Come one, come all to Summa Crossroads, the best goshdarn Minecraft server around. We have lots of cool stuff. I'll write about it later probably if there are things people think I should outline here!

Important bits:

Server IP

mc.summaxr.com

Server Version

Probably the latest, 1.11.2 as of 1/8/2017

What kind of world is that? Looks pretty neat. Also, what is the general atmosphere? Is it PVP? How much of the world has been destroyed/claimed already, and what respect is expected of the players to the world?

Survival. Mostly untouched. People are cool. You can kill other players if you want, but like, why? Everything is basically abundant and probably the only good reason to do so is if someone is being a jerk. No raiding / stealing / looting other people's builds. You should respect the world, it's pretty, and so building pretty things in it would be nice. Nobody's expecting you to be some Voxelbox masterbuilder, but like, put in a little effort.

tl;dr It's just a cool server?

Looks like a really neat map, I'll probably check it out. Though my experiences with Minecraft servers are usually not that long-lived, sort of just a small bit of fun. Are there any plugins or anything or is it all vanilla?

There are a lot of plugins! They do cool things. I have created a webpage with a blurb about some various features, but I don't want to get in trouble for advertising external websites, so I'll just be happy to answer your questions and tell you about them if we're on the server at the same time. Here's a short list of some cool stuff:

  • Also a custom nether
  • A gradually-expanding rogues gallery of extra-hard mobs, with extra-awesome accompanying loot
  • Mobs killed from farms won't drop loot, but mobs that you hunt will award 3x their regular drops (this change has been received with massive praise from users, they find they enjoy it more than just having farms)
  • There are some arenas wherein equipment is provided for you and your friends to fight increasingly difficult waves of mobs, and you get increasing rewards as you survive more and more waves. You get to keep the XP you earn, too.
  • There's a system for shops at spawn (and elsewhere, but spawn is probably one of the best places you could build a shop). Not too many people use it now, but it has the potential to be incredibly useful.
  • Assorted quests exist in the world. Some serve as introductions to the server and some of its plugins/features, others are daily/weekly quests to reward you for fairly routine tasks. The gold you earn from them (you also earn gold from the mob arenas and other things) can be spent in many ways, or used to trade with others - standard economy stuff. If you want to trade each other server gold for points on YCM, who am I to stop you?
  • On that note, I'm always trying to add more quests, and my current goal is probably to build out the "tutorial" quest series more. I'm having a think about what should be included in that and how to structure it. Recommendations are welcomed, and rewards will be given out for good suggestions.
  • There are a rather decent number of structured PVP arenas, which support solo duels or team play.
  • We also have some fun parkour stuff.
  • The auto-rotating messages that you see need to be updated (we use Discord instead of Mumble, and I need to add some new info) - they contain useful info, but could have a larger variety. I would gladly accept suggestions for these, too.
  • You can get drunk.
  • You can have one home on each world, not just one overall.
  • There are some neat things like Lifts that you can make to make your life easier or your creations more interesting.
  • We have mcMMO. It has an exponential EXP curve. You can pay for EXP with gold using the skill trainers around spawn.
  • There are assorted magic spells you can learn. I intend to add more, especially in the combat area. They use redstone to cast, alleviating the user complaint of too much redstone without any use for it.
  • The portals at spawn to the nether and the heavens (in the basement of the quest hall) both spawn you in random places each time you use them. Building your own nether portal will always take you to the same place. I'm trying to create a system for the heavens where players can build their own portals that work like nether portals, but this is more difficult than you might think.

That should cover a good bit of it.

So I haven't played in a Minecraft server in some time, I might be stupid and am doing something wrong. When I add a server to my list do I not just input the IP you listed in the "Server Address" box and go from there? I can't seem to connect.

Getting a "java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: no further information:" error.

Make sure you're on 1.11.2, the latest version, and that you type it in correctly.

mc.summaxr.com

You can also just copy and paste from the live map link, and delete the http://

I should also add that you need to own a legitimate copy of the game.

I'm on the newest version, I own a legit copy of the game, and I copy/pasted the address in the first place. I'll have to figure something out.

Try typing it out. When you copy and paste, it sometimes includes the newline character, which fails to parse. Spaced out for easy viewing: m c . s u m m a x r . c o m

Not yet. I typed out the address and that didn't work, been fiddling with my firewall ports, updated my Java to the latest one and uninstalled my older Java versions, nothing yet.

If you open a command prompt, are you able to ping mc.summaxr.com?

You can also try minecraft.summaxr.com, but unless your ISP is weird, there's no reason the short version shouldn't work. It uses an SRV record to forward, but works for most users. The difference is that minecraft.summaxr.com just forwards straight on to the host machine. The DNS stuff is cool because it allows you to load the map when you go to the URL in your browser, but also to load the server when you put it in the game.

Do me a favor and screenshot the settings that you have for the server in your "my servers" list.

So I found the Strip "Prosperus Gentlemens' Club." Which should be "Prosperous Gentlemen's Club" btw.

Also, I'm trying to do the quest to talk to the Skill Trainers but I'm hopelessly lost. I've only found the Master Repairman so far.

Haha, did you find the hidden switch to get in? If so, very good.

The skill trainers are in places suited to the skills they train. The map might be helpful, but also maybe not. If we're online at the same time, I'll help you find them.

I managed to find the skill trainers after about... 40ish minutes of running around in circles. I was looking in the shopping district area and not the areas they were actually in.

That said, the server is awesome! Melody and I hopped on for a while and did a round in the Underdome. We had a lot of fun and we're totally gonna be back on!
