I hope Luke doesn't die Q_Q

I think he might. Star Wars has never really been kinds to its main characters.

[spoiler=Like (entire series spoilers)]

Obi Wan, Anakin, and Padme were the main characters in the prequels, they all ended up dying. So did Mace Windu and Yoda.

The entire Rogue One cast.

Han Solo.

They're gonna have to kill off Leia now.

Now what would be especially tragic is if Chewbacca dies.

What if REY becomes a Sith, the palpatine's grandaughter storyline could work too

Luke would be the last jedi then

I'm pretty in favor of this approach. Possibly combined with a Kylo Ren redemption, reversing the roles from Force Awakens, culminating in a Skywalker on the side of light once again and the surprise!progeny of evil being defeated. It combines aspects of both the original trilogy (Skywalker vs Palpatine) and of the prequels (A character going from good in the first to evil in the last (also vice versa)).

You've seen the theory right? Similar combat styles and such?

Who do you think Snoke could be?

If he's not Plagueis, which would be preferable to me, then I think perhaps that what we've seen is not what he looks like, and he's projecting himself in the form of a damaged war-torn man to play on Kylo Ren's obsession with Darth Vader, ie to position himself as a (grand)father figure to Ren. In that case, he could either be anyone, or no one we've met.

I liked TLJ, probably in my top 3 Star Wars movies. I think it's debatably one of the best ones.

This movie took a lot of risks which is why I think audience reception has been polarizing, they either paid off or really didn’t. I want to say 90% of my friends and people I follow online liked the movie, but I've also seen people here and on a couple other sites I browse that had major grievances with it.

[spoiler=Spoilers]

I thought it was interesting Kylo killed Snoke but felt little anticlimactic and I’m hoping we get more info in Episode 9 on who he was. I can understand feeling frustrated on being invested in the mystery behind his character not being fulfilled, but if I'm honest, Snoke wasn't a compelling character and felt pretty boring. Kylo Ren and Hux are more interesting antagonists to watch.

Am I a little bummed out Rey’s parents aren’t anyone? I mean sure, but I would not call that bad storytelling by any means and exploring the fallout of her never finding out who her parents were can also be an interesting character arc. I still feel unsatisfied but I don't place fault with the movie for that.

The other plot hole I thought was weird was how the First Order didn’t really shoot at the rebellion and opted for them to run out of fuel instead.

I can agree with most people saying the casino planet was off, pretty convenient Finn and Rose were locked in a cell with a character that immediately broke them out. I wish they'd ran into Lando too, I was bracing myself the whole time for him to be the guy they were looking for.

Otherwise, everything in the movie was awesome and the above grievances didn’t really hamper my overall enjoyment. I’ve heard many people complain about the humor, but I thought it was a welcome addition and was an improvement. Maybe it's just me because I really like having it sprinkled in, part of why I love seeing Marvel movies.

Mark Hamill kicked ass, I enjoyed Luke dealing with all his turmoil up until he died. I wish his character had a happier arc, but the story they told here was executed well IMO. I did feel sad over his passing and thought it was a little abrupt, I also wished we got a fight between him and Kylo Ren. But casting himself as a force apparition was cool and everything he did in his last scenes were dope. I think this movie runs very well on pathos with the different dynamics at play, particularly Rey-Luke and Rey-Ren.

I also loved the very last scene with the orphan using the force, I think the upcoming generation is growing to be force sensitive compared to their predecessors and I think Rey and Kylo are a part of that.

This movie was not what I expected, which I think pretty much most people can say regardless of their final thoughts.

[spoiler=Also]

If you told me before this movie came out that Leia would fly through space using the force, Luke squeezes green milk from the tit of a space walrus, Kylo Ren and Rey touch each other, and that Rey gets personal with Luke's seaweed hole, I would've called you crazy.

And yet

I'm pretty on board with everything said here. I really enjoyed the movie, but I can recognize where I saw glory, other people could be frustrated.

[spoiler=By the way]

It wasn't a plot hole that they weren't shooting down the resistance. Their main ship was fast enough that it was staying juuust out of range for them to destroy it through its shields. As soon as the lesser ships did drop back far enough to reach they shot those, of course, but the flagship was out of range of anything more than light across-the-nose firing to "remind them [they're] still here."

