[spoiler=Chapter 1 - The Semester Begins]

Morning came swiftly over the horizon of Igirisu City, awaking its denizens from their slumber. The remnants of the summer weather blew through the city in the form of a soft breeze which complimented the pleasant warm atmosphere. The sun stretched its rays over the city, its light hitting two different school buildings: the York Duel Institute and Duel Academy of Lancaster. For these two rivaling schools, their newest semester began today and it would be one to truly remember.

On the path towards the Duel Academy of Lancaster, a young girl with shoulder length blue hair almost dancing in the summer breeze as her violet eyes shifted as she stared at the beautiful D.A.L. banners, all covered in their signature red roses.

“Emi-chan!”

Emi paused in her stride, before turning back to see another young girl with short black hair and green eyes running after her. By the look of the uniform, it was obvious that she was in a hurry.

“Oh, Asa.” Emi smiled, before continuing to walk towards the building. “Don’t tell me you woke up later today.”

“Weeeeeeell...it wasn’t my fault.” Asa gave off a nervous chuckle. “I stood up all night watching the latest tournament finals in America! It was close match, but the Champion there, Daniel Colton and his Noble Knights won the whole thing.”

“Noble Knights? Not surprising that a deck like that would win.” Emi looked at Asa with a small smile. “Especially with his opponent running Hieratics.”

“Yeah. But hey! We should stop the chit-chatting!” Asa started moving a bit faster. “Today’s the day when we get to see all the new Squires joining in.”

Emi, nodding, started picking up the pace as well to catch up to her friend. It was true that the new semester of classes began and it was almost nostalgic for her to get to watch the new students make it into the academy. Even if she was in the same position just last semester, it still was a fun sight to see.

By the time that Emi and Asa got into the Duel Arena, they saw that an Action Duel just ended as the Action Field began to dissipate from the arena floor.

“That’s the Duel!” a voice on the speakers spoke. “The winner and newest accepted student into Duel Academy of Lancaster is Yuudai Kurogane!!”

“Awww, we missed the Duel?” Asa sighed, hanging her head in defeat.

Emi, on the other hand, looked down at the field and saw the young man in question: Yuudai Kurogane. His hair blonde hair was in a messy state, like as if he just rolled out of bed, but Emi had to admit that at least the indigo streaks which could be seen amongst the blonde made it look cooler. His black blazer with the red trims and even his jeans seemed pressed down just for today.

Then again, why wouldn’t they be? Emi thought. It wasn’t just ANY day, it was the first day of the new semester, so it was obvious most students had to make an impression.

For a moment, as Emi kept staring at Yuudai, his sapphire blue eyes met hers. It was a brief moment as he started immediately walking away, but it was long enough to tell her that this boy obviously meant business.

It wasn’t long before the next entrance Duel and then the next one after that occurred, a good handful of them passing their Duels while another half just ending up losing. Even after their loss, of course, the proctors of the entrance Duel gave their opponents tips and even encouraged to try out for the following semester.

After all the entrance Duels ceased, the accepted students were gathered on the field, being given a stand ovation for their performances during their Duels.

“Now new young Squires of Duel Academy of Lancaster, the proctors will be passing you your classroom directories and where your homeroom will be located. As well, you will be receiving your own Action Field cards to allow you to Duel even without the use of a Duel Arena.” the voice on the speakers said, as the proctors began to move and hand each student a specific paper with their homerooms and classes would be located.

Emi noticed one proctor as her own homeroom teacher, Shion Ryoga, handing Yuudai his paper. Could this mean that Yuudai was going to be part of her homeroom class? It was something she based off on who gave him the paper, it was still to be determined. Nevertheless, she wished she could’ve seen him Duel, since he was the only one out of the group of accepted students that she didn’t see Dueling.

“These were some pretty good Duels this go round, huh Emi-chan?” Asa asked with a smile. “Looks like the competition is going to be stiff for us trying to get to Knight rank, huh?”

“Yeah, you’re not lying.” Emi nodded.

The rest of the day was mainly just orientation at the assembly so at the end of it all, the students were allowed to leave and do what they wished. Emi got up from her seat, grabbing her bag before looking over at Yuudai who was at the assembly, before finally moving up to him.

“Hi. I’m Emi Hattori.” she introduced herself, holding out a hand towards Yuudai. “I’m a second year Squire.”

“Yuudai Kurogane...” Yuudai said, slinging his bag over his shoulder, shaking Emi’s hand.

“Nice to meet you, Yuudai-Kun!” Emi smiled. “If you have any questions around here, or just need someone to talk to, I’ll be happy to help. I know what it’s like being the new student on campus, so I’ll help you out the best I can.”

Yuudai nodded, smiling lightly. “Thanks.” With that, he slowly walked away from Emi, only leaving her with Asa.

“He seems nice.” Asa giggled. “Are we falling for the blue eyed stranger, Emi?”

“What?! No!!” Emi looked at Asa before walking away from her best friend. “It’s just, I did say I want to help new students try and adjust to Lancaster. He’s...well, he’s just the first one I went to.”

“Uh-huh...sure it is.” Asa giggled, seeing Emi shake her head. “Don’t come crying to me when your heart is being given to him.”

Emi rolled her eyes, rounding the corner to head down the street, when she immediately crashed into someone, causing her to fall down. She looked up and dread was in her eyes right now. It was a group of guys all dressed in either black blazers with a white trim or white blazers with black trims. All of them with white rose insignias on them.

York Duel Institute students! Emi thought in horror, only to see the one in the front with jet black hair and emerald green eyes, his white blazer being stained with a thing of coffee.

“You Lancasterian trash!!” he shouted, watching Asa moving and finally helping Emi up. “Why don’t you watch where the hell you're going?!”

“I-It was an accident.” Emi quickly said, before watching the young man with the stained blazer move and step up towards her. While the group of York Duel Institute students with the young man surrounded her and Asa.

“Tch, you Lancasterian Squire trash need to learn some respect!” he spoke. “When a Knight walks by...a Yorkist Knight, no less, you pay attention!!” He began to raise his fist.

Emi and Asa both saw this and were flinching and preparing for the worst, however…

“HEY!”

The sudden exclamation of this caused the young man with the raised fist to stop and lower his fist. Turning around, he saw a Lancastrian student with blonde and indigo hair.“Oh look, more trash.” he spoke.

As the young man moved slightly out of the way where Emi and Asa saw their rescuer, being none other than Yuudai.

“Pretty sure she said it was an accident.” Yuudai said sternly, watching the head Yorkist step forward, a few of the others moving to surround him. “No need to flip your lid.”

“Listen kid, you obviously don’t know who you're talking to.” he spoke, staring at Yuudai. “The name is Katsuro Nakada, Knight of the Y.D.I. So someone like you shouldn’t be talking to me in such a manner.”

“Fine.” Yuudai said, pulling out a Duel Disk as he strapped it on his wrist, a blade of black and red light blaring to life. “I’ll talk another way to you.”

Katsuro laughed, before pulling out his own Duel Disk, its blade of white and black light appearing as well. “You must have quite the set of balls to think to Duel against a Knight. But if this is how I’m going to show you Lancastrian Squire trash where you belong...then so be it.”

Emi and Asa remained nearby as a few Yorkists kept them there. All the while, Emi was really praying that Yuudai would win.

“Action Field on...Garden of the White Rose.” Katsuro said, activating his Action Field. “Since you challenged me, you’ll be facing the consequences.”

The area began to materialize quite a number of solid vision white rose platforms and even had it raining white rose petals. High above them, the sphere which held the Action Cards could be seen.

“Prepare yourself...” Katsuro said menacingly.

Yuudai only smirked. “I was thinking the same for you.”

“DUEL!!”

[spoiler=Chapter 2 - A New Hero Rises]

-Opening-

“DUEL!!”

The clear sphere that held the Action Cards shattered and it began to rain down Action Cards around the area. The game was on...and it was obvious who was taking the first turn.

“I’ll start off, Lancasterian trash.” Katsuro spoke confidently, looking at his hand. “Firstly, I summon my Super Quantum Green Layer, in attack mode!”

Once he placed the card on the Duel Disk, the green armored monster appeared to his master’s call, his arms crossed.

Super Quantum Green Layer

Lv. 4 | Wind

ATK: 1600 | DEF: 1400

“By his monster effect, I Special Summon another Super Quantum...now, appear, Super Quantum Blue Layer!” Katsuro shouted, as he summoned another monster to the field as if it was nothing.

The second monster, clad in blue armor, stood beside Green Layer as she struck a heroic pose before crouching and putting her arms up, in a defensive position.

Super Quantum Blue Layer

Lv. 3 | Water

ATK: 1200 | DEF: 2000

“And now, by Blue Layer, I add a “Super Quant” card to my hand.” Katsuro spoke, before chuckling. “The card I pick is Super Quantal Mech Ship Magnacarrier!” Once he declared his card, he watched the deck spit out said card. “Now I activate my Field Spell...behold the glory of Magnacarrier!”

Upon activation, a huge futuristic ship began to fly overhead, casting a huge shadow beneath Katsuro and everyone else in the general area.

“I’ll end my turn here.” Katsuro smirked smugly, taking his right hand and running it through his jet black hair. “Since I can’t attack, I suppose I’ll watch you squirm a bit.”

