Recommended Posts

It's been over ten years since I've been in the game and everything is so different now, I spent a few hours building this deck but every one that sees it laughs it off. Is please give me some advice on bettering it. I also don't hate a side deck but would like to start one.

1 Magician of Black Chaos

1 Dark paladin

3 Dark Magician

2 buster blader

2 Dark Magician Girl

1 Magicians valkyria

1 Dark valkyria

1 Skilled white magician

1 Skilled Dark Magician

1 Blast magician

1 Big Shield gardna

2 Marshmallon

3 Miscellaneousaurus

[spell cards]

2 dedication through light and darkness

2 Polymerization

1 Dark burning Magic

1 Black Magic Ritual

1 Dark magic curtain

1 Pot of duality

1 Thousand knives

1 Swords of Revealing Light

[Trap cards]

2 Mirror Force

2 Magic cylinder

2 Magician's Circle

I feel that it flows pretty well but I might just be excited to build a deck for the first time in years lol. Thanks for your time and help in advance everyone.

Problem with your Deck is that you're using really old cards that don't really flow together. Dark Magician did get a bunch of new toys in The Dark Illusion (albeit a few of them are a bit pricey). I'm going to assume that budget isn't an issue for right now, and your focus is on Dark Magician being viable.

Stuff to remove (definite)

  • Buster Blader (he has his own Deck / supports, but not here)
  • Skilled White Magician
  • Miscellaneosaurus (uh, why is this in here? Not seeing any cards that can benefit from it.)
  • Big Shield Gardna / Marshmallon
  • Dark Valkyria (yeah, it's another target for Magician's Circle, but you'd want to summon DMG's retrain instead)
  • Blast Magician
  • Magician of Black Chaos (run his Effect retrain instead; he's infinitely better, bar the forced banish if he leaves the field [also doesn't take up 2 slots in your Deck; self and Ritual Spell])
  • Dedication through Light and Darkness (right now, you can't use this b/c OG Magician of Black Chaos =/= DMoC, but even then, not really worth it.)
  • Thousand Knives (it got a little better with the supports, but not advising that you run this)
  • Swords of Revealing Light (would probably side this at best)
  • Gravity Bind (Xyz exist, so this has less potency than it did in the past)
  • Spellbinding Circle / Metal Reflect Slime (latter has no point in here, and Spellbinding Circle has its uses, but just isn't as good)
  • Magic Cylinder

Additions (mostly the TDIL supports he got)

  • Magician of Black Illusion (think of him as Dark Magician #4-6, well, because his name is treated as such on the field/Graveyard)
  • Palladium Oracle Mahad (free summon if you draw him outside turn 1, doubles ATK against DARK monsters and floats into Dark Magician when he dies)
  • Magician's Robe (this gets you a free Dark Magician if you can discard stuff)
  • Dark Magic Circle (seriously, run this because searcher for the new supports AND banishes stuff when you summon)
  • Dark Magic Expanded
  • More Dark Magic Curtain (max this one out because getting Dark Magician out is key)
  • Eternal Soul (revival card and protects you from getting sniped by effect removal)
  • Ebon High Magician (lets you trigger your S/T from hand by detaching an Xyz Material)
  • Ebon Illusion Magician (SS Dark Magician again, and banishes stuff whenever DM attacks)
  • Apprentice Illusion Magician (free summon from hand w/discard, also a Honest/Kalut for the Deck)

Going off what Sonic noted above, OG Mirror Force isn't really great; if you must run a Mirror Force, use Quaking (that one stops the opponent from using them for ED fodder or attacking again). Strike and Barrier negate or prevent certain Decks from summoning particular monsters (however both of these are really expensive at the moment). Allure works if you have dead Magicians in hand.

I would also change Polymerization for The Eye of Timaeus, then swap out Paladin for Amulet Dragon (though you can probably run both if you want, since it can Fusion Summon only using Dark Magician on the field [no need for Buster Blader]). Also Rank 4 and 7 support cards.

Some of the other cards I didn't address are either things you can keep or iffy (I would remove Dark Magician Girl and replace her with the counterpart).

=====

As I said at the beginning of this post, a lot of the cards here are likely very expensive and out of your budget range. I don't know if you want this for casual play or to be competitively viable; suggestions above are for competitive purposes (using online due to budget being an nonexistent issue). At the time of writing, I think most of the support cards are out (Apprentice Illusion is still Japan-only right now, so scratch that. I guess you can keep Dark Magician Girl for now, but once Apprentice arrives, switch them).

If this is a casual build, some of the cards I recommended taking out can stay, but a few others definitely need to go.

Wouldn't Storming Mirror Force be better than Quaking? Actually, maybe Floodgate Trap Hole instead would work better since it's not battle dependent. There's also Raigeki, Soul Charge, Left Arm Offering, etc..

You can try either way; my personal preference is keeping monsters neutered on the field instead of having them returned to the hand. But yeah, Floodgate Trap Hole is a better idea than Quaking for the most part on further inspection. (Suppose whatever the TC can afford at the time will have to do, if this is casual and for friendly matches and all).

That being said, if he does have a budget and/or is more concerned with just making it function correctly, some of the suggestions will have to be revised accordingly.

(I didn't mention Magician's Rod in the previous post; just use it to grab the support cards, but the other effect is iffy). I would've said Magi Magi as an option considering the Apprentice Illusions (and can be Ranked-Up into Ebon), but think that too is OCG-only.

Magician's Rod is also good (Searches anything with the card "Dark Magician" in it's effect text).

You can also use a Rank 4 engine with Summoner Monk and a couple Level 4s.  Kycoo and Chocolate Magician Girl are good choices.  And even though it's Limited, Maxx "C" is always a good idea.

As far as other spells, Secret Village is good.  Illusion Magic can search up to 2 DMs.  Allure of Darkness and Pot of Duality can search stuff even faster.  Board wipers such as Raigeki, Dark Hole and/or Torrential Tribute are always decent.

Here's a deck list I threw together real fast so you know what to get for it.

[spoiler=Dark Magician Sample Deck]

Monsters: 15

3 DM

3 Magician of Dark Illusion

3 Magician's Rod

1 Magician's Robe

2 Summoner Monk

2 Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer

1 Maxx "C"

Spells: 15

3 Dark Magical Circle

3 Pot of Duality

2 Allure of Darkness

2 Twin Twisters

1 Dark Magic Attack

1 Dark Magic Inheritance

1 Illusion Magic

1 Raigeki

1 Soul Charge

Traps: 10

3 Eternal Soul

3 Magician's Navigation

2 Dark Renewal

1 Torrential Tribute

1 Solemn Warning

Extra Deck:15

2 Ebon High Magician

2 Ebon Illusion Magician

1 Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon

1 Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack

1 Number 11: Big Eye

8 any generic Rank 4s you can get your hands on.

Everything save Dark Magical Circles and Navigations (each is $30 a piece) aren't too pricey.  You can try it out on Dueling Book or Devpro and tweak it to see what works.
