Part 1 - Fort Up

The airship was incredibly noisy, much more than most models of Kestorian Brigade. A ragged-looking affair, it flew across the sky with a slight but noticeable list to the left, occasionally being jerked back on course by the pilot's impatient nudge of the controls. A thin sheen of dust was adhered to the surface, dulling the metallic blue of the craft. The words "O'l Reliable" were scrawled across the side in fading white paint, in a lazy font that clearly indicated the sarcasm behind the name.

"We're almost to Fort Goldenrod!" one of the pilots shouted into his headset over the rattling of the engine, the words sounding in the headsets of the people sitting behind him, though most of their sets were squawking awkwardly between words. "Get ready to unload quickly, we're on a tight schedule," he added bluntly, turning his eyes back to the landscape that flew below them.

The tall, thin, enthusiastic man standing in the cargo hold smiled brightly, his smile almost as bright as the medals on his chest. He was Colonel Timothy Braves, although he insisted he be called Tim so vigorously that his full name was quite forgotten by this point, which was purely by design. He had been the man to recommend the reassignment of the group who sat around him, altogether a much more glum-looking bunch than he was. He stuck out like a sore thumb, standing upright somehow in the rumbling aircraft as it was buffeted back and forth by minor turblulence on this windy day.

"You guys are just gonna LOVE Fort Goldenrod!" he shouted to the five soldiers. "Major Lightfeather is a DELIGHT, and she blows up things WAY less than everyone says, I promise!"

"Who are you trying to kid?" asked a chubby-looking lad with curly orange hair who was sitting with his legs splayed carelessly, looking actively mutinous. "We're being sent to the worst posting for a hundred miles. Lightfeather's a maniac."

"Now listen," Braves began, sternly wagging a finger in a gesture that was meant to be punitive, but came off as foppish. "Just because Major Lightfeather chooses to self-identify as a maniac is no reason to be a party pooper, Cooper." He covered his mouth, looking positively giddy at his unintended rhyme.

Miles Cooper rolled his eyes in a very "Whatever" sort of manner, looking away and massaging the bridge of his nose. Braves turned back to the other four: Mark Last-Name, Hana Monroe, Lora Falcrest, and Leonard Davis. "Major Lightfeather may be a little... quirky. But she's a sound military mind, and you'll learn much from her."

The ship rocked as an explosion sounded uncomfortably close to them out of nowhere. Braves stumbled, whipping around to the cockpit. "Pilot!"

"I HAVE a NAME," the pilot responded irritably.

"Who's shooting at us?!" Braves demanded, bolting up behind his chair. "Are we drawing fire from Fort Floe?"

"It's LAWRENCE, if you CARE."

"IS IT THE VALDRIANS?"

"No, it's Lightfeather," he sighed, nudging the ship away from a spiraling fireball that rose from a fort far below, one ringed by walls of yellowed stone. "She always shoots at the transport convoys. Don't worry," he assured the pale-faced Braves. "She's a terrible shot."

- - - - - - -

"Are our men shooting at that ship?"

The heavily-bearded Colonel Kemper leered through his squinty eyes at the weaving Kestorian craft from his spot in the co-pilot's seat. "No. The men we have stationed at Fort Floe are too incompetent to shoot an enemy aircraft. They are taking friendly fire."

The pilot chortled. "Idiot Kestorians, firing on their own. Maybe they're shooting at a load of fodder like this one?" he asked, yelling the last bit loud enough that the four in the back of the bulky silver aircraft could hear him quite clearly. Callisto Hawkins, Haki Han, Viktoria Petrov, and Dimitri Ramazov were huddled together in the remarkably small interior, the small space made tighter by the fur coats they had brought from the frigid border with Valdria, in which they were now sweating like crazy.

"Listen, screwups," Kemper called back over his shoulder. "Major Osborne will be waiting to greet you when we land. If you know what is good for you, you will be quiet and you will do as you are told. Osborne may choose to run a loose ship on his watch, but you are still under my watch until we take off, and I will accept. No. Insubordination."

Viktoria scowled angrily, her hands kneading each other furiously in her lap as the bumping ship knocked her brunette hair back over her eyes. Dimitri yawned ostentatiously, drawing a glare from Kemper. Dimitri shrugged, turning to look with hooded eyes to Callisto and Haki.

"Kind of wish they would get it over with and just turn a firing squad on us. You know they want to," he went on, his thin face the very definition of uncaring lack of thought.

- - - - - - -

"Oooooh, clever, you are!" shouted Major Hadley Lightfeather, scampering to and fro in the same twenty-foot space atop the walls of Fort Goldenrod, her long black hair flying after her. She was quite a sight, with her blue uniform tailored to have two ridiculously ostentatious (even for the Kestorian Brigade) tails flying off the back, her Major's cap cocked at a jaunty angle, moving with the energy of a woman ten years her junior, despite being in her mid-thirties. A purple and red dragon-like creature followed her, the Solid Vision monster shooting off a ball of flame every few seconds when Hadley pointed the arm with her active Duel Disk at the sky.

Beside her stood a man, or rather someone who looked rather like one. His glossy skin and metallic arm revealed pretty effectively that he was actually a robot, and Lightfeather turned to him now. "Come on, TIM03, I called you up here to cheer me on! I'm much better with an audience when I'm firing on the enemy!"

"Hey, Cap, what are you doing?" came a very annoyed voice from her Duel Disk, the name "Wade" scrolling across the top to indicate who was using the radio function. "You know that ship is one of ours, right?"

"That's just what they WANT you to think, Slilson!" Hadley shouted into the Duel Disk, loudly enough to induce feedback on Wade's end from his position in the lookout tower. "It's a Valdrian gunship in disguise! Haven't you learned anything from the slideshows?"

There was a moment of silence from the other end, and then: "Of course, how could I forget?" Wade's voice barely masked the sarcasm. "You know, I think you can get a better angle of fire from upper wall. Much easier to hit them that way."

"You're a GENIUS, Slilson! TIM03, let's go!" Hadley proclaimed, turning to bolt up a ladder, scrambling up the wall to a higher bastion, her monster spreading its wings to ascend with her. From a nearby window poked a head with long red hair, the young woman peering out with confusion.