Turn 1:

.:Katsuro Nakada:.

LP: 8000

Hand: 3

Monsters: Super Quantum Green Layer [ATK | 1600], Super Quantum Blue Layer [DEF | 2000]

Spells/Trap: Super Quantal Mech Ship Magnacarrier [Field Spell]

Grave: 0

“He’s using a Quantum deck.” Emi mumbled, looking at both Katsuro and Yuudai. “And unfortunately...it seems Katsuro wants to end this quickly.”

Asa looked at Emi, before looking at Magnacarrier. “But...but he won’t be able to do too much right now. Right?”

“He has the Field Spell out, so there’s no telling.” Emi sighed, before glancing over at Yuudai. “Guess now we just have to figure out what he does.”

Yuudai exhaled slowly, before drawing a card from his deck. “Draw. And now...” he started, before leaping up onto one of the white rose platforms and began to run and jump around some.

“Least the trash knows how to work an Action Field.” Katsuro simply said, watching Yuudai grabbing an Action Card and putting it in his hand.

Okay. He’s running Quantum, a very Xyz heavy deck. Yuudai thought, surveying Katsuro’s field. Not only that, but he’s got his Magnacarrier out, which can spell trouble for me. And unfortunately, I don’t have a specific way to stop that with my current hand. Guess I’ll make do with what I got.

“Alright. I activate E-Emergency Call!” Yuudai spoke determinately, as a huge “E” was shown behind him. “So by its effect, I add Elemental HERO Woodsman to my hand.” Swiftly, Yuudai took the card from his deck and then immediately played another.

“Next! I summon Elemental HERO Stratos!” he smirked, watching the winds pick up around the area and a small gust of wind brought forth his monster, a warrior with artificial wings. “And by Stratos’ effect, I’m going to add Elemental HERO Blazeman to my hand.”

Elemental HERO Stratos

Lv. 4 | Wind

ATK: 1800 | DEF: 300

Elemental HERO? Emi thought, quite surprised at the dynamic of what deck the new guy was using. HERO against Quantum...that sounds like a one sided battle.

The next sound that cut the silence that was abound in this Duel was from Katsuro, who was breaking out into laughter. “Oh this is rich! E-HEROs? You run a Fusion dependent deck against one that is superior to it.” he said, wiping a tear from his eye. “It makes beating the hell out of you all the more fun.”

“Heh, you seem pretty confident.” Yuudai smirked, before grabbing another card. “But I’ve yet to begin. Stratos! Attack his Green Layer!”

Stratos began to ascend high into the air, before dive-bombing towards Green Layer. However, as Stratos closed in on Green Layer, it seemed to simply side step out of the way.

“What?”

“Action Magic, Evasion!” Katsuro laughed. “Too bad for you. But that was your only time to attack.”

Yuudai looked at Katsuro, grinning from ear to ear as Stratos returned to his side of the field. “You’d be right, rich kid. But only if I was running just pure E-HEROs...which I’m not!” After seeing a shocked look on Katsuro’s face, Yuudai tossed a card in the air and played it on the Duel Disk.

“I activate the Quick-Play Spell! Mask Change!!” he said, before snapping his fingers. “Stratos! Showtime!”

Stratos simply nodded and took to the skies, as he was met with mask descending from the heavens. Quickly removing his own, the mask from the heavens slammed down on his head and he was engulfed in a heavy gust of wind.

“Cast away your old face in favor for a new power! Let the winds aid you in your pursuit of justice!” Yuudai confidently spoke. “Transformation Summon! Masked HERO Divine Wind!!

As Yuudai said this, the heavy gust of wind died as a monster clad in green armor and wearing a white cape descended in his place.

Masked HERO Divine Wind

Lv. 8 | Wind

ATK: 2700 | DEF: 1900

“Masked HERO!?” Katsuro shouted, clenching his fist. “How could someone as trash as you even have those rare cards?!”

“Divine Wind! Attack Green Layer!” Yuudai said, watching Divine Wind move at a breakneck speed towards Green Layer and punching it straight in the gut as it fell over and shattered.

Katsuro’s Life Points: 8000 -> [900 Damage Taken] -> 7100

“Green Layer’s effect activates. I discard Super Quantal Fairy Alphan in order to draw a card.” Katsuro said through clenched teeth.

“And I draw one by Divine Wind’s ability.” Yuudai drew one extra card from his deck, before nodding. Something didn’t add up, however. He was sure that Divine Wind did more damage to Katsuro by destroying Green Layer. What was going on? “I end my turn.”

Turn 2:

.:Yuudai Kurogane:.

LP: 8000

Hand: 5 & 1 Action Card

Monsters: Masked HERO Divine Wind [ATK | 2700]

Spells/Trap: None

Grave: E-Emergency Call, Elemental HERO Stratos

Katsuro clenched his fist, staring with daggers at Yuudai. How was this possible? He wasn’t even aware that someone, let alone a Lancastrian Duelist would hold such rare cards as this. But right now, he had more pressing issues to deal with. Namely...winning this Duel.

“A lucky shot, nothing more.” Katsuro spoke, drawing his next card. “I summon Green Layer once more! And by his effect, I summon one more monster...this time, come forth, Super Quantum Red Layer!”

At once, the second Green Layer appeared and with him, a warrior clad in red armor and the very obvious lion motif appeared on the field.

Super Quantum Red Layer

Lv. 5 | Fire

ATK: 2000 | DEF: 800

“Red Layer activates. I add Green Layer to my hand from grave.” Katsuro took his card before looking at the field. “Now...let’s have some fun, Lancastrian trash! Magnacarrier, activate!!”

Now the Magnacarrier ship began to spring to life at this declaration, watching its front compartment opening up slowly.

“Oh no...he’s doing it.” Emi gasped.

“By discarding one card, I allow my Red Layer to be free.” Katsuro smiled, throwing away Super Quantal Finisher Alphan Ball. “Now, activate the Overlay Network via Magnacarrier!”

Red Layer began to turn into a red ball of light, the Overlay Network activating as he shot up towards Magnacarrier and it’s open compartment. A bright light shot out into the red light, creating a beautiful light show.

Leader of your pride, let the very ground you tread upon burst with flames as you approach victory! Xyz Summon!!” Katsuro shouted, as the light began to die down. “Roar! Super Quantal Mech Beast Magnaliger!

The light finally faded as with a very heavy drop, Magnaliger entered the fray of battle with a loud roar.

Super Quantal Mech Beast Magnaliger

Rk. 5 | Fire

ATK: 2600 | DEF: 2000

“Using just one monster for an Xyz?” Yuudai muttered, shaking his head with a smile. “So this is Quantum up close. This is pretty interesting.”

“Next, I activate Magnaliger’s ability. By removing Red Layer, I can destroy your monster.” Katsuro grinned.

Damn. I forgot that one of the monsters could do that. Yuudai thought, moving back some.

Katsuro removed Red Layer from Magnaliger and watched as his Xyz monster sent out a roaring shockwave towards Divine Wind, watching him shatter into pieces. “And, just so you know I’m not playing, I activate Magnaliger’s other ability.” he said, holding Green Layer in his hand. “I take a Super Quantum” monster and make it Xyz Material. Meaning…”

“He can still attack.” Yuudai mumbled as looked down at the Action Card still in his hand, he saw it wasn’t going to save Divine Wind, but it would save him.

“Magnaliger attacks you directly!!” Katsuro shouted, before moving around to his right.

“No he isn’t!” Yuudai replied. “Action Magic! Battle Lock! I’m sa-”

“Action Magic! No Action!” Katsuro laughed. “Your Action Card is null and void. Oh...and guess what? You just helped my monsters out. Everytime Action Cards are activated when Garden of the White Rose is the Action Field, York Duel Institute student’s monsters...MY monsters, gain 200 attack until the end of turn.”

Super Quantal Mech Beast Magnaliger

ATK: 2600 -> +400 -> 3000

Super Quantum Green Layer

ATK: 1600 -> +400 -> 2000

Yuudai froze, his eyes widening. “200...attack if an Action Card is activated?!”

Emi and Asa cringed at this. Yuudai was still new to the school and didn’t fully understand the specific Action Fields that York Duel Institute had. It was a dirty trick this Action Field gave to the opposition, but their own gave them the power to draw an extra card by discarding an Action Card.

“Now, Magnaliger! Attack him directly!” Katsuro shouted, watching Magnaliger rushing up towards Yuudai and literally batting him into a tree.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 8000 -> [3000 Damage Taken] -> 5000

“And now Green Layer!!”

Green Layer simply nodded and then blasted out a sphere of air towards Yuudai, knocking him back down after he just got himself up.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 5000 -> [2000 Damage Taken] -> 3000

Katsuro watched with a huge smile, only laughing. “Have you had enough, Lancastrian?” he smugly said. “I’ll end my turn. Now hurry up and get up so I can knock you back down again.”

Turn 3:

.:Katsuro Nakada:.

LP: 7100

Hand: 1

Monsters: Super Quantal Mech Beast Magnaliger [ATK | 2600 | 1 Material], Super Quantum Green Layer [ATK | 1600], Super Quantum Blue Layer [DEF | 2000]

Spells/Trap: Super Quantal Mech Ship Magnacarrier [Field Spell]

Grave: Super Quantum Red Layer, Super Quantum Fairy Alphan, Super Quantal Finisher Alphan Ball, Action Magic - No Action

“Emi...we need to help him.” Asa said, looking at Emi. “This newbie isn’t ready to go head to head with a Knight.”

