Sandragon [Written]

This has a pretty basic premise to it, actually: I like Dragons, and the AGM features more than one Dragon-restricted Rank 5 without many ways of accessing them. They exist, of course, but . . . well, it's like Rank 9 pre-Kings/Dracos. Is there a way to make it? Yes, yes there is. Is it in any way likely that you will? No.

As for the basic themes, Sandragon is sand + dragon- essentially, dragons that can swim through sand, like landsharks.

[spoiler= Main Deck Monsters]

Sandragon Striker

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 2300/0

If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters: You can Special Summon this monster from your hand. During the turn this monster is Normal or Special Summoned, you can change this monster to face-up Defense Position: Special Summon 1 "Sandragon" monster from your hand, except "Sandragon Striker".

Sandragon Burrower

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 2100/1500

You can Special Summon this monster from your hand by discarding 1 card. When this monster is Normal or Special Summoned, you can add 1 "Sandragon" card from your Deck to your hand (you can only activate this effect of "Sandragon Burrower" once per turn).

Sandragon Blaster

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 2000/2000

You can Special Summon this monster from your hand, but if you do, this monster's original ATK and DEF are halved. If this card is in your Graveyard, you can send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard: Special Summon this monster. You can only activate each effect of "Sandragon Blaster" once per turn.

Sandragon Amphithere

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 2200/700

If a monster you control is destroyed, you can shuffle 1 "Sandragon" card in the Graveyard into the Deck: Special Summon this monster from your hand. If this monster is in the Graveyard and a "Sandragon" monster is sent to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon this monster (you can only activate this effect of "Sandragon Amphithere" once per turn).

Sandragon Defender

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 200/2800

You can discard this card: Add 2 "Sandragon" monsters with the same name from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand (you can only activate this effect of "Sandragon Defender" once per turn). If this monster is Normal or Special Summoned, you can Special Summon 1 "Sandragon" monster with a Level from your Graveyard.

Sandragon Ore Jaw

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 1900/2200

If you control a face-up "Sandragon" monster with 2000 or more ATK, you can Special Summon this monster from your hand. While you control this face-up monster, "Sandragon" monsters you control can be treated as Level 9 for an Xyz Summon. If this card is sent to the Graveyard, you can add 1 "Sandragon" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Sandragon Ore Jaw" (you can only activate this effect of "Sandragon Ore Jaw" once per turn).

Sandragon Rapid Cutter

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 1800/2100

Once, during the turn this monster is Normal or Special Summoned, you can Special Summon 1 "Sandragon Rapid Cutter" from your hand. If this card is in your Graveyard, you can Special Summon 1 "Sandragon Rapid Cutter" from your hand or Deck. If you control a face-up "Sandragon" Xyz monster, you can shuffle this card from your Graveyard into your Deck: The next time you would take damage, that damage is reduced to 0. You can only activate each effect of "Sandragon Rapid Cutter" once per turn.

Sandragon Mimic

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 1800/1800

If this card is detached from an Xyz monster you control, you can destroy 1 card on the field.

Sandragon Tyrant

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 2000/400

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. If your opponent would target a "Sandragon" monster you control for a card or effect, you can Special Summon this monster from your hand, and if you do: If that monster has an original Level, you can, immediately after this effect resolves; Xyz Summon 1 Dragon-Type Xyz monster using monsters you control as Material. "Sandragon" monsters you control can be treated as Level 9 for an Xyz Summon. If this monster is detached from an Xyz monster you control, draw 1 card. You can only activate each effect of "Sandragon Tyrant" once per turn.

Mystic Sandragon

EARTH - Level 5 - Dragon/Effect - 0/0

You can Special Summon this monster (from your hand) by banishing 1 Spell Card from your hand or Graveyard. If an Xyz monster with this card as Xyz Material attacks, you can banish 1 card on the field at the start of the Damage Step. During either player's turn, if you control a "Sandragon" Xyz monster with no Materials: You can attach this card from your Graveyard to that card as Material (you can only activate this effect of "Mystic Sandragon" once per turn).

You can only activate each effect of "Maximum Dragon Xyz" once per turn.

Shifted Sandragon

You can banish this card from your Graveyard to target 1 "Sandragon" Xyz monster you control: Special Summon 1 "Sandragon" Xyz monster from your Extra Deck exactly 2 Ranks higher, using that target as Xyz Material (This is treated as an Xyz Summon. Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on the new monster).

Rank-Up-Magic: Sandragon Force

Quick-Play Spell

If this card is added to your hand during your Normal Draw, you can Special Summon 1 Rank 7 or lower "Sandragon" Xyz monster from your Extra Deck, and attach up to 2 "Sandragon" Spell/Trap Cards from your hand or Graveyard to that monster as Xyz Material (this is treated as an Xyz Summon). You can target 1 "Sandragon" Xyz monster you control: Special Summon 1 EARTH Xyz monster exactly 2 Ranks higher than the target, using that target as Xyz Material (This is treated as an Xyz Summon. If this card is destroyed by your opponent's card effect: Special Summon 1 "Sandragon" monster from your Graveyard with its effects negated.

