HuffPost gets a little racist

Recommended Posts

As someone who frequents gay dating sites I see profiles with "racial preferences" on more or less a daily basis, but it isn't something exclusive to a particular race. I'm thankful that I don't have these hang-ups, as I wouldn't have nearly as much fun if I did.

But what if Black and Asian men choose to only date other Black and Asian men? Isn’t that racist too? No... and you tried it. Look, all men are created equal but all men are not valued equally, especially in this country. Every Black and Asian man who grew up on this planet grew up surrounded by positive images of whiteness and white men. Therefore, our desire to date within our own race, when we choose to, is not rooted in any assertion made by society that we’re better than anyone else.

While societal racism truly is a particularly awful brand of racism, racism does not need to be societal to be racism. If someone belonging to a marginalized race chooses to date only within their own race, they can argue that their brand of racism is less problematic than societal racism or even that it's necessary given societal racism, but not that their outlook isn't racism. Dating exclusively within one's own race necessitates a belief that people of their own race are superior - for dating at the very least.

Well... yes! If you’re making any of your dating decisions with a person’s race in mind, that’s racist.

Q4T, and this applies to everyone.