Emi nodded in agreement. “Y-You're right, but the moment we barge in, we’ll already be taking a penalty for interrupting a Duel. It would just give him even more of an advantage.”

“H-Heh...heh, I ain’t done yet.”

Emi and Asa turned to glance over at Yuudai who slowly stood up, smiling widely.

“I ain’t done yet.” Yuudai said once more. “In fact, I’m only getting started! Draw!” he looked at his hand and nodded.

-BGM-

“I summon Elemental HERO Blazeman!” Yuudai said, watching his monster appear beside him in a flame of glory. “Thanks to him, I add Polymerization to my hand as well.” He quickly removed the card from his deck and added it to his hand.

Elemental HERO Blazeman

Lv. 4 | Fire

ATK: 1200 | DEF: 1800

Hmph, what else does he hope to accomplish? Katsuro thought, watching Yuudai conduct his turn. He isn’t giving up, however. Most Lancasterian academy students turn tail and surrender at this point. I can’t tell if he’s stupid or if he’s actually thinking he can win.

“Next! Polymerization will activate! I fuse Elemental HERO Woodsman with Elemental HERO Ocean!” he said, removing the three cards from hand, watching as on the field Woodsman and Ocean appeared briefly before vanishing in a swirling vortex.

Your justice is a fierce blizzard, entrapping evil-doers in its wake!” Yuudai said, smiling. “Fusion Summon! The iceman cometh! Elemental HERO Absolute Zero!

Elemental HERO Absolute Zero

Lv. 8 | Water

ATK: 2500 | DEF: 2000

“But he isn’t staying for long!” Yuudai said, lifting up another card. “Mask Change activate!”

Katsuro watched with wide eyes, seeing Absolute Zero being summoned and then watching as it started raising itself on an ice platform, much in the similar manner that Stratos did when changing into Divine Wind.

Cast away your old face in favor for a new power! Take aim and control the outcome of the battle!” Yuudai smiled once more. “Transformation Summon! Masked HERO Acid!

Just like Stratos before him, Absolute Zero removed his own mask and let a new one slam onto his head, initiating a new transformation into a new warrior, this one complete with a blaster in hand.

Masked HERO Acid

Lv. 8 | Water

ATK: 2600 | DEF: 2100

“So what? What was the point of all that?” Katsuro laughed.

“Simple...a double effect.” Yuudai said, as a silhouette of Absolute Zero appeared behind Acid. “Absolute Zero’s effect pops. When it leaves the field, your monsters are destroyed.”

“WHAT?!” Katsuro exclaimed, clenching his teeth as he watched a few ice spikes emerge from the ground as his monsters were all destroyed. I forgot about Absolute Zero. How could I have forgotten such a simple monster clearing effect?! he thought.

Yuudai looked at Acid, who simply nodded. “Next, Acid. When he’s Special Summoned, your Spells and Traps are destroyed too.”

Acid already loaded his blaster and immediately shot at Magnacarrier, which exploded into an inferno. Everyone watching this Duel was astonished. In a quick move, Yuudai cleared out Katsuro’s field with ease.

“And now, the onslaught!” Yuudai smirked. “Blazeman, attack first!”

Blazeman nodded and flew in towards Katsuro, who didn’t move due to the sheer shock of this move.

Katsuro’s Life Points: 7100 -> [1200 Damage Taken] -> 5900

Katsuro was knocked back, finally getting some sense knocked into him which caused him to finally search for an Action Card. I’m not losing...I’M NOT LOSING!!

He reached out for one Action Card, but was shocked at it. It was one that would be activated if a card or effect would deal damage, in short it dealing with effect damage...Acceleration.

“Masked HERO Acid! Attack him next!”

Katsuro looked up, only seeing Acid shooting his blaster about six times, causing him to be knocked back once more.

Katsuro’s Life Points: 5900 -> [2600 Damage Taken] -> 3300

“T-That’s it...” Katsuro groaned, slowly standing up. “Your out of attacks. No Mask Change this time to save you!”

Yuudai looked at his hand, then at Katsuro. “No. A Mask Change would help. But at the same time, Form Change will do just fine!” he smiled, activating another card. “Form Change, I basically switch out my Masked HERO here and bring out another one of the same Level!”

“I-Impossible!!”

“Now, a new Level 8 HERO will appear!” Yuudai said, before snapping his fingers, watching Acid envelop in a bright light. “Cast away your old face in favor of a new power! Let your light of justice shine the way for future generations! Transformation Summon! Masked HERO Koga! It’s showtime!”

The light dimmed and now a warrior in white and gold appeared, posing with its twin arm blades.

Masked HERO Koga

Lv. 8 | Light

ATK: 2500 | DEF: 1800

Yuudai stopped, before looking towards Koga’s right and saw an Action Card. Sprinting towards it, he rolled and grabbed it. “Yes! Perfect! Action Magic! Extreme Sword!” he shouted, before pointing at Koga. “With it, I choose Koga to gain 1000 attack points.”

Masked HERO Koga

ATK: 2500 -> +1000 -> 3500

“That’s...” Asa said, beginning to smile. “That’s enough to beat him!”

Emi looked at Yuudai, just dumbfounded at this. “Amazing.” she said, just shaking her head. Who in the world is this guy?

“Koga! Help me out buddy and finish this Duel!” Yuudai smiled, punching the air in front of him. “Attack him with Solaris Punishment!!”

Koga nodded, moving at a breakneck speed towards Katsuro, slashing at him quite a few times with his arm blades before returning to Yuudai’s side.

Katsuro’s Life Points: 3100 -> [3500 Damage Taken] -> 0

DUEL OVER!

Yuudai Kurogane Wins!

The Duel Disks declared the winner as the field deactivated. Yuudai had won against Katsuro.

“K-Katsuro!” “Nakada-san!”

The group that was with Katsuro immediately surrounded him, trying to help him up. They began to talk to themselves, about ready to jump this kid, but suddenly Katsuro stopped them.

“You!” Katsuro shouted, pointing at Yuudai, who was making his way towards Asa and Emi. “What is your name, trash?”

“Yuudai Kurogane.” he said, giving only a nod. “I trust you won’t forget it?”

Katsuro shook his head. “I won’t. Just watch your back, Kurogane. This was only just a stroke of luck.” he said, turning around and ran his hands through his hair. “The next time we meet, I WILL win.”

Yuudai watched as the York Duel Institute students left, before turning his attention towards Emi and Asa. “You both alright?”

Emi and Asa only nodded, still dumbfounded about what they had just witnessed. Finally Emi shook it off before speaking. “We had everything under control. Worst came to worst, I would’ve Dueled him myself.”

With a laugh, Yuudai nodded. “Well, I saw an opportunity to help out and I thought I’d take it. Really hope you didn’t mind, Emi-senpai.”

Emi rolled her eyes a bit as Asa just began to giggle. “Oh believe me, Yuudai-san, we don’t mind the help at all!” Asa smiled.

Yuudai nodded, turning as he slung his bag over his shoulder. “See you both tomorrow then!”

Asa was just waving like a maniac at this point, but Emi stood there, legitimately impressed at Yuudai’s Dueling skills.

It was obvious now that he had skill, but to go toe-to-toe with a Knight rank Duelist, and actually win? That was something she wasn’t expecting. It was obvious now, that this semester, things were going to get interesting.

[spoiler=Chapter 3 - Enter the Junk Man Pt. 1]

-Opening-

“You dead serious?”

“Hell yeah I am! Word is that a Squire rank Duelist took on a Yorkist Knight rank Duelist and won!”

After the events that occurred the day before, the Duel Academy of Lancaster were all abuzz with this surprising news. It was something that was almost unheard of! A low ranked Duelist defeating a higher ranked Duelist...and one from a rival school as well! It was obvious that this was the news that was catching the D.A.L. by storm.

All the while, Yuudai in his homeroom class, reading a manga entitled: “Boku no Hero Academia”. It was just something to read over until class started. At the moment, no one knew that he was the one who acted all heroic against Katsuro. Well, all except for…

“Morning Yuudai-kun.”

Yuudai was pulled from his manga, hearing his name called, seeing Emi sitting in the desk beside him. “Oh, hey Emi-senpai.” he said, putting a bookmark in the book and putting it down. “How are you doing? I mean, after yesterday?”

“Jeez, I told you yesterday, I’m fine.” Emi rolled her eyes. “Still, I’m surprised you didn’t immediately say it was you who beat Katsuro. I mean, EVERYONE is talking about it.”

Yuudai gave off a slight chuckle before shaking his head. “Eh, it just ain’t me to make a huge deal about stuff like that.” he said, putting his hands behind his head. “Besides, a hero does things not to get glory, praise, or even rewards. They do it cause it's the right thing to do!”

“Well alright, mister hero...” Emi shook her head, letting out a small giggle.

As soon as Emi said this, Shion Ryoga walked into the classroom and smiled at the students gathered. He placed the books he had in his hands down on his desk before moving to take his long auburn hair and immediately pulling it up into a ponytail. Once his hair was in the ponytail, he cleared his throat.

