Migration

At this point, it has been said over and over that YCM's current leader is effectively MIA.  I've also heard it mentioned that the only reason the site is still up is because it is still generating money for the owner.  Here is my suggestion.  We migrate.

I would offer to do it myself, but I have extremely limited coding knowledge in HTML, so I can't do it.

However, if someone with enough coding knowledge were able to make a new forum with at least the same capabilities as this website and the willingness to update it, we would be golden.  Basically, someone needs to recreate or duplicate YCM in a new website, like YCM2.0 or something and start working on updating the card maker.  You could even transfer points by working with the existing mods here and any new mods on the new site.

At this point, even the card maker is breaking down.  I don't know if I'm the only one, but when I generate cards, not only can I no longer upload them to imgur, but they don't look right.  If someone makes a new site, maybe they could create a system where they can easily add new card formats rather than constantly modifying the existing one (which is how YCM's card maker works as I understand).

The major positives of this are:

1. We might actually get Pendulums and Links.

2. We can easily get new members again, since they will see YCM working.

3. The new owner will get the money, so a positive for him/her.

4. A new site means a new forum without the deadweight of all the ghost/dead accounts around here making the forum look like a zombie.

Everyone has the issue with the cardmaker; not just you. At the present time, most people just use TCGEditor; yes, it requires you to download it (but 12 MB shouldn't be too much unless you burned out your space with videos or something and/or have a small drive).

The idea of moving over to a new site was brought up in October (in passing) when the last major downtime came about, but other members said it was a bad idea. One idea would be to start off on something like IcyBoards, then MAYBE work our way to getting our own host/domain and stuff. Issues concerning this:

  • MyBB server, so you will not have the option of changing your display name. (Name changes are possible, but whatever you change your name to is what you use to log in)
  • Giving likes is a much more tedious process (well, you actually have to write stuff out)
  • Warn system works differently (and is percentage based)
  • Cannot add the cardmaker right away (but TCGEditor exists right now)
  • Are people even going to come on? Nowadays, a lot of discussion has shifted to Discord (as much as a spamhole that's become nowadays)

====

That being said, some of you probably heard about Tormey wanting to buy YCM, but the idea never went through.

Producing a server would not be an issue, there would be two options (that do not involve the IcyBoards setup).

  1. Purchasing a Server sub from Ip.Boards
  2. Purchasing a client-based sub service, which would be ran on a local server (which I can facilitate)

The whole purchasing lark didn't go through based on the fact that YCMaker did not want to sell the site not that it didn't go through per se, the only issue we would face would be site commitment and user-base. Making a site that would gain enough traffic and actually be a site that can be found easily, what I mean by this is that whenever you search for Yugioh Card Maker or "make yugioh cards" this site is always the first, if anyone is actually interested in my inputs on this topic-I am more than willing to go into detail but the base of it is.

The cost outweighs the potential positives.

The initial costs outweigh the initial positives, but as people see that the new site is more active than the old, we will likely get new members and the positive will hopefully outway the initial cost, and the new YCM will eventually rise next to or above the original YCM as the activity increases while the other decreases.  The most difficult part is the old members from here, if they don't migrate, then it won't work.

We have been sitting on our butts moaning about how bad YCM currently is, but if we don't do something, than we deserve to go extinct.  As an old member, I wanna migrate to try to keep this alive, but if we don't do anything, as a realistic person, my reason for staying melts at an alarming rate.  I mean look, Dova and I, and many other people vanished for months at a time after pendulums came out and it was clear YCM wasn't going to update, many of whom never came back.  It's a vicious cycle, people quit and then we get less people doing stuff on the site, less people doing stuff on the site and then new members are deterred and old members quit, people quit and then we get less... you get the point.

Fun Fact, this site has 40k pages of members, 20 people per page means we have 800k members registered, but we usually have about 50 members online at once.

another issue being

none of us know how to code a card maker lmao

You would honestly be surprised. At least in my day, finding codemonkeys in various fields of expertise on this site was little more than caring and talking to people. Typically those people are rare posters though but they are around.
