

EPISODE III : RETURN OF THE KING

UarzQDt.gif

I'm not sure which movie trilogy I prefer actually.

Day 3 of Comiket! It's porn day. Naturally, I was determined to show up early this time. However I wasn't quite that determined enough to line up at four in the morning, much less midnight so, I went around 10:30 instead.

6suZeU5.png

I was far too lazy to do it in the previous post but here is a scientifically accurate map (hand drawn courtesy of myself) of the venue. After going up some stairs and sifting through the crowd at the plaza (there will be lots) you'll reach the entryway, and you either go left for the East halls where most of the event's goods are, or the West halls for the corporate booths.

You can notice some moonrunes scribbled up there, meaning east (it's the same Kanji used for Touhou) and 西 is westward. They're read as 'higashi' ひがし and 'nishi' にし respectively. Sometimes it's 'tou' and 'sai' and some other variant of those though, it's annoying to explain. Anyway there's your two kanji of the day. Now you can read fluent Japanese.

mXwltgP.png

A little note, I drew them that way but the halls were not actually walled from each other, and each of them was the size of a sizable gymnasium. So when I went to say, East Hall 1, it was actually East Halls 1, 3, and 6 all connected to each other and god it was really wide and long and large. Since I had no real hope of getting the big-name stuff I decided to go West. To the West, to the West. West Halls 1 and 2.

qZG8lWD.png

Note that neither of the big shows here were airing yet. Dunno why the Maid Dragon screen said 3.19 though, it's already airing now.

It's filled with booths like the above picture, selling official overpriced merch. It had some of the big-name anime studios and brands but for some reason I remember it was quite a dull floor, as evident by this being my only picture (granted I didn't take a whole lot, which was why I was forced to use a lot of filler anime images in the first two posts. Maybe THAT's why I've been slacking off on finishing this).

Gv5i4VO.jpg

My memory is faulty but I probably bought the hat above at this floor. Ignore the doll, the hat is what matters. The badge is some Falcom-related thing so I'm the only one on this forum who recognizes it so it doesn't matter. The hat. It's what this character wears:

fuka-kazamatsuri-disgaea-4-a-promise-unf

And I knew I just had to have it. Unfortunately it wasn't large enough to fit my head the way it fitted hers and the color is a bit off anyway. Shoddy Japanese merchandise. I took this picture way later and it's the only one I have on hand currently. I could take one of the hat right now but that's kind of a pain and my room's too messy.

iCvdFIK.png

Was almost tempted by the Euphonium goods but I ultimately didn't care for the series beyond being a show I enjoy so, I moved on. I saw one Nanoha stand at the corner advertising their new movie, a Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress stand, an Ufotable stand, pretty much every studio was there. There was also a Diomedea stand in some faraway corner selling Chitose shirts. Like, her shirt.

fKDqiVV.png

Like who doesn't want that? I'm sold, I'm game.

ra,unisex_tshirt,x1000,322e3f:696a94a5d4

Quick google search got me this and this was probably how it actually looked like.

But then they were sold out. They were gone. No egg shirts.

J9mBbD1.png

I then walked up to West Halls 3 and 4. It was probably hard to tell but I'll rehash the map here again.

3KPOHAi.png

The way I drew it might've been misleading, because Halls 3 and 4 were on top of 1 and 2, not adjacent to them. Those weirdly stacked rectangles you see to the side? Those are stairs. That just now was a lie. There were no stairs. There was a funking slope you could walk up. There WERE stairs inside the building but those were reserved. I guess that makes sense but still, we had to walk up a road pavement.  Right outside the building in the parking lot upstairs there was this nice view.

HXG4Pvw.png

Not really sure what that ship is and it's not exactly consolation for walking up a slope but I'll take it.

I went inside.

Xs66FWY.png

Sorry for the blur. Hands were unsteady.