“Greetings. Welcome to the official day one of classes for Duel Academy of Lancaster.” he said, taking a small bow. “I am your homeroom teacher, Shion Ryoga. And let’s start things off with roll.” With that said, he took a clipboard and began to rattle off a few names.

“Hattori, Emi?”

Emi smiled and spoke up. “Present and accounted for, sensei!” she said, seeing Shion nod and count her as present.

Shion continued to rattle off a few more names, before stopping. “Kurogane, Yuudai?”

“Present, sir.”

Shion looked over at Yuudai, before smiling. “Glad to see you in my class, Kurogane. I’m hoping for big things with you.”

“Thank you sir.” Yuudai nodded, watching Shion returning to taking roll.

It wasn’t long until Shion finally came to the last name in the class, before looking around. “Yahiro, Tatsuo?” he called, only to not get a response from anyone. “Yahiro, Tatsuo?”

Once more, no answer from anyone in the class.

Shion sighed, preparing to call out the name once more. However, the door to the classroom suddenly opened and in ran a young man, obviously out of breath. He huffed greatly, finally throwing his head back to show off his hazel eyes and orange spiked hair.

“I-I...I made it...I’m here!”

Shion blinked at the student, before clearing his throat. “Yahiro, Tatsuo I assume?”

Tatsuo slowly stood up, nodding with a huge smile. “Yes sir, Ryoga-sensei. Sorry about being late. Was helping an old lady across the street...well more like she demanded my help.”

“I see, I see.” Shion chuckled, marking Tatsuo present as well. “Well either way, take your seat.”

Tatsuro nodded quickly, still obviously out of breath as he passed Yuudai and Emi, sitting in one of the desks in the back of the classroom.

“Alright. Today, we’ll be starting with something a bit easy for some.” Shion said, moving to the board behind him and beginning to write a few things down. Eventually, the students in the classroom would see that Shion wrote down two words: Squire and Knight. “Aside from those of you who have been here last year.” he said, looking at Emi and a few other students. “Who can tell me what these signify?”

The room was quiet for a good period of time, before one student raised their hand. “Um...squire and knights, aren’t those from the European culture?”

“A good start, a good start indeed.” Shion said, nodding before noticing Yuudai raising his hand next. “Kurogane!”

Yuudai lowered his hand. “Knights were a lower class of nobility in the Middle Ages. They were also warriors who lived by their code of chivalry.” he said, before pausing for a moment to gather his thoughts. “And squires were a usually the shield and armor bearers of a knight. They were the knight’s errand boys.”

Shion smiled, nodding once more. “Excellent. Kurogane here is correct. However, we are one of two schools who use Squires and Knights in a different way.” he said, before returning to the board. “Squires here are what we call a lower tier Duelists. When you first get accepted into D.A.L., you are automatically a Squire. Knights, are the higher tier Duelists.”

“Wait...then how do you rank up then?” a student asked, causing Shion to snicker.

“Rank-Up, an Xyz pun. I do approve of it.” Shion said, before pointing at Emi. “Hattori, perhaps you can shed some light onto your classmates?”

Emi nodded, before clearing her throat. “To achieve the rank of Knight, you actually have no control over. Knights choose Knights, sort of how an actor or singer is scouted during a performance. Though to be officially on the Knight’s list, you’ll have to at least win ten Duels.”

“And there’s no guarantee that you’ll be picked right away.” Shion nodded. “The road to Knighthood will end up reaching a climax for those individuals when they end up Dueling and beating a Knight.”

After this was explained, the students started chattering amongst themselves before one finally spoke up. “Then that means the person who beat that Yorkist Knight yesterday might already be one they would want?”

The room got quiet, before Shion sighed. “Perhaps. However, we won’t know due to said Duelist not coming forth and accepting the glory for it. Nevertheless, that’s probably their business and not ours.”

Yuudai sat there in silence, as his classmates continued to talk and ask questions. His mind lulled over the fact of him being the guy who beat Katsuro yesterday. Because of that one action, he could possibly be promoted to a Knight within no time flat. However, did he really want that?

-X-

After the specifics of the student ranks were detailed out for the students, Shion dismissed his class and the first one out the door was Tatsuo. After him, the other students filed out, with Emi and Yuudai bringing up the rear.

“You alright, Yuudai-kun?” Emi said, noticing Yuudai seeming to be engrossed in his own thoughts.

Yuudai nodded a bit, rubbing the back of his head some. “Just thinking of what Ryoma-sensei mentioned. Mainly about the Knights possibly recruiting the person who beat Katsuro.” he explained, seeing Emi nod. “Yeah. To be honest, I’m not sure it's something I really want.”

“I get it.” Emi nodded. “You don’t want to be handed a promotion without proving yourself. It’s just a normal pride thing is all. A lot of males have that going for them.”

“Jeez, it's not just a pride thing you know.” Yuudai rolled his eyes. “If anything I don’t see any fun in just being handed something like that on a silver platter.”

“Whatever. Pride or chivalry, either way.” Emi shrugged. “Regardless things will get found out eventually.”

“As long as no one says anything or finds out it won’t.” Yuudai stated, rounding the corner of the hallway, before stopping suddenly.

“Yuudai? What’s wrong?” Emi asked, moving to the side of Yuudai, not feeling like bumping into him.

In the direction of both students, they saw Tatsuo up against a wall and three students harassing him. The three students wore matching red blazers with black trims on them.

“Knights.” Emi sighed, crossing her arms. “Unfortunately, these are the newer Knights who end up bullying the others. Fantastic.” She prepared to turn around to walk away, but noticed Yuudai wasn’t budging at all. She also took note that his right hand was balled into a fist at this point.

“You're pulling my leg, kid!” one of the three Knights laughed, before yanking something out from Tatsuo’s hands. “You run Junks? JUNKS?!” The three Knights just began to laugh hysterically, as they flipped through all the cards in Tatsuo’s deck.

Tatsuo began to stammer towards the three. “H-Hey! G-Give me my deck back!” He tried to move away from the wall, but he was pushed back up against it by one of the Knights.

“Deck? This isn’t a deck, kid!” the Knight holding Tatsuo’s deck chuckled. “This is stacked up garbage. I can’t believe they let you in with a deck like this.” He motioned the others to back away with his hand, before smiling smugly. “But if you want the deck, I’ll give it to you.”

Tatsuo watched the Knight proceed to hand his deck back to him, and with outstretched hands he prepared to grab it. However, the Knight tipped his hand and let the deck slip out of his hand and the cards scattered all over the hallway floor.

“Oops~ I must have butterfingers today or something.” the Knight laughed, before he and his friends walked away from Tatsuo, leaving him to pick his cards up.

Tatsuo rubbed his nose a bit, sighing before kneeling down and proceeding to pick his cards up. Stupid Knights. he thought, rubbing his eye a bit as he picked up a few cards. Tatsuo reached for another card, but caught the sight of another hand reaching for his cards. Upon looking up, he saw Yuudai crouched down and helping him out.

“You looked like you could use an extra hand.” Yuudai said with a small nod.

Tatsuo just blinked at Yuudai, before shaking his head. “Your from Ryoma’s class, aren’t you? S-Same as me?” he asked, seeing Yuudai nod. “You here to make fun of my deck too?”

“First off, I’m not like those jerks.” Yuudai said, picking up another card, looking directly at Drill Warrior. “Second, I actually kind of like seeing classics like this. Nowadays you only get to see all this new age archetypes.”

Tatsuo was surprised to hear something like this, especially phrased like that. Nevertheless, he picked up the last of his cards and watched as Yuudai handed him the cards he picked up as well. “Well...thanks I guess.” he said nervously.

Yuudai only nodded and extended a hand out towards Tatsuo. “Yuudai Kurogane. You said your name was Tatsuo in class, right?”

“Y-Yeah. Tatsuo Yahiro.” Tatsuo nodded, his hand meeting Yuudai’s as they shook.

Yuudai stood up, adjusting his bag on his shoulder before helping Tatsuo up. “So, what the heck was their deal with you anyway, Tatsuo?”

“Oh. Well, it's mainly because of my choice of deck.” Tatsuo sighed, putting his deck in its deck box. “Not sure if you noticed yet, Yuudai, but since this is one of the two prestigious Dueling schools, most of the student body has some pretty high class and high tier decks. Only reason they have their decks is usually cause their parents bought them only the best cards.”

Somewhat understanding, Yuudai nodded and shoved his hand into his pocket. “And your deck isn’t?” he asked, seeing the response of Tatsuo only being a nod.

“It isn’t. I literally scavenged and built this deck from nothing.” Tatsuo began to rub the back of his neck in a sheepish manner. “There were even times I literally went dumpster diving to get some of these cards.”

Now Tatsuo kind of felt stupid for telling this guy about this Junk deck of his, as it was literally filled with junk cards that he found, traded, and bought in order to get a workable deck. This guy is literally gonna start making fun of me too, I just know it. he thought with a sigh.

“Wow.” Yuudai started, while Tatsuo braced himself for the worst. “You must really have been committed to completing that deck if you went to such lengths!”

Tatsuo was stunned at hearing such praise from Yuudai about his deck. “Y-You really think so?”

“I know it without a shadow of doubt!” Yuudai smiled. “I got an idea. Why don’t you and me have a Duel later on today? I’m actually really eager to see how well your Junk deck works. What do you say?”

