[spoiler=Chapter 1: New Days]

Yataro yawned as he stood up from his bed while proceeding to stretch his arms out forcing a couple cracks on his neck and triceps. He was severely sore from physical training. It didn’t stop him though from playing games. The 15-year-old boy limped over to his bathroom and picked up a toothbrush alongside toothpaste and squirted a bit of the white paste onto his brush. He gave another yawn as he began to brush his teeth.

Wonder what will happen today…?’ Yataro thought to himself. ‘Maybe the same old things like classes… club… and walking home again. Nothing new, everything old.’

As he rinsed his mouth clean of the bubbly toothpaste, he grinned to himself brightly at the mirror reflecting his soft cheeks, clear amber eyes, slightly chapped pink lips, and his unforgettable shining dirty blonde hair. However, his expression did not last long as his phone screeched a tone he hated. Yataro grabbed a towel on his way out of the bathroom and searched around his room for the phone and found it in his jacket pocket. He stared blankly at the caller ID.

Mira…’ He scrunched the towel in hand and cracked his neck. ‘What would she want so early in the morning?’ Sighing, he answered the phone and placed it near his ears and held it with his shoulder while grabbing a shirt to wear for the day.

“Hey, Yataro! Want to go to the mall with me, Fuyuha, and Adam?” Mira said giggling.

“Maybe…,” Yataro quietly muttered.

“Come again? I didn’t hear that.”

Yataro looked around pacing back and forth thinking to himself. It was his day off of school alongside Mira, Fuyuha, and Adam. Biting his lips, he gave it a final thought after what seemed like minutes within the seconds he was deciding what he would do.

“Sure, I guess.” Yataro replied.

Yataro dressed himself in a black t-shirt under a gray sleeveless jacket rimmed with a dark blue color alongside his black pants that were slightly tight on him. Then he grabbed his phone and slipped it inside his pocket after putting on white-silver earbuds into his ears and turned on his music on his phone. He grabbed his house keys and opened the front door to his apartment. Yataro gave one last glance at his dim, dreary, and lonely apartment, void of any other noise but his own.

“I’ll be back, Mom… Dad…” he sighed one last time and headed down the stairs on the side of the apartment complex he resided in. Sluggishly walking down, he looks around to avoid his troublesome neighbors. He didn’t necessarily despise them, but he did find them quite pesky and utterly annoying. Yataro looked both ways before crossing, although internally he was screaming to just jaywalk the street because he actually never cared in the first place. However, he had a principle he followed by.

Abide by the rules of the world, and one day you will be rewarded.’ He remembered who it was that said that to him. Yataro pulled out his wallet and took a peek at a picture hiding behind his school ID. It was him.

“Liar… why do everyone lie to me?” Yataro kept walking and before he even realized it, he was sitting at the center fountain of the mall waiting for his friends. He squinted at the photo in his hands. Shaking his head, he carefully placed the picture back into its place inside his wallet as delicately as possible as if attempting to preserve it for the future. He let another sigh out.

Suddenly, without a sound, Mira popped into his field of view and Yataro could see the huge grin plastered on her terrible and agonizingly bright plump face featuring her dark brown eyes and her dark skin with her shimmering gray hair. She was giggling like always. Yataro always wondered how she could put up this persona of hers for so long without even showing hints of depression or anger. It amazed him, as if Mira was a creature from another planet who would come down only to show itself that it was human like everyone else even though it was clear that she was not. But, to disagree with Yataro’s imagination, she was precisely of a human being, no doubt to his own digression.

“What’s got you down so much, Yataro?” Mira held her hands behind her back as she faintly smiled.

Yataro waved his hands in front of him to assure her that he was okay without a single word despite his somber mood. It was then that Adam and Fuyuha came into his vision that he stood up and waved at them to greet the two. They waved back, with one being nonchalant and the other as if tired. Mira then raised her hands eagerly like a kid wanting to be picked as an example in a classroom. Yataro slapped her hands down as it was attracting a bit of attention from everyone else.

“Idiot… what are you doing?!” Yataro grumbled. “So what are we doing?”

“We’re going to window shop!” Mira stuck her hand out with a peace sign grinning happily and energetically.

Yataro immediately facepalmed at that. He always wondered if he even belonged here with them, especially with Mira. She was too positive for his liking, but he didn’t mind it for the most part. He shook his head at the sheer thought of changing their friendships. At that moment, Mira began strolling around the mall. Yataro, Adam, and Fuyuha had no choice but to follow the cheery girl.

