Contests can be some of the most fun in terms of card creation. The prompts stretch creativity and allow creators to work within limits and come up with new ideas and go outside their comfort zone. I plan on hosting a contest now every so often, hopefully as often as possible without them being stale so long as people enjoy them, so let's kick things off.

THEME

Create a card that looks like it would be the ace monster used by the main rival character in a YGO anime/spinoff!
Specifics: This is typically scene as a Level 8 monster with 3000 ATK and 2000-2500 DEF, typically LIGHT or DARK attribute. Look for ideas on who this character may be and how this monster fits them as their ace.

 

 

Entry Requirements and Fee: Anyone may join for free!

 

Prizes: A special badge for your profile or signature that will showcase your place and your card (for top 3 submissions)

 

Criteria: Entries will be judged on the following scoring:

  • Balance: /35 - Is there a good balance of investment vs. gain? Risk vs. reward? Is it fair, or not?
  • Creativity: /35 - Does this card take an interesting angle on mechanics? Does it promote creative play, or is its uses rigid and set?
  • Flavor: /25 - Do the card's mechanics match what the card's theme and design is? Does it play with lore and creative design?
  • Grammar: /5 - Did you write gud? (I will be very lax in this; so long as you don't screw it up totally you should be fine)

Deadlines: Deadlines for entering will be Saturday, March 18th at 11:59 PM PDT. Deadline for card entries will be One week after, sooner if all cards are submitted.

 

Rules:

All submissions must work under existing Yugioh game mechanics. No custom types, sub-types, attributes, card-types, etc. Link monsters are allowed. All YCM section and forum rules apply.

 

Judging: If you are interested in judging, please post here with your criteria. I reserve the right to turn down anyone for whatever reason.

 

 

If you're down to clown, post your intent to entry! Again,  you can enter until the 18th at 11:59 PDT, and then you are given a week to post your card entries. If you have any questions, feel free to post.

Thanks for asking! Written cards are allowed and I will make a good effort to grade them at the same level as created cards. In the case of Link monsters you may provide the art separately.

 

The only advantage art may give is make flavor/theme easier to understand, which may contribute to a better score in the respective area. I will do my best to avoid that happening, but it can happen.

Lore: You can send 1 face-up Continuous Trap Card you control to the Graveyard to Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon "Des Prison Armor" once per turn this way. During either player's turn: You can target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its effects are negated, its ATK and DEF become 0, and it cannot change its battle position. You can only target 1 monster at a time with this effect. You can only use this effect of "Des Prison Armor" once per turn.

 

 

 

[spoiler=Some Brief Flavor for the Rival]

The rival is a loosely Judge Dredd-inspired individual, i.e. A man under the impression that he is the embodiment of law and order, and anyone he doesn't hold in high regard/deems inferior to him is Trouble with a capital T. His general motif is discipline/punishment, with heavy themes of imprisonment and law enforcement.

You can Ritual Summon this card with "Infernescent Ignition". Must be Ritual Summoned without using "Infernescent Conflagrim", and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. When you inflict damage to your opponent with a card effect: Target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy it, and if you do, monsters you control gain 200 ATK. You can only use the effect of "Infernescent Conflagrim" up to thrice per turn.

 

This card can be used to Ritual Summon any "Infernescent" Ritual Monster. Banish monsters from your field or Graveyard, then Ritual Summon 1 "Infernescent" Ritual Monster from your hand or that is banished, whose Level exactly equals the total levels of those monsters. When you inflict damage to your opponent with a card effect, if this card is in your Graveyard: Return this card to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Infernescent Ignition" once per turn.

While your opponent controls a monster in their Extra Monster Zone, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by Tributing 1 monster you control. During either player's turn: You can destroy 1 card on the field, and if you do, destroy all cards on the field that were Linked to it, then inflict 500 damage to your opponent for each card destroyed. You can only use the effect of "De-linker Nightmare" once while it is face-up on the field.

All right, here's my entry. I was thinking something on the lines of anti-Link Monster decks that potentially also utilize Link Monsters. I can also see this going well with something like a Goyo or Graydle deck, assuming you're facing an opponent who uses Link Monsters, so I guess the rival I'm imagining would somehow be able to claim his opponent's Link Monsters and Synchro Summon using them.

And yes, I know that I just said he'd use Link Monsters to Synchro Summon. Don't you just love card effects that manipulate the rules sometimes?

When Synchro Summoning this card, you can treat the Link Monsters' Link Numbers as Levels. Once per turn, when your opponent Link Summons a monster, you can target that monster: Destroy it, and if you do, this card gains 500 ATK until the End Phase. If this card is in face-up Defense Position: Destroy this card.

 
[spoiler=Card Effects Explained]Link Destroyer's first effect is obviously just how to Synchro Summon it. Its second effect is an anti-Link Monster effect so he can counter whatever Yusako tries to do with Link Monsters. The final effect is almost an imitation of how Link Monsters can't be in Defense Position. However, it can still be put into face-down Defense Position with cards like Book of Moon, since I don't want it to be too much like a Link Monster. (I guess Earthquake would demolish this card if you didn't have something to keep it safe, but I'm assuming there would be some support for Link Destroyer or just general support that would prevent this card's battle position from being switched.)

When a Synchro Monster is Special Summoned from the Extra Deck: You can banish up to 2 cards from either player's Graveyard. You can target 3 banished monsters, including at least 1 Tuner monster; return them to the Graveyard, and if you do, you can Special Summon this card from your Pendulum Zone. You can only use each Pendulum Effect of "Sterlingflame Dragon" once per turn.

When this card is Special Summoned from the Extra Deck: You can banish 1 card from your hand; banish up to 1 card each from the field and Graveyard. Banish any monster destroyed by battle with this card. If this card in the Monster Zone leaves the field by a card effect: You can place it in your Pendulum Zone.
