[spoiler=Chapter One: The Beginning]
The sun shone down brightly, its light giving way to the warm day that was now upon everyone. The autumn breeze lightly struck against the trees, their leaves pulling out from the stems and flying through the sky. As they were carried by the wind to their destination, they passed by a large school building, four stories tall and colored grey all over with red highlights everywhere. The campus stretched on, the three dorms surrounding the school emptying out of students. One however, stuck to the back, away from the crowd.

The girl was far from petite, tall enough to see over the heads of most of the other students, even the boys. Her red hair swayed in the wind, which just accentuated the blue streaks that were present in her hair. Her blue eyes lit up in delight as she chewed on her apple, the red fruit matching her school uniform.

She wasn't particularly excited to go to school, not with the way the school system was. Each student was ranked by their abilities in the card game Duel Monsters, Obelisk Blue being the elites, Ra Yellow being average, and Slifer Red being the absolute bottom. The blues pretty much ran the school, which annoyed her to no end. Why in a school where they were trying to learn how to play the game were they punished for needing to learn the game?!

She shook her head as she tossed her now-finished apple into the trash, heading to her homeroom class. It was a quiet walk as she moved through the halls, keeping to herself. Everyone was either a complete rich dork or a complete rich snob, which annoyed the hell out of her.

After a few minutes, she made it to her homeroom, where she sat in the back of the room, expecting today to be like any other boring day. However, she did notice something was off. The homeroom teacher was late… he was never late. The class was quiet was they waited. Why would the teacher be late?

They were quickly answered when the teacher walked in with a new student, who was dressed in honestly the strangest clothes she had seen in this private school. He wore a blue jacket and pants, flame designs embedded onto them, with a white shirt underneath. Tied around his right forearm was a red headband, which was fluttering in an invisible wind. He was of average height, the orange tips of his blue spiky hair probably only coming up to her neck. His brown eyes were sharp and focused, looking as hard as steel.

“Class, this is our new student, who has just transferred from Taiyo High School,” The teacher stated, causing the class to look at the boy in surprise. Taiyo was a public duel school, which were inferior to Academia in every way. How did he get enrolled into this school? “Why don’t you introduce yourself?” The boy just gave a cocky grin before stating,

“The name’s Ryuu Kyouji, and I couldn’t give less of a crap who the rest of you are. I’m going to beat each and every one of you small fries until I get the attention of the top snobs and beat out the info I want from them!” The class was stunned into silence. What a bold way to introduce oneself.

“If you’re trying to be a badass, shouldn’t you be saying this in front of the school or something?” A Ra Yellow called out from his seat. Kyouji looked over, growling.

“Dontcha know anything?! I have to beat you small fries so some snob will think I’m getting too big for my britches and try to squash me! Then I squash him, rinse and repeat until I beat the top student! Idiot…,” The teacher shook his head.

“Take your seat,” He stated in a bored tone as he patted Kyouji’s shoulder. “You can sit by… Hoshi Haruka-san over there,” He stated, pointing to the red-headed amazon. Kyouji simply shrugged and walked over, flopping into the seat, obviously bored.

“Well, you got guts,” Haruka commented as she leaned back in her chair. Kyouji looked over, raising an eyebrow.

“Got a problem with that?” He asked.

“No, no. I like it. It’s a lot better than over half these people,” She said, smiling. Kyouji chuckled at that.

“Well, that’s not the answer I was expecting, to be honest,” He admitted. The two were quickly silenced by the teacher clearing his throat. The school day had begun…

Kyouji sighed to himself as he walked through the halls. He had spent two mind numbing boring classes about card types and summoning mechanics, and uuuugh. He needed to duel someone, or else he would die of the boredom!

He then noticed two punks in yellow uniforms cornering a guy in red, and it seemed like they were trying to steal money. With a chuckle and cracking his knuckles, Kyouji strapped on his bright red duel disk and walk over. This was going to be fun…

Haruka walked down the halls herself, rubbing her neck. It kinda sucked being so tall, as it hurt her back and neck bending over the small desks so much. She shook her head. She figured she might as well look for Kyouji. He was new, and probably need directions to the lunchroom. Now how to find him…?

It wasn’t hard. She found him standing over the bodies of two boys, smoke coming off their limp forms. He looked over to her and grinned.

“Oh, hey Haruka,” Kyouji greeted. “Don’t worry about those two bastards. They’ll be fine. Eventually,” His duel disk’s blade flickered out of existence, and he slipped it back into his pocket.

“Already dueling, Kyouji-san? Guess you’re getting a head start,” She said with a laugh. “Now, c’mon, you want lunch, don’t you?” She asked as she began to walk down the hall. Kyouji rolled his shoulder and followed her, grinning a bit. Food did sound amazing! They walked in silence, soon ending up in the cafeteria. As they waited in line, Haruka decided it might be a good time to try to get to know the new student.

“So, what was your ranking at Taiyo?” She decided to ask. That would give her a good idea of where he stood, and probably what ranking he would be assigned when the time came.

“Huh? Oh, I was an Avatar Black in that place,” He said as he scratched his cheek. “I think that’s about equal to a Blue in this school,” He said with a shrug. Haruka nodded, thinking to herself. That probably made him at best a Ra Yellow in this school. At least he wasn’t a red like herself. The two grabbed their tray, the lunch ladies slapping a burger on their tray and moved them along without a word. Kyouji noticed there was better food, however, like pizza that smelled decent, and steaks with sides of sushi. Why were they given these instead of the option of those? Haruka didn’t question it, however, so he decided not to do that either. The two walked to a table, sitting down quietly.

Kyouji then realized that the two were alone at a table, eating lunch… was this weird? Maybe… Did it really matter? Not really. He began to fill his face with the burgers whose taste was about one step above cardboard, in his opinion. He looked around as he ate, noticing anyone in red was eating things similar to them, while yellow got pizza, and the blues were eating the steak. Was… their lunch determined by their school rankings? That was a load of crap, wasn't it?

He went back to eating, when suddenly a guy in a yellow uniform slammed his hands on the table. Startled, Kyouji looked up to the man in front of him. He was a young male, roughly about 17 years old, just like Kyouji, with shoulder length brown hair spiked at the ends and jutting downwards. His chocolate brown eyes were staring at Kyouji, full of fury.

Temee,” Kyouji muttered as he looked at the newcomer. “What the hell do you want?” The newcomer’s eyes blazed with fury as he began to explain.

“My name is Jira Kaosu, and you said you wanted to beat up on the ‘small fries’, didn’t you? Well, I’m here to show you that we aren’t small fries! Duel me, transfer student!” Kyouji blinked.

“Seriously man? We had all day, and you decide to spring this on now, while I’m eating? C’mon, you couldn’t do this at homeroom? If classes work like back home, we would have been excused from classes for the duel. Hell, that’s how I passed most of my classes, winning those duels,” Kaosu shook his head.

“What better place to show what you’re made of than in front of the school during lunch?” the challenger countered. Kyouji paused.

“Huh, you got a point. Alright, then let’s do it, temee!” Kyouji stood up, grabbing his disk as the Duel Disk blared to life, the blade igniting with light. “Hope you’re ready, because I’m going to go all out!” Haruka just shook her head with a sigh. Seems lunch would have to wait. Students began to gather around as the two duelists took their positions.

“Duel!!”
