[MtG] [HOU] Hour of Devastation Spoilers - Week 2

Recommended Posts

Call me a domineering pain in the ass, but I'm starting this thread in advance so I can keep spoilers up to date on the first post.

With that said, anything people are looking forward to out of week 2? Any cards you expect to see print? Discuss!

The previous week's spoilers can be found here, while pre-season spoilers are here. Please keep discussion to its respective thread(s). Thanks!

A gallery of all cards can be found here:

We only have 1 mythic left to spoil so the most exciting card type is just about finished. It should be white since we don't have any white mythics, but I could see them not having one to show Bolas' influence.

Past that we have 4 legendary mono-colored creatures so we should be getting a Green one. Obviously have the last 2 "Last" cards. We also have another cycle of deserts coming. I'm half hoping it is the enemy cycle lands but with desert subtype and half hoping that isn't at all what they are since losing the basic types does hurt. Also makes for a weird cycle.

First spoiler of the week, ahoy!

Ammit Eternal 2B
Creature – Zombie Crocodile Demon {R}
Afflict 3 (Whenever this creature becomes blocked, defending player loses 3 life.)
Whenever an opponent casts a spell, put a -1/-1 counter on ~.
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to an opponent, remove all -1/-1 counters from it.
5/5

Seems pretty decent. Not sure if it's strong enough for Standard - the zombie deck right now is choked for 3-drops iirc - but Hapatra EDH decks like him.

I was really confused by this at first, before I realized it's a 5/5 for 3 mana, thus explaining the bizarre downside. But yeah, it's...solid, all things considering. Hapatra definitely likes this thing, as might Nest of Scarabs and such. But the Afflict 3 makes it a little less desirable to block, which is good, and since it loses the -1 counters when it deals damage, you pretty much have to suck it up and block the thing, or cast a lot of spells.

Zombie Crocodile Demon is neat.

especially for the creature type line.

[spoiler Spoiler]

btw, we're missing: 2 blue eternals (each bolas color has 2 so far), 2nd black eternalize, Hazoret's Last X, Khefnet's Last X, Hour of Promise, Hour of Eternity, God-Pharaoh's Gift. a Green Legend.... and the rest of the limited fodder.

Zombie Demon Croc is cool I guess. I've never been one for random beaters so this doesn't excite me, but I can see this being strong.

I wouldn't expect to the eternals to be fully color balanced. Same for the mechanics. In fact I think Mark said the Jund colors only get one eternalizer.

Correction: we have three mythics left. Two of the ones spoiled so far are outside the standard set count.

Well, it's a strictly better Parallectric Feedback, but I don't think either mode is relevant enough to see play. (Feedback is a bulk rare, after all...)

This card is certainly interesting in Nekusar. If you wheel it away, it becomes a free Fork which is great with future wheels. If it's in your hand and your opponents are low on life, you might kill someone when they try to play something big.

Mothership articles are up for the day, so here are some more previews for y'all. Speaking of white mythics...

Overwhelming Splendor seems pretty absurd for Limited. It's 8 mana: your opponent loses the game. Could also be good in some sort of Enduring Ideal build.

And Champion of Wits seems nice enough. He interacts favorably with anthem effects, which is relevant for EDH. Doubt he's playable elsewhere, though.

EDIT: And we have another WB zombie! Don't think this one's nearly as potent as Wayward Servant, though...

*reads Overwhelming Splendor* WHAT?!

Yeah, definitely a win-button in Limited. Then again, I recall during the Amonkhet prerelease that I went to, other win button cards were Sandwurm Convergence and Cruel Reality. Impractically high mana costs, but in Limited, they were devastatingly strong.

...but yes, it would look gorgeous as a foil.

Unraveling Mummy is good enough. Not as potent as Wayward, but still solid enough.

The set has 12 mythics? Small sets tend to have 10, but with them making them bigger I can see it being 12.

Anyway, thoughts on new cards.

Refuse to Cooperate seems bad. A free fork is nice and all, but the front half just does nothing.

Champion is real cool. Really awesome design. Not sure if its good enough for anything, but I like it.

I'm not into Splendor. Humility is a stupidly powerful card, but 8 mana and only affecting one player simply isn't worth it in commander imo.

More WB zombies is cool. Shame the Zombie deck is so glutted at the 3 slot.

Gift actually makes a ton of sense from a mechanic view. Might put it into Sedris since it doubles as another version of him more or less.

Since Kaladesh with the intro of the planeswalker decks, we've had two more mythics than usual in each set, which are their respective planeswalkers. Again, they stand "outside" of the set: Nissa, Genesis Mage is 200/199 and Nicol Bolas the Deceiver is 204/199. I assume Rivals of Ixalan will be the same.

I wasn't counting the planeswalker decks as part of the 10 count. ATM we have the 5 gold mythics and 5 mono-colored ones in the main set. However I did check Aether Revolts mythic count and it did have 12 in the main set so we are likely to see 2 more.

Fair enough. o7

Here's something to make it up to you. Seems like a Limited blowout... a mini-Overrun. Maybe even help push Abzan Tokens over the top?
