What Makes a Discussion/Thread Worthwhile?

Yes this was an idea based on a post I saw. No I don't want to continue any potential argument. Discuss but discuss calmly and kindly people. I have Yui on speed dial yo.

 

Anyway the thought is. What makes something worth talking about? Is there merit to any and all topics of discussion? Why or why not? Go ahead you crazy kids and take that prompt and roll with it.

I'm of the mind that a discussion/thread being worthwhile - at least in the context of keeping General from being a spamhole like Misc - is that it's a topic people can really talk about. Not an event or worldview usually, because that's more of what Debates is for. I mean something like what hobbies you may have that don't belong in other sections. I recall Wahrheit had a thread about cooking once, because that's something he likes to do. Or a life event that everyone is gonna hit eventually, like moving. Or just general information about yourself that you can really talk to people about, like dreams or accomplishments, or even flaws. If it's an actual topic of discussion and not just one-liners being thrown around in response to OP, I'd say any topic of discussion should be worthwhile here as long as it doesn't break the rules and doesn't belong in another section instead. Make a thread about fidget spinners for all I care, long as people can actually have a discussion about it.

 

But that's just my two cents.

A thought expressed is worthwhile to at least somebody at some point. No thread or post is worthless.

The best conversations I've seen here are usually about nothing worthwhile, I think that's what makes them worth talking about.

Aside from the obvious, I feel like personal topics are worth having around despite not generating lots of discussion between members directly. Like that weakness thread I posted, it's mostly just members telling us something about themselves rather than actively talking with each other about their weaknesses. But I still think those types of topics are good to have because they help us learn more about each other, they expose us to different experiences we may not have had ourselves, and can potentially lead to story-sharing. In the bucket list thread, we ended up learning that Dae had a dating streak with magic people and that there are several aspiring authors in our midst.

At this point you should probably just make a new thread, even linking to the old one if you want. I don't really know what the guidelines for necrobumping are in this section (I'll have to make them myself if I can't find any) if we have any, but that thread's been pretty dead for a good while now.

That seems silly. It's a perfectly usable thread. It was only a page or two back.