"Captain, what are you-" Lieutenant Sophie Fenson blanched as she saw just what her commanding officer was shooting at. "CAPTAIN!" She turned her head up towards the watchtower, yelling at it even as she used her radio in her Duel Disk to chew him out directly: "Wade, you jabroni, I told you that's not FUNNY!"

- - - - - - -

Even with his expression a mask of nihilism, Ronan Osborne cut an impressive figure. Approaching sixty, he looked more like he was approaching forty, only the flecks of iron gray in his otherwise rich chestnut hair and scraggly stubble the only hints at his age, the man was a muscular wall, standing at six foot three and looking like he could bench a truck. He wore his silver military jacket open, with a simple black tank top below it, dogtags clinking against his chest as he strode through the base, making his way to the airfield.

"Major Osborne!" A tall, thin, and impeccably dressed Lieutenant Ian Wilder ran to catch up with him, the very picture of military splendor next to the frighteningly casual Osborne's dress. "Colonel Kemper is almost here; They'll be landing in two minutes. Shall I assemble the troops to greet him?"

"That won't be necessary," sighed his commanding officer, waving a hand dismissively. Wilder frowned worriedly, wringing his hands.

"Are you sure? You know how strict Colonel Kemper-"

"Marcus. Heishi." Osborne interrupted Wilder, calling lazily down a hallway towards the mess hall, where two of his men were exiting. "We're meeting the new arrivals on the airfield. It shouldn't take long." He turned back to the visibly irritated Wilder. "There. I've assembled the troops."

"I kind of meant ALL of them," he protested, looking warily at the two. "Besides, you think it's a good idea to bring... you know..." he trailed off, trying and failing not to make it obvious that he was nodding his head towards Marcus. "He's... a bit much, don't you think?"

"Black works as a welcoming party as well as any of you," Osborne sighed, the statement a retort to Wilder as much as it was a slight to every one of them. "Airfield. Let's get it over with." He turned, striding off on his original path. Ian looked warily at Heishi and Marcus before strutting off to join his Major, the group led out onto the airfield as the ship began to touch down, the door opening to reveal the four new additions to Fort Floe to the base, and the bright, warn, early morning sun of Scayna.

-Intro-

"You guys are just gonna LOVE Fort Goldenrod! Major Lightfeather is a DELIGHT, and she blows up things WAY less than everyone says, I promise!"

"Major Lightfeather may be a little... quirky. But she's a sound military mind, and you'll learn much from her."

And I care because......? These were Leonard Davis' first thoughts as Colonel Timothy Braves explained the Major of the Kestorian fort known as Goldenrod. Truth be told, he didn't care about how great the facility was. He knew exactly what it was either way you sliced it...

A correctional facility...pretty much military prison. Just without all the cells...and actual inmates...and possibly the terrible food.

Nevertheless, Leonard just sat there listening to Braves talk all this stuff up, but with all this happening...they were immediately shot at by something. Unfortunately, it WASN'T the Valdrians.

"Pilot!"

"I HAVE a NAME,"

"Who's shooting at us?! Are we drawing fire from Fort Floe?"

"It's LAWRENCE, if you CARE."

"IS IT THE VALDRIANS?"

"No, it's Lightfeather, she always shoots at the transport convoys. Don't worry, he's a terrible shot."

"Wait...SOMEONE FROM THAT BASE IS FIRING AT US?!" Leonard shouted from his seat, directing his conversation towards the Pilot...obviously named Lawrence. "What the hell man?! Has no one heard of SAME FUCKIN' TEAM?!"

He slowly rubbed his temples. And he was sent to this correctional facility for calling another person a team-killer...THIS seemed even more so now. Jesus H Christ...moment I get on ground, I'm beating the hell outta the person who thought that was a good idea! he thought, shaking his head.

This could ONLY be good signs of what was to come...fan-FREAKING-tastic...

The ride in the airship seemed to last forever, what with everyone being quiet and the ship seeming to be the only source of noise in the area where everyone was sitting. Lora nudged around a bit, trying to find ways to entertain herself, but there wasn't anything to distract her on this ship. She occasionally let out a bored yawn and rest her head on a big green bag that was sitting on her lap.

Her head immediately turned to the Colonel when he spoke up. "You guys are just gonna LOVE Fort Goldenrod!" he shouted to the five soldiers. "Major Lightfeather is a DELIGHT, and she blows up things WAY less than everyone says, I promise!"

She was about to speak up when another passenger seemed to argue against Tim's words. The Colonel simply dismissed the passenger, Miles, and called him a party pooper. Lora agreed on that. "Yeah, nobody likes party poopers. I for one am excited." She said with a genuine smile. That smile quickly faded when the ship suddenly shook from turbulence of some kind.

The sudden sound of an explosion and the rocking ship made Lora shriek, "NYAAAAH!!" The bag in her lap seemed to shuffle a bit as if something was inside and a slight meowing sound could be heard from it. Lora kept a hold of the bag and gave a nervous and slightly embarrassed smile.

The apparent fireball that exploded by the ship came from the very person that Tim was talking about, Lightfeather. Leonard, another passenger with Lora, was none too happy about this and was openly yelling at the Colonel. Lora just kept ahold of her suspicious luggage and looked from passenger to passenger to observe everyone elses reaction.

As Marcus was exiting the mess hall, he was trying to tell what he felt was a hilarious story to Heishi. "And so at this point, the souffle has COLLAPSED entirely--"

"Marcus. Heishi."

Marcus snapped his head around to face his superior and jogged roughly over to him, tucking a rolled-up trench coat under his arm. Marcus had a tendency to wear his uniform a little sloppy, but never enough to earn a reprimand. A button undone at the top, or not wearing his assigned footwear, or he'd wear one of his three near-identical black-and-red trench coats on top when the weather was bad.

"We're meeting the new arrivals on the airfield. It shouldn't take long. There. I've assembled the troops."

"I kind of meant ALL of them," Marcus could hear the lieutenant whining. "Besides, you think it's a good idea to bring... you know... He's... a bit much, don't you think?"

The word you're looking for is Kestorian you racist Scaynan funk. Was what he wanted to say, but instead he just faked a coughing fit with a few thinly-disguised curse words in it, before smiling brightly at the Lieutenant as the Major shut him down.

"Black works as a welcoming party as well as any of you. Airfield. Let's get it over with."

