Wysthae - An Adventurer's Archetype! [Written]

Draconus297

Recommended Posts

Essentially, an archetype based on adventure games, mostly LoZ and Metroid. We're focusing on one primary playmaker, their tools of the trade, and the bosses they fight . . . a monster-slayer of the highest caliber. Meet Wysthae.

So far, this archetype has cards from both myself, GarlandChaos, and MUDKIPISAWESOME!!!, but we're open to suggestions for new cards as long as they're in-theme.

[spoiler= Wysthae and Proxies]

Wysthae, the Silent Warrior [Draconus297]

LIGHT - Level 3 - Warrior/Effect - 1600/200

If your opponent controls a "Wysthae" monster, you can Special Summon this monster from your hand or Graveyard (you can only activate this effect of "Wysthae, the Silent Warrior" once per turn). If this monster battles a Level 6 or higher "Wysthae" monster, halve the ATK and DEF of the opposing monster. If this monster destroys your opponent's monster by battle, you can Special Summon 1 "Weapon of Wysthae" monster from your Graveyard.

Imposter Wysthae [Draconus297]

EARTH - Level 3 - Warrior/Effect - 1200/1200

This monster is treated as "Wysthae, the Silent Warrior" on the field and in the Graveyard. When this monster is Normal or Special Summoned, you can add 1 "Weapon of Wysthae" monster from your Deck to your hand, and if you do, send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard. When this monster attacks, it gains 1000 ATK until the end of the Damage Step. If this monster is used as Synchro Material during Main Phase 1 or the Battle Phase, you can Special Summon this monster from your Graveyard at the start of the 2nd Main Phase.

Dark Wysthae, the Shadow Self [GarlandChaos]

DARK - Level 3 - Warrior/Effect - 1600/200

This card's name becomes "Wysthae, the Silent Warrior" while it is on the field or in the Graveyard. If your opponent controls no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) to your opponent's side of the field in face-up Attack Position. If this card battles a "Wysthae" monster, its ATK and DEF become equal to that monster's until the end of the Damage Step. If this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: This card's owner can target 1 set Spell/Trap card their opponent controls; Destroy it, then set it in your Spell/Trap Card Zone. You can only use this effect of "Dark Wysthae, the Shadow Self" once per turn.

The Silent Warrior? - Wysthene [MUDKIPISAWESOME!!!, text corrected by Draconus297]

LIGHT - Level 2 - Warrior/Effect - 1500/300

This card is treated as a "Wysthae" monster for the effects of "Weapon of Wysthae" or "Armor of Wysthae" cards. This monster can be treated as Level 3 for the Summon of a Warrior-Type Synchro monster. If this monster battles an "Enemy of Wysthae" monster: Destroy the monster with this card's effect before damage calculation, also treat the monster as if it was destroyed by battle. At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card destroyed an opponent's monster with its own effect: You can Special Summon 1 "Armor of Wysthae" monster from your Graveyard, then, immediately after this effect resolves, you can; Xyz Summon one Xyz Monster from your Extra Deck, using only this card and the Summoned monster as Xyz Materials.

This is largely a work in progress, since there's so many inspirations we can take from the source material. Naturally, suggestions or contributions are welcome.

Oh, and if anyone could give a better name for the Trap Card I made, that would be great, please. Thanks in advance. :3

Okay, just so other card designers know this: the "Enemy of Wysthae" monsters are all based on LoZ or Metroid bosses.

Current ones:

Rampaging Flame Snake - Volvagia (Ocarina of Time)

Sky Terror Rydel - Ridley (almost every Metroid game)

Dessicated Terror Lormare - Nightmare (Fusion) + Stallord (Twilight Princess)

Ghostly Tyrant Phantora - Phantoon (Super Metroid) + Majora (Majora's Mask)

What about an enemy of Wysthae based on Legion from Castlevania Symphony of the Night?

It's an adventure game with lots of room fir creative inspiration, like a fusion that summons itself by contact fusing to the opponent's field and breaks into five weak tokens on destruction? He is legion for he is many.

I'd rename the Trap to "Wysthae Weapon Reforging" as that fits the flavor idea better.

Here's a card! I chose to add Rank in addition to Level, but you guys can remove it if you wish.

Based on Gohma and…I forget it's name, but the Spider from the Auxilary Power Core in Metroid Fusion. I know it has a name, but I forgot, so anyone who remembers is free to remind us all, and rename the Monster to fit both names too if they'd like, as it's just an anagram of Gohma right now. Also, I chose Arachness instead of Arachnid because…that's a great question, actually…I think I was planning on using Acid Arachness as an Archetype name later on, and this seemed like a fun Archetype fusion I guess.

Also seeing HERO decks using Lormare with Skyscraper - huzzah for HERO support!

Acid Arachness Hmaog, Enemy of Wysthae

Level 8 EARTH Insect-Type Effect Monster

You can tribute one Monster your opponent controls; Special Summon this card from your hand to your opponent's side of the Field, and if you do, the controller of this card takes 1000 damage during the End Phase if this card is still Face-Up on the Field. If this Monster is destroyed by battle with a Level/Rank 5 or lower Warrior-Type Monster: The controller of this card takes double battle damage from the next battle involving that Monster.