It was obvious that Tatsuo was floored by this sudden challenge, as well as the praise of dedication to his deck. After a few moments, however, Tatsuo nodded with a nervous smile. “S-Sure. How about after lunch?” he asked, seeing Yuudai nod firmly.

“It’s a Duel then.” Yuudai said, holding a fist in front of Tatsuo, motioning with his head for him to bump fists with him. Tatsuo reluctantly did, and after he did, Yuudai began to walk off. “Don’t forget!”

Just to keep this up and alive, I'll be posting Chapter 4 in small updates. Currently college is being a pain, so here is a portion of Chapter 4. I'll edit it with more as I write.

[spoiler=Chapter 4 - Enter the Junk Man Pt. 2]

-Opening-

“Man...ever since yesterday, Katsuro hasn’t been himself.”

“Tch, you're telling me. And what’s more, Headmaster Richard heard about this and ended up requesting him in his office.”

The York Duel Institute was in an uproar as well, however, for different reasons. News had traveled fast regarding a Knight...a Yorkist Knight losing to a Lancastrian Squire rank Duelist. Something like that never happened before, Knights defeating Knights and Squires defeating Squires, yes...but never a shift in the dynamic.

And for Katsuro, who walked himself into the office of the Duel Institute’s Headmaster, he was furious on how the events played themselves out.

“Katsuro Nakada, thank you for meeting with me.” the man behind the desk in the office said, hands clasped in front of him as he stared at the young Duelist behind his glaring glasses. “Quite the upsetting news that has reached my office, Nakada.”

“It was a fluke!” Katsuro quickly snapped, only to see the headmaster hold up a hand. “I-I’m sorry Headmaster Richard.”

“I understand your rage...however, it’s currently geared towards the wrong individual.” Richard spoke, slowly standing up from his chair and turning to face his window. “More practice will be needed if your to remind this whelp his place, correct?”

Katsuro was silent, before sighing. “How am I to beat this Lancasterian trash if he uses something that isn’t played by anyone else?”

Richard only continued to stare out the window, before chuckling. “Yes, the Masked HERO archetype is something that is quite scarce...it’s surprising to find it in such a place as the Duel Academy of Lancaster. Hmph...Henry is no doubt relishing in his luck.”

Katsuro watched as Richard slowly turned around, seeing a small smirk on his face. “As for you, Nakada, let your emotions flow through your Duels. This defeat means nothing to you. Become as a phoenix rising from its own ashes...take this loss and use it to better yourself.”

Katsuro nodded slightly, bowing. “Understood Headmaster Richard.” he said, before leaving as he was dismissed.

Richard slowly turned back towards the window, his expression slowly dropping into a sour one. “So...Hayashi’s monsters return...” he muttered, his hands slowly being put behind him. “However, it seems that this deck from what the students said, isn’t on the same level. The deck...is incomplete.”

-X-

The lunch hour came for the students of the Duel Academy of Lancaster and it found Tatsuo sitting under a tree in the courtyard, just finishing his meal. With a full stomach, he now had to focus on the challenge he was given: Dueling Yuudai Kurogane.

It still floored him that someone like him would even consider him or his deck. If it was anyone else, they would’ve immediately ripped on him for his Junk deck. Nevertheless, he counted his lucky stars to be able to show off his deck.

“Sorry, hope you weren’t waiting long.”

Tatsuo quickly looked up and saw that Yuudai approached him with a smile. He got up and dusted himself off, only to smirk at his opponent. “Not at all, Kurogane. Just finishing up and was preparing to find you.”

Yuudai nodded, taking his Duel Disk out and activating it before putting his deck into it. “Well, how do you want to do this? Use the Action Field or just a normal Duel?” he asked, watching Tatsuo preparing his own Duel Disk.

“If it’s my choice” Tatsuo started, placing his deck into the slot. “I’d go for a normal one. Especially after I just ate.”

“Fair, fair.” Yuudai nodded. “In that case, I’ll let you go first, Tatsuo.”

Tatsuo nodded at this choice, as both Duelists started drawing their five cards.

“DUEL!”

Looking down at his cards, Tatsuo smirked and grabbed one. “First off, I activate Supply Squad!” he said, watching the hologram of the Spell Card appearing. “With this, if a monster I control is destroyed, via card effect or battle, I get to draw!”

“A card to immediately give you draw support from your monsters?” Yuudai asked, nodding slowly. “That’s not a bad opening move to start with.”

“If you think that’s good, you ain’t seen anything yet!” Tatsuo chuckled. “Next! I discard Level Eater and Special Summon from my deck, Quickdraw Synchron!”

After Tatsuo discarded the card, upon the field came a small mechanical creature in what seemed to be a cowboy hat with a feather in it, and wearing a red cape/bandana.

Quickdraw Synchron

Lv. 5 | WIND

ATK: 700 | DEF: 1400

“Now, by the effect of Level Eater in the grave, I drop Quickdraw’s level from five to four!” Tatsuo said, watching his monster’s level drop. “This allows me to bring out Level Eater from the grave in Defense Mode.”

Quickdraw Synchron

Lv. 5 -> Lv. 4

Suddenly from the ground, a small bug with the pattern on its back looking like that of a monster’s level star appeared right beside Quickdraw.

Level Eater

Lv. 1 | DARK

ATK: 600 | DEF: 0

“Wow...already two monsters on the field. Not bad!” Yuudai said, impressed at the moment.

“And we’re not done yet!” Tatsuo smirked, grabbing another card from his hand. “I now summon Quillbolt Hedgehog from my hand!” He watched as a small orange hedgehog with bolts on its back was immediately summoned, landing in front of Quickdraw.

Quillbolt Hedgehog

Lv. 2 | EARTH

ATK: 800 | DEF: 800

“Lastly…” Tatsuo sighed slowly, before pointing towards the sky. “With my Quickdraw Synchron, I tune together it and my Quillbolt Hedgehog!”

This was it...this was the moment! Quickdraw Synchron took to the sky first, then Quillbolt Hedgehog followed right after it. Once the two were in the air, Quickdraw Synchron began to fade and from him emerged four green gate like circles. Quillbolt Hedgehog went straight into them without any problem before a bright green light appeared from it.

“Gather the resolve of all and meld them into one invincible shield! Prove your worth by stopping all attacks! Synchro Summon! Stand proud, Junk Gardna!”

At this, quickly the light dissipated and a green and gold mechanical warrior landed loudly on the ground before Tatsuo, with its arms up in front of it, it’s two green shields in front of him.

Junk Gardna

Lv. 6 | EARTH

ATK: 1400 | DEF: 2600

Yuudai watched this transpire, only a small smirk appearing on his face as he looked right at Junk Gardna that Tatsuo summoned. A level six Synchro monster with 2600 defense...that’s not bad. he thought, seeing Tatsuo sighing once more.

“I’ll end my turn there.” Tatsuo said, with a chuckle. “Quite the first turn, huh?”

Turn 1:

.:Tatsuo Yahiro:.

LP: 8000

Hand: 2

Monsters: Level Eater [DEF | 0], Junk Gardna [DEF | 2600]

Spells/Traps: Supply Squad

Grave: Quickdraw Synchron, Quillbolt Hedgehog

Yuudai drew his sixth card and currently looked down at his hand. Currently there wasn’t anything he could specifically use at this moment. At least, nothing he could do right away to take care of the 2600 Defense power of Junk Gardna.

“I’ll be honest, that’s a pretty impressive first turn.” Yuudai smirked, shrugging. “Unfortunately, I don’t have a first turn to combat it...perhaps next turn.” He held a card up and placed it on the Duel Disk. “I’m setting a monster in Defense mode and set one card face down.”

Suddenly on the field, there was a face down card hologram in the Spell and Trap area and a face down monster, only the general defensive hologram appearing above the face down card.

“I’ll end turn there.” Yuudai simply said, before passing turn. “Turn three Tatsuo...what do you got?”

Turn 2:

.:Yuudai Kurogane:.

LP: 8000

Hand: 4

Monsters: Set Monster [DEF: ??]

Spells/Traps: Set Spell/Trap

Grave: 0

“Pretty lackluster there, Kurogane.” Tatsuo said, drawing his next card before smirking. “Regardless, I’ll show you what we got! I activate Junk Gardna’s effect!”

Junk Gardna reacted to his Duelist’s command, moving slightly as it’s red eyes flashed quickly.

“Now I’ll be targeting your face down monster.” Tatsuo declared. “By my Gardna’s ability, it’ll be switched to Attack Mode!”

Yuudai gave off a grim face as he watched his face down monster swiftly flip up, revealing to Tatsuo that it was Elemental HERO Woodsman.

Elemental HERO Woodsman

Lv. 4 | EARTH

ATK: 1000 | DEF: 2000

“Elemental HERO?” Tatsuo asked, nodding his head slightly. “So Fusion versus Synchro. Interesting. Still...I don’t know if it’ll help you much.” He grabbed a card from his hand and played it on his Duel Disk. “I summon from my hand, Synchron Explorer in Attack Mode!” Beside Junk Gardna, a hologram of a strange red round robot appeared.

Synchron Explorer

Lv. 2 | EARTH

ATK: 0 | DEF: 700

“Zero attack? I assume you aren’t letting that just stick around, are you?” Yuudai asked, seeing Tatsuo wave a finger.