Marcus would have had a little trouble discerning whether that was a compliment or an insult, had it not been Osborne who said it. He bit back a nasty remark and instead focused on the fact they there was new blood! Hopefully these ones would be more moderately patriotic compared to the officers of Fort Floe.

***

When they got to the airfield, Marcus stood at a sort of loose attention, caring a bit more about making a good impression than about making the Major and Lieutenant happy. They were never going to be satisfied regardless.

When the aircraft doors opened and the newbies stepped out, Marcus carefully waited for someone else to speak first as he inspected his new potential friends and enemies.

"Kind of wish they would get it over with and just turn a firing squad on us. You know they want to."

"Firing squad?" Callisto scoffed in return. Talk about a pathetic way to die. "Firing squads are best used for show only. There's no excitement in such a dull way to die! If you want to be executed, aim for something grander, like a guillotine or being buried alive. I'd prefer the buried alive route myself, sitting there and slowly running out of air and sanity. And then once it's all gone, suffocation begins and the person you buried finally has their frail little mind shattered, and-kee-hee-hee-hee..." Now Callisto wanted to bury somebody alive to see how it would go. One of the Fort Goldenrod soldiers perhaps. Not like the Kestorian army would miss anyone out of their latest batch of screballs and failures. Not to mention every Kestorian taken out of the picture was one less Kestorian for the armies of Valdria to worry about.

She could imagine it now. The soldier being buried. Their suffocation. The point where they finally snap and lose their sanity, never being the same person again if they manage to escape somehow. It was a daydream as pleasant as Callisto could ask, as she stared out into space and merrily rocked to and fro to the images in her head.

And then the airship landed, returning Callisto to reality. She stepped out, being greeted with the warm Scaynan morning. This was the Scayna she wanted to live in. Not the one near Valdria's border where poor orphanage funding meant thin blankets that did nothing to ward off the cold. Not the Scayna near the Kestorian border either; she hated those guys. This one right here. Warm, but not too warm. South, but not too far south. Just right. Callisto could get used to this place.

And before her stood the one and only. Major Ronan Osborne. "A pleasure to meet you, Major. Although..." Callisto put her hand on top of her head, and moved it forward just a bit, before lowering it to where it was more level with where Ronan's head would be. "I thought you'd be taller."

Heishi exited the mess hall, when Marcus joined him. He started telling him, what appeared to be, a funny story. Somehow, Heishi got slightly intrigued by that.

"... And so at this point, the souffle has COLLAPSED entirely--" "Marcus. Heishi." sighed Major Osborn. All of a sudden, Marcus was no longer at Heishi's side. Heishi turned around to see Marcus running over their superior. Heishi hurried to catch up his comrade.

"We're meeting the new arrivals on the airfield. It shouldn't take long, There. I've assembled the troops."

"I kind of meant ALL of them... Besides, you think it's a good idea to bring... you know... He's... a bit much, don't you think?"

Disturbed by that comment, Heishi gave a death glare to that Lieutenant, but it wasn't much noticeable due to Heishi's everlasting frowning facial expression. Marcus on the other hand was faking a smile and fight the urge to insult the Lieutenant.

*Heishi took a deep breath*

Heishi was the one of the few who didn't discriminate Marcus, and that was due to their similar past: Both tried to run away from a living hell, but ended-up in an endless nightmare. Despite showing him nothing but blunt comments and unemotional expressions, he deeply admired Marcus because, unlike Heishi ... unlike Berth... Marcus was strong enough to fight back and cope up with this unlivable environment.

Heishi's flashbacks then got interrupted. "Black works as a welcoming party as well as any of you," Osborne sighed, "Airfield. Let's get it over with."

As they arrived to the airfield, Heishi straighten his back, closed his eyes for seconds, and raised his head, contemplating Scayna's reddish morning sky... "Tsk, more brats to deal with", he murmured.

Hana was bouncing. Literally hopping up and down in her seat as she took in the rather loud trip. She was admittedly glad to be away from the battlefield. She got to experience it but she was ready for the next thing.

And it seems the next thing was some kind of training camp. Something she had heard about from her parents. Evidently it was supposed to be serious but it never was? She didn't quite get it but apparently there was often baths involved from what her parents told her. While that was a strange thing to focus on Hana did enjoy baths.

"Major Lightfeather may be a little... quirky. But she's a sound military mind, and you'll learn much from her."

"She sounds fun!" Hana chirped up, grinning at Braves. What was wrong with a little bit of quirk now and then? She fully hopped out of her seat, not realizing she was supposed to be strapped in, and spun in a circle, taking in all the other passengers. "You guys ready? It's gonna be G R E A T, great!"

Just as she finished her sentence an explosion sounded nearby and Hana fell face first onto the floor.

"What the hell man?! Has no one heard of SAME FUCKIN' TEAM?!"

Hana rolled onto her back and looked up at the rather angry man. She tugged at his pants. "Hey. Calm down. Think about it as fireworks for our arrival!" She got up in a hurry and moved to the nearest opening, attempting to lean out to take a better look. "Thank you for the fireworks Major Lady!" Hana shouted. She turned back to the rest. "Everything's moving so fast out there! Hey, pilot guy, er, Larry! Go faster!"

"You're a GENIUS, Slilson! TIM03, let's go!" Wade chuckled at those words, leaning against his chair, kicking up his feet.

"Oh, I know, but I wouldn't be this good with your insightful teachings," He stated. His grin only grew wider as he heard a very familiar voice blare over his radio.

"Wade, you jabroni, I told you that's not FUNNY!" Sophie, the cute one, yelled at him. Wade took some wads of paper and crumbled them against his duel disk's radio.

"What's that? It sounds like you told me that it was very funny, and you'd go on a date with me. I'm all up for that," He stated. He then threw the paper over his shoulder and kept an eye over the land. From the top, he could see it all. It was so vast, so majestic, and--- "GOD THIS IS BORING!!" He closed his eyes and began to snore. "I need a squirrel to punt,"

Haki looked over deck, looking at the cards, shuffling them as he did. He wanted to get better, but all he ever managed to do was screw up, and it seemed as if his goal was getting further and further away from him each day. Being shipped off to this camp wasn't helping matters at all. He was suddenly picked up and punted out of his thoughts by a voice.

No. Insubordination." Well, that wasn't going to be an issue. He was too scared to even speak up at the moment.

Haki just shivered. Oh man, why was his life descending into a deeper and deeper hell?