From uninteresting beauty shops to the gaming universe, Mira had basically explored the whole mall. Literally, there was nowhere else to go. Sitting down on the center fountain again, Yataro sighed in exhaustion. He was still sore from his physical training. It didn’t help that just today Mira decided to bring them to the mall to adventure around. Cracking his neck, he looked around as Mira came back with burgers on a tray. There were even fries and drinks for every one of them. Yataro gulped as Mira set the tray onto the table and sat down in a chair. They each took a burger and began eating. Yataro munched on the sinfully delicious burger while downing some of his drink. He was hungry. It had been nearly four hours since he woke up without breakfast so he demolished his meal quickly. The others looked at him.

“Geez, are you that hungry, Yataro?” Adam asked.

Yataro merely nodded before sipping his soda. It was refreshing in a way that it somehow cleansed his mouth. It felt light yet bubbly as it coursed down his mouth through his throat. He huffed as he stood up from the table.

“Isn’t it about time we go?” Yataro said. He looked at his watch. It was three sixteen p.m.

“Hmmm… yeah, I suppose we can go now,” Mira said.

“Okay, but first, let me use the restroom, yo,” Adam quickly jumped towards the restroom leaving Fuyuha, Mira, and Yataro standing at the central fountain. It didn’t take long, but he returned with a weird, relieved smile colored onto his face. It was tremendous how one restroom trip could do to a 15-year-old boy.

The group walked out of the mall together talking to one another, excluding Yataro who was too busy listening to his own music. Yataro looked ahead at the twilight. It was the same as ever, the same as yesterday, and the day before, and so on. As they walked by a park and another fountain, the said fountain immediately activated startling the group of friends enjoying their relaxing stroll.

“Uwah! What the…?” Adam shrieked.

The fountain sprayed water into the air beautifully as the water rolled down the sides to the bottom layer just to repeat the process over and over. The sky was painted a dark blue shade which faded into a bright orange hue that splitted the sky. Whether the sight was amazing, it was still the same for Yataro. It was the same old thing that he saw days back. They all looked up still at the sight of the tranquil horizon.

Yataro noticed the many smaller details. The distant stars were fading one by one and reappearing, like a blinking light. He reached out as if to touch the stars. It felt all too familiar. He had already done this that same day a few nights ago.

Nothing new, everything old. Will there be something that will excite my desperate lust for a refreshing journey?’ Yataro puffed a bit of air. He squinted his eyes focusing himself on the star at the tip of his slim index finger. It kept shining on unlike the other stars. With a flash of light, Yataro screeched as a searing pain deeply inserted itself inside him. He looked around to see Mira, Fuyuha, and Adam frozen in time. Then, he saw a mysterious black door sitting in front of the fountain.

“What the hell is going on?” Yataro observed his surroundings. He couldn’t feel the winds blowing as it should be. This was new to him. Something he never felt before. Yataro could feel the burning flames of excitement inside him. He rushed over to the door.

Was this the fateful day his life would change?

Yataro shakily held the doorknob pondering on what could be inside. It had to be something he had never seen before. This was like a game, or a manga, or even an anime series. He liked it. Eyeing around, he made sure he wasn’t dreaming as he waited a few seconds to “wake up”.

The stained glass flooring that looked as if shattered reflected the light around it that shined from the top with a small opening of light. Yataro stepped inside and looked behind him at Mira, Adam, and Fuyuha. As he stared at each of them, time resumed for them individually.

“What the…?!” Mira looked flabbergasted that time stopped. She blinked and turned her attention to Yataro that was on the other side of the opened door. She jumped her way into it and met Yataro eye to eye. “What happened?” Yataro merely shrugged as he too did not know anything.

Fuyuha stepped over to the two with Adam following behind. “What the hell is this?” Fuyuha grumbled. As Adam entered through the door, the said door closed itself behind Adam pushing him in forcefully. Adam fell onto the ground face flat. While Fuyuha helped Adam to his feet, Mira and Yataro observed their surroundings. As Yataro moved towards the center, with a sudden flash, a man appeared in a blue garb rimmed with what looked like crossing white threads, embroidered with a shiny ruby on the chest below the neck. His hair was garmented with a few black and blue striped hairpin lined up on the left side of his white bangs that fell down past his eyes. His hair seemed clean and composed compared to Yataro’s untamed madness. The boots that the man wore were the reflection of the color scheme of his garb as the main palette was white and the threading that went through it was a neon blue.

