MACR-EN087 SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort
Level 4 EARTH Machine-Type Effect Monster
ATK 1000
DEF 1000
You can target 1 “SPYRAL” monster you control; equip this monster from your hand or field to that target. While this card is equipped to a monster by this effect, the equipped monster cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects, also your opponent cannot target it with card effects. Once per turn, if this card is equipped to a monster by this effect: You can send 1 other card you control to the Graveyard; the equipped monster can attack directly this turn.

You can equip this to Sleeper so Sleeper can target itself so you don't have to destroy anything from your own while keeping pressure on your opponent.

Fancy that, Spyrals actually have a win condition now

Just for the record theres nothing stopping you from targeting the equip itself, so in that sense you are just describing that it's a face-up SPYRAL name for sleeper which really doesnt stand out much.

IF anything, it's a monster you can search off Quickfix I guess?

And then next turn, Sleeper can target itself again? And the turn after that?

This is more than an extra name

2 Daily Reminders this time

1. That protection is overrated

2. Sleeper is already arguably your main win condition. In that sense, this card's interaction with Sleeper is better categorized as "winmoar", as most Purely Protection Cards generally are.

Spygal is the only other card worth equipping (maybe Master Plan if any of the new stuff gives a way to actually summon her?) and Spygal obviously can't be equipped. Equipping Tough could give some Really Slow© value, I suppose.

As mentioned, main value I'd assign it is level 4 monster that can be searched off Qotacon. Incidentally, Qotacon himself gives you Slepper fodder anyways.

I like it, because I really like direct attack effects. Something you can't get over? Just go around it! It's why I run 2 Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf in my roid deck.

Plus, this gives the equipped monster protection which is neato, especially if you need to hit them over multiple turns. Itself can be protected from most removal by the Field Spell.

I would run it... if I played SPYRALS.

For sure though I think it should have been a LIGHT Union.

Why do you keep saying that protection is overrated? Protection is part of why Master Peace is good. If you equip Sleeper with this, you have a mock-up Master Peace that pops 2 instead of 1. Could be a decent rouge tear.

No one would be using that phrase with respect to Master Peace. It would make sense to use it to describe Dozen Metatron since it's literally just a lump vanilla and does nothing but reduce the number of outs vs it. Master Peace also isn't investing additional cards for its protection (read: Sleeper + Spyral Gear) as it's protection is embedded within the effect and it comes with a quick pop which would be considered more threatening as even more outs to the card have been reduced.

Sleeper also has a quick (double!) pop. The fact that getting the protection requires equipping it with Last Resort undeniably makes Sleeper worse, but this card is highly searchable by both the field spell and QuikFix and puts in a lot of work in certain situations.

I personally wouldn't build Spyrals, but if I did build Spyrals, I would test 1 copy of this. And if it was too useless most of the time, I would consider side decking it against decks that have difficulty dealing with Majespecters.

No one is saying to run 0 copies. So that's besides the point. And imo its likely if you were to play more than 1 copy its because of something else waaaay more important than protection (requiring an ignition effect to resolve after a summon is another thing to consider).

You also missed the fact that I mentioned that MP's protection is embedded within the effect and does not require an additional card. I only mentioned the quick pop n order to show you that its better than Data Metatron because it doesn't just sit there. This has nothing to do with whether Sleeper is worse in comparison to Master Peace (an arbitrary comparison) but rather to show you that it isnt even the same scenario to begin with so its not really a comparison.

Because protection IS overrated. Protection is best seen as a secondary effect that only becomes good when the monster/card it's attached to already has another great main effect. Dark Destroyer's targeting protection is neat and all but becomes important mainly in context of being pseudo-Quick Pop that is also the best tutor for the rest of your deck.

Cards that ONLY exist to grant protection, such as Bubble Barrier, are doomed to fail. This card may succeed due to finding a niche as a Quik-fix searchable level 4 Machine, though at current time I'm not sure what that would be relevant for.

Also rando note but someone reminded me of a gripe I have with cards like this

Why can't it be a Union

For funk's sake a Union that can equip from hand pretty good place to start to update Union structure
