[CIBR] SPYRAL & Subterror Links

Recommended Posts

[spoiler= According to a recent product page on the official site….]

Both SPYRAL and Subterror will be receiving new support in Circuit Break! Straight from the product page of CIBR:

Seems like both themes might be getting a bit more search power with these new Link monsters.

They went into hiding after Maximum Crisis, but now SPYRAL and the Subterrors have returned with Link Monsters to update their strategies for a new era of Dueling! Summon a “Subterror” Link Monster that can hit the field with up to 4400 ATK, gets your best Flip monsters out of your Deck, and then Summons them!  Guess what kind of card is on top of your opponent’s Deck (make sure to peek first with SPYRAL GEAR – Drone) and the new “SPYRAL” Link Monster can Summon any “SPYRAL” monster from your Deck. Of course, it also counts as SPYRAL Super Agent on the field and in the Graveyard, so you can use all your “SPYRAL GEAR” cards with it!

Why would you want a Subterror Link Monster? The behemoths reward you for having no face-up monsters. I get that it'll sorta subvert that by summoning from the deck, but still. Seems like a bad idea.

Well it also says it can summon them from deck, so maybe that effect is compensation for that.

So they ve decided to give the decks that dont need the extra deck link monsters. They coulld ve done that with BA, they really need one

inb4 they make a Link 2 requiring 2 "Kaiju" monsters lol

OT: SYPRAL can actually spam quite a bit, what with Big Red and Quik Fix. I hope that they can make good use of their link plaiz

By the way, something I noted when I first saw the reveal blurb is that the blurb never actually said the Subterror Link would summon them from the Deck. It says "gets your best FLIP monsters out of your deck AND THEN summons them"

This is notable because the text has been revealed

My impressions, as posted on Discord

You may notice, as everyone else already has, that the Subterror link is actually horrible in Subterrors

It's otherwise a pretty good card, though.
You may also notice that Double Helix implies some pretty funking insane ++++ games

Subterror Link top-notch support for the only FLIP archetypes worth noting at the moment. As in, Dolls and Crawlers.

Yeah, Apparition looks really good for Shaddolls, which also get to flip monsters during the opponent's turn through Sinister Shadow Games. Also, it's EARTH for my lady and savior Shekhinaga. Note that it can Summon any monster from hand in face-down Position, not just Flips as I would have thought, so it can be used to Set high-Level monsters without Tributing, too. Teching a couple of Subterrors and Raideens (Instant Fusion) in Shaddolls may not be that bad of an idea xD

As for Double Helix, that Metaverse-ish effect is nasty, and I guess it can Summoned with Quik Fixes and maybe Drones that otherwise would be used for a Rank1. Also enabling Links in both the EM and MM Zones is a perk that I appreciate.

I knew Konami would funk up the Subterror link monster. It needed a way to banish itself for a turn or to be treated as a face-down defense position Monster during your turn or something. It does nothing to help the deck get going but at least it helps stabilize most plays and is pretty decent as a combo ender. Actually if it had one of the aforementioned ways of getting itself of the field for a sec then it would have been amazing support.

It is a towers out for subterrors, can make up for not having set monsters only (and most importantly is a forth solid 2-mat link for crawlers). Both being solid 2-materials (with the subterror being very interesting generic support) kind of comes as a surprise to me, I expected them to completely ... (remembers these are comparable to beatrice) ... forget what I was about to ... (remembers weathery) ... yea, they did not completely screw up.

Apparition is now unofficially the Shaddoll Link Monster. Solid stats for a Link 2, and that second effect is GODLY in that Deck. It is also a really solid option for Crawlers, who can also benefit from both of its non-Subterror effects. Shame that it has no way of working with the archetype unless Subterrors get errata'd in the OCG to only need a lack of face-up monsters in the Main Monster Zone, at which point it would be an amazing card.

Double Helix, on the other hand, is kind of crap. It's an alternative to getting out a Rank 1, but I don't see that effect being pulled off very often. Then again, I'm not very familiar with what SPYRALs even do in terms of their play style, since they kind of seem to be all over the place.

Spyrals love it, considering it can ensure the success with drone and get out master plan to get an immediate additional +1, afterwards master plan + a second copy of this triggers its second floating effect.

Not to mention that since its treated as super agent, quick fix can bring itself back, which leads to more searches and more link ladder. If you can get 1 out, you could very easily get 2 or maybe 3 out.

Again, I'm not very familiar with SPYRALs, so I wasn't sure on my judgment call.

I'm sticking to my guns on that ferocious dragon lady, though.

Yeah. Apparition is a girl. Specifically, Fiendess.

Woot, a Wyrm Link monster! Too bad it can only be used in Flip Decks. Though that being said, it's a pretty good card for Flip Decks, Crawlers will like this a lot too. I understand that people dislike the fact that you can't use Subterror as effectively with it, but I feel like giving that up for a monster which can easily get over 3000 ATK and has the ability to search and get any monster on the board can also be another option for a while if you don't have the right cards ready.

