Do you like the new LINK-Monsters?

Here you can discuss about Link-Monsters.

I personally don´t like them because it blocks so many decks which base on XYZ-/Fusion-/Synchrosummonings. OK Konami had to make something new but they shouldn´t destroy so many decks, just to bring out a new summoning. Also it supports the Monarch-archetype which is strong enouth.

I don´t like them.

I do. They are like Synchros, but with the flexibility of Xyzs so they will trigger some floating effects here and there that Xyzs cannot; also they make Tokens more relevant.

Then the new rulings on Extra Deck monsters contribute to holding back all those often overwhelming decks that spam Extra Deck monsters. It is a shame that it also hurts less potent decks that rely on these mechanics, but hopefully they will adapt, or any upcoming Link Monster toys will help them to keep up their game.

Also, hail the True Draco new meta :v

Well, it's a mixed bag.

I wouldn't mind Links as much if they didn't explicitly require you to run them just to access your Extra Deck stuff (and they know full well how heavy they made the Extra Deck focus for the past decade [well, give/take a year]; 5Ds and onwards). If they designed them in a way that didn't require them to reformat how the field had been set up since the DM era (bar the addition of Pendulums, but I don't consider that to be a major change), then maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Granted, I did make that "Create a Link Monster" game for members to somewhat get used to them / design stuff (and I have made a few of them myself; might post a couple later, or least the stuff I made here). Right now, not really keen on them, but will have to adapt because the game is advancing (and part of my job as CC mod is to be able to distinguish between good/bad design, and that requires knowing how Links affect stuff). Starting to get used to how they work, but playtesting will be difficult because lack of access to updated YGOPro (not using DuelingBook because of its own issues) and DP is on hold for a good while.

Honestly speaking, I think Konami should've abstained from making a new summon mechanic and just focus on rebalancing the existing stuff they already put out.

That being said, CC does have an option for you to design with the ARC-V format in mind, in the event you don't like Links (and a lot of us expressed discontent at them once revealed).

There are a few things I dislike about them and basically nothing I do like about them.

  1. I dislike how it makes the Column mechanic mainstream, because my current gamemat doesn't have the Zones labelled and I do not want to get a new one.
  2. Increased complexity. I enjoy playing casually with new and returning players and the Extra Monster Zone and Link Monsters are just more things I have to tell them about. And because of its big effect on Fusion, Synchro Xyz and Pendulum, I have to teach them about the Extra Monster Zone (and possibly Links) before the others.
  3. Link monsters are just kind of boring. It's literally just Synchros (or certain Contact Fusions), but trades individual strength for being easier to summon and having Link Markers.
  4. The Extra Monster Zone weakens some of my old decks :(
  5. THEY'RE LITERALLY THE EXACT SAME COLOUR AS RITUALS, JUST WITH HEXAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is my second largest gripe about them. rituals have enough difficulty standing out without broken mechanics and ritual beasts stealing the name despite being fusions, now they don't even get a unique color.

i don't mind the slowing to the ED, i can think of ways around that (outside of quasar.deck,) and i believe that in the future, konami will bring more link monsters to the table that will act as legacy support for older ED based archetypes. what i do mind, is not increasing the ED size, even though they've created yet another ED monster. many decks already have an insanely tight ED, why konami felt the need to add another ED monster type, without giving us even one more ED slot, is beyond me.

my largest gripe though, is with something that has not happened yet, but i know will happen sometime down the line, because it always happens. and that is, that konami will do something stupid, and end up breaking link monsters. i don't know how, and i don't know when, but it will happen, that much i'm very sure of.
