[MTG] Iconic Masters

Straight from the mothership, comes out in November.

I'm all for reprints of old cards but the fact that Wizards is putting out these Masters sets every year (and now two in one year) is leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

They stopped core sets in favor of shorter expansion cycles. Which put another strain on the reprint problems since core sets were a place to reprint powerful cards that would otherwise not fit into the lore of the current expansion. Now Masters sets are the place for powerful reprints but at a premium price. In essence Wizards has replaced core sets with "Premium" core sets at twice the cost to the consumer. Ok. Rant over.

Dragon's, Sphinxes, and angels or some sheet is the selling point. Hopefully they deliver and give us some hard to find cards instead of a bunch of dollar rares with some chase mythics as fillers like MMA2.

expect no actual good reprints because of everyone's favourite reserved list

This is an exact quote of my reaction when I saw the announcement at my LGS.

"The way I see it, there's no point in having an 'Iconic Masters' while the reserved list exists."

That isn't to say a set called Iconic Masters must contain the Power Nine because they're iconic, but there are a lot of cards on the reserved list that are iconic that aren't those and ABUR Duals. There's stuff on the reserved list that is actually junk.

And while I disagree with the reserved list in every conceivable way, right now I'm not even arguing with doing it away. I'm just saying that a set should not be called Iconic Masters if the most Iconic cards in the game, without discussion, cannot and will not be included.

This isn't really true though. Anything reprinted in a core set would need to be something they'd be happy having in standard. That limits a TON of the powerful cards from showing up. Even stuff like Thoughtseize, Mutavault, and maybe even the fetchlands are looked on as having been mistakes to reprint. I think the number of cards that both are safe to reprint in standard and could only be reprinted through a core set is actually a pretty small group of cards.

This is an honest question though. Do you think WotC would even reprint stuff like the Power 9 and the Duel Lands? If they did what the hell kind of MSRP would a product with them even have? Its nice to dream about a world where those things are reprinted, but putting that into practice is exceptionally messy.

As we've seen they have tons of iconic things perfectly reprintable without running into conflict with the reserved list. The master series have proven that. Honestly, I'm just curious how much space these kind of products actually have without being too derivative. Though the iconic bit and this being a set focusing on dragons and what not suggests this is "iconic" in the sense of the color iconics.

Probably the msrp for any of their premium sets. Wotc doesn't make any money from the secondhand market, most of their money comes through selling sealed product.

By premium do you mean From the Vault? Because that only has an MSRP of like $35 and thats about the most expensive regular product they make. They wouldn't make a booster product for that price and a sealed product with the P9 would go for WAY more than that. And while WotC doesn't profit off the second market they do take some consideration of it into affect. They could very easily print more of any of the master series stuff if they wanted to.

I mean the 10$ master packs "premium" and yea, they do take the second market into affect (thus the reserved list) and the fact that they don't just flood the market with cards people want.

I doubt they ever would print Power 9 or ABUR Duals, certainly not in any main set, and probably not in premium sets either for that reason, no, but as I said, the reserved list contains more than just them, and I'd rather they have the option to reprint them (possibly as prize cards or judge promos) along with the rest of the list that could reasonably be reprinted in such sets, than to not be able to reprint any of them as a result of a policy that is somewhat nonsensical.

I think a product that contained the P9 would have an MSRP higher than the normal master series sets.

O, I am by no means defending the reserved list. Even at WotC I imagine the people that defend it are a minority. I was just point out you still have tons of iconic cards that exist outside of it.

Also, I misread what you wrote and thought you wanted the P9 and Duels reprinted.

Also, you know they could totally pull a Zendikar Priceless Treasures and just put this old cards into packs. I mean, they've done it before...

Not Reserved list cards. They used to be allowed to reprint then as premium cards, but they changed the policy way back so any version of a reserved lost card that could be played with cannot be printed, so Oversized cards or uncut sheets are the only exception.

they have taken cards off the list before. I doubt they'll do it again but it had happened.

There's only ever been two instances where cards were taken off of the RL:

1) Commons and uncommons from ABU which were previously on the list (including Clone, Demonic Tutor and Sinkhole, among others) were taken off in March 2002, due to overwhelming public support for the proposed change.

2) Feroz's Ban (originally printed in Homelands) was on the list at first, but got mistakenly reprinted in 7th Edition. WotC took it off in response.

Since WotC hasn't shown any forthcomingness about wanting to remove any more cards from the list, I too doubt we're gonna see that happen again.