Dragonic Sandstorm

Continuous Spell

You can Normal Summon Dragon-Type monsters using 1 less Tribute than normal. If you Normal Summon an EARTH Dragon-Type monster, draw 1 card. If this card is destroyed, you can target 1 of your banished "Sandragon" Spell/Trap Cards: Set it.

Extra Sandragon

Normal Trap

Attach this card to a "Sandragon" Xyz monster as Material. If this card is in your Graveyard, and your opponent Special Summons a monster(s): You can Special Summon this card from your Graveyard as a Normal monster (EARTH-Attribute/Level 5/Dragon-Type/2000 ATK/2000 DEF), but banish it when it would be sent from the field to the Graveyard (This card is NOT treated as a Trap Card.)

Sandragon Seal

Counter Trap

●5: Destroy it.

●7: Banish it.

●9: Banish it face-down.

●11: Banish all cards activated before this card in the Chain, face-down.

Once per turn, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to add 1 Level 5 or lower Dragon-Type monster from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand. If this monster is destroyed, you can target 1 other Rank 5 or lower Xyz monster in your Graveyard: Special Summon that monster with this card as Xyz Material.

Superior Sandragon - Enemy Eater

EARTH - Rank 5 - Dragon/Xyz/Effect - 2400/2200

Oh, by the way: anyone who posts a good pure or mostly-pure Sandragon build gets 500 Points.

Good constructive criticism is worth a rep.

Wow, these are insane, and in an overpowered, bad way.

I see some hard OPTs missing, like in Burrower, Defender, Maximum Dragon Xyz, Quick Crusher, as well as the grave effect of Ore Jaw, which of course can lead to massive searches, and consequently, monster spam. I suggest to put regular or hard OPTs in those effects.

Then, you got waaay too many cards for an archetype. I'm counting 10 monsters, 9 Spell/Traps and 9 Xyzs; way too much, you can find archetypes functioning just fine with about half of those numbers.

Also making so many Xyzs in a way is unfair since you make them more versatile by giving them a larger Extra Deck toolbox that, in addition to the generic and semi-generic Xyzs they can inherently access, allows them to answer different scenarios, and thus leaving them less weaknesses and making it more difficult for the opponent to fight them.

By the way, the RUM states that it attaches Tokens to an Xyz, but that's impossible by card mechanics since Tokens cannot be used as Xyz Materials.

[spoiler=Decklist]

Monsters: 21

x3 Sandragon Burrower
x3 Sandragon Blaster
x3 Sandragon Amphithere
x3 Sandragon Defender
x3 Sandragon Ore Jaw
x3 Sandragon Rapid Cutter
x3 Sandragon Mimic

Spell/Traps: 19

x1 Foolish Burial
x3 Maximum Dragon Xyz
x2~3 Sandragon Earth Burst
x3 RUM Sandragon Force
x3 Return of the Dragon Lords
x3 Dragon Shrine
x5+ staples and/or techs: Raigeki, Twin Twisters, Dimensional Barrier, Solemn Strike, Sandragon Seal, Foolish Burial Goods

Extra Deck:
x2 Quick Crusher
x1 Rapid Grinder
x2 Gravel Tomb
x1 Volcasaurus
x1 Wind-Up Zenmaioh
x1 Gaia Dragoon
x1 Subterranian Matriach
x2 Liquiefaction Master
x1 Instant Burial
x1 True King V.F.D.

x1 tech/meta call: Shark Fortress, Tiras, Enterblathnir

x1 Durendal (w/ True King engine)
x1 Tremor Beast (if the RUM is consistent enough)

Of course, after hypothetical tests I could evaluate the abundance of revival and milling cards and adjust accordingly. A promising option is a True Draco engine with Dragonic Driagram and True King Lithosazim popping your Sandragons to either trigger on-destruction effects (e.g Amphithere) or use their graveyard effects (e.g. Blaster Ore Jaw, Rapid Cutter) , while Lithosazim will double as material for a Rank9.

I added the recommended OPT effects, although the lack of them was initially mostly intended to add some speed to a Rank 5 archetype, something inherently kinda bricky. I hadn't realized they'd be that bad.

I admit, I've got a thing for bigger archetypes, although I hadn't thought that 28 cards was considered big. Then again, I think that these 10-16 card archetypes that have become the norm are just puny, so maybe I know nothing.

I'd considered that, but the problem is that there's no way to give an Xyz monster Materials through a card effect that isn't either slow (I noted that you didn't put in Extra Sandragon, or really any of the archetypal Traps) or reliant on existing cards on the field, so I had to improvise. If I just said to give it Materials, the "from where" thing would come into play, and to attempt to rectify the issue I just gave it a pair of Tokens. If I could find a way to write the effect without using Tokens as Xyz Material, I would, but Konami hasn't made a card that does what this one needs to.

Thanks for the criticism, and the Deck list!

Instead of Tokens, you can make the card attach any Sandragon Spell/Traps in the grave, or Sandragon Monsters in the Extra Deck. But still, being rewarded with a free Xyz just for topdecking the card, in addition to keeping the Spell for a Rank-Up play, is pushing it too far, IMO; I would be more comfortable if it didn't have the topdeck effect at all.

I didn't find "Extra Sandragon" appealing, personally: the on-field effect is weak IMO, and the in-grave effect is unreliable by depending on the opponent's actions. If anything, I would tech 1 along "Foolish Burial Goods".
