Morphing Jar Unleashed - Retrain School #1

Welcome to my brand new project that I am calling Retrain School. This is where I take older cards and give them an upgrade which is typically known as a retrain. I am using that term loosely though, and my own definition may be slightly different from yours, as some may choose to call them upgrades, evolutions or similar instead (Retrain School is catchier than Upgrade University don't you think?), so here are my rules for this project:

First, the names will always be different, these are new cards meant to co-exist with the old ones. Second, the names may be completely different or in similar vein to the original card. Third, I may change the stats of the card completely or make it another type of card completely, from monster to Spell/Trap etc. though it will always have a reasoning behind it. Fourth, I may do retrains of cards that already have retrains or exist in archetypes or series. Fifth, I may sometimes use images and sometimes not, depends on what I can find online. Sixth, I may make retrains that are on the Limited/Forbidden list, and in case I do, they are suppose to exist within the current format.

These cards will be available on Duel Portal as well, as long as they are playable there of course, and will be under the set name RESC (Retrain School).

Now for the card itself, today we have Morphing Jar, and the way I am choosing to retrain it I find personally quite interesting, this card discards and draws, similar to the original, however only one card at a time, and it will keep doing so until both players discard a monster, then the player who discarded the monster with the highest ATK takes damage equal to that ATK. Along with that, it is able to Special Summon a monster when it's destroyed by battle, which makes you want to keep discarding for until you get something good with the first effect. I choose to make it a Fiend to depict the idea of it no longer being in the jar.

Original Card:

FLIP: Both players discard their entire hands, then draw 5 cards.

New Card:

FLIP: Both players discard 1 random card from their hand (if able), then both players draw 1 card, then repeat this effect until both players discard a monster, then the player whose monster has the highest ATK takes damage equal to its ATK in the GY.
If this card is destroyed by battle by an opponent’s attacking monster and sent to the GY: You can target 1 monster in your GY, except “Morphing Jar Unleashed”; Special Summon it in face-down Defense Position.

I am very much a fan of your Retrain School idea. I personally love giving older cards a new chance in the spotlight, so this sounds like a cool project.

For Morphing Jar Unleashed, it has a cool flavor to it explaining its type change and power up. The drawing effect is probably more balanced in general, but if your up agains paleozoic and they don't have any monsters to discard, whoever had the smaller deck will deck out, which isn't great. Additionally, how does the effect work if one player discards multiple monsters before their opponent does? whose ATK would apply for the effect? I would say the one with the lowest ATK, but thats up to you. The last effect seems fine. It seems inspired by the new Crawler monsters revealed in Circuit Break, if that was what you were going for

Overall, cool concept, cool card, but could use some tweaking. Good luck with Retrain School.

Paleozoic tends to use a few monsters in their Deck, to utilize the fact that they don't need a Normal Summon, so they can make more combo plays that way, so probably not a big problem. When both players discard a monster, you check those two monsters, not any monsters before that, the others discarded before that are not relevant.

This is terribly broken. You could just run a deck of 39 Spell/Traps and 1 of this and deck your opponent out.

Foolish Burial/Fiend Griefing to mill this, then Shallow Grave or Reverse Reuse to SS it facedown. Books of Eclipse will ensure that your opponent decks out before you do.

I suppose that could be an issue, though it also sounds way to gimmicky to be a reliable as well, running only one monster and using a strategy that relies on a specific monster could easily backfire on you. I may put in a limit for around 10 cards or so.