"Firing squad?" Callisto scoffed in return. Talk about a pathetic way to die. "Firing squads are best used for show only. There's no excitement in such a dull way to die! If you want to be executed, aim for something grander, like a guillotine or being buried alive. I'd prefer the buried alive route myself, sitting there and slowly running out of air and sanity. And then once it's all gone, suffocation begins and the person you buried finally has their frail little mind shattered, and-kee-hee-hee-hee..."

At this point, Haki had snuck to the back and found a very comfy hiding hole in a dark corner. Man, could things get worse?

“What the…” Jack Blaze let his voice trail off as he stared at the weird scene that was playing out in the distance. Some kind of nutjob at the Kestorian place was firing at their own ship. Standing on the roof of Fort Floe, Jack had been enjoying the fresh air until said nutjob started shooting. Jack couldn’t really see the person who was doing the firing since they were too far away. After a few more seconds of staring, Jack moved his attention to the cards he held in his hand. They were rare cards, but they weren’t his. He had stolen them from some of his fellow Valdria soldiers. Their previous owners were probably realizing that they were gone right about now.

Jack smiled as he thought about what would happen to him if he got caught with these stolen cards. But he wasn’t gonna get caught. Nothing was going to ruin his perfect stealing record. After quickly inspecting the cards, he stuffed them in his pockets. It was then that he noticed another ship in the air that was coming to Fort Floe. Curious, Jack leaned over and watched as the ship landed on the airstrip. As the doors of the ship opened, Jack flashed a wolfish grin as he looked at the people who stood in the doorway. “Oh look, more screwups inbound.” He said to himself as he watched.

As the crew aboard the airship had been flying along, there sat a rather unkempt looking boy with messy purple hair. With hands folded and chin resting atop them, the boy seemed to be in deep thought. Yes, there seemed to be an unwavering focus in his gaze, directed at nowhere in particular, with an expression that seemed to be contemplating something. While outwardly he seemed silent, were one to listen to his inner most thoughts they would hear a noise that would make even greater men turn back. Yes, the strange sound of the waves of the hollow sea pushing through a rusted industrial facility that was also on fire. Truly, the inner machinations of this boy's mind were an enigma.

Wait. Fire. Yes. "Fire!" He seemed to randomly shout as the plane's turbulence from the oncoming fire snapped him back to reality. As he looked around, he saw that there was member in particular who looked perturbed by the whole, "getting fired on by your officer thing," to which Mark could only say, with an odd fondness in his voice, "ah yes. That reminds me of the time that we were out in the field and our own tank- Wait. No that never happened." He seemed oddly pensive look until the orange girl spoke up. He snapped his fingers as if she were onto something and pointed at her. "Yes. Fireworks. Genius. Think of them as tiny little explosions of joy right in your face. That frown you are having!" He pointed to the sour looking individual. "Upside down it!" Looking in the direction the girl was yelling at he said, "yes Larry. Faster would be better. After all, the faster you go the more face explosions you see. Oh my I wonder what's making these as well. Hey have you guys ever seen a fireworks maker? I've always wondered what they looked like but I never pay attention to them when there's fireworks going on."

"You're a GENIUS, Slilson! TIM03, let's go!" Hadley proclaimed

"YES MAJOR LIGHTFEATHER! WE WILL SHOW THE valdrian SCUM THE MIGHT OF FORT GOLDENROD." TIM03 spoke in a chirpy but unnerving tone, as if each word was recorded separately then played back in a different order so that the pitch was never the same from syllable to syllable.

It climbed the ladder behind the major, knowing well enough that they were firing on their own ship but Lightfeather's enthusiasm was so wonderful that it couldn't help but go along. So up the ladder it went and firmly gripped the tail of Lightfeather's flying beast as it took to the air to find a better position.

"MAJOR, WHILE I ENJOY FIRING ON OUR FOES WITH YOU MAY I SUGGEST WE INTERCEPT THE SHIP FROM THE AIR? IT IS MORE WONDERFUL TO SEE THE FACE OF THE ENEMY AS THEY SUFFER DEFEAT THAN IT IS TO ATTACK FROM A DISTANCE AND ONLY FIND THEIR BODIES IN ASHES." While its safeguards punished it for lying to a superior officer there was no efficient alternative. Soon the Major would see the markings of a Kestorian ship and board it so they could make new friends.

In the meantime, TIM03 decided to power down a few extraneous functions and enjoy the ride.

Braves was quickly descending into full-on panic as the fireballs seemed to be coming much closer to the ship as Hadley ascended the walls fo the fort. "Are you talling me she does this all the time? AND WHY DO I HEAR A CAT?!" he demanded, whirling around with wild eyes, desparately searching for the noise that had come from Lora's bag, waving his hands at Mark to try and shoo the excited lad away from him.

"HALT, ruffians!" squawked an enthusiastic voice over the radio, loudly blaring through the ship. "Come any closer and I'll blast you out of the sky, I can TOTALLY do that! These have all been warning shots!" Then, muffled, they could hear, "They WANT us to get closer to them, TIM03."

"What did you call me, Lightfeather?!" Braves demanded, suddenly looking embarassed. "It's Tim, Tim, Colonel Tim Braves!"

"Tiiiiiiiim!" Hadley exclaimed cheerily, the loud cry of "Captain, stop shooting!" overlapping with the sudden ceasing of fireballs. "I haven't seen you in... what, three years? You're a Valdrian soldier now? Shame."

"No, Major Lightfeather, ceasefire!" Braves barked desparately, not seeming to notice that she already had. "We're transporting the new blood here, that's all, we aren't Valdrians"

"Can confirm," the pilot drawled, the man seeming to not have been at all put off by being fired on by his own side. In actuality,he had been flashing annoyed looks at Leonard and Braves the entire time.

"Lawrence! Good to hear your voice, old chum!"

"THANK YOU," Lawrence said emphatically, glaring at Braves, who was leaning against the wall, looking like he might faint soon. "Your airfield clear? If so Imma take it in for a landing, Captain."

"She's a Major," Braves corrected weakly, reviving somewhat at the aspect of correct protocol. Lawrence shrugged.

"She prefers to be called 'Captain.' Says it sounds better."

"Course she does," Braves sighed weakly.

