The word "honky"

Recommended Posts

Well I'm not going to pretend to be neutral on this matter. I am 100% white (well, probably 97% or whatever, I haven't had a DNA test, but my ancestry is pretty easy to trace and it's English, Welsh and French, back to the 1600's) and I don't find either "honky" or "cracker" offensive. If you find these words offensive or even go as far to call them the "H-word" or - ok well the C-word is either c*** or cancer - why? What about these words upsets you?

EDIT: ok Artorias, I read your status comment answer to these questions. My answer (beware it's funking graphic but you should see it):

I've already outlined why in my status, but I'll say it here too.

Like the N word, the H word was deliberately designed to defame and attack an entire race of people, both words have sordid histories.

To quote Ice Cube on White people using the N Word:

“. . . It’s not cool because when I hear my homie say it, it don’t feel like venom. When I hear a white person say it, it feel like that knife stabbing you even if they don’t mean to.”

I know a lot of White people who feel the same way on the other side of the fence in regards to the H word.

I'm going to keep my race private because it won't help the discussion in any way.

As if you're not white.

Black people have actually been persecuted for their race. To pretend that "honky" and "n****r" are symmetrical is ridiculous.

EDIT: Hey, look, even the swear filter agrees with me

Okay so, I kiiiiiiiinda wanna move this to Misc right now since it's already getting to be something of a spamhole, but I'm gonna give y'all the benefit of the doubt for now partly because I lowkey just wanna be done doing mod stuff after wrestling the PM system and handing out my first-ever warns as a mod, and go post in RP instead. If y'all can actually get some debate going on the relevance of the word "honky" as a racial slur and so on, y'all do y'all. That said, I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on this thread, and if it gets any further spammy posts, it's going to Misc.

It ain't much, but here's my two cents on the word to try and steer us back on-topic. It's the funniest-sounding racial slur I've ever heard (could they really not think of a better word?), and being approximately as white as Wonder Bread myself, I really don't feel any sort of offense in the term's presence. Racial slurs for other races tend to have a larger impact for multiple reasons as I see it. They've had prominence in history leading up to today. I've heard a handful of racial slurs in my time, but when's the last time anyone's actually heard someone say "honky"? I guess I'd call it dated, but that doesn't seem quite right. Though, it's 2017, and people will literally get offended over a Starbucks coffee cup if they can. If there's a racial slur - dated or not - that grinds their gears, I'm not gonna judge.

Okay that's all from me. As y'all were (=w=)7

The word "honky" doesn't carry with it hundreds of years of enslavement, abuse, and murder, so I'm pretty sure there's no comparison.

This thread is going nowhere fast. Why make it? If people really want to decry the "abuse" they face from being called honkies, let them start their own threads about all the ways it's affected the lives of every white person to ever live, because that's the burden of proof they face.

*deep breath*

I am never going to tell anyone what they can or cannot be offended by. It's a personal feeling. I have no issues with the word in the slightest but if someone tells me it bothers them I sure as hell am going to avoid using it around them. Because the world is hostile enough to not bother respecting someone's wishes in such an easy way. I don't mind changing my vocabulary now and then.

Not that I really ever use or actually hear the word myself.

Doesn't make you any less of a prick. Just saying. A little respect can go a long way.

Respect also entails not coming to a thread that nobody's posted in for half a week just to call somebody a prick. Just saying. Try not to do this again.

That said, as per my heads-up a few posts up, I'll be putting this in Misc now. Would've been perfectly happy to let this die in Debates, but oh well.