“Can’t spoil anything yet.” Tatsuo said, before pointing at Synchron Explorer. “My Explorer’s effect activates! When its Normal Summoned, I can Special Summon a Synchron monster from the grave, at the cost of its effects being negated.” he smirked, having a card shoot from his grave slot and into his hand. “I’m bringing back Quickdraw Synchron!”

At the declaration of this, a bright light could be seen from the hole in Synchron Explorer. Suddenly a small beam of light shot out, which then manifested itself into the familiar appearance of Tatsuo’s Quickdraw Synchron.

“Next, I Synchro Summon Quickdrawn Synchron and my Explorer!” Tatsuo said, watching Quickdraw Synchron take to the air and fade into the five green gates, to which Synchron Explorer flew directly into them, a green light emerging soon after.

"Gather the resolve of all and become an arrow that penetrates the darkness! Take aim and fire true! Synchro Summon! Prove yourself, Junk Archer!"

From the green light descended a monster with orange armor plating and wielding a giant bow, who stood beside Tatsuo’s Junk Gardna.

Junk Archer

Lv. 7 | EARTH

ATK: 2300 | DEF: 2000

“Wow...” Yuudai managed to say, just in amazement of the quick summoning and flow of Tatsuo’s Junk deck.

“Now, I’ll have Junk Archer attack your Elemental HERO Woodsman!” Tatsuo said, watching his Archer drawback it’s bow and prepared to fire the arrow towards the wooden hero. “FIRE!!”

The Junk Archer let it’s hand go, letting the arrow it loaded onto the bow fly as it collided straight into Woodsman, piercing it straight through the chest. As it did, the monster exploded into pieces.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 8000 -> [1300 Damage Taken] -> 6700

“Heh, and that hero is history!” Tatsuo smirked, ending his Battle Phase. “And with that I-”

Yuudai held up a hand, causing the other Duelist to pause. “Before you end, I activate my Trap! Oasis of Dragon Souls!” he stated, watching his face down, spring upwards. “It allows me to Special Summon a monster from my grave in Defense Mode. However, it becomes a Wyrm-Type monster.” He watched as before him, the ground seemed to ripple like water would, as Woodsman reemerged onto the field in a crouched position.

“Huh...that’s actually a neat trick.” Tatsuo nodded, before shrugging. “Eh, whatever. I end my turn.”

Turn 3:

.:Tatsuo Yahiro:.

LP: 8000

Hand: 2

Monsters: Level Eater [DEF | 0], Junk Gardna [DEF | 2600], Junk Archer [ATK | 2300]

Spells/Traps: Supply Squad

Grave: Quickdraw Synchron, Quillbolt Hedgehog, Synchron Explorer

Yuudai quickly drew for his turn, a little happy at now he was able to do something. “My turn. And during my Standby Phase, I activate Woodsman’s ability. I can add a Polymerization to my hand from the deck or graveyard.” he said, watching a card start sticking out of his deck as he took it, immediately seeing his deck shuffled by the Duel Disk.

“Ahhh. I guessed I’d see you pullin’ out Poly sooner or later.” Tatsuo nodded, crossing his arms slightly.

After adding the Polymerization to his hand, Yuudai looked at his hand for the options he had. “Alright! I activate Polymerization to fuse the Woodsman on my field and the Elemental HERO Flash in my hand!” he said, watching Woodsman move and Flash appearing in...well a flash beside him before they leaped into the air and began to fuse to one another.

“Warrior hero of the earth, emerge from the ground and strike with the strength of a rockslide! Fusion Summon! Force of the earth, Elemental HERO Gaia!”

A bright light shone overhead and instantly a strange black armored warrior slammed onto the field, as it slammed its fists together, just staring Tatsuo and his Junk monsters down.

Elemental HERO Gaia

Lv. 6 | EARTH

ATK: 2200 | DEF: 2600

“Next, I’ll activate Gaia’s ability.” Yuudai smirked, seeing Gaia slowly move its hands in front of it. “I target a monster you control and until End Phase, he’ll be taking half of the monster’s attack! And I’m targeting Junk Archer!”

Gaia kept its hands in front of it, pointing them towards Junk Archer as his arms seemed to be drawing energy from the monster into the holes in them, almost attempting to feed off the archer.

Elemental HERO Gaia

ATK: 2200 -> [1150 from Junk Archer] -> 3350

Junk Archer

ATK: 2300 -> [1150 Taken] -> 1150

Tatsuo watched as his monster’s attack dropped drastically, glancing up at Gaia, who seemed to be pumped up now.

Yuudai smirked and pointed at the Junk Archer. “Battle! Elemental HERO Gaia will attack Junk Archer!!”

Gaia simply moved forward, running towards the Junk Archer and was about to give it a nice heavy right swing, but something was wrong. The warrior suddenly stopped and began to crouch in a kneeling position.

“Nice try, but I activate Junk Gardna’s effect.” Tatsuo smiled. “It’ll keep Gaia in Defense Mode until next turn.”

Yuudai sighed, shaking his head slightly. “Alright. I play one card face down and end my turn. Gaia’s and Archer’s attacks return to normal.”

Turn 4:

.:Yuudai Kurogane:.

LP: 6700

Hand: 4

Monsters: Elemental HERO Gaia [DEF | 2600]

Spells/Traps: Set Spell/Trap

Grave: Elemental HERO Woodsman, Elemental HERO Flash, Polymerization, Oasis of Dragon Souls

Tatsuo drew his card for turn, only to grin at what he saw. "I activate the effect of Junk Gardna!" He called out. "Now that Gaia has reverted to normal, I'll change him to ATK position!" At the moment of his declaration of this ability, Gaia began to stand from his kneeling position.

“Somehow I figured you’d do that.” Yuudai said, impressed.

"Battle Phase! Junk Archer attacks Gaia!" The Archer drew back his bow, aiming and firing an arrow of light at the heroic golem that stood before it.

“Activate Trap! Battleguard Howling!” Yuudai said, his face-down finally revealing itself. “When a Warrior type monster I control is targeted for an attack or monster effect, this triggers.” he smiled. “Now, I select one monster on your field and you take damage equal to it’s attack and it returns to the Extra Deck. Let’s hit Junk Gardna!”

Once Yuudai’s choice was selected, from the trap came a loud howling shockwave that hit Junk Gardna and immediately sent it off the field, straight back to Tatsuo’s Extra Deck.

Tatsuo’s Life Points: 8000 -> [1400 Damage Taken] -> 6600

Tatsuo clicked his tongue before beginning his second Main Phase. "I summon Junk Synchron from my hand!" he called out, an orange robot wearing a white scarf and a scarf appearing on the field as he did. "Now his effect activates! When he's Normal Summoned, I can Special Summon a level 2 or lower monster from my graveyard. I summon Quillbolt Hedgehog once more!"

Right beside Tatsuo’s Junk Synchron returned the small Quillbolt Hedgehog, who was more than happy to return to the field like this again.

"Now I tune my level 3 Junk Synchron with my level 2 Quillbolt Hedgehog and my level 1 Level Eater!" Tatsuo smiled as he raised his hand into the sky. "Return to the field, Junk Gardna!"

With a small sigh, Yuudai watched as Tatsuo brought back Junk Gardna. “Well...that was...great.” he said, apparently not 100% happy that Gardna returned.

"And now, I activate Level Eater's effect in the graveyard. I'll have it eat one of Junk Gardna's levels, making it 5, while summoning the bug to to field in Defense!" Tatsuo smirked and pointed to the sky dramatically. "This allows me to have the same exact field I had at the beginning of the turn! And with that, I end my turn!"

Turn 5:

.:Tatsuo Yahiro:.

LP: 6600

Hand: 2

Monsters: Level Eater [DEF | 0], Junk Gardna [DEF | 2600], Junk Archer [ATK | 2300]

Spells/Traps: Supply Squad

Grave: Quickdraw Synchron, Quillbolt Hedgehog, Synchron Explorer, Junk Synchron

“Huh, that’s pretty interesting.” Yuudai said, drawing his next card. Looking at his hand, he nodded and began to move a bit. “Alright. First off, I activate Fake Hero! Allowing me to Special Summon a Elemental HERO monster from my hand, at the cost of it not being able to attack. So we’ll summon up Elemental HERO Shadowmist!”

From behind Yuudai, namely his shadow, a new monster appeared on the field from his shadow. Now stood an ebony woman, moved to be in front of Yuudai, giving a small bow.

Elemental HERO Shadowmist

Lv. 4 | DARK

ATK: 1000 | DEF: 1500

“And by her effect since she was Special Summoned, I select a Change Quick-Play Spell from my deck.” Yuudai said, before smirking. “I’m choosing Form Change!” he said, watching as the card he requested was now appearing from his deck, allowing him to quickly add it to his hand. “Now, I Normal Summon! Elemental HERO Blazeman to the field!” Beside Shadowmist stood Blazeman, emerging onto the field in a fiery explosion.

Elemental HERO Blazeman

Lv. 4 | FIRE

ATK: 1200 | DEF: 1800

“And Blazeman effect triggers when it’s summoned, I gain a Polymerization from hand.” Yuudai said, before smiling. “Therefore, I’m adding Fusion Substitute to my hand!”