Viktoria looked at Callisto with apprehension and horror, but Dimitri merely raised an eyebrow. "Who cares if how you die is cool and everything?" he asked, shrugging. "You're dead, aren't you?"

"Get off the ship, you simpering nihilist," Kemper barked back as the doors opened. He ushered them all down onto the airfield, the engines powering down

Osborne simply stared at the recruits, barely even acknowledging Callisto's slight. Kemper reacted otherwise, reaching up to the girl's head and cuffing her on the ear sharply.

"You will respect your superior, even if he is superior to only you," he growled. Osborne reacted with the same expression he had kept on all day: Utter apathy.

"It is good to see you, Colonel Kemper," he droned, not seeming like it was good at all. He gestured to Marcus and Heishi. "I'm sure my troops and I can whip these new arrivals into shape."

Kemper scowled. "I am not convinced of that. You don't even have a true Valdrian as your choice of lieutenant," he spat, glaring at Ian, who redoubled his efforts to stand at the most perfect attention possible, though he was visibly embarassed.

Kemper now nodded to Callisto and Viktoria. "These two in particular are troublesome. Absolute madwomen, the pair of them." He then nodded to Dimitri. "This one, endlessly lazy. And Comrade Han is- Where is Comrade Han?"

He looked back into the ship where Haki was hiding. "Front and center, you idiot," he snarled, visibly angry as one of the pilots pushed the boy out onto the airfield. "As you can see, he has the ambition of a worm."

"I'll try my best," was Ronan's simple reply. Kemper scoffed, turning and stalking back into the airship, which lifted off soon afterward, flying away like it couldn't leave fast enough.

Osborne looked over the four soldiers wearily, eyes hooded before he sighed, turning and waving a dissmissive hand. "They're yours, Lieutenant Wilder," he said, Ian sputtering in surprise as the man simply walked off, breezing through the gap between Heishi and Marcus as he returned to the base.

"Well, um..." Ian stammered, clearing his throat. "Well, everyone, that was Major Ronan Osborne-"

"Ya don't say?" asked Dimitri, yawning ostentatiously. Flustered, Ian went on.

"Anyway, I am Lieutenant Ian Wilder, and uh, welcome to Fort Floe. Major Osborne doesn't insist on maintaining military dress, you can dress however you like," he rambled, clearly plucking things to talk about out of midair as he self-consciously adjusted his own perfectly presented uniform, "Uuuuh, you report to me, an I-"

"What are you lookin' at?" Ian whipped his head around to see Viktoria standing at the base wall, yelling up at the roof. He looked up to see Jack Blaze peering down at them, and he frowned.

"Blaze, what have we told you about being on the roof ouside of a combat situation? Get down-"

"Come down here and look at me like that, I dare you!" Viktoria yelled apoplectically. Ian ran forward, trying to calm her down and receiving several irritated knocks to the chest from the girl for his trouble.

"Is he always like that?" Dimitri asked Marcus, pointing to Ian. He looked at the stone-faced Heishi and snorted. "You his brother or something, Frowny?"

After a wobbly landing in Fort Goldenrod, the doors to the ship opened to reveal three figures waiting for the new arrivals: TIM03, an irate Lieutenant Fenson yelling into her Duel Disk to get the hell down here, Wade, you asinine waste of molecules, and in the center, all five feet and six inches of Major "Captain" Hadley Lightfeather, her military jacket disheveled, hat askew, and grin ever-present.

"Hey, guys!" she exclaimed cheerily as Braves woozily led the group out of the ship. "Major Hadley here, but you can just call me 'Captain,' most everyone does. Sorry for shooting at you fellas, but you just are so CONVINCING as a spy brigade! We should transfer you to espionage after you're all done here!"

Braves coughed awkwardly. "Yes, well, of course advancement should only be discussed then, Major Lightfeather-"

"Ooooh, Braaaaaves," Hadley chided him, leaping forward to give the man a hug that he awkwardly received, standing stock still like a tree. "It's so good to SEE you. Still rocking all that military bling, eh?" she asked, knocking a nail against some of his medals with a noticeable clink. "We'll have none of that here," she called to the others assembled. "You guys are free to wear whatever's comfortable round here. I only wear my own uniform cause, well, look at it!" she hollered, twirling and sending her coattails whirling, battering against Braves' knees.

"You guys have a nice flight?" she asked, changing the subject again almost instantly as she whirled back to the new arrivals, Sophie popping her head over Hadley's shoulder to flash them all an apologetic look. "We are gonna have the BEST time here; It's gonna be great."

Miles Cooper leaned over towards Leonard. "What the actual hell," he whispered.

"Hey. Calm down. Think about it as fireworks for our arrival!"

Fireworks? Was this girl for real? Leonard couldn't exactly tell if this was her making a joke or if she was seriously believing this. Regardless, he shrugged it off, immediately hearing someone else speak.

"That frown you are having! Upside down it!"

Fantastic...someone else who seemed to be in their own little world, least from what he could tell. Regardless, the naivety of not only the girl but the guy reminded him of a friend he had in basic, Private Jim. Unfortunately, that was about the time he was dating his then girlfriend Alice. Poor Jim...Alice laid the smack down on him so badly that he had to be sent off to receive medical treatment.

A small smile appeared on Leonard's face when he thought of this, but his thoughts were derailed as he heard the voice of a new individual from the radio.

"No, Major Lightfeather, ceasefire! We're transporting the new blood here, that's all, we aren't Valdrians"

"Can confirm!"

"Lawrence! Good to hear your voice, old chum!"

"Seriously? They thought we were Valdrians?" Leonard asked, rubbing the bridge of his nose some. "This has to be a prank..."

Shortly After Landing

"Sorry for shooting at you fellas, but you just are so CONVINCING as a spy brigade! We should transfer you to espionage after you're all done here!"

It wasn't a prank....fan-freaking-tastic. Leonard stood there looking at Major...or...Captain Lightfeather, a pretty steamed Lieutenant, and what seemed to be a robot...or an android...he really couldn't tell and he frankly didn't give a sh-

"You guys have a nice flight? We are gonna have the BEST time here; It's gonna be great."

This...CAN'T be our commanding officer... Leonard thought, shaking his head some. He crossed his arms slowly, before noticing a guy leaning over towards him, whispering.

"What the actual hell?"

"Your guess is as good as mine..." he whispered back. "Something tells me they've been here too long."