The man gave them a slight smile, if it could be called that, as it was more of a smirk, one that intended to provoke them. Yataro lightly stepped back to his friends that had already gathered in front of the closed door. “Hello, my newfound sheeps. I am the shepherd that will grant you something that you wish for,” the man stated sternly.

Yataro eyed him with suspicion and the man took notice of this instantly.

“Do not be alarmed.”

“Why shouldn’t we be?!” growled Yataro. “Tell us your name!” Yataro frantically pointed at the mysterious man looking to instill a bit of fear into him. But to no avail, it wasn’t effective.

The man chuckled as he snapped a finger. A piece of paper with four dotted lines materialized itself in front of the group of friends. Cautioned about the man, Yataro snatched the paper from thin air quickly. He scanned the paper. It was a contract of sorts. With a brief flash of light like an entrance of a mediocre character in an anime, a quill pen appeared in the hands of Yataro. He lifted his face to the man and put up a stoic front.

“Who are you, and what is this?” Yataro inquired.

The man, once again, chuckled aloud, baffling Yataro and his friends. “My name is Ikazaki.” The man purposefully stopped himself and then continued after the pause. “This is the Contract of Miracles which holds the power to reveal the inner strengths in each of you, of course, accompanied by a journey. There you will find your answer, and by the end of it, you will find what you’ve sought out for.”

Abide by the rules of the world, and one day you will be rewarded.’ The words rang inside Yataro’s mind repeatedly. Yataro clenched the pen in his hand and signed the Contract of Miracles impulsively without contempt to any consequences. He handed the pen over to Mira and she eyed it warily.

“A-are you sure about signing this ‘Contract of Miracles’?” Mira hesitated. Slowly, she wrote her signature onto the second dotted line and passed the pen back to Fuyuha.

“If… Yataro is doing it, then I guess I will too,” Fuyuha plainly declared. His name was left under Mira’s own as he tossed it over to Adam.

Adam cracked his neck and signed the paper silently. As he stepped back, the Contract of Miracles disappeared. “And that’s that,” said Adam.

Ikazaki folded his arms and nodded. “Then let your journey be a good one.”

As time resumed, the door closed and the group found themselves standing where they were before time had stopped. Everything continued like normal.

“Did that really… just happen?” Yataro mumbled to himself.

[spoiler=Chapter 2: Abide by the Law]

Yataro woke up once again in his bed, tired and dreadful. There was nothing worse than a bad night sleep. Feeling sluggish, he walked over into his kitchen through a small corridor between his bathroom and another room, which he deemed his “Parent’s Room”. He opened his fridge and pulled out an egg carton before staring at the stove clock. It was 7:13 a.m.

“s***,” Yataro muttered. He was nearly late for school as it started at 7:30 a.m. Having no time for breakfast, he ran back to his room and struggled to get his school uniform on. Sprinting to school, Yataro met up with Mira. Saying his hellos to passersby whom he had met throughout his life, he talked to Mira about various things, more specifically, the events of yesterday.

Mira sighed. “Just what the heck was that?”

Yataro shrugged and kept walking. He yawned from his exhaustion and lack of sleep while Mira energetically tapped her fingers on her chin while tilting her head in confusion deep into her own thoughts. “Think of anything yet, Mira?” Yataro yawned once more.

“Nope, nothing. Except the idea that this is like an action manga or anime that people watch.” Mira kept her pace as she looked through her phone looking up something on Google.

Yataro thought about it himself too. ‘What could happen to us that would sprout a damn journey?

Arriving at the school gates at 7:27 a.m., the duo met with their other two, Adam and Fuyuha. Having all wondered about Ikazaki and the “Contract of Miracles”, they secretly worried what their journey would be by signing the contract. Fuyuha tapped his foot lightly thinking. Then, he reached one conclusion.

“This contract that we signed, it doesn’t really apply to us right? Since we’re not adults?” Fuyuha bit his lips.

“Yeah, but this isn’t any old contract that we know of, I mean hell, time stopped for us didn’t it?” Yataro added on.

Adam scratched the back of his neck. “Haha, if that is so, then I suppose this is out of our world.”

Yataro blinked and the words of a person repeated in his head like a broken record. ‘Abide by the rules of the world, and one day you will be rewarded.’ Humming to himself, he shrugged it off and quietly headed to his classroom. The other three stared as he walked off silently. Hearing the warning bell, the rest of the group went to their class.