“Fusion Substitute?” Tatsuo asked, looking at his Duel Disk and clicking on the card that was just added to Yuudai’s hand. “Ahhhh. It’s always treated as Poly. That’s a pretty neat card there.”

“And then, I activate Blazeman’s second effect. By sending an Elemental HERO from the deck to the grave, Blazeman gains the attribute, attack, and defense of the monster until the End Phase.”

Taking a moment to breathe, Yuudai spoke once more. “I’ll be sending Elemental HERO Ocean to the graveyard, allowing Blazeman to gain the Water attribute and the attack and defense of Ocean.”

Elemental HERO Blazeman

Lv. 4 | FIRE -> WATER

ATK: 1200 -> 1500 | DEF: 1800 -> 1200

“Alright, it’s all here.” Yuudai said, before smirking. “I activate Fusion Substitute, targeting my Blazeman and Shadowmist and fusing them together!”

“Your justice is a fierce blizzard, entrapping evil-doers in its wake! Fusion Summon! The iceman cometh! Elemental HERO Absolute Zero!”

Elemental HERO Absolute Zero

Lv. 8 | WATER

ATK: 2500 | DEF: 2000

Absolute Zero simply descended in an icy fashion, landing in front of Yuudai and soon standing up with his arms crossed, staring at Tatsuo and his full field of monsters.

“Now, last but not least, I’m going to activate Form Change!” Yuudai said, holding up the card. “With this, I send one HERO Fusion monster back to my Extra Deck and...well, I think it’s better I show you! Absolute Zero!” With this, Absolute Zero raising itself on an icy pillar, and proceeding to remove it’s own helmet.

“Cast away your old face in favor of a new power! Let your light of justice shine the way for future generations! Transformation Summon! Masked HERO Koga! It’s showtime!”

Soon a bright light appeared from the icy pillar, causing it to shatter as now, the monster known as Masked HERO Koga descended onto the battlefield.

Masked HERO Koga

Lv. 8 | LIGHT

ATK: 2500 | DEF: 1800

“First a new Elemental HERO Fusion on the field...and now a Masked HERO.” Tatsuo said, almost in awe at this performance. “Wait...oh no...” Tatsuo looked over at the Masked HERO and saw that a silhouette of Absolute Zero stood beside him.

“Absolute Zero’s effect! It destroys all monsters my opponent controls!” Yuudai said, pointing his hand in Tatsuo’s direction. “Go! Justice Freeze!” he spoke, watching the silhouette of his monster rush forward and immediately slam its fist into the ground and immediately freezing Tatsuo’s monsters and without a second thought, had them crumble.

“Well, it’s not all bad.” Tatsuo said, pointing at Supply Squad. “Because you destroyed my monsters, I’ll be getting one free card.” he said, drawing one new card.

“Battle! Attack Tatsuo’s Life Points directly, Koga!” Yuudai said, watching Koga move at breakneck speeds to strike at Tatsuo directly, slashing him with his arm blades.

“Wait a minute!” Tatsuo said, holding up the Junk Gardna card. “You don’t get that attack. Gardna’s ability actually will be switching your monster’s position! So to Defense with you, Koga!”

Koga stopped suddenly and immediately knelt down in Defense. Yuudai smiled with a small sigh, before nodding. “Well that kind of sucks. I’ll end my turn. Now, let’s see what you got, Tatsuo!”

Turn 6:

.:Yuudai Kurogane:.

LP: 6700

Hand: 2

Monsters: Masked HERO Koga [DEF | 1800)

Spells/Traps: N/A

Grave: Elemental HERO Woodsman, Elemental HERO Flash, Polymerization, Oasis of Dragon Souls, Battleguard Howling, Elemental HERO Shadowmist, Elemental HERO Blazeman, Elemental HERO Ocean, Fusion Substitute, Fake Hero, Form Change

Tatsuo drew his card, looking at his hand. "I activate the Spell Card Tuning! This allows me to grab a Synchron tuner from my deck, for the cost of milling the top card of my deck after I shuffle it!" He explained as he reached into his deck. "The card I pick is QuickDraw Synchron!"

He pulled out the card before his deck was shuffled. "Please... Something good..." Tatsuo mumbled as he milled the top card of his deck... Call of the Haunted. "Dang it, tough break."

“Call of the Haunted? Yikes...” Yuudai said, shaking his head at seeing the trap being milled.

"Regardless, I discard a Level Eater to Special Summon QuickDraw!" Tatsuo said, summoning the cowboy once more. "And I activate one of my Level Eaters in the grave, reducing QuickDraw to 4 and summoning it in defense! Finally, I activate the effect of Quillbolt Hedgehog. When there is a tuner on the field, I can Special Summon it from fron grave, but it is banished when it leaves the field!"

Yuudai watched Tatsuo’s field grow at an exponential rate. “Setting up for another Synchro, huh Tatsuo?”

“Of course.” Tatsuo smiled with a small nod. "Now, I tune my level 4 QuickDraw Synchron with my level 2 Quillbolt Hedgehog! Get ready to meet my ace monster!" He placed his hands together and began to chant.

"Gather the resolve of all and weave it into a double helix. Drill a path to tomorrow! Synchro Summon! Pierce the heavens, Drill Warrior!"

From above, Tatsuo’s monsters flew and from where there were two...there was now only one. A mechanized warrior in orange armor and a white scarf, with a huge drill in its right hand.

Drill Warrior

Lv. 6 | EARTH

ATK: 2400 | DEF: 2000

“At this time, I activate Koga’s ability!” Yuudai quickly said. “Until the end of this turn, your monster’s attack will be dropped, all at the cost of one HERO monster from my grave being banished.” Quickly looking at his graveyard, Yuudai held out Elemental HERO Flash. “Drill Warrior’s attack will be dropping by 1100!”

Drill Warrior

ATK: 2400 -> -1100 -> 1300

With a grin, Tatsuo held out his hand. "Well normally, this would be a bad idea, but Drill Warrior is no ordinary monster. I can permanently half his attack to attack you directly! Go, Drill Warrior, attack Yuudai directly!"

Drill Warrior

ATK: 1300 -> 650

Drill Warrior's attack dropped before it flew at Koga, its drill spinning rapidly. However, it suddenly vanished, appearing in front of Yuudai and stabbing him with its drill.

Yuudai noticed this occurring and began to brace for impact, though he still was met with the drill striking him.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 6700 -> [650 Damage Taken] -> 6050

"Now, Main Phase 2!" Tatsuo folded his arms. "I activate the effect of my second Level Eater in the graveyard, reducing Drill Warrior's Level by one, and allowing me to summon it in Defense."

"And now, the best part of Drill Warrior's effect!" Tatsuo smirked. "By discarding a card, I can banish Drill Warrior until my next Standby Phase. I discard Breakthrough Skill to activate it... Drill Warrior, Dimensional Dig!" The monster in question spun its drill around, cutting into the fabric of reality and leaping into the hole it made."And with that, I end my turn."

Turn 7:

.:Tatsuo Yahiro:.

LP: 6600

Hand: 2

Monsters: Level Eater [DEF | 0] 2x

Spells/Traps: Supply Squad

Grave: Quickdraw Synchron 2x, Synchron Explorer, Junk Synchron, Junk Gardna, Junk Archer, Tuning, Call of the Haunted, Breakthrough Skill

Banish: Quillbolt Hedgehog, Drill Warrior [ATK | 2400 | Banished by Effect]

“Drill Warrior being banished...and discarding Breakthrough Skill, huh?” Yuudai muttered to himself, drawing his next card. Hmmm, Breakthrough Skill...if anything...he’s going to use that during the next turn to stop Koga. he thought.

“Firstly, I switch Koga back to attack mode.” Yuudai said, watching Koga finally standing up. “Then I’m playing one monster in Defense mode.” he said, playing a face down monster on the field. “Also! I’m giving you a heads up, Tatsuo. Koga gains 500 attack for each monster you control.”

Masked HERO Koga

ATK: 2500 -> +1000 -> 3500

“Well, that is pretty scary.” Tatsuo glancing at the card. “Good thing I banished Drill Warrior for the turn.”

“Battle! Masked HERO Koga! Attack the one Level Eater with Solaris Punishment!” Yuudai said, watching Koga speed towards the one Level Eater, slashing it a few times with his arm blades.

“Still, even if your monster gains a million points of attack, without piercing, you aren't hurting me while my monsters are in defense. Better still, destroying Level Eater gets me a card." Tatsuo said, drawing his new card thanks to Supply Squad

Yuudai nodded at Tatsuo’s determination from this. “Alright. I end my turn.”

Turn 8:

.:Yuudai Kurogane:.

LP: 6050

Hand: 2

Monsters: Masked HERO Koga [DEF | 1800)

Spells/Traps: N/A

Grave: Elemental HERO Woodsman, Polymerization, Oasis of Dragon Souls, Battleguard Howling, Elemental HERO Shadowmist, Elemental HERO Blazeman, Elemental HERO Ocean, Fusion Substitute, Fake Hero, Form Change

Banish: Elemental HERO Flash

Tatsuo drew his card. "And now, Drill Warrior returns to the field. Because he's being re-summoned, all his stats reset as well!" Drill Warrior emerged from the hole, arms folded and staring down Koga.

"And now, because it returned, it brought a friend from the graveyard. I return QuickDraw Synchron to my hand!"