Marcus nodded. "Constantly. He's also oddly discriminatory, so on the off-chance any of you are ancestrally Kestorian, get ready for hell because EVERYONE is like that." He threw out his arms and grinned broadly. "Welcome to Fort Floe: Where no-one gives a damn! I'm Marcus Black, don't listen to the Lieutenant: I'm a goddamn delight. This slab of Valdrian glacial ice is Heishi. We're basically BFFs." He unrolls his trench and throws it on, before gesturing for them to follow him off the airfield. "C'mon, I'll give you the not-so-grand tour while Lieutenant Milder is distracted. Tell me about yourselves in the meantime."

The new blood didn't look like much (the creepy girl and that Haki guy were both kinda cute), but nobody who gets sent here ever is. They've all got something to them, he was sure.

"Two madwomen, a brat, and a scaredy cat" Heishi nodded to Marcus as General Osborne walked-off "We are going to deal with a lot of s*** from now on" he growled

"You his brother or something, Frowny?"

"You will shut your f..." "Constantly. He's also oddly discriminatory, so on the off-chance any of you are ancestrally Kestorian, get ready for hell because EVERYONE is like that." Marcus interrupted Heishi's blatant reply and grinned broadly.

"Welcome to Fort Floe: Where no-one gives a damn! I'm Marcus Black, don't listen to the Lieutenant: I'm a goddamn delight. This slab of Valdrian glacial ice is Heishi. We're basically BFFs." Heishi glanced at Marcus and smirked slightly. He removed his jacket, stretched his shoulders, caressed his blond hair, and then fixed his cold dead sight on the newbies "Prepare your rectum brats!" he said vulgarly, "Your dignity, your freedom? forget about them, there is no such thing here, only absolute obedience, cause from now on...", he took a pause, widened his eyes slightly, fixed his eyes on that girl named Callisto, and made a creepy grin "... you are nothing but pawns of Kestoria!"

"C'mon, I'll give you the not-so-grand tour while Lieutenant Milder is distracted. Tell me about yourselves in the meantime." said Marcus like nothing happened, "and keep it short" added Heishi.

As they went to Marcus delightful tour, Heishi was gazing at that boy, warily, "so, the name is Haki ..." he murmured.

"We are gonna have the BEST time here; It's gonna be great."

TIM03 decided that now the Major had finished her speech it would be best to put everyone's minds at ease by introducing itself to the newcomers en' masse. It was certain that they would be accepting friends and willing to take on board the fact that an android would be staying with them to work and train.

"HELLO NEW FRIENDS! I AM TIM03. IT IS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU ALL. I LOOK FORWARD TO TRAINING WITH YOU SO THAT WE CAN RE-ENTER THE BATTLEFIELD TO ELIMINATE THE HUMAN PLAGUE THAT IS valdria."

Even Braves shifted uncomfortably at the sudden tone of the final word. Noticing this, the AI knew it had to do better to lighten the mood.

"IF ANY OF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT PROCEEDINGS HERE PLEASE ASK EITHER MYSELF, MAJOR LIGHTFEATHER OR... MISTER WADE." TIM03 took a moment to compute the fact that he was unaware of Wade's rank, or if he even had one at all. What sort of rank do you give someone who mostly sits around cracking wise and playing practical jokes?

Wade opened an eye as he heard the voice over the radio call him an asinine waste of molecules. He grabbed his radio, answering back. "Complimenting my ass? My my, how scandalous, Lieutenant," Wade commented before standing up. "Now, don't you worry. Wade's comin' down to give the newbies a good ol' Wade welcome," He stated before jumping out off the watchtower, spiraling through the air, being as flashy as possible before landing on the ground. Dusting himself off, he heard TIM03 speaking.

"HELLO NEW FRIENDS! I AM TIM03. IT IS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU ALL. I LOOK FORWARD TO TRAINING WITH YOU SO THAT WE CAN RE-ENTER THE BATTLEFIELD TO ELIMINATE THE HUMAN PLAGUE THAT IS valdria. IF ANY OF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT PROCEEDINGS HERE PLEASE ASK EITHER MYSELF, MAJOR LIGHTFEATHER OR... MISTER WADE."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Timmy, Timmy," Wade said, slapping the robot behind the head, ignoring the stinging sensation in his hand before rubbing the synthetic hair on the robot. "I told you. Just called me Wade. None of that Mister stuff, it makes me feel old," He then turned to the group. "And whazzup, newbies?" He asked as he gave them all a thumbs up. "I'm Wade, but you can call me The King of the Squirrels, Doctor Professor The Wade, Sex God, or the Great Ooglie Mooglie," He cracked his neck and took a step forward. "Now, I have a question for all of you," He suddenly whipped out a deck of card, rapidly shuffling and cutting the deck. "Anyone wanna play a card game?"

"These two in particular are troublesome. Absolute madwomen, the pair of them." Haki heard the ones up front speaking. "This one, endlessly lazy. And Comrade Han is- Where is Comrade Han?" It didn't take long for him to be dragged out of his hiding spot. "Front and center, you idiot," he snarled, visibly angry as one of the pilots pushed the boy out onto the airfield. "As you can see, he has the ambition of a worm."

It wasn't that Haki had the ambition of a worm so much as he had the will to live and not stand next to women that would more than likely kill herself and anyone near her with a fiery explosion. He was a bit distracted, but from what he could tell, Ian was not a full Valdrian, which... whoopie frizz, he supposed. Did it matter that much?

Then two people known as Marcus and Heishi came and spoke up.

"Welcome to Fort Floe: Where no-one gives a damn! I'm Marcus Black, don't listen to the Lieutenant: I'm a goddamn delight. This slab of Valdrian glacial ice is Heishi. We're basically BFFs." Well, that was semi-comforting to Haki, although he had no idea if it was really the truth.

"Prepare your rectum brats!" the other said vulgarly, "Your dignity, your freedom? Forget about them, there is no such thing here, only absolute obedience, cause from now on...", he took a pause, widened his eyes slightly, fixed his eyes on that girl named Callisto, and made a creepy grin "... you are nothing but pawns of Kestoria!"

So... things were still the same as home. Good to know.

"C'mon, I'll give you the not-so-grand tour while Lieutenant Milder is distracted. Tell me about yourselves in the meantime." said Marcus like nothing happened,

"And keep it short" added Heishi.