ATK/DEF 2600/1900

Thanks for the trap name idea, I'll make sure Draco sees it. :3

The name of the Spider from Fusion is Yakuza(Yes, like the Japanese mafia. Why? *shrugs*), so maybe Yaguuma for the portmanteau name?

Skyscraper isn't a super-good card, but that's a nice idea for a tech. Maybe. Depends on how much ATK their highest ATK Level 5 or lower has.

Thanks for the new monster card idea! We already have a boss monster from both Ocarina of Time and Fusion (Rampaging Flame Snake is Volvagia and Lormare is a mix between Nightmare and Stallord from Twilight Princess), but I'll see what Draco thinks.

Okay, added another Enemy, another Weapon, a Field Spell, and renamed Wysthae Item Recycling as per MUDKIPISAWESOME's suggestion.

Thargoh, the new Enemy, is based on Gohdan from Wind Waker and Thardus from Prime 1.

Yaguuma won't be added for the moment, as we're trying not to use repeat games.

LoZ games put to use:

Ocarina of Time

Majora's Mask

Wind Waker

Twilight Princess

Metroid games put to use:

Super

Fusion

Prime

The current highest Level 5- HERO, not counting Fusions, is Captain Gold at 2100 but needs Skyscraper to remain out. Next highest is Stratos at 1800 Prisma at 1700. Alternatively, use Gaia and Level Eater to bring Gaia down to 5, then just swing over whichever you choose thanks to Gaia's effect. This is essentially a slightly-more-specific set of Kaijus, and I'm loving it!

I'd like to point out that you're gonna run out of decent uber Metroid bosses fairly fast if you intend to not repeat games, but as a suggestion for you guys, that one giant quadruped robot from Prime 2. I'm also wondering if the two that change name are based off of the SA-X and Dark Link/Samus respectively, as they seem to fit into that design.

Actually, Neos Alius, at 1900, is the second strongest. A lot of people forget about him.

Good eye. Yes, they do! SA-X is an "imposter Samus", and Dark Wysthae is indeed Wysthae's own shadow equivalent, just like Dark Link/Samus. Other Wysthae proxies would likely reference Hunters in Metroid, or the Four Sword/Linkle/The Hero's Shade/Future Link for LoZ.

Yeah. However, it's mostly so that the entire archetype isn't boss monsters, especially given that our Ganon/Mother Brain still isn't done (although we know it'll be a Level 10 with 4800 ATK).

Bump because Water Armor has been added, and I've changed my mind regarding Yaguuma, both because Gohma has appeared in multiple LoZ games and because Metroid Fusion needs more love.

Also, I'd like to comment on the fact that with this lineup of bosses, and these options for combat, a Wysthae video game sounds stupid fun.

Hey, here's a Linkle-style one because I've been playing Hyrule Warriors Legends for a couple days now(totally forgot about how hilarious Ganondorf is, btw…DON'T MESS WITH THE MANE!). Not exactly the same as the 'proxies' but I think it fits a Linkle-style position in the 'story' of Wysthae. Don't know if Wysthae was intended to be male or female because Link is M but Samus is F, plus there's the Hunters, so perhaps genderless would be best, but anyways, the name is a little tentative, and I'm not sure how to word the beginning part of the effect so if someone knows do fix that. Also made this Level 2 to use Xyz Summon with Weapons/Armor instead of Synchro to help emphasize the difference between the two characters, but by all means change it to 3 and switch the effect if that seems like a better idea. I've also not worded it "1 'Wysthene' Xyz Monster" because I want to see if you guys like the idea - if anyone wants there to be more Wysthene cards, it will need to be changed to specifically state that you must summon a "Wysthene" Xyz Monster.

Also, heck to the yes for a Wysthae VG, someone find an experienced ROM hacker and get them to work on that, I wanna see how you'd fight the Stallord/Nightmare mashup - riding along the wall while something flies just ahead and shoots lasers at you or something. Also, let's get someone working on finding good art for these cards at some point because this stuff could look epic.

The Silent Warrior? - Wysthene

Level 2 LIGHT Warrior-Type Effect Monster

This card is always treated as a correct equip target for any "Weapon of Wysthae" or "Armor of Wysthae" card. If this monster battles an "Enemy of Wysthae" monster: Destroy the monster with this card's effect before damage calculation, also treat the monster as if it was destroyed by battle. At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card destroyed an opponent's monster with its own effect: You can Special Summon 1 "Armor of Wysthae" monster from your Graveyard, then, immediately after this effect resolves, Xyz Summon one Xyz Monster from your Extra Deck, using only this card and the summoned monster.

ATK/DEF 1500/300

I would also suggest renaming the Armor cards to Lava and Freeze Armor respectively, tying in to the two main hazard areas in Metroid along with hopefully the Goron and Zora domains, which I assume are what they're based on.