The door to Yataro’s classroom struck open as the teacher entered pridefully. He looked up at the students seated in their assigned desks.

“Everyone, are we ready to start class now?” The teacher cocked his head giving off a bright personality yet it was also unnerving to Yataro. Then he realized it. The teacher looked just like him.

Ikazaki.

“I am your new English teacher starting from today,” the man said. “I am Ikazaki Kurogana. It is a pleasure to teach you all.” He eloquently bowed and winked. The girls squealed in delight.

“I wonder if he has a girlfriend!”

“What if he’s single?! I hope he is!”

“He’s so hot!”

“I’d go gay for him.”

Yataro slammed his face into his desk at what happened. ‘He is here!!!!’ Thinking to himself, he peeked over his arms and the party hadn’t stopped. The girls were clutching their chest and acting very fangirl-like while the majority of the boys, save for a few, were overtaken by jealousy. Yataro sighed.

“This will be an eventful day…,” Yataro clenched his teeth. After classes ended, Yataro picked up his bag and sprinted out the door like no tomorrow. No one had even left yet and the bell barely rang. Going by Fuyuha’s classroom, Fuyuha barely stepped out before being pulled away by Yataro. They arrived at the rooftop of their school. “I brought Fuyuha, Mira.”

“Thank you, Yataro,” said Mira. “Now then, what the heck happened yesterday?!”

Everyone sighed. “No one knows Mira!” They all yelled.

The group sighed in unison. “What do we do?” Yataro said. “Nothing’s changed. Everything is still the same. Maybe all of that was just a lie.” Yataro felt the events of yesterday was just a dream. If so, it wouldn’t explain the appearance of the new teacher Ikazaki.

“Maybe,” Fuyuha blew a bit of air.

Then, a brown haired girl came in pulling another girl with long black silky hair. “I’m here Yataro!”

Yataro blankly returned the greeting. “Finally here Sakaichi. Oh and you brought Malina too.”

“Yeah, I did. I felt like she might become lonely if I didn’t bring her along.”

He chuckled at this. “Always caring about others huh.”

Sakaichi nodded. She walked over with Malina and stood beside Mira. The winds blew past them. Yataro would feel the light touch of the cold gale going past his fingers. It was cool. Fuyuha looked in the direction of the rooftop entrance as there was a sound of the door opening.

“Oh my, it seems you’ve all gathered without me having to put the necessary preparations,” the man came in. It was Ikazaki. “But there are two guests that I do not recognize.” Ikazaki surveyed around. Then, his eyes locked onto Yataro’s.

Yataro felt a bit overwhelmed by Ikazaki’s presence. His heart beated slightly faster and his legs felt more energy than ever.  Ikazaki snapped his fingers and a bracelet appeared on Adam’s left wrist. A ring materialized on Fuyuha’s right ring finger. Then, a necklace wrapped itself around Mira’s neck. Lastly, one of Yataro’s eyes turned partially red making it dichromatic. Each of the jewelry that were distributed to Adam, Fuyuha, and Mira had a small red orb embedded inside it. Yataro could feel the change in his eyes. He looked up at Ikazaki.

“What did you do?!” Yataro yelled.

“Simple, I granted all of you your powers that were signed and bound by the Contract of Miracles.” Ikazaki grinned. “It was what all of you wanted. You all did sign it on your own accords.” Sakaichi and Malina looked confused at what they witnessed.

Ikazaki pointed behind himself. Yataro followed his finger to where he pointed. Suddenly, a dark ball formed in the air. “What the heck?!” Mira screeched.

“That is the Calamities.”

The dark form transitioned into a humanoid with piercing blue eyes.

“That is one of the many forms it takes. This one is called the Doppel Calamity.”

Yataro felt tense. Even the others couldn’t believe this was all happening. Their world was changing in front of them. The world felt like it was warping. Ikazaki snapped his fingers and dark clouds shrouded the skies instantly.

Students around the field looked up. Students who were leaving the campus saw that there were no exits. And students inside the school could feel the atmosphere instantly change. Some started to scream as they couldn’t leave. The ones on the field turned their attention to the perimeters of the campus. A dark miasma started to form around their whole school. The six on the rooftop looked around in awe. The darkness around was absorbing their school.

The Doppel Calamity in front of them swiped at Yataro who barely dodged the attack by stepping back. Mira screamed at the top of her lungs. Adam felt overwhelmed and fell to his knees. Fuyuha was utterly confused and couldn’t move. Both Sakaichi and Malina ran inside the school building afraid of the events.

