Pets

Recommended Posts

Truly I have gained much wisdom from my years on YCM. For how else would I have come up with such a deep, meaningful, and dare I say brilliant, topic?

Anyway won't do my usual "Post several questions in OP" thing cause people tend to take that a bit too literally. But more or less this is to discuss things about pets. Stories about your own pets, pets you'd like, your feelings on pet ownership and what should and should not be allowed in regards to pets, go wild.

Well. Not too wild. I swear if you people manage to flame in a thread about pets...

I like pets. They are nice to pet. My family has had tons of them over the years. Birds, fishes, cats, dogs, hamsters, and a bunny.

My family's longest lasting pet was my grandma's Cenzontle (a kind of mockingbird) who was only like 4 years younger than me and lived a little short of 20 years. After the loss I researched what it was and why it had lived for so long, and it was an interesting read. Among other things, I learned that nowadays it is apparently illegal to have them as pets anymore, and that they are called the way they are because they "mock" other birds by imitating other bird species' sounds rather than having their own tweeting noises.

My bunny when I was in elementary school was pretty funny to see around. I'd let it loose around the backyard and he'd have a favorite spot (a chair that nobody ever used) to jump into. One time we had a fire at a factory near my house and the neighbors were all taking out their important stuff into their cars just in case from how bad it looked, and I remember my mom laughed at me because the first thing I grabbed was my bunny inside a cardboard box with holes.

Dogs are always nice to have around, making the house more lively. Though I've lately thought maybe our current dog could be feeling a bit lonely with how busy everybody has been the past few months....  I'm a little worried but we'll sort things out.

I loves me some cute lil critters.

Until recently, my little sister had these two little bunnies. The first one, Puff, was quite the naughty guy before he got his friend. We'd let him run around in the living room of our apartment sometimes so he didn't have to just always be in his tiny cage. But then one time in a December the neat little color changing fiber optic lights of our Christmas tree stopped working. Sure enough we found that the wire had been chewed through by none other than Puff on one of his little excursions. Didn't ruin Christmas but was a fun time.

After my family moved to a house in Washington we were finally able to have cats/dogs and such. Not long after we got there we got a little kitten named Cinder. Tiniest little thing. She's a few years old now but still on the petite side of things. Anyway second day we had her she was up on the second floor weaving in and out of the posts along the stairs and she fell. Was totally fine, landed on her feet and stuff. But yeah that was fun. Second day with tiny kitten and she falls from the second floor to the living room.

We also got a dog named Wybie who I love to death and miss terribly while I'm away from him months at a time at college. He's a total couch potato just like the rest of us and is a perfect fit for the family. When I'm tired I sit down and wish I could just relax and pet him. But hey summer's approaching so I'll be back to see him in no time.

I had a couple of betta fish in the later part of grade school and maybe middle school (partly due to winning a certificate for free ones due to a reading program; though bettas aren't really expensive otherwise). I shouldn't really call them pets because my dad usually took care of them; not me. All of the fish are dead now; some of them were buried in the backyard, but I think some stray cats dug them up shortly after.

Would like to get a pet rabbit because I like bunnies, but probably may be hard to have one considering my house is kinda hot during the daytime (no AC, I live in an area that's generally hot [but not desert strength] and I usually am gone for half the day due to school). That, and a lot of stuff I have to pick up.

With regards to stuff allowed as pets, definitely not a snake (iirc they're banned in this state, as are certain lizards/reptiles) and otherwise pets that are known to attack people/property. Latter refers to pit bulls a lot of the time, but really any savage dog. (One of my neighbors has two dogs, in which one of them chased me down the street one time when I was walking home; they are no longer there). That, and maybe any animal that you can't reasonably house at home.

(In my case, I have a small backyard in a residential area, so...bigger animals are out.)

The only pets I've had were fish. Squidward the goldfish was the one that lived longest, lasted around a year or so. My sister and I were scared of dogs up until middle school; we probably would've gotten one if it weren't for that since all four of us love dogs now.

When I'm older, I'm hoping to get a dog. Doesn't matter what breed, but I like pomeranians and huskies. And I'm gonna name it Denver  :Kappa:

I've had these two guys in my life for some time. The one on the right is Joe; he's been my cat for 15 years now since he was lil' bab, and the one on the left is Markus, a neighbor's cat that we adopted after he was left behind when they moved away.

Joe's an affectionate and kind boy. He loves to be held and cuddled, and he's perfect for indoors, though he doesn't like being inside for more than a few hours. He's quiet, only really meows when he's very hungry, and is just generally a sweet lad. He always runs out to say hi to me when my car pulls in and I get home, even when it's late out, and that's always really nice to see. Indoors he more or less either seeks out an old blanket we let him sleep on, and then he hangs out on it (or hops on your lap if you sit down), or he hangs out in the kitchen and watches people do their thing.

Markus is a noisy boy, he meows often and really likes to get attention. Which is funny, because he's also fairly timid. He can be pretty easy to spoop, but he enjoys being around the people he's comfortable to be around. While Joe's more cuddly and affectionate, Markus is more... well, he just really likes being pet. He won't be very affectionate or cuddly in return; he's like a dog where you'll pet him and he'll love it, and when you stop he just looks at you and meows, more or less trying to get you to pet him again. Sometimes he'll put his paw on your leg with his claws out to get your attention, and he doesn't scratch or really do it in a way that he's trying to make it hurt, but it does anyways because his claws are freaking RAZOR SHARP and he doesn't realize this because he's a cat. Also, he drools when you pet him a lot, and that can be annoying. Bringing him inside, he roams around a lot more than Joe, and makes a LOT of noise. Eventually he'll settle down, but it's annoying. He'll also claw up the carpet a bit. I'd love to cuddle with him more because he's a big floof, but dang those claws and that drooling.