"I-I'm Haki Han. I a-absolutely suck at the game, and am using a d-deck way too advanced for me," That was enough info for now, right? He made sure to keep his distance from the females of the group as they walked along.

Lora breathed a sigh of relief when Braves was able to call off Lightfeather's attack. "I'm glad that's over..." she mumbled as her bag moved around a bit. She smiled nervously and held it close to herself as the transport landed. She was probably the noisiest to exit as her mechanical legs made a resounding clanking noise as she stepped off the transport ship.

"Major Hadley here, but you can just call me 'Captain,' most everyone does. Sorry for shooting at you fellas, but you just are so CONVINCING as a spy brigade! We should transfer you to espionage after you're all done here!" Well... For someone who nearly shot down her own allies she was quite excited. "We are gonna have the BEST time here; It's gonna be great." Lora smiled at this, there were so many new faces here and she couldn't wait to make new friends. Of course, with the other girls anyway, she kinda shuffled away from the guys in the group.

TIM03 was especially intimidating to Lora, but this didn't stop her from asking a question. "Uh... I have a... Question... This is just an odd one... But do you have food for uh... Animals here, specifically... Cats?"

As the airship started to get closer and closer to the base, the supposed fireworks were not relenting. In fact, he was fairly certain that they were getting closer and closer to the ship. Mark wondered what it would be like if they were hit by one. The most likely outcome was that they would then become the fireworks. He briefly wondered what colors he would burst into, when suddenly his thoughts were again interrupted by the rather loud noises produced by the man named Braves. For one with such a name he needed to have more gusto in him. The attitude not the birds. Though having more of those wouldn't hurt. Well, were it literally inside him it mi- Wait. Right. Braves. He was acting awfully loud. While Mark briefly wondered if it was panic, he then realized that maybe he was just having a good time with the fireworks as well. As the shouting continued Mark simply decided that he would join in shouting, "yes! That's the spirit! Hahahahahaha! Other loud noises!" This continued until the loud noises had ended and the gang had landed onto their base.

After the introduction to Major Captain Lightfeather and their base, Mark saluted to the woman saying, "Mark Last-name reporting for the Best Time Ever, Major Captain!" It was then that another enthusiastic individual introduced themselves and spoke about exterminating the opposing army, Mark merely walked over to him and said, "hello there Timzerothree, I look forward to being in this base with you." As he went to emphatically pat the man on the back, he would find that the man was indeed not flesh and bone. Or at least, he would find that he was made of sturdier stuff. Pulling back his hand in slight pain he then emphatically laughed and said, "hahahaha, fully equipped to high five from any area, I see! My, what do you eat to get your skin so shiny and metallic looking though?" While he had asked these questions, without skipping a beat or waiting for answers, he turned towards Wade as he had asked his question. "Doctor God of Ooglie Squirrels, what card game are you referring to? War? Blackjack? I bet it's 60 card pick up, maybe with a 15 card bonus challenge round. Or maybe even rock paper scissors! No, wait. Go fish. That's the one isn't it?!"

Hana would have high-fived Mark had she not been currently hanging onto the aircraft in order not to fall out of it. While it would be an exciting trip she wasn't much a fan of how the trip would end.

She let out a cheer as she saw the ground getting closer, closer, closer..... "Oh look that flower is bigger than the rest I wonder why!" She pointed excitedly at the aforementioned flora, just barely avoiding falling out of the aircraft.

In fact as they landed she practically tumbled out of the thing.

"You guys are free to wear whatever's comfortable round here. I only wear my own uniform cause, well, look at it!"

"Already planned on it!" Hana said after getting her bearings again and listening to what the Major, Captain, lady was saying. She gave the woman a thumbs up. "I knew I was right when I decided not to wear that stuffy thing! Score for the Hana!"

"You guys have a nice flight? We are gonna have the BEST time here; It's gonna be great."

"Ooooh I sure did!" Hana ran over to Hadley, arm extended to shake the woman's hand. "I loved your fireworks, Captain Lady Major lady!"

Mid-handshake, Hana spun to face the next to speak, completely moving on from the subject at, literally, hand.

"HELLO NEW FRIENDS! I AM TIM03. IT IS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU ALL. I LOOK FORWARD TO TRAINING WITH YOU SO THAT WE CAN RE-ENTER THE BATTLEFIELD TO ELIMINATE THE HUMAN PLAGUE THAT IS valdria."

"IF ANY OF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT PROCEEDINGS HERE PLEASE ASK EITHER MYSELF, MAJOR LIGHTFEATHER OR... MISTER WADE."

She saw the Mark man asking the important questions. She didn't have to ask this shiny man herself then. Though this meant there was nothing to keep her from being distracted from the last new addition to their happy crew.

"I'm Wade, but you can call me The King of the Squirrels, Doctor Professor The Wade, Sex God, or the Great Ooglie Mooglie,"

"Hiya, Teach! You seem like a Teach kind of guy. So you're Teach now. Hiya, Teach!"

She waved enthusiastically at Teach...but a few moments later...everything halted.

Something important happened just then. Something she couldn't let pass.

"No, wait. Go fish. That's the one isn't it?!"

"DID SOMEONE SAY FISH?"

Jack watched as the new screw-ups were welcomed to the base by Rustblood, Wilder, Marcus and Heshi. Jack found all this boring, mainly because he couldn’t hear what they were saying, but things got interesting when Rustblood left. One of the female screw-ups had noticed Jack and yelled up to him."What are you lookin' at?"

Jack was about to say some sort of joke until Lieutenant Wilder noticed him as well.

"Blaze, what have we told you about being on the roof ouside of a combat situation? Get down-" Wilder was cut off mid-sentence when the girl started yelling again.

"Come down here and look at me like that, I dare you!", she yelled, causing Wilder to come over and try to calm her down. Wilder received several hits from the girl in return.

Jack almost laughed as he watched this go down, but managed to keep his cool. “Hey Wilder! I would tell you to come up here and force me off this roof, but it appears that you have your hands full at the moment,” Jack yelled down before laughing at his own joke. He wasn’t scared of Lieutenant Wilder and never was.

Looking down at Viktoria, Jack smiled his same wolfish smile. “As for you little missy, if you want a fight then duel me sometime. But I have to warn you, you’ll be crushed ‘cause I’m the best duelist here.”