Hmm. I'll try to find the ideal wording for Wysthene's effect, but maybe to tie into the fact that Linkle is technically supposed to be Link, albeit an alternative feminine one, perhaps Wysthene can be treated as Level 3 for a Synchro Summon, on top of the Rank 2 Xyz suggestion?

I even have a way said Rank 2 could tie into the Enemy mechanic- "If this monster battles, it is treated as a Level 0 monster until the end of the Damage Step."

Also, if someone manages to ROMhack a 3D adventure game, I have some ideas for how some bosses would work, given the almost Magitek blend Wysthae would entail:

Lormare - think the Stallord fight, but with Nightmare's weird ability to screw with gravity. Trying to fight sideways, upside down, and even occasionally with the hazard of being pulled closer to a mechanical-armored skeletal dragon. You'd basically juggle fighting Lormare with using the Grapple Weapon to try to right yourself. Like, actively using your Hookshot/Grapple Beam to jump tracks so you don't fall to your death or get eaten. Hectic and requiring a lot of multitasking.

Phantora - combine Majora's Wrath with Phantoon's projectiles and ability to teleport, plus the erratic shifts in movement and attack speed Majora displays in the Mask section of her fight. A teleporting, erratic foe that can electro-whip you and shoot energy balls, who you'd probably fight with ranged weapons of your own, or use some way to stun her long enough to get hits in (likely the Frost Weapon, from what we have already, or a future electricity-based attack we may add into the Weapons).

Dark Wysthae - Think Dark Link/Samus, but led up to in the manner of SA-X (Imposter Wysthae only really exists as its own entity because YGO). You spend its entire area of the game trying not to die because it has everything you do, plus the dungeon item that it can use to kill you in one hit (likely the Demolition Weapon, which is BOMBS). Then you get that item and seek DW out- one-on-one battle as equals, swords, laser blasts, use of every different item you have up to that point on both sides . . . more a contest of wits and wills than your typical "find its weakness" boss fight.

Maga Braorf - I see this being a two-stage fight: one in the "Ganondorf" stage, playing tennis with the boss while needing to cycle between your weapons to use each one effectively in the fight (likely using a Skyward Sword-inspired easy weapon switch system), redirecting this monstrosity's own attacks at them as they carry themselves with smug villainy and slowly get more and more frustrated with their inability to kill you, eventually reaching an epic sword/laser battle in the tradition of fighting Ganondorf in direct sword combat from Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. Then, in the second "Ganon/Mother Brain" stage, mitts come off and you get challenged by this beam-flinging, magic-slinging, colossal monstrosity that forces you to fight with everything you've got (including our equivalent to the Charge Beam/Light Arrows if and when we ever make one- Fire Weapon is Missiles/Fire Arrows[or the Fire Rod, if you prefer], Frost is Ice Beam/Arrows/Rod). It's essentially an exam boss mixed in with just a genuinely challenging fight.

Also, yes. Water Armor, as per its original name, was based on the Blue Tunic/Zora Armor/Gravity Suit, which all help in getting through water-based areas. The Fire Armor was based on the Red Tunic/Goron Tunic/(. . . I forgot the name of the upgrade that lets you walk through hot areas in Metroid, for shame!). Lava Armor makes sense, then, so I'll make that change, but Freeze Armor . . . doesn't.

The suit that allows extreme temperature exploration is the Varia Suit, and I chose Freeze because without the Varia Suit Samus also takes damage while in sub-zero environments in addition to extreme heat, but yeah, Freeze Armor's not the smoothest name.

Lormare alone makes me want to watch how a hack would play out so bad, but for goodness sake whoever does end up finding someone for this had better give Dark Wysthae a decent AI because the SA-X was brain-dead half the game - I jumped a wall and you can clearly see where I could jump over, but I'm not directly in your line of sight so I guess you'd better give up? Not cool…although maybe the SA-X forgot to copy the ability that allows you to grab onto ledges, so that might have explained that particular anomaly. As for Maga Braof, it's starting to sound like a Megaman final boss fight, and those always get me excited, so that should be fun to see. Rydel, though, might be a bit disappointing because he brings nothing Zelda to the table - it's literally just Ridley. Perhaps come up with a LoZ boss you could mix with him? Something unexpected, like Manhandla? I'm not super familiar with Zelda games so I don't know who might still be available for usage.

That's what I get for shameless copy/paste. Thanks for catching that.

I would suggest Grhydel for the name, but that just sounds too much like Ghirardelli in my head for me not to get hungry and think of chocolate. Plus, it's Garland's monster, so it's ultimately his decision.

Also, here's an idea I had for a Thargoh fight-

A dark area of the game, the resident Water Temple, and you finally get into a well-lit area: Think a cross between a Zen garden and one of those high-profile offices with waterfalls on the walls. Suddenly, the rocks on the floor tumble together into a huge golem that smacks you with its massive hands, uses the water in the room as an attack (both in liquid and ice forms), uses its body rocks as projectiles that eventually roll back into it, et cetera . . . and it essentially boils down to a Boolossus-esque fight, trying to break it down into dust that gets drained out of the room, bit by bit.