The SPYRAL is not bad either, being able to use it with other Links as well could be interesting, gives more of a reason to have an Extra Deck in SPYRAL for sure.

the subterror monster is just shaddoll support using the subterror name don't think this counts as an apology for banning construct konami!. subterrors can't use this half as well as shaddolls can, and it's funny that this monster has such good link markers, when subterrors don't really need their ED.

The subterror I assume is supposed to be used mid game because you can't summon ST from your hand with it on board.

Though, outside of those in other flip decks it's pretty godly.

The Subterror is not meant to be used in Subterrors. It's really just that simple. It's like DT1 with the Ice Barrier Dragons and Naturia Guardians.

Double Helix, on the other hand, is kind of crap. It's an alternative to getting out a Rank 1, but I don't see that effect being pulled off very often. Then again, I'm not very familiar with what SPYRALs even do in terms of their play style, since they kind of seem to be all over the place.

Double Helix is amazing

It's literally just free ++++ for days

That's more/less Spyral playstyle

The issue isn't that Subterrors don't want to use it, although granted being unable to Set itself kinda does also mean this

The issue is that Subterrors are barely able to summon it since their entire problem in the first place is that they don't have an effective means to put their FLIP monsters on the field

Like having these plays "as an option" is nice, but realistically they're never actually an option

[...] The issue is that Subterrors are barely able to summon it [...]

Hardly true, it is a boss killer (if used by them) and can help setup/regenerate a bit.

The problem is they do not need it to control the field (level 12 + final battle for an eclipse etc.) and it does not really advance them in any real way, at least not as much as you lose to play him.

i don't think that's what he means.

just because a deck can summon something, doesn't mean it can afford to do so. yes, the new link is a potential boss killer, and for that reason, deserves to keep a spot in the ED, but it costs you two of your biggest monsters, who are already enough of a hassle to summon and maintain on the field. in this case, you'd be giving up 2 of them, for a monster that does help the archetype a bit, but doesn't add anything significantly notable to the deck as a whole. a monster who's cost for summon, and very typing (as a link monster), make it counter intuitive to the entirety of the subterror playstyle. yeah, you can do fancy things with it, but it's simply not needed in the deck, or i should say, it's not what the deck needed but my shaddolls thank them for it anyways

The thing is that it's not like Subterrors even need a boss killer. Final Battle easily boosts most behemoths to at least 3500. As for the other effects, you dump a flip mlnster, which Subs don't want to do, to Special Summon a flip from hand, which could have already been done if you had not summoned the thing, and then recovers or searches flips is a somewhat conditionally manner, which is something they actually needed.

However, the search is needed most on turn 1, and having flips is absolutely vital to summoning this thing. You would have to open with at least 3 behemoths and/or 2 and Fiendess + Warrior to get any sort of value from it, and at that point you're better off just setting the damn things and ignoring the Link. After turn 1, it doesn't matter as much since with a proper opening you can control the field pretty hard.

As far as recovery goes, it's almost never needed. It has a place exclusively when things devolve into a war of attrition, but in that case more often than not Cave Clash does the same thing but is applicable in far more situations.

The main things Subterrors need is a consistent second monster searcher, even if it's exclusively for Flips, and a S/T searcher so that opening with Final Battle is almost always going to happen if you didn't brick. Apparition's flip search is usually too slow to be relevant, and lacks the S/T search it needed.

When you consider all of that, as well as the fact that it's sheer existence on the field completely cripples your own deck mechanic, you'll find it's less than welcome in its own archetype. It has exactly two uses: emergency boss killing if you don't have Final Battle at the ready, and OTK potential by being a beefy beater used in conjunction with Final Battle turning another Subterror into an even beefier beater.

If they had at least given it an Omega effect that could search Subterror S/T it would have been a little clunky but definitely welcome and playable, since it would give a goal for a very solid turn 1. As it sits, it is just barely not a waste of space in the extra deck, and that's mostly because Subterrors rarely have extra deck options.

Good God, can you stop crying about the omega search effect

"If they had just given good X effect!!"

You can say that about any card. Of course it would be better for subterror if it could forcibly clear itself from the board.

But asking for it to be a search effect attached to a self-banish like that is just being greedy. It's asking it to be all wrapped up in one nice little bundle.

You can be salty but use some common sense.

So, I took a closer look at the art of Double Helix and... is it just me, or it implies something sinister? I would think Super Agent was pals with Sleeper all along and his expression makes me think  he is one of the bad guys, if not the real bad guy all along, scheming with his partner to get on his hands the Last Resort and Fully Armed gears; Its name "Double Helix" further strengthens this vibe I get from the card.

That... or it simply depicts an scene of their good times before Sleeper went rogue and turned evil.