"These two in particular are troublesome. Absolute madwomen, the pair of them."

High praise.

"Prepare your rectum brats! Your dignity, your freedom? Forget about them, there is no such thing here, only absolute obedience, cause from now on...you are nothing but pawns of Kestoria!"

I'd sooner be dead. Callisto stepped forward, a grin growing on her face. "Ah, how unfortunate," she said in a tone of unconvincing politeness. "Although, I must say, I believe you made an error. We're here to fight for Valdria. Could it be? Has your time here dulled your senses so much that you forgot what you're fighting for? What a disappointment of a soldier, and they called me the screwup." Was it really just a mistake? Callisto had a hunch it wasn't; perhaps she was being tested? Was this the kind of man that tested people? Callisto hoped so. You'll be fun, I bet.

"C'mon, I'll give you the not-so-grand tour while Lieutenant Milder is distracted. Tell me about yourselves in the meantime."

"And keep it short."

"I-I'm Haki Han. I a-absolutely suck at the game, and am using a d-deck way too advanced for me."

No spine I think. Should be fun to walk all over that one if the Kestorians get boring.

The rest of the new soldiers here at Fort Floe were sure tight-lipped, weren't they? The tour went on fairly quietly until Callisto finally spoke up to break the silence. "Callisto Hawkins, Scaynan by birth. I have no love for Kestoria, so I'm fighting to help Valdria pick up what's left of Scayna before they can. I like to win, and then keep winning until I own whoever I've been dueling into submission."

Marcus glanced over his shoulder at Callisto in equal parts surprise and offense. "Chill out, girl. We're all at rock bottom, let's not try digging each others graves while we're here." He adjusts the clasps on his trench and checks the inside breast pocket. His cards were there. Good.

"...I own whoever I've been dueling into submission."

Marcus did his best not to laugh (which wasn't quite enough) as he shot a snicker to Heishi. "Kinky~!" He clutched his stomach and doubled over slightly with laughter.

"I-I'm Haki Han. I a-absolutely suck at the game, and am using a d-deck way too advanced for me." ... "So I was right" muttered Heishi...

"Then you need to try harder", he said while he made a direct eye contact with Haki, and kept staring at him "or do want to get crushed by the Kestorian army"...

"Will you please CONTROL yourself, Petrov?" Ian asked, trying to pull Victoria away from the ladder that led up to the roof Jack was on top of. She had pulled her deck from her belt and slid it into her Duel Disk the second Jack had dared her to challenge him.

"He thinks he's better than me!" She yelled, kicking Ian in the chest and sending him sprawling. "I don't deserve to be here... I have to prove to Colonel Kemper I'm worthy to be on the front lines!" She turned her eyes back up to Jack, and they were filled with fire. "I'll take apart every idiot in this Fort if I have to."

"Well," Ian croaked out, grabbing at her ankle and jerking her back to ground from his spot where he had fallen, "I'm afraid that's disorderly conduct, Petrov... I'll have to issue you a warning."

"How did someone like him get to be a Lieutenant in the VALDRIAN army, anyway?" Victoria hollered up at Jack, clearly exasperated.

"Yes!" Hadley proclaimed, applauding as Wade landed like some sort of demented superhero. "Hi, Wade, these are the new recruits: Leonard, Lora, Mark, Cooper, and Hana! Everybody, this is Wade. He's the guy who gave me such good tips on shooting at you! Learn from him!"

"IF ANY OF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT PROCEEDINGS HERE PLEASE ASK EITHER MYSELF, MAJOR LIGHTFEATHER OR... MISTER WADE."

"Hiya, Teach! You seem like a Teach kind of guy. So you're Teach now. Hiya, Teach!"

"What?" asked Sophie, distracted from the tapping she was doing on her Duel Disk, looking up in alarm. "Nononononono, OH NO, do NOT listen to-"

"Wade's done great stuff here: Provided us with laughs, shouted insults at the Valdrians over the radio, sick flips, he does a LOT of those sick flips," Hadley interrupted. She then overheard Lora asking about cats, and she frowned.

"Cats?" she asked, leaning over and wrapping an arm around Lora's shoulders protectively, drawing her close and whispering: "Do you need to use the facilities, dear? Bit of a bad time for a strike of the old Red Baron-"

"Er, Major Lightfeather-" Braves began, apparently having overheard the exchange and looking incredibly flustered. "Um, don't you think, um, Slilson, well, he's-"

"Braves, Braves, Braves, Braves, Braaaaaaaves," Hadley interrupted, jumping back to the man while Sophie faded behind Wade, shaking her head as she pointed at him, mouthing phrases like 'NO' and 'Bad idea.' "We need to catch up. You don't need to be back at HQ soon, do you?"

"Well, actually-"

"Naaaaaah, they can run the army without ya! Come on, come to my rooms. I have a good Scaynan brandy in there; It'll blast the roof right off your mouth!"

"Captain?" Sophie called back, her voice filled with mounting panic. "A little help here?"

Hadley frowned in confusion, before realization dawned in her eyes. "Ah, yes... You HAVE been working very hard, Soph. Take a load off, Wade can show the new recruits around."

"THAT'S NOT WHAT I-" she hurriedly started, but Hadley was already sauntering off, pulling the protesting Braves after her as she yelled back "Now Sophie, you RELAX for once, that's an order. Be-SIDES, TIM03 will be with them, it'll be fine. Wade, be sure to take them into Hallcrest, show them around. Haaave fun, guys!"

Sophie turned to Wade, glaring daggers at him. "Don't. You. DARE. Do anything stupid."

As the soldiers trailed in the wake of Marcus and Heishi, Dimitri lingered in the back, looking very bored. He had done nothing but snort derisively at Heishi's words, and barely seemed to be paying attention to anything Marcus was saying.

It was not until Callisto spoke up that he deigned to respond. "You're an idiot... You've already lost. We've ALL lost... Because we're here. They cared about us so little they dumped us in the most useless part of the country. We are all losers."

"Except me, anyway," he added, strolling up beside the wall of the fort, grabbing onto a ladder and beginning a liesurely climb up. "I've been planning to go AWOL the second I could, soooooo... See you idiots later, I guess. I'd offer to let you come with me, but I honestly can't really stand any one of you." He shrugged. "Any of you kids wanna say goodbye to 'ol Dimitri? Now's the chance."