Yataro glared at the Calamity. It held no emotion to it, and moved without even trying. It swiped at Yataro and struck him in his face sending him back to the fence. Mira looked at the Calamity cautiously.

Suddenly, a voice rang inside each of the four.

Fight. With the powers of the Miracles granted to you, utilize what you were given!’

Yataro looked up and the red section of his dichromatic eyes glowed. “Come! Akaikiri Masamune!”

The Doppel Calamity retreated near the rooftop entrance and shaped a sword into its hand. Mira looked at it surprised at what it could do.

“Resonation…,” Yataro’s blade rang with a red aura that repeated in sequences. “Revered Destruction!” He tapped his blade and ran at the enemy. It rushed at Yataro in return and attempted to slash horizontally. However, Yataro hopped over the swipe and knocked the Calamity down. Afterwards, he struck around himself creating red sparks that cut the Calamity and sprung it upwards.

I have to fight too!’ Mira thought to herself. “Reveal to me! Raijin no Ten!” Knuckles wrapped themselves into Mira’s hands and she wielded them without thinking. “Aerobic Rush!” Mira smacked the Calamity in the air with her foot and reached the ground. Then, she jumped once more and uppercutted it. “Second Rush: Catalyst’s Sweep!” Mira switched herself around and kicked the dark form down to Yataro.

“My turn again huh?” Yataro breathed in slowly. “Resonation: Despair!” Yataro kicked the Doppel Calamity and slashed down slicing it in half. The Doppel Calamity then purged and vanished.

Yataro felt out of breath while Mira was kicking around in joy. “Wow, that was awesome!” Mira happily fistbumped herself.

He laughed at her and looked around for Fuyuha and Adam. However, in the midst of fighting, they both disappeared. It was only Mira and Yataro left on the rooftop. As he caught his breath, the two heard screams from below. They looked down from the edge of the rooftop behind a fence. Students were running left and right chased by monsters. It was the Calamity. They had to do something.

Running down two sets of stairs, they looked both ways of the hallway in search of Adam, Fuyuha, Sakaichi, and Malina. ‘Which way did they go?’ Yataro thought to himself.

“Maybe we should split up, Yataro,” Mira suggested.

“Absolutely not,” Yataro frowned. Without knowing which way the others went, the two pointed in one direction, the west halls of the campus. Walking to save their stamina, they noticed they didn’t run into any students. “Where did everyone go? We just saw them running from the rooftop.”

Mira shrugged. She looked out the windows and all she could see was darkness. Turning her attention in front of her, she saw she wasn’t following Yataro anymore. Blinking in a stupor, she called out to him. Mira felt her heartbeat as there wasn’t any other noise or reply. She lost sight of Yataro.

Meanwhile, Yataro kept walking without looking back. He reached an intersection. “Which way should we go?” He waited for an answer but received none. “Oi, Mira, which way-.” He turned to his back and saw that Mira was missing. Just a moment ago, they were together. But now, they had been separated. “No way!” Yataro looked back at the intersections of hallways. Dazed, Yataro took a random turn and kept walking. He stopped in front of his classroom. Curious about what was inside, he opened the sliding door.

Yataro took a light step inside and saw Malina in the corner. However, she was standing in the corner of the classroom on the other side facing the corner. Frightened at this moment, as it was very similar to many situations that he saw in horror movies, he took a step back trying to exit. The door had already closed on its own with a loud thump.

Malina heard the door closing and slowly turned around. “Who’s there…?” Malina looked back at Yataro with empty, cold eyes. “Why are you here…?” She muttered.

Yataro freaked out. “M-Malina! Are you okay?!” He backed himself into a corner as Malina eased herself closer. On her palm, Yataro caught sight of an insignia that started from the center of the palm and circled around its center twice before going down to her wrist. To him, it didn’t feel like the same Malina he knew.

She didn’t answer back to his question. Instead, she materialized a large battle axe and wielded it with both hands with ease. Her eyes, normally brown, glowed a grim blue. Malina leaped forward at Yataro and swung her large axe. Yataro, caught by surprised, was hit by the axe and flew out the door and window into the school track.

The ground shook heavily. Yataro winced at the pain as his stomach had a large gash. “Agh… crap!” Yataro squinted at the area from where he flew out from. He saw Malina standing from the broken opening of the school wall.

“Abide by the Laws of Darkness, you wretched fool,” Malina cackled. “Fade away!”