Yuudai heard this and nodded, hitting his closed hand with his cards into his open palm. “Oh I get it! The effects that would normally hinder Drill Warrior because of its general halving effect, the second effect cancels it out and returns everything to normal.” he said, shaking his head some. “Wow. That is pretty amazing!”

"It gets better. Drill Warrior's attack isn't the only thing that resets. Its level does to, meaning I can use it to summon another Level Eater from the grave!" Tatsuo said as the ‘oh-so familiar process’ happened once more. "This is what happens when my deck gathers its resolve! The weak few gather together and combine their strength to take out the mighty one."

Masked HERO Koga

ATK: 2500 -> +1500 -> 4000

"Now, I half Drill Warrior's attack so I can attack your directly!" Tatsuo said.

Drill Warrior

ATK: 2400 -> 1200

Yuudai looked at Tatsuo and then at Drill Warrior. He knew what the guy was waiting for: Koga’s attack reduction effect. If he activated the effect right now, he knew that Breakthrough Skill would trigger and then his monster’s effect would then be negated. At the same time...would that really be bad?

Wait… he thought. He’s yet to move it into Battle Phase. Meaning...he still can Synchro if anything, especially since he brought Quickdraw to hand. Meaning…

“Alright.” Yuudai said, using his open hand to tell Tatsuo to ‘Bring it on’. “Show me what you can do, Tatsuo. Show me what you and your Junks’ resolve is!”

Tatsuo smiled at Yuudai's words, but realized that Koga's effect was not activating. Crap, I was depending on that. he thought to himself. I didn't want to waste my Breakthrough Skill on that... What do I do, what do I do?

He shook his head. Just going to have to do it and hope he doesn't have a stronger Hero. he opened his eyes and held out his hand. "I banish Breakthrough Skill from the graveyard, and target Koga! Now, it's effects are negated until the end of the turn!"

Masked HERO Koga
ATK: 4000 -> -1500 -> 2500 [Original Attack]

Yuudai sighed, seeing Koga’s effects now negated and Breakthrough Skill being used. “Well that sucks.” he said, shaking his head some.

"And now, I play my second copy of Supply Squad!" Tatsuo called out on. Gonna have to get him down in one giant move. "Now, by discarding Unknown Synchron, I Special Summon QuickDraw Synchron once more! And now, I tune together my Quickdraw Synchron with my two Level Eaters to summon a level 7 monster!"

I thought so...he had another Synchro planned. Yuudai thought, watching Tatsuo prepare his next Synchro.

"Gather the resolve of all and ignite them! Prove your worth by rushing those before us! Synchro Summon! Blaze on, Nitro Warrior!"

From the combining of Quickdraw and the Level Eaters, descended a strange creature. It had mechanized features in it, while at the same time looking quite ogre-ish in general. It let out a loud roar and had steam emerge from the exhaust pipes it had.

Nitro Warrior

Lv. 7 | FIRE

ATK: 2800 | DEF: 1800

"And now, I use two of its levels to summon back both Level Eaters, but this time in Attack position!" Tatsuo called out, the bugs rising up again.

"Now, on the turn I activate a Spell Card, Nitro Warrior gains 1000 attack!" Tatsuo explained. "So now, Nitro Warrior, attack Koga!!”

Nitro Warrior

ATK: 2800 -> +1000 -> 3800

Yuudai began to grit his teeth, watching Nitro Warrior striking down against Koga. Due to its effects being negated, it was back to 2500. Meaning this was going to hurt. Koga fought back the best he could, but in the end was destroyed.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 6050 -> [1300 Damage Taken] -> 4750

"Nitro Warrior isn't done yet! When it destroys a monster, it can take one Defense Position monster you control and switch it to Attack Position and then attack it as well!"

Yuudai looked at the Defense Position monster for a moment, before smiling some. “Very well.” he said, flipping the monster into face-up attack, revealing it to be a robotic canine. “Wroughtweiler is now in Attack Position.”

"Nitro Warrior attacks Wroughtweiler as well then!" Tatsuo called out, watching Nitro Warrior make a rampaging rush towards Wroughtweiler, destroying it instantly.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 4750 -> [3000 Damage Taken] -> 1750

“I...I activate Wroughtweiler’s effect!” Yuudai said with a small smile. “When it's destroyed and sent to the grave by battle, I add a Polymerization and one Elemental HERO monster from my grave to my hand.” he said, reaching into his grave and pulling out two cards. “I choose Polymerization and Elemental HERO Blazeman!”

"And now, my Level Eaters attack you directly!" Tatsuo watched as the two bugs took 600 Life Points each from Yuudai.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 1750 -> [1200 Damage Taken] -> 550

“T-Tch...man this isn’t going so good.” Yuudai groaned a bit, looking at Tatsuo and his Drill Warrior. “Buuuuut I’m not gonna lie, this is an amazing Duel!”

"Yeah...I’ll agree with you on that. Finally, Drill Warrior attacks to end this! Dimension... Drill... BREAKER!" Drill Warrior held its drill over its head, each word of the attack name causing the weapon to grow in size. It finally flew at Yuudai, and hit him with the mighty drill.

Yuudai’s Life Points: 550 -> [1200 Damage Taken] -> 0

DUEL OVER!

Tatsuro Yahiro Wins!

Yuudai was knocked back by the drill attack as he groaned and even started laughing. “J-Jeez...so that’s Junk, huh? Damn that was amazing!” he said, slowly getting up and proceeding to dust himself off.

Tatsuo moved towards Yuudai and held out a hand. “That was a pretty great Duel, Yuudai.” he said, waiting for Yuudai to accept the handshake.

After a moment, Yuudai only nodded and returned the handshake. “Definitely. I wasn’t expecting to have you end it like that with Nitro Warrior. Though I did figure you were waiting for me to activate Koga’s ability when you dropped Drill Warrior’s attack.”

“Yeah well, I had to do something.” Tatsuo laughed, before looking down at his Duel Disk, seeing the time. “CRAP!! We’re late for class!”

“We are? Jeez...” Yuudai sighed as he and Tatsuo started running out of the courtyard and back to class.

However, a bit aways from where the two students stood Dueling, was a figure emerging from the bushes, holding a camera. “Well, that was one amazing Duel. And it’s all documented~”

-Ending-

haha, been there, done that! xD

-I actually like the concept of using pre-existing deck archetypes in your story, it somehow gives the reader a solid grasp of the duel due to the cards' rulings and whatnot is already established in the real world, minus the unnecessary plothole armor cards made for just that specific scenario only! xD

(please let there be a Gladiator Beast cameo)

*fingers crossed*

Love your avi!

When will this be updated again, I am looking forward to seeing Synchros in action for the first time! I never properly watched 5DS.

Thanks!

Glad your showing interest in this. I will be continuing to work on this chapter's update as soon as possible. I'll try to at least have it finished by the end of the month, only cause I'm also trying to work with job searching and whatnot, plus it's summer...busy busy busy XD

No worries though! It'll be updated.

I'm usually a phantom reader, but the writing forum is so sluggish I wanted to comment and give a little support.

Awww, thanks Cakey! I'm glad to have another reader's support! ^^

It took a few minutes for me to catch it, but I did realize it's called Igirisu City because Igirisu is Japanese for England. Kinda clever.

Well due to what I was loosely basing this story on, it only makes sense that I chose that name of the city. I asked quite a few people before I went with it and they all agreed that it had to be done lol

Continuing on, like I mentioned before, I should be finishing this chapter before July is up. Job hunting is becoming a pain recently, so lot of my free time is dragging behind.

One question: Any of these characters ancestors of any Yugioh characters from across the generations?

An excellent question!

To which I respond with: No. While I AM planning for old YGO characters to cameo, none of the current roster of characters are descendants and/or ancestors of any YGO characters from any generation/series.

Well Duelist of the Roses was the inspiration, But it is a shame. I kinda see the likes of Jaden, Yusei, Yuma, Yuya and Yusaku as red rose duelists while Zane, Jack, Shark and DeClan are white rose duelists.

To be fair, its mainly the War of the Roses being the inspiration, rather than just Duelist of the Roses. Either way, while those characters aren't there for the respective Rose sides, it doesn't mean that things still won't be shown about a few YGO character cameos.

God the weeaboo vibe is strong in this story but I like the Action Duels since it is a nice new concept. It has a back to basics feel for me, a bit like Yugioh Duel Links, which is a breath of fresh air.

I like the call to Duelists of the Roses, a game with a lot of potential that hardly gets any love. I even wanted to incorporate my own War of the Roses theme in my own series, even with the Duelists of the Roses rules, but I abandoned it.

Thanks for enjoying it!

I'm glad there are more people reading this little story! Speaking of which, Chapter 4 is finally complete, so enjoy reading!

I thought of something else. You need to make your insults have more ring to them. Lancastrian Trash is not as catchy as Sliver Slacker. Lancaster Loser?

Sliver Slacker? I believe you are referring to Slifer Slacker...and to be honest, I feel Lancastrian Trash is a better fit than Lancaster Loser.

When writing this, while the main character is using HEROs and this is a Dueling Scool environment, I preferred to have it where it isn't directly copying GX. Therefore, that's why I chose Lancastrian Trash, as it shows that there is quite the bitter rivalry between the schools and even where one things themselves better than the other.