There was a booth selling merch for Fire Emblem's card game. I wasn't even aware there was a blooming TCG scene for Fire Emblem. Look at it, they're selling badges. The art looks terrible. There's no Lyn. It's like the Heroes phone game(although that did have Lyn) a month earlier. Speaking of which, it's been like two weeks now and despite it having more gameplay than other mobile games that come to mind I've pretty much completely stopped touching the game. It's boring. I can't be arsed to get to level 40.

kydZ7EJ.png

This floor the booths were generally not of an anime studio but a merch-making company. They still stuff from a lot of different series. You can see there's some Yuri on Ice keychains on the right, lots of Touken Ranbu, and the posters aren't just for show either although their merch seems to be absent from this picture, but they were on sale too. No Steins;Gate merch though, despite Chaos;Child stuff being on sold. Was hoping to snag myself a Labmem badge if I could.

RLjP1yl.png

More YoI. This sheet was really popular. Maybe I should've posted this picture first. At this point it's also noticeable that my pictures have gotten larger and larger. Been experimenting with what size I should resize these at. In the end, 600x450 seems pretty ideal.

VFiAcdg.png

There was some Danganronpa stuff. Aside from the shirt and keychains and whatever, they had badges of all the characters from both games and the recent anime. Many were sold out which meant the ones that remained were unpopular. Unfortunately this included Mahiru my beloved. Poor girl. No one likes you but me apparently.

2380545-2380543-mahi.jpg

91XYuKZ.png

Look at that jacket.

Other booths I saw was that big Type-Moon one I showed last time, some plastic model companies(Gundam), and a fair few porn game companies (coughlilithcough). There was one big stage for performances but no one was there so I assumed it was either over or it didn't begin yet. I didn't stick around to find out.

That's it for the West Halls and naturally East is next but for some bloody reason I took literally no photos this time. I know it's not exactly a habit of mine to take pictures but still, now I find myself regretting it two months later trying to type up a blog entry.

I was familiar with the sight from Day 1 but there really was nothing else quite like it. East hall, rows and rows of porn and people lining up for them. It must've been lunch by the time I arrived(spent that much time westward) so it was already starting to clear out.

wW9DEj2.png

The easiest way to summarize it was that there were lots of porn of this character.

krKmUtb.png

And her.

62EGLuX.png

And them.

aGtg8rD.png

And her. And the idols. And every goddamn flavor of the week/month/year. Go to your favorite doujin site and search C91 and you'll find plenty(but nowhere near all of the ones on sale this event) of them. You might be lucky and find some of them translated, although for some reason it feels like the translation scene's stagnated lately. I mean, I'm still waiting for Udonya's Monster Hunter thing from last comiket to be translated.

There also weren't many Pokemon books because Sun/Moon came out just a month before, there really wasn't enough time for most people to make a full book, especially considering slots for selling these books are applied for well in advance(the deadline is days after the previous Comiket ends, I hear) and you're meant to specify what series you're drawing porn of so they can balance out the number of series that gets in. Even then, there were a few Lillie books, and a Marron book is translated online(it's great).

lpOGfxI.jpg

I tried to buy one of her books to celebrate her second season airing about two weeks after that particular day but the one circle I approached said that was a display copy and they ran out, and I kinda lost my backbone.

XoSb9N7.jpg

Instead I bought one of her books to celebrate her anime getting a sequel after ten years. The cover's kinda lewd so I can't really show it. At most I happen to have a picture of all three books I bought this event that's propped up in such a way that I can sorta show

A2E28k4.png

Somehow that was literally all the porn I bought from this event. I was sorta running low on money but it does feel like a waste.

After that I went out and took a break, but then discovered the hard way that Comiket ends an hour earlier on the last day and they began packing up even earlier. There was really nothing else left.

And that's it. It was amazing, I still remember those three(really, two) days fondly, and I really want to go back again. Will try to go this summer because summer's the big one since there's an eight-ish month gap between winter Comiket and summer Comiket, but only four-ish in the other direction, so people usually take a lot more time preparing for summer. I will try to update this then and if I do, I'll try to consciously take as many pictures as I can but don't count on it.

I still have a lot of pictures from Akihabara itself though, since I went walking there more than a few times it almost feels like a second neighborhood to me now, not quite a second home yet. Think my next entry'll be about that. Or I can join the Pokemon 'blogging' playthrough trend, I'm not sure. Or introduce some games and visual novels and stuff. Or teach Japanese. I'll toss around the ideas in my head later. Either way, hopefully with each new post I'll become more brief, more to the point, with less filler. Until then I shall rely on the  cheap form of entertainment known as random images.