Right, so as a long-time fan of the Star Wars movies, I gotta say I'm neutral to everyone's opinions of it. I was neither blown away nor disappointed, however expecting the former sorta led to the latter, which was my personal mistake, but onto the movie:

[spoiler=spoiler]I knew that Luke wouldn't be thrilled to join the fight. Hell, I'd be shocked if they made it that way.

That being said, I can't believe his daily routine on the island was the most interesting part of the movie. When he drank that creature's milk, I immediately pictured a "Got Milk?" caption in the corner. Also the guy pole-vaulting to spear a giant fish was pretty great.

Snoke was never very interesting. I could tell they borrowed some inspiration from the first movies during the scenes involving him:

  • Vader choked Admiral Motti in Episode 4. Snoke tossed around General Hux in Episode 8.
  • Emperor allowed the alliance to know the location of the shield generator in Episode 6. Snoke let Rey's and Ren's minds connect. Both had the intent for one side to fall for the bait.
  • Ren kills Snoke, then asks Rey to join him as he seeks to build a new era. A classic Star Wars moment.

That being said, if Snoke can feel literally every intent on Ren's mind, how could he have not sensed the lightsaber turning towards him? As uninteresting as he is, I would've taken a finale from the third movie involving him over the way they decided to kill him off. Shame.

As for Finn and (...wait, who was that other girl? *googles* oh yeah) Rose... I dunno, that whole arc with them finding the codemaster just felt... unnecessary and rushed. Sure, them being there eventually led to the future of the Resistance, but when Holdo was able to destroy Snoke's ship completely by ramming through it at hyperspeed, was it all worth it?

Regardless, there were a few moments of the movie that I genuinely loved:

  1. Finn vs. Phasma - Not only is the tension real here, but when you see a blaster shot being completely deflected by her armor, you can't help but be like "FINALLY, THE STORMTROOPER ARMOR IS DOING ITS JOB." Though when Finn cracked that one-liner at the end, it almost wasn't worth it, but still it was pretty great.
  2. Kylo Ren vs. Luke's Doppleganger - What a way to make an appearance, albeit a fake one. When Ren commanded all guns to fire relentlessly at him, Luke just calmly walks forward and brushes his shoulder. That had me funking rolling, even considering that there was no way he could've survived it even with the force. That being said, seeing Luke use the last of his energy to stall the enemy and then seeing him vanish was pretty emotional, but at the same time it just felt right.
  3. Leia using the force - I get that some people hated this part, but part of me has always considered that Leia has some trace of the force in her, so seeing it happen (albeit as a plot device) was pretty great.

So with that, in general the movie was pretty mediocre with a few cool parts and decent action throughout. 8/10 with bias, 7/10 without.

[spoiler=I thought the movie was quite awesome.]

That beginning scene with the bombers was definitely heavy. I can see why Leia immediately demoted Poe afterwards, in the state they were in those were some extremely heavy losses, and unlike stuff like the Death Star or Star Killer Base, taking out the Dreadnought was not required.

Leia using the Force was surprising, since I thought that was when they were going to kill her off since Carrie Fisher died, but not ridiculous. After all, "The Force is strong in my family, my father had it, I have it, my sister has it." She's been shown to have some force-sensitivity with her connections to Luke in the original trilogy and to Han and Kylo in TFA and this one. Plus, I haven't gotten into the old expanded universe any, but from what I understand there were multiple instances of her advancing her Force abilities. And even discounting that, you could say her floating herself back to the ship was a kind of reflex since she was in mortal danger, like how moms lift cars off babies with adrenaline or something. I wasn't expecting her to be relevant throughout the movie since I wasn't sure how much had been done in this one before Carrie Fisher's death.

I can definitely see why the term "sidequest" was used by some people describing Finn and Rose (who I greatly enjoyed as a character, which I didn't see coming, I wasn't expecting her to be that important) trying to get a coder to break into the ship. There were often multiple story branches in Star Wars movies, and their escapade still felt very "Star Wars" to me, if that makes any sense. Some may say them finding the backup coder (did we ever learn his name?) in prison with them was too convenient, but I'm not really one to be bothered by that sort of stuff, obviously things have to happen a certain way to advance the plot. His ragged appearance and stutter made him endearing to me, and I loved his talk of good/bad and how he showed that the owner of the ship they stole was selling weapons to both sides. I'd like to see him again, but I'm not sure in what capacity he'd show up if he did.

