Shining Protector of Blue Skies

Not that Blue-Eyes needs the support considering they won world championships, but I wanted to make an Xyz monster for them, and also make it feasible for Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon to be summoned for once.

Rank 8 ~ LIGHT ~ Dragon/Xyz/Effect

2 Level 8 monsters

3000/2500

The name of this face-up card on the field or in the GY becomes "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon". Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 Xyz Material and Target 1 LIGHT monster you control; it cannot be destroyed by battle or card effect this turn. This card can be treated as 2 Tributes for a LIGHT monster's Tribute Summon. If Tributed for the Tribute or Special Summon of a monster, that monster gains the following effect.

• Cannot be destroyed by battle or card effect, once per turn.

Rank 8 ~ LIGHT ~ Dragon/Xyz/Effect

3000/3000

3 Level 8 LIGHT Dragon monsters

The name of this face-up card on the field becomes "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon". If this card is Special Summoned: LIGHT Tuner monsters in your possession are unaffected by your opponent's card effects until the end of your next turn. If Tributed for a Tribute or Special Summon, the summoned monster cannot be destroyed by card effects that do not Target it. Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can detach up to 3 Xyz Materials and Target that many LIGHT monsters you control; they cannot be destroyed by battle this turn.

As always, comments, suggestions and fixes would be greatly appreciated. ^.^

Yeah, Shining Dragon probably found a home in actual Blue-Eyes (assuming they're ready to accept it).

But yeah, outside Hieratics using Astral Force / Sun Dragon Overlord; Blue-Eyes are the only ones who're using this and not sure how much they'll want to make this over Number 38 / Felgrand / Cipher Dragon, etc (whatever R8 techs they have access to). Protection effect is fine though, since yeah, Blue-Eyes don't have inherent protection (well, after Azure-Eyes expires or if you use Spirit Dragon to float into Stardust Spark and use that up.) Then again, the Tributing protection is probably to make Shining nearly invincible, which should serve enough to offset the need to get it out in the first place (you still need to worry about Quaking and other sweep cards that bounce stuff though).

Flavor-wise, they're Synchro based so adding an Xyz sort of breaks that, but I'll ignore the flavor stuff because they technically do Xyz as much as they make Azure/Spirit and wouldn't seem out of place.

As a whole, card is fine.

Thanks for the review!

Yeah, after comparing this card to the other rank 8’s Blue-Eyes runs, it does seem overshadowed compared to them. Shining Protector needs 3 specific materials instead of 2 and doesn’t really protect your main Blue-Eyes monsters from card effects, only battle. Also, Blue-Eyes Shining is a dead draw if you can’t make this.

I’m planning on changing the card a bit. I have 2 ideas but I can’t really decide which route to take with it.

I could make it require only 2 materials to summon. For Blue-Eyes, that makes it just as easy to Summon as the other rank 8’s. The thing that worries me is it might make summoning a virtually indestructible Blue-Eyes Shining too easy. I’m not sure I want to play against 1st turn Blue-Eyes Indestructible Shining Dragon. I could nerf the tribute protection a little to something like “Twice per turn: the summoned monster cannot be destroyed by…”

I could instead buff the effects so that the 3 materials are actually worth it, maybe by extending the effect protection for tuners to maybe all LIGHT monsters? If I do that it’d probably only last for 1 turn, not 3 like it is now. That also seems a bit overpowered though, since “unaffected by” is really strong and can set up an OTK. Alternatively, I could change the battle protection into “can’t be destroyed by battle or card effect” protection.

What do you think? Or should I just leave it as it is?

Edit: Decided to do a little bit of both making it easier to summon, and buffing effects.