The way Snoke died was pretty awesome, though it's a shame we still know basically nothing about him. Though to be fair, I don't think we knew much about Darth Sidious before the prequels came out. The fight following his death with those red guys was great, I liked the choreography and the one guy who had the laser whip thing that he used to pull them in after catching the lightsaber was cool. Also shout out to the one guy who just straight up blocked a lightsaber strike with his wrists, that must be some good armor. And I liked the "The king is dead, long live the king." bit they did when Kylo Ren took command.

And speaking of Kylo Ren, I really liked him in this movie. In TFA I thought he was just okay, and I awaited his potential in this one, and he didn't disappoint me. There's still some conflict in him, he couldn't kill his mom in the end and there had to be something for Snoke to flare up to trick Rey. But even so, he had conviction, and his anger this time felt like genuine anger and not the whiny Anakin-esque kind of anger he had in TFA.

Phasma doing something this movie was great. The fight between her and Finn was damn cool, and the last shot of her eye and falling into the fire was awesome. Though I am sad she's gone, I still feel like she had some wasted potential. Actually having armor that blocked a blaster shot was good. I understand that Stormtrooper armor is more suited for extreme environmental protection when compared to Clone Trooper armor which is why blasters are generally more effective, but still I can't believe it took this long to have someone with a good suit of armor on. And regarding Finn's attempted suicide dive into the cannon, I went back and forth on whether or not I thought he was going to die or not, and right before Rose crashed him out the way I was convinced and shocked that they were actually going to go through with killing him off.

I liked cranky old man Luke. Obi-wan and Yoda were both super calm old dudes, this was a nice change of pace, even if I didn't expect this from him. His daily routine was fun, and once R2 managed to convince him to help (I legit teared up upon seeing the old Leia recording, I guess that's what they call getting hit with a wave of nostalgia) he still had cool legit lessons. And while I'm sad he's gone now, he totally went out like a badass. When he first showed up to Leia, since it was only those two in the shot I thought he was just having a connection with her like Rey and Kylo (whose sections I really liked) were having earlier in the movie, and that he'd disappear after winking to C3-PO. But then he strode out to meet the enemy in his old black outfit, and the way he brushed some dust off after the Walkers shot at him was great. The fight with Kylo was cool, if short, and the reveal that Luke was only a long-range apparition was very satisfying. I wonder if we'll see him in the next episode as a force ghost.

I wonder if Yoda knew that the Jedi texts had already been put in the Falcon (I can only assume Rey took them when she left), or if him striking the tree with lighting was going to happen regardless of them being there.

Also, Holdo taking out the main ship like that was breathtaking, it might be my favorite scene in the whole movie. The cinematography was amazing and when she blasted through, the entire movie theatre was silent. At first I thought she was kind of a jabroni but I'm glad she did good in the end.

I think that's more or less everything. I understand them being safe with Episode VII after how the prequels wend down, and I enjoyed the direction they went with this one. It's definitely one of my favorites, alongside Episode V, VI, and Rogue One.

EDIT:

[spoiler=A couple more points.]

It's sad that Chewie is pretty insignificant as a character now that Han is dead, but I feel like it's unfortunately unavoidable. Their character dynamic was so integral to Chewie especially, and you can't really do a dynamic duo with just one member. It'd be like if we had Groot without Rocket Raccoon or something.

And while Holdo's light speed crash was indeed impressive, it begs the question why it hadn't been done before (that we know of) and whether or not it will be done again. One of my friends brought that up, and after some thought, I think they just can't afford to. The rebels are run ragged, Holdo's crash to let everyone else escape was a last ditch effort. It did invalidate Finn and Rose's whole infiltration escapade, but the opposite is true as well. If Finn and Rose had succeeded, the Rebels wouldn't have had to resort to crashing their only flagship.

Even if the Rebels continued that tactic and let's say, took out 10 First Order ships for every 1 of theirs, they'd still run out of resources first. And that's assuming a consistent success rate, eventually the First Order would form a countermeasure. Meanwhile, the First Order would never have to resort to such tactics in the first place, their ships and fleets are bigger and stronger and if they want something destroyed they'll just shoot it down.

Also, I like how porgs are a thing because the island they used for Luke's island is a wildlife preserve full of puffins, and they couldn't physically get rid of them. So it was easier to edit them into porgs than to digitially remove them. They're cute af.
